ABC Turns to Doomsday Propaganda to Push Global Warming Solutions

As Newsbusters has been covering for nearly a year, ABC developed and heavily promoted a nightmare "documentary" of our future (unless we listen to the einironmentalists). The Business & Media Institute's Dan Gainor watched "Earth 2100" when it aired last night:

ABC’s “Earth 2100” tried to tell the story of the future but ended up a documentary about the present. The global warming Armageddon-fest tried to scold and scare Americans into changing habits to prevent the deadly end. Instead, it told a tale of just how far journalism has descended from neutrality to bias to outright propaganda. That’s what host Bob Woodruff called “a different kind of journalism.”

The program focused most on the fictional character “Lucy” who he used to tell his equally fictional tale of the future. Immediately after viewers met Lucy, the first real human they saw other than Woodruff was John Podesta, president and CEO of the lefty-wing think tank Center for American Progress. Podesta also headed up the Obama transition team.

Since Earth 2100 was a two-hour, left-wing, Obama commercial complete with an early talking head appearance by the president, Podesta was an appropriate choice. But not so appropriate that he actually appeared in that part of the transcript, which ABC posted to go with its massive Web effort for the show. ABC had to add him in after the transcripts were completed. Apparently, the Obama connection wasn’t clear enough before that.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Podesta was far from alone. The parade of lefties, eco-scarers and Obama supporters was long indeed – climatologist Heidi Cullen, formerly of the Weather Channel; Thomas Friedman, New York Times columnist; Peter Gleick, president of the Pacific Institute; Van Jones, Green Jobs adviser to Obama; E.O. Wilson, a biologist & entomologist at Harvard University; Tom Daschle , former Democratic Senate majority leader and Eileen Claussen, president of the liberal Pew Center on Global Climate Change to name just a few of roughly 50 ABC claimed to interview.

There was no opposition. The show pretended to be fact but only presented two points of view – the world will end and mankind will return to “dark ages” after billions die. Or mankind will wise up, embrace all sorts of left-wing eco-solutions, abandon suburbs, live sustainably, pay much higher taxes and magically flourish.

The timing of the program was obvious and tied to at least one event even Woodruff admitted at the very end of the special – a looming climate conference in Copenhagen this December where America will be bullied to accept major climate regulations. Of course, Democrats have also just proposed a multi-trillion-dollar climate tax to save Americans from themselves.

To convince Americans of the need for those solutions, Woodruff painted a horrific picture. Lucy told the viewers that: “My story is everyone's story, the story of the last century.” But it wasn’t just a cartoon pushing that sentiment. It was the journalists. Woodruff explained early on in the program, “As the American life becomes increasingly unsustainable … the rest of the world will be trying to catch up.”

Times columnist Friedman argued for Big Government solutions to climate change with a mix of faux patriotism. “But the thing I would compare it to is World War II. After Pearl Harbor, FDR turned to Detroit, the automakers, and said you will now make tanks. You will now make Jeeps. Just like that, that was like overnight almost. And they did it.”

The progam followed Lucy’s Methuselah-like life from here birth June 2, 2009 to her 91st birthday as the world’s oldest woman. Most of the program went from downbeat to devastating, with only a few highlights in between. By 2015, her Miami summer was “on track to become one of the hottest in history.”

It got worse from there. Epic storms, disease, wars and more – a secular trek through the worst parts of Revelations. The “storm of the century” wiped out Miami and sent our heroine to San Diego for a new life. By 2030, “the new normal,” included the reality that “shortages and higher prices were just a fact of everyday life.”

With each decade, the problems loomed worse – massive population displacement, hordes of illegal immigrants invading the United States only to be shot at the border. After her parents died in a flu during 2050, Lucy and her family trekked across America’s new bad lands in an armed caravan to find a new life in the green capital of the world – New York. They drove terrified through an abandoned Las Vegas and a Southwest overcome by drought.

New York first brings promise and then ruin as mankind succumbs to a rapid global warming setting in motion the end of civilization. By 2084, disease and collapse have plunged the globe into disaster with just 2.7 billion alive and dropping. Naturally, ABC turned to Obama supporter Podesta for his take on this eventuality. “If the world breaks down, if globalization breaks down, then even the capacity of the United State to manage a degraded global environment, I think, will come into question,” he said.

The ultimate in liberal disaster fantasies – even government can’t handle it. By 2100, Lucy lives on a small farm in a newly medieval world. “It is a hard life. The United States has fragmented into a million shards,” Lucy explained. E.O. Wilson summed it up: “Humanity could very well be in hell, where hell is defined as truth realized too late.”

But wait. With enough tax dollars and Big Government solutions, “paradise” can still be ours.

Woodruff introduced the alternate ending with typical lack of subtlety. “The future is not yet written. The ending to our story can still be changed.” That was followed by one final segment devoted to the leftie alternatives – “a wake-up call, a challenge for us to plan a different course,” he said.

Those alternatives included the typical journalistic list of touchy-feely solutions: compact fluorescent bulbs, planting a garden, more mass transit and one item designed just for newly owned General Motors – smaller cars.

But Woodruff and his “experts” weren’t finished. “Governments and industries are going to have to change on a massive scale,” he argued. Van Jones made the pitch for more taxes, which he hid by calling it by another name. “We can't drill and burn our way out of our problems. But we can invent and invest our way out.” Investment, that’s not a tax, after all…

Of course, that all has to be mandated to save ignorant citizens from their own base desires. “It would mean both sacrifice and hard work for the whole country,” Woodruff explained, echoing the left-wing claim that fighting global warming is like fighting World War II.

That huge United States commitment somehow convinces China and India to agree to carbon reductions in a 2015 conference and the world is on a new path. “By 2100, our world could be transformed,” concluded Woodruff.

If only some liberal president, who controlled both houses of Congress and had a devoted, compliant media could make that happen. So much for science fiction.

Editor’s Note: ABC’s report included clips from a few Web submissions of what the future might be like. The network encouraged first-person Web videos. The Business & Media Institute submitted one such video which painted a dark picture of an enviro-police state. Somehow that didn’t fit ABC’s plan for the future and it was not included. Special thanks to Media Research Center staffers Scott Whitlock, Lyndsi Thomas and Nathan Burchfiel for the BMI video included above.

Notice the sudden sea level rise in New York

Notice the sudden sea level rise in New York. Quick! Run for higher gound. OK, you can crawl. At this rate - you've got a lot of time on your hands.

Mean Sea Level Trend -The Battery, New York

150 years of records from NOAA. A straight-line trend. The sea is rising (no adjustment for land elevevation change is made - as in is the land subsiding?) at a rate of  10.9 inches per 100 years.

With all of this sudden "man-made" global warming for decades now and with all of the melting ice caps and glaciers; just why has the rate of increase not increased at some point in the last 50 years?

Interesting to look at the past 10-15 years on chart!

Gary,

Isn't the true record of actual observations amazing. It doesn't come close to matching the computer projections that are used in propaganda like the International Climate Panel report or by what passes for Science or Journalism today. Reality bites because it is too tame.

You're right, of course.

Computer projections are based on what you feed into the program: If A is increased by X amount over a period of Y, then A will look like this______ .

Of course, if A is decreased by X amount over a period of Y, then A will look like this______.

Mere equations, simple ones at that, none of which account for additional scenarios. For example, if A is increased by X amount over a period of Y, and accounting for B, C, D, E, and F +/-, then...who knows what kind of shenanigans we'll have gotten ourselves into.

NorthCoaster...

From the link I provided, one can click on measurement stations all around the US coast line.  It's rather interesting. When you look at one near the New Orleans area, the sea level trend (still a straight line) is much steeper than in the NY one I used; however, most of the rise shown in sea level there is actually because the land is settling (sinking).

In Los Angeles, the trend is only 3 1/4 inches per 100 years - yet the State of CA is spending $millions of dollars studying the need to spend $tens of billions of dollars to mitigate the effects of the rising seas. They are hyping up the view that the sea level in Los Angeles will rise by 55 inches by the end of the century (91 years away). Looks like I'll inherit beach property, if I hang around long enough.

Last week I picked up the phone and called NOAA - guess I got lucky - the gentleman that picked up the phone quickly informed me that he was the guy to talk to on the issue. While it did sound that he was was a bit concerned that there is future risk, I asked him a very direct question, "in studying the overall record in your data from the all the records along the US coastline, is there any evidence that during the past 100 years or so - or in recent decades - that you can see any indication that sea levels have begun to rise above the trend lines." His answer was a solid, "none, whatsoever." I think he added, "yet."

Nothing but a theory, folks.

What the heck Gary

however, most of the rise shown in sea level there is actually because the land is settling (sinking).

Are you trying to start another crisis? : ]

Boy, now I am worried!

gc.. funny indeed

Actually, as far as NOLA goes, there is a lot of truth there. Once the Mississippi River was all levied up - protecting the low lying coastal plain - New Orleans itself - from the seasonal flooding, NOLA was doomed. Historically, when the Mississippi flooded, it left behind deep deposits of silt on the land. Once it was all protected from flooding the continual process of settling and then re-building up was toast. Oh, and the process of pumping the water out of what was wetlands, adds to the shinkage factor. Actually there is more involved - here is a good read: http://www.helium.com/items/1241691-why-is-new-orleans-sinking

It can only continue to sink - all because of man. Man made global sinking. Man, I'm getting a sinking feeling. (;~>

Get your feet wet

Hasn't Al Gore been saying since 1988 that the oceans will rise 100 feet by the year 2100? 21 years later they should be up by about 6 to 8 feet. Hasn't happened so I guess the explaination is that between 23:59:59 December 31 2099 and 00:00:01 January 1 2100 the sea will suddenly rise 100 feet.

P.S. Get an old atlas (I have one from 1963) and a current one and compare the height of the highest points on some of the (very) small islands around the world. Notice they are the same.

Keep the ILLEGALS out, join NumbersUSA to send free faxes to your reps.

Don'tFeed....

The old records of sea level measurements are the most damning for Al Gore's argument. The unfortunate aspect of this whole propaganda mess is that the proponents of AGW take cyclic functions and present them as linear. Using this sort of flawed logic, no one should have lost any money in the stock market during the last 24 months.

P. S. I would love to be alive to see your projected Tsunami

Don't confuse the Eco-fascists with the facts

Don't confuse the Global Warming Eco-fascists with the facts by informing them: that mean global temperatures have decreased over the past few years, or that its been hotter in human history, or that warmer Earth = richer people, or that climate changes are all caused by the Sun and Geology over which people have no control.  But then, realizing the facts would dash their Eco-fascistic dreams on the hard rocks of reality and would prevent them from pursuing their course aimed at controlling every aspect of our lives.

BTW, I saw the title 'ABC News Special' and was surprised to see 100% pure, ridiculous propaganda when I was expecting mere ridiculous Liberal Bias.  Everytime we think they've attained a new low, they muster their energy and reach lower.

As an aside, if they're really interested in preventing human-caused catastrophies, they might focus on North Korean nukes and missles, the civil war in Pakistan, Iranian nukes, Mexico's descent into anarchy/civil war, and Islamic terrorism and genocides (seen across the world since 700AD, now raging in Africa, coming to a theater near you).

The Dark Ages

Keep it up Lefties and you'll lead us into the New Dark Ages. Next thing you know we'll all be serfs living off the land and paying the first fruits to the government for the priviledge of having a place to live and work.

I only watched parts of the

I only watched parts of the show between commercials for another show.  Earth 2100 was so depressing to watch, but I can sum it up in a nutshell:  'Don't even bother with environmentally-friendly technologies and behavior, it is probably too late to avert the floods, plagues, mass migrations, the drying up of wells, etc.'  I was also disturbed by the amazing lack of evidence presented in the parts that I watched.  They had 'experts' who behaved as if they had traveled to the future and come back to warn us (e.g. 'The flooding of New York City will take place quickly.') that if we don't take action now, our future could become another 'Dark Ages.' (several 'experts' literally used that term).  At the same time, the narration with Lucy, with a combination of animation of real footage (some staged, others from past news events) seemed to show that doing anything was useless anyways (e.g. By 2015, the Vatican is 'green' and cleaner cars are driving on US roads, but the world still goes to hell.).

Watching the show stirred up a combination of two emotions.  A little fear because I'm young and don't have kids yet, but would like to have some.  If I were to believe this show, having kids now would probably be a selfish and reckless thing to do (Do you want to put your kids through riots, war, famine, disease?).  I also felt a lot of anger.  The show was fiction, there is no doubt about it.  None of the 'experts' brought evidence for their accounts of the future and it was a scare-tactic, plain and simple.  I am now thinking of starting some sort of petition to send to ABC to protest the most blatant abuse of journalism I have seen in a while.

Camel, it seems all

Camel, it seems all throughout teh ages there have been doomsayers and people afraid to have kids and raise them.  I remember growing up through the 60's and the same sentiments you raise were raised then.  Only then is was total global nuclear exchange and nuke winter.  And the scare was more real and present.

Just go about your life as many millionsbefore us have and we will deal with hardships as they appear.  It seems to me the only real hardship we have to face is a fascist government taking over our lives.

Camel

I spoke on the phone today with an aquaintance who asked me if I remembered what climate catastrophy he was learning at school in the late 70s. We got a great chuckle remembering the "Next great Ice Age" that the alarmists were promoting then.

So if we do not repent of

So if we do not repent of our sins against nature we are all going to hell?

TWO Obama Commercials at the SAME TIME!

Not only was this propaganda piece playing, for the first hour, NBC was playing the Inside the White House with Obama piece at the same time.

I flipped back and forth for a little while, I now feel dumber after watching such garbage.

Prop'OGanda

This was propaganda to such an extreme that even Joseph Goebbles would have had to step back from it.Several points I found wonderful. The world is ending doom and gloom followed by commercials for Olive Garden,Best Buy,cars and travel websites. The world will end but the sponsors must be honered. They really liked technology but paid no mind to the lead, mercury and plastics and other pollutants produced by such things. The two worse things to happen were, the internet quits working after most people are dead and horror of horrors, people quit believing in government.Al gore must have had a waking wet dream.

brian Williams bows to Obama !!

Take a look at Drudge..a bit of a video clip which shows ol 'crooked head" the brainless NBC spokeman for the Bamster's regime, the right dishonorable Brian Williams bowing before the 'O' Man himself !!!

The Olive garden is running

The Olive garden is running some great specials right now.Considering there will be no food in the future you should eat now. Also go buy a computer at Best Buy.This will let you twitter when all the world has gone to hell and man is feeding on man. Also did you know that dirty, grimy, polluted NYC has always been the hope of the world?Biggest joke I have ever seen.Hard to believe that these people consider them selves journalists.

I couldn't agree more. If

I couldn't agree more. If AlGore didn't scare you enough ABC will! Am I the only one who noticed that they showed everybody driving electric cars, using windmills, solar power, etc and the worst case scenario still happened? Also, at the beginning I seem to notice that the sun looked a lot closer. Maybe THAT was why everything was getting a bit warmer. Perhaps they should have moved the earth farther away. In fact what I saw was that no matter what anyone did, it all was for naught in the end.

I noticed a couple of thoughts about Greenland. I'm going to assume everyone knows who named Greenland "Greenland". If not, it was named that be the Vikings who settled there. They left when it became cold. That's right, Greenland wasn't always covered in ice! The truth is, all of this is a bunch of nonsense, the planet goes through cycles of heating and cooling which is determined a lot by sunspot activity. Which is why we are going through a cooling period now. Sunspot activity is at an all time low.

The other thing I noticed is that the parents of the little girl were driving an SUV to go from the west coast to the east! Not only that but they seemed to have no problem getting gasoline. The other thing is that all seemed to be wonderful in New York. I guess all the outrageous taxes finally paid off. In fact it "Green" heaven! And they still got waxed in the end.

I didn't watch the program. I recorded it so i could skip through the commercials and other stupid stuff.

I also noticed that not one scientist said this was going to happen but that this is what they THINK will happen. It would have been nice to have heard from some other scientists who haven't drunk the kool-aide.

One final thought and this is because I believe in God. I believe God created the earth and did so with us in mind. That means He had to know we would discover oil, coal, gas and other forms of producing 'evil' carbon. It also means He knew we would make use of the natural resources and make things. So, He must have taken all that into account when He created the earth and everything in it. Because He cares for us, I don't believe He will allow us to destroy ourselves and we certainly can't destroy the planet.

Here's a question: Why is it 135º in Iraq and only 89º in Texas? or 92º???

Why is it that environmentalists oppose solar power generators, windmills, or nuclear power plants??? Because they are more interested in preserving some rat than they are in preserving humans. In short they are stupid. The rats survived by themselves and don't need our help. The same can be said about birds. The problem with windmills is that they are said to be a danger to birds. How many birds become roadkill and there are still plenty of birds. A few losses from a windmill do not indicate extinction is near. Besides, if a bird is stupid enough to fly into one, we will have helped natural selection.

In short, assuming there is in fact a problem, we might actually be able to do something if the stupid environmentalists would stop getting in the way of every solution...

Otherwise it had the makings of a really scary sci-fi series...

Eco-Facism

Doomsday predictions about the end of mankind and how we must "do something immedietely", or we face imminent disaster, have been with us before.  I remember the Starvation Scares from 40 or so years ago.  The balooning population and the static supply of food was going to result in starvation and wars.  It never happened because man was free to inovate and change the way that food was produced, and now the world can support a population more then twice the size that the doomsday crowd had us believe would spell disaster.

The difference now, is that the U.S. Government and the Democrats are officially getting behind this new and improved version of the latest doomsday scenario.  Are they trying to save the planet?  Of course not.  It's all about money and power.  Money + Power + Governement Propaganada + State Run Business and Controlled Profits = Facism.  This time around it's Eco-Facism, but no different from the past in it's attempts to control the populace.

Heidi "Yesterday's

Heidi "Yesterday's Propaganda" Cullen?  Thomas "Ludicrous Moral Equivalencies" Friedman?  Tom "Tax Cheat" Douchele? Gee, they're really slumming it these days.  What's the matter, could they not pull James Hansen and Al Gore out of cold storage for this sad morality play?  In its increasing desperation to remain relevant, the eco-Marxist propaganda movement has descended from parody into farce.

Let's not forget Michael Mann creator of the "Hockey Stick" graph that has become the visual icon of Global Warming.

Side Note - Cheaply Done Show with Contradictions

For the vast majority of those that didn't see this show, (I watched the last hour.  I can't really explain why I did except to draw the parallel to the "Loathsome Brute" painting of Cramer on the old Seinfeld show):

The show was put together on the cheap.  It was not an "animated" cartoon per se, just a bunch of hazy watercolor drawings patched together with cheesy, holier then though dialouge spoken in some 1960's Beatnick Coffee House chic.

Even though everyone on the show was a far left eco crazy, they often contradicted themselves.  One segment ended with someone commenting how New York City, once deserted because of flood and water damage, would quickly submit to the forces of nature and return to a jungle-like state.  The next segment led off with a different "eco-expert" explaining how mankind has so ruined the earth, that it will take 100,000 years for the earth to repair all the damage.

Slopily edited, but I guess the producers felt there really is no need for consistency in message as long as the "Crisis" continues unabated.

Times are changing

It used to be they would just be selective in choosing what to say on the news.  Now they've stooped to completely making it up.  All the more reason to ignore the major networks.

The barack goebbles news

The barack goebbles news network. The most laughable piece of tripe I have ever seen

I have about 3 or 4

I have about 3 or 4 tree-hugging colleagues who were excitedly discussing this program in the break room this morning.  I came in for my morning cup of coffee and got the standard "You should have watched it, you would have gotten your eyes opened/learned the truth/gotten an education" line of BS.  I looked at them and asked this simple question provided to me by a friend:

PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THE VIKINGS WERE ABLE TO GROW VINEYARDS AND ORCHARDS WHEN THEY OCCUPIED GREENLAND IN THE 11TH, 12TH AND 13TH CENTURIES GIVEN GREENLAND'S CURRENT CLIMATE.

Dead silence.  I think I'm going to start using that more often.

Power is the peoples' to give, but it is also theirs to exercise.

The Vikings

The Viking explorations and settling of the Northern Atlantic was what got me looking at the this climate issue in the first place! I've used the same points of fact with family and friends who believe the hype. Some of these people are trained as scientists, yet they are willing to suspend the use of their training, to simply believe the manipilated information. At times I wonder whether they realize that we are still on the tail end of the warm up from the last Ice Age.

Some of my family have great fun prodding my folks and I into discussions on this subject. I've also had great fun sending links to articles about recent record cold events in the US. I intentionally look for supporting evidence for my Viking information. Was there specific archeological information that you found on the grapes? Currently grapes don't have a long enough growing season in Maine to produce enough fruit to allow wineries to grow their own grapes. Maine wineries resort to shipping in grapes or juice and making wine from other fruit like apples and blueberries.

If grape growing was viable further North than today, that would indicate that we have a good bit of warming to go before we return to a similar temperature at the abandoned Viking settltments.

Grapes in Northumberland in 1100 A.D.

As a history buff I can tell you there is nothing that drives the warming Enviroscare people into disquiet like recorded human history. I hope this info gives you a baseline you can research & develop to counter their junk science.

The premise of a steady state climate is not supported by established events. There has been no stable period of climate during the Holocene, our own climatic era, which began with the end of the last ice age 12,000 years ago. During the Holocene there have been numerous sub-periods with dramatically varied climate, such as the warm Holocene Optimum (7,000 B.C. to 3,000 B.C., during which humanity began to flourish, and advance technologically), the warm Roman Optimum (200 B.C. to 400 A.D., a time of abundant crops that promoted the empire), the cold Dark Ages (400 A.D. to 900 A.D., during which the Nile River froze, major cities were abandoned, Grain crops failed to grow in Central Europe, the Roman Empire fell apart, and pestilence and famine were widespread), the Medieval Warm Period (900 A.D. to 1300 A.D., during which agriculture flourished, wealth increased, and dozens of lavish examples of Gothic architecture were created), the Little Ice Age (1300 to 1850, during much of which plague, crop failures, witch burnings, food riots -- and even revolutions, including the French Revolution -- were the rule of thumb), followed by our own time of relative warmth (1850 to present, during which population has increased, technology and medical advances have been astonishing, and agriculture has flourished). The global warming hype is a way to advance the cause of Collectivism. First they take what is a natural event (Global warming & cooling cycles) and claim that it's being caused by mankind, then they foment hysteria by over-blowing the conclusions.

Examples of this include: 60's food crisis, Y2K, and today with the Mex. Swine Flu hype. Chicken Little environmentalism  sequesters monies from needed environmental remediation
