Talking About the Economy, Couric Drops the ‘D-Bomb’

  • Bookmark and Share

Want to get your evening news show off with a bang? Add the word ‘depression’ to your opening.

CBS Evening News Anchor Katie Couric opened her Jan. 26 broadcast saying, “Good evening everyone. The recession is deepening and for tens of thousands of workers today, it just turned into a downright depression. They just found out they’re losing their jobs.”

Couric might want to be a bit more careful using the “D-word.” As BMI has covered extensively, the media has a track record of talking making economic troubles out to be worse than they are – specifically throwing the word “depression” around in spite of evidence to the contrary.

Besides, later in the broadcast, CBS reporter Anthony Mason said, “The unemployment rate, now 7.2 percent, will continue to rise, says Standard & Poors, and could hit 9 percent early next year.” During the Great Depression, unemployment reached 24 percent.

My dad refers to her as "Bad News" Katie.

Watching her spout bad news all the time would cause anybody to be in a depression.

Deep Down, She Wants There To Be A Depression

Leftists need a full blown depression to wipe out the private sector - the evil corporations, et al - in order to start with a clean slate in building their new socialist/secular society. Katie sees herself as an oracle, clearing the way for The One, by terrorizing the American public. Downturns and scrimping and material suffering is what the American Left and socialism is all about.

Thanks Katie, you're a real brick.

Playing with words like

Playing with words like "depression" isn't some sort of cute game. Sure, losing your job is depressing. But people have lost their jobs during all sorts of economic scenarios. Ms. Couric, you are beyond irresponsible. What's depressing is that you still have your job.

It's Obama's fault if we have a Depression, Katie...

I mean, after all, he is the President now.

What's more depressing is that you still have a job, Eva Braun.  Who are you screwing?  I could find a dead hippopotamus, bloated by maggots and flies, to deliver the news with more accuracy and enthusiasm than you (and probably be more attractive as well).

I had forgotten about Eva

I had forgotten about Eva Braun.  LOL.  The folks here at NB make my day.

Those who have not swords can still die upon them.

Clinton Era Futzing

While I'm not agreeing w/ Bad News Katie... Didn't the Clinton admin mess with how unemployment numbers were determined so they looked better than they really were? I think the Bush admin just carried over those same questions, forumulas and such. So I'm assuming we're using them now... which means, wouldn't the unemployment be a little higher than the numbers we're getting? I think the NYPost wrote something about this a few months back.

"D" word

newsisblues

I'll drop a "D" word about Katie....DUMMY!

Does anyone listen?

Really, does anyone care what she says?  I have never watched her news broadcast and only watched GMA because my wife listened to it which was enough to convince me she was a twit.

katie the economist

Well, Katie, what economic theory books have you ever read, besides, Barack Gonna Send You A Check, AKA Marxism for Dummies? Of course you can't actually compare now to the Great Depression, except by inference so you can equate Bush with Hoover, rather than intellegently discuss how Barack the First (FDR) didn't solve the problem, but actualy made things worse.  That would require critical thinking skills, which you  sorely lack and besides being a bitch to Palin was so much more fun and in character.

Obama's depression

Love it ...

I am curious

Can this become a self-fulfilling prophecy? Can we be talked into an economic depression by scaring everyone half silly?

Change: When the winds of change blow hard enough, the most trivial of things can become deadly projectiles. From a Poster

Yes

At least they (the media) thinks so, or else why are they doing it?

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.

Well they certainly have the

Well they certainly have the ability to effect consumer confidence. But doesn't that seemingly violate their goal of boosting The One and his ability to save it?

Sure it can

Strategy is when you make decisions based on what you think everyone else is doing. The news media is, for better or worse, the main method that most people have in assessing what others are doing. Even if you distrust the media, you find yourself uncertain about what everyone else is doing.

People invest when they feel confident in the company or industry. But if the news media is reporting that the industry (or the whole economy) is in trouble, it's hard to gather up a lot of confidence. You might think that investors would depend on their own sources, but have you ever walked onto the floor of an investment house? They all have TVs in their cubicles.

My friends in the financial industry all agree that the economy is not driven by hope for gain; instead, it's driven by fear of loss. Fear is a function of uncertainty, and the media accelerates ignorance.

    Hyping bad news is a

Hyping bad news is a long time staple of the old format Katie works at.  Getting people to get into the habit of turning on a news recap show at a particular time every evening is a difficult task in todays world.  Because most people are already aware of the news of the day these old fashioned newscasts have to 'repackage' the news of the day and sell it as something you will only get from them.

If I was in a position of power and influence...

Just to shake things up, I'd drop the C-bomb on Nancy Pelosi, the A--H---bomb on Olberman, and the P----bomb on Chris Matthews.  Then sit back, crack open a beer and watch the libs hyperventilate in ridiculous self-righteousness.

I like the way Rush

I like the way Rush described how folks should respond to Obami's stimulus package:  Set up protest at his house in Chicago for the loss of 40K jobs in ONE day, and more to come.  Set up a camp right outside his house just like they did in Crawford for President Bush,  a lot of the camp is still there.

Where is the out cry?  Where are the sign carryers?

"Hmmm," says Katie...

"...If only I could work the word 'depression' into my story about a recession, that would be really cool and sneaky and nobody would probably even notice at all."

If I remember correctly, unemployment average around 7 percent for the 8 years of Clinton.  How come no doom and gloom then?

What the media does is akin to yelling "FIRE" in a crowded theatre.

Normally I don't root for the disease. But in your case I am willing to make and exception.

What? Katie dropped a Dumb bomb on herself?

Funny, she seems about as dumb as usual to me.

BTW-I read the other day that the unemployment rate stayed under 10% for an entire year following the Crash of 1929.

It didn't start heading for 25% until after the federal government stepped in to "fix" the economy.

Just thought I'd throw that in here.

Right Dave.... Govt.

Govt. isn't the solution...Govt. is the PROBLEM!

Missing the point

Folks, I hate liberal media as much as the rest of you.

That being said, don't underestimate the deepness of this recession. We are just gettting started with the pain.

When I'll start to worry

My Dad is 89, Mom is 88; I asked them what they thought of the current "depression". They both laughed. Dad said he'll start to call it a depression when he has to go back to eating onion and mustard sandwiches like he did the last time around.

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

Thomas Jefferson

Where Did the Onions Come From?

To which my father-in-law would have added, "and I had to steal the onions!"

"and I had to steal the onions!"

After stealing the onions my Dad would say he "had to walk barefoot in the snow to school and it was uphill both ways." to which Mom replyed, "In my day we didn't have feet".

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

Thomas Jefferson

Ah, the Hyperbole of Old!

My mother had a variant of the "both ways uphill in the snow" comment. She was the third of six, and supposedly her elder sister, who was a year or two younger than the eldest, a boy, insisted that she be allowed to go to school with him. Well, in the middle 20s things were a wee bit different, with respect to regulations, so she was allowed to go. However, since she was so young and small, my grandfather purpotedly carried her to and from school everyday in the wintertime, in snow so deep he stepped over the power/telephone lines!

Now that all the participants are dead, I think of the questions I should have asked:

  • Did you really have power lines in northern Wisconsin in the 20s?
  • Did Grandpa wear snowshoes, or just walk on the top because Aunt Gin was so small and light?
  • When did he have time to get his rum-running done? (He was a bootlegger)

My grandparents told us

My grandparents told us about how they had to eat lard sandwiches and put cardboard in their shoes if they got holes in them.

It's tough times no doubt...but nothing like back in the 30s.

Bread

Notice the common theme here - 'bread' is in both tales. I was told once, or read, don't remember which, that wheat is the only food that contains everything a human needs to survive. It may be boring to eat, day in and day out, but it's not an accident that 'manna from heaven' was a wheat product, and that prisoners are served bread and water as a minimum subsistence diet.

funkdome, you are incorrect

funkdome, you are incorrect about just getting started in recession? This downturn will prolong only if gubment gets too involved (think stimulus package).

left alone, we will have a recession and increasing unemployment, deep as 1981, but start the rebound by 2nd half of 2009, albeit very slowly. Input costs are low, global markets bigger, interest rates low, infrastructure in place. Too many positive exogenous indicators. Only government intervention, for communist agenda, can prolong this recession. Unfortunately, the communists will intervene, slow recovery and get their communist agenda started with the help of a sycophant, economic no nothing press, like couric, roberts, gibson and a socialist group headed krugman, reich, etc. THEY KNOW NOTHING!

I'd love to be wrong

I am praying you are right :)

Obama's Stimulus will cause a Depression

The more they "stimulate" and interfere in the market the worse this is going to get:

At least you can't question Katie's Patriotism

..she has none.

I don't know why they keep

I don't know why they keep tap dancing around the root of all this...the tying up of trillions in the housing market with Fannie and Freddie at the center.

Those two entities should not even exist, or if they really, really, really need to, they need to be divorced from the profitability aspect.

Just buy up the mortgages and let the FHA handle them and unfreeze the credit.  Put Fannie and Freddie in the dust bin of history as yet two more examples of failed quasi-socialist programs.

That they have no interest in doing any of the above, makes my conviction that this may have been purposely orchestrated, or at least purposely kept going, even stronger.

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.
