CBS's Gayle King Heartily Endorses Bloomberg's Soda Ban Proposal
On Friday's CBS This Morning, Gayle King sided with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg over his controversial proposed ban of soft drinks over 16 ounces in size: "I'm all for anything that's going to make us healthy." Guest Jonathan Waxman, a chef in the Big Apple, also endorsed the Bloomberg plan: "I'm kind of happy that someone's making a stand here, because I think that it's empty calories." [audio available here; video below the jump]
Guest anchor Mo Rocca raised the Bloomberg controversy near the end of the segment with Waxman, who once appeared as contestant on Bravo's Top Chef Masters program in 2010: "We have to ask you about what you think of Mayor Bloomberg's decree, his edict that...the big sugary drinks are out."
The chef didn't directly answer the question at first. Instead, Waxman mentioned how he mentors schoolchildren to eat healthier and how he makes his own sweet drinks: "I mix soda myself at home -- fresh orange juice and soda water. That, to me, seems like the right thing for people to do."
King apparently wasn't satisfied by this answer, and asked, "Do you think the ban's a good idea? On the big drinks?" Waxman replied with his endorsement, and the Obama-boosting anchor seconded it:
WAXMAN: You know what? I think -- you know, I'd rather have people do it on their own, but if people need a road sign, why not? You know, I think -- you know, I'm kind of happy that someone's making a stand here, because I think that it's empty calories. It's not what we should be eating or drinking in our lives.
KING: All right-
ROCCA: He's making us healthier. I don't love the nanny state, but I love 'nanny' Bloomberg. (Rocca and King laugh)
WAXMAN: No, no. I one hundred percent agree. (laughs)
KING: Yes. Listen, I'm all for anything that's going to make us healthy. Thank you, Jonathan.

Notice how the msm is using
Submitted by winston smith on Fri, 06/01/2012 - 7:30pm.
Notice how the msm is using the term "sugary drinks" instead of the usual term soft drink? In typical media fashion, every one of the networks, including some of the radio reports I've been hearing are using the same excessive term---- "sugary" when reporting on the partial soda ban. Amazing how fast the nets can get their ducks in a row when it comes to supporting any progressive 'nanny state' tactic. You could almost say its collusion. Each network saying exactly the same thing, all politicos agreeing with Bloomberg's decision, all saying it's necessary because of the "obesity crisis", all complimenting Bloomberg for his "bold, "revolutionary" decision, no one station's opinion detracting from the other's. And I guess this is their way of ensuring that there can be no legitimate opposition to average citizens having their consumer rights whittled away decree by decree. This is how it's done in the media today. Don't dare present both sides of an issue. Don't attempt to appeal to the intellect of the viewer. Just simply tell them what to believe, what to think and back it up with condescending appeals to emotion. They took the same devious tack in the Trayvon Martin shooting. They all have to agree with one another -- none of them going 'off-script' or else the lowly regular people might actually form an opposing opinion.
Another phony crisis
Submitted by DontFeedTheTrolls on Sat, 06/02/2012 - 8:32am.
I know this is entirely anecdotal, but most mornings between 7 and 8AM, I go for a walk. I try to vary my route so I see lots of kids on different corners waiting for their school buses, white kids, black kids, yellow kids, brown kids, every kind. I cannot recall seeing any who look obese. Sure, there are some 'husky' kids, and a couple potential linebackers, but I haven't noticed any roly-poly fat kids.
I also sometimes take a walk in the afternoon, and as I live in a college town, I see lots of 20-somethings wandering about, and I haven't noticed any fat ones there either.
I really think this is just another phony crisis made to give government even more control over our lives.
They're normalizing obese in commercials
Submitted by CO2Maker on Sat, 06/02/2012 - 9:47am.
Have you seen the Expedia commercial with a young Latino man juggling a cube of Expedia benefits. As the narrator talks, the scenes change from being on a plane to walking out of a hotel to another scene on the plane, where he is flanked by two children, a young girl on the left and a noticeably plump boy of about 6 or 8 on the right. They're all swaying back and forth, having loads of fun. The fat kid was the very first thing I paid attention to in an otherwise normal, forgettable ad.
Pudgy is the new normal, fat is becoming a protected category.
Embarrassment and shame clearly violate the charter of human rights.
[Yes yes. Caveat re: physiological predispositions, pathological conditions, etc. And bullying the fattie is bad, but so is letting your kid eat Snickers and Doritos instead of an actual meal and playing X-box rather than playing outside.]

Well, Hunny, I happen to think that Champagne is nothing but empty calories too, so I propose a Champagne ban for any sized bottle over the little one you find in a hotel mini-bar. You, know, those single shot bottles. No more Magnum bottles for you, Hunny. How do you feel about THAT? You SHOULD be delighted at the idea. After all, everything in moderation, right? Right?

Another stupid statement from Oprah's BFF. Go back into the background, Gayle.
So, Gayle, do you favor complete government control of our food supply, in the interest of making us all healthy?
Would you support a law that all employers have to provide facilities and an instructor and have their employees do 30 minutes of aerobics at the start of their work day? You know, like PT in the army?
How about limiting the foods that could be served in corporate cafeterias?
I guess I shouldn't give her any ideas.
Does anyone think this woman would have a snowball's chance in the Everglades of landing a show if not for her connection to Oprah?

Hypocrisy on stilts!
Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 06/01/2012 - 9:12pm.
I don't know Bloomberg likes soda, but he's a colossal hypocrite when it comes to salt.
Mr. Bloomberg, 67, likes his popcorn so salty that it burns others’ lips. (At Gracie Mansion, the cooks deliver it to him with a salt shaker.) He sprinkles so much salt on his morning bagel “that it’s like a pretzel,” said the manager at Viand, a Greek diner near Mr. Bloomberg’s Upper East Side town house.
Not even pizza is spared a coat of sodium. When the mayor sat down to eat a slice at Denino’s Pizzeria Tavern on Staten Island recently, this reporter spotted him applying six dashes of salt to it.
If you read the whole article, it looks like Mr. Bloomberg is trying to control his own dietary demons by forcing laws on everyone.
I wonder how Gayle's friend Oprah feels about this

That depends on which Oprah
Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 06/01/2012 - 9:14pm.
That depends on which Oprah you ask....the fat Oprah or the skinny Oprah. The pre- or post-Bob Greene Oprah. The Oprah who wants to be thin, or the Oprah who thinks it's about learning to love herself at 200 lbs.
I, for one, don't want anyone to ask her, because one of the things I'm the most sick of is hearing Oprah talk about her weight!!

Using your logic, it is feasible to control food intake of the population due to obesity. According to statistics, 35% of all Americans are overweight which to you, is permission to control people's lives and behavior.
Follow that thinking. 80,000 people every year are found to be HIV positive. 50% of all of those patients are African American teenagers. There are approximately 12million new cases of STD's yearly. An of those, 50% are teenagers.
With your LOGIC, it seems that perhaps we should ban all sexual activity by teenagers since it is a great risk to their health. They cant smoke, they cant drink, and they cant vote until they are 18 yrs of age. What say we deny all young people under the age of 18 from any sexual activity. It is in their best interest and we of course want healthy lives for our youngsters, .....right?
