The Oscars: Class Warfare Wins Best Liberal Issue

By Matthew Philbin | February 28, 2011 | 11:25

A  A

You just knew Hollywood couldn't get through an Oscars broadcast without subjecting viewers to self-important statements of left-wing politics. War, AIDS, gay marriage, global warming - pick a liberal hobby horse and chances are an entertainer used the Academy Awards to give America his or her opinion on it.

This year, the cause du jour was class warfare, as reflected in shills for organized labor and a jab at bankers. With public sector unions protesting in Wisconsin and other states where governors are trying to address huge budget shortfalls, a couple of recipients couldn't resist adding their two cents.

Video below the fold.

Wally Phister, accepting the award for best cinematography for the movie 'Inception,' thanked his crew and made sure to mention that they were union members.

Speaking to the press backstage, Phister called the Wisconsin situation 'madness' and noted his own union membership. To him, 'unions are a very important part of the middle class in America all we are trying to do is get a decent wage and have medical care.' It should be noted that neither union wages nor medical benefits are at issue in Wisconsin.

Another 'Inception' winner, Gary Rizzo (Best Sound) was grateful to 'all the hard working boom operators and utility sound people that worked on the production crew. Union, of course.' Of course.

No Hollywood plot would be complete without a stock villain, and this year, business executives fit the role. Charles Ferguson took 'Best Documentary' for 'Inside Job,' a left-wing attack on the Wall Street bankers involved in the 2008 financial crisis. Not content to let the film speak for itself, Ferguson opined, 'Not a single financial executive has gone to jail, and that's wrong.'

Would we expect anything less from Bollywood !!!! Nothing about Haiti either, all that Money pissed away and where did it go.... O'reilly was suppose to do a special report and has also invited all those Big Shot Actors who rally the Troops to give 100's of Millions to help those in Haiti but only a fraction of those 100's of Millions' have been dispersed.... Clearly someone needs to be held accountable !!!

Well, Charles, it seems that most of them hold down positions in the Obama administration or some other closely associated organization. Now, care to correct your statement? Yep. Didn't think so...

And, it's likely --- if you check --- that many of those people provided the funding for your stupid movie.

And what Ferguson doesn't realize is that those Wall Street bankers that he attacks are heavily invested in the movie industry.  Who does he think puts up the money for these movies, grandmothers on Social Security?

Maybe the Democrats should have done something

Democrats had control of Congress for 4 years. Maybe they should have done some of these things . . . oh, that's right, they're just actors too.

".....Ferguson opined, 'Not a single financial executive has gone to jail, and that's wrong.' "   Ferguson, they have to guilty of something to go to jail. Find a jail worthy offence and now you can put them in jail. Not liking a free market capitalist is not a jail worthy offence. You can't just put someone in jail, just because you think someone should go to jail.

Right as allways, never left.

They are guilty of being financial executives and that's good enough for Ferguson.

How dare they thank the 'all the hard working boom operators and utility sound people that worked on the production crew. Union, of course.'  That is over the line. And then he had the nerve to answer a question about Wisconsin at the backstage presser. (Sarcasm off.)

This is a weak example of "hollywood...subjecting viewers to self-important statements of left-wing politics." And I didn't know the right wing was opposed to AIDS awareness.

The oscars were boring, Ricky Gervais was a much more entertaining host than Franco and Hathaway, there were no surprises, the best part of the night was Kirk Douglas.

Hey Hollywood

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 1:23pm.

Why don't all of you incredibly well paid stars demand that instead of you personally being paid millions of dollars per film, those millions are spread equally to every single person working on the movie.  Including make up artisits, sound editors, janitors, and accountants.  Yes, your money will be divided equally among every individual associated with the movie.

What, you don't want to do that?  Because you and not those other people are what generates the money?  Welcome to the real world.

The Oscars have gone European on us!

Submitted by Mary Louise Turner on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 11:08pm.

Once upon a time, the Oscars rewarded films that were not only well-made, but were very popular with audiences too (see "The Sound of Music", "Titanic" and "The Godfather").  However, in recent years, these awards have not only taken a hard turn to the left (especially with the documentary category), but have gone art-house to boot.  In other words, the Oscars are going European on us!

None of the Best Picture winners since 2003 ("The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King") have been box-office smashes; some, in fact, have flat out bombed!  No wonder the ratings have been sinking (although crummy hosts and l-o-n-g telecasts due to liberal garbage haven't helped.)  Nobody wants to see well-crafted yet virtually unknown films take awards.
