Paul Ryan Exposes Stephanopoulos's Strange Failure to Note Interview with Obama

After ignoring its own 2009 clip of Obama denying his health-care law was a tax increase, ABC finally played the snippet of the President on Sunday's This Week -- but bizarrely, they failed to mention that it was theirs. Host George Stephanopoulos highlighted an ad from Americans for Prosperity that included the clip, but omitted that he conducted the interview where the President made this denial.

Later in the program, Rep. Paul Ryan exposed what the ABC News host omitted, that "the President, on your show, said this is not a tax." [audio available here; video below the jump]

Stephanopoulos brought on White House chief of staff Jack Lew to discuss the Supreme Court's decision upholding ObamaCare. He led the interview by noting how "the President's opponents have already seized on the ruling by Chief Justice Roberts that the health care survives because the payment it requires is considered a tax, not a penalty, and they are putting millions behind that message in key battleground states." The host then played the Americans for Prosperity spot.

George Stephanopoulos, ABC News Anchor | NewsBusters.orgEven though a graphic in the ad disclosed that the Obama clip came from an "ABC News interview, 9/20/09," Stephanopoulos glossed over this detail. He continued by asking Lew, "As you know, President Obama denied all along that this was a tax. Is he now prepared to defend it?"

Thirteen minutes later, during an interview of Paul Ryan, the ABC host pressed the Republican congressman about his budget plan, which includes Medicare reform. At one point, Ryan attacked the President's health care law: "We don't raid Medicare for Obamacare. We repeal Obamacare and extend the solvency of the Medicare trust fund in our budget." Stephanopoulos followed up by asking, "So you reject the charge that this could open up to the charge of hypocrisy?" The House Budget Committee chairman replied by pointing out what the former Clinton administration official didn't earlier acknowledge:

RYAN: No. Look -- look at the hypocrisy. The President, on your show, said this is not a tax. Then, he sent his solicitor general to the Supreme Court to argue that it is a tax, in order to get this past the Supreme Court. The broken promises and the hypocrisy are becoming breathtaking from the President, who says one thing to get this past Congress, and then, another thing to get it past the Supreme Court.

Interestingly, on Monday's Today show, NBC's Chuck Todd played the Americans for Prosperity ad as well, and followed it with the clip of Ryan from This Week exposing Stephanopoulos's role in the 2009 Obama interview.

Liberals here won't even be able to ignore this blatant bias.

Sure they will; they'll just deny it.

Just like Debbie Wasserman Schultz-for-brains

Basically:  We called it a penalty for the sheeple.  We argued it as a tax to get it past SCOTUS.  Now that that's done, we go back to calling it a penalty.

looks like self insured will get screwed too

Submitted by dmacleo on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 8:17pm.

from the way I read it lot of self insured (those with a plan tailored to them) will be screwed as the plan may not meet all requirements. stuff like contraception and stuff like that.
so it won't be approved plan...so they lose too.
friend of mine who was huge advocate for obamacare just found out his plan will not meet requirements, hes pretty flabbergasted now.

So if I were a rich enough

Submitted by Deskpilot on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 11:26pm.

Single male and I had a personalized, super-duper self insurance plan, I would be taxed to all get out because I didn't provide myself abortion coverage? Yup, sounds about right for Obamacare(s about only himself)!
Is it even possible anymore to pay a health provider IN FULL by cash, check, or credit card (big reward points there!)

That is correct

Submitted by texusmc on Tue, 07/03/2012 - 9:45am.

If you had a great super-duper self insurance plan, and it didn't meet certain requirements, you can be penalized (Taxed) and it will come out of your return (amount you paid in). Now if you are smart (as in you obviously are with a super-duper self insurance plan) your return is only a few hundred bucks. But if your Penalty (tax) is MORE than your return, guess what? That is right folks, interest and more penalties are added on! So much for Keeping your insurance you want!.

"So let me get this straight. It’s a penalty that I have to pay, to the IRS, if I don’t comply. Yea, that sounds exactly like a tax, you insufferable mayo headed dingbat."

Mine too

Submitted by texusmc on Tue, 07/03/2012 - 9:47am.

my family coverage doubled and went from a 95-5 to a 80-20 split. Now I have a $1,500.00 deductible that I have to meet even before that 80% kicks in. And the co-pays (which also went up) don't count towards the $1,500.00)

and he is also trying to have me pay more for my Tri-Care as well!

This is literally the

Submitted by TheLoudDreamer on Tue, 07/03/2012 - 1:31pm.

This is literally the definition of doublethink.
SERIOUSLY.

"Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them. The Party intellectual knows in which direction his memories must be altered; he therefore knows that he is playing tricks with reality; but by the exercise of doublethink he also satisfies himself that reality is not violated. The process has to be conscious, or it would not be carried out with sufficient precision, but it also has to be unconscious, or it would bring with it a feeling of falsity and hence of guilt."

It's legal cause it's a tax; but it isn't, so don't worry....
