CBS Enables NYC Mayor Bloomberg to Push For Gun Control

By Matthew Balan | March 29, 2012 | 21:44

Matthew Balan's picture

CBS This Morning on Thursday gave New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg a platform to boost his pro-gun control agenda. Anchors Erica Hill and Charlie Rose tossed softball questions at the billionaire politician, enabling him spout his liberal talking points in favor of stricter gun regulations. Rose and Hill even let Bloomberg lecture the press about their supposed responsibility to push for gun control.

The mayor forwarded a beyond irrational argument against armed self defense: "Somebody's banging on your door and says, I'm going to come in and kill you...And this guy's got the gun out...You're better off not having a gun." Bloomberg also bizarrely claimed that "America is the only place where there is a murder rate with guns. Other places have criminal problems; other places have murders. But here, it's a unique thing." [audio available here; video below the jump]

Hill raised the Trayvon Martin controversy towards the end of the segment and singled out the issue over a specific gun law in Florida: "You've been a outspoken proponent, obviously, of gun control for some time. As you watch what's happening in Florida with Trayvon Martin...what do you think of this 'stand your ground' law in Florida?"

The New York City mayor replied by denouncing the law, and included his "you're better off not having a gun" point:

BLOOMBERG: Well, it doesn't make any sense because you don't want people being vigilantes. They don't have the training; they don't have the expertise; there is no oversight. That's the police department's job. And all the statistics show if you, for example, have a gun at home, you're something like 22 times more likely to be killed by a gun. You picture this: somebody's banging on your door and says, I'm going to come in and kill you, and you say, wait a second: let me find the gun. Where did I put the ammunition? Where did I put the key? And this guy's got the gun out and you're (unintelligible) You're better off not having a gun.

The CBS anchor followed up with undemanding question: "Do you think this will lead to a national conversation?" Bloomberg answered, in part, with a oft-used liberal interpretation of the Second Amendment, that the component of the Bill of Right protects hunting, but otherwise, gun ownership should be severely restricted. After making his outlandish claim about America being singular in having to deal with gun violence, the mayor even hinted that some gun manufacturers should be imprisoned:

Michael Bloomberg, New York City Mayor | NewsBusters.orgBLOOMBERG: ...[T]he right to own arms- that's protected by the Second Amendment- but not have carry on campus, not have minors carrying guns, not have people with psychiatric problems or criminal records carrying guns. But we saw a disaster in Arizona where a congressperson was shot in the head and...All they [Congess] said is, let's make it worse; let's give more people guns....America is the only country in the world, I think, that has more guns than people. America is the only place where there is a murder rate with guns. Other places have criminal problems; other places have murders. But here, it's a unique thing, and what Congress did is they protected the gun industry as a separate industry and said, if the manufacturers know that guns are going to kill people, you still can't sue them....

If an automobile company makes a car that they know is going to run off the road every once in a while and kill people, we would stop them from selling the car and we'd probably put the management in jail. And yet, Congress protected the gun manufacturers who know the only reason people are buying armor-piercing bullets is to kill somebody- probably cops- because I've never seen a deer or an elk....wearing a bulletproof vest. So, we've got to do something about this, and so far, Congress has not had any courage to do it whatsoever.

The politician has obviously heard of all the gun violence south of the border in Mexico. His own "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" group claimed that the U.S. is mostly to blame for the gun trafficking to the drug cartels in the country. Yet, the Mexican government has a strict gun control policy that disarms law-abiding citizens, and helps the vicious drug criminals run rampant and victimize countless individuals.

Rose closed out the interview by setting up Bloomberg to give a call to action for gun control, including his call for the media to get more involved in pushing for this left-wing cause:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

ROSE: And are politicians prepared to go to the public and make the argument you're making?

BLOOMBERG: If you work them over enough, they probably will. I mean, it's really the Fourth Estate's job to explain to the public what's going on here and how the public gets Congress to do the right thing- and the President, the same thing.

In the end, Charlie, I've always believed elected officials generally- not all, but most- care about only three things: one, getting re-elected, because that's the way they make a living; two, keeping their party in power, because that makes it easier to get re-elected; and number three, see number one. That's- so, you know, they just- you have to explain to them, as the NRA does, that if they vote one way, they're going to pay a penalty at the ballot box. The NRA says vote for guns in the hands of everybody, or we'll take- we will keep you from getting re-elected. The public has to say, you vote for guns, and they're going to kill my kids; we're going to keep you from getting re-elected.

Earlier the segment, Bloomberg furthered another liberal pet project in calling for an end to the Bush tax cuts: "If you want to raise $4 trillion over the next ten years, which gets you...only halfway to a balanced budget, everybody's taxes have to go up. And the nice thing is, the President has the ability to do this, Charlie. He...can't say, Congress won't go along. All the President has to do is say, I am going to veto any bill that tries to stop the automatic ending of the Bush-era tax cuts for everybody. He's got enough votes to sustain a veto."

The relatively new morning show has a record of going tougher on conservatives than liberals. Just over a month earlier, on the February 28, 2012 edition of CBS This Morning, Rose lobbed a series of questions from the left at Rep. Paul Ryan. The journalist wondered if the trend at the time towards social issues in the Republican presidential race was "troubling." By contrast, the anchor tossed softballs at Obama campaign senior advisor Robert Gibbs on February 23.

Gun control is a great topic for misogynists like him.

He can prevent women from protecting themselves, and be safe from suit. Why? The SCOTUS has already said that the government/police cannot be held responsible for your safety.

So, if you hate women, do this: eliminate their ability to protect themselves, while hiding from responsibility under the umbrella of a court decision.

good going, Mayor Misogynist.

These liberals have a real "war on women" going on!!! Only in their war, women really do get brutally murdered.

but there are other countries in the world with a murder rate equal to or higher than the US. Instead of using guns, the murderers use rope, a knife, an axe, a blunt object or just throw people out of windows or use poison, right? So do those other countries restrict the sales of those items too?

A certain Mayor better go

Submitted by ant on Thu, 03/29/2012 - 10:36pm.

A certain Mayor better go back to eating sugar and salt, his brain cells are starving..oh wait...those dietary restrictions only apply to us peons, not our elite 'leaders'...oh, wow, another reason to own guns, defense from the tyranny of over-bearing, nanny-state fascists. Who'da thought? Besides the Founding Fathers. I mean..guns..not just for home invaders anymore.

So many fallacies to pick apart in this 'news' segment..too many. I love this though, "You've been an outspoken proponent..of gun control, for some time.." It's all in the News-speak. See, I'd have said something like, " You've been a radical, extremist opponent of the People's second amendment rights, for some time, along with many other freedoms... and how exactly do you 'control guns'? Is it similar to 'stopping' global warming?"

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says:

Submitted by gregfahey on Thu, 03/29/2012 - 10:47pm.

"Somebody's banging on your door and says, I'm going to come in and kill you...And this guy's got the gun out...You're better off not having a gun."

The follow up to ANY politician that states this nonsense should be:

"So if legislation is passed to your liking would you and other politicians that have 24/7 armed protection for them and their families, at tax payer expense no less, live under the same laws? When you say 'You're better off not having a gun' are you leading by example and going about with no armed protection?"

If not, aren't you implying that yourself and other politicians that would have the populace unarmed are more important than "average Americans"? In other words Mr. Mayor, are you saying that the right to defend one's family only applies to politicians and that the average American is 'expendable' by virtue of this inequality?"

"Isn't this why we left England over 200 years ago? So we would ALL live under the same laws and that the government was employed by The People and not the other way around?"

"Isn't it incredibly haughty as a multi-millionare, a 'one percenter' to suggest that you may have armed protection for your family and the 99% may not?"

"Is your life and the life of your family more important to defend than mine? That's what you seem to be implying here."

...for starters....

One more thing....

Submitted by gregfahey on Thu, 03/29/2012 - 11:03pm.

Bloomberg said:

"You picture this: somebody's banging on your door and says, I'm going to come in and kill you, and you say, wait a second: let me find the gun. Where did I put the ammunition? Where did I put the key? And this guy's got the gun out and you're (unintelligible) You're better off not having a gun."

He validated what the NRA and gun rights proponents have been saying for years about Left wing Liberal gun control laws like he has already imposed on citizens.

1) Keep your guns locked up.

2) Keep your ammo separate from your gun.

Now he claims those very things are the reason to NOT have a gun? What he REALLY should have said is this:

"You picture this: somebody's banging on your door and says, I'm going to come in and kill you, and you say, wait a second, the laws in this state make it a crime to not store my gun in a safe: let me go to the room where the safe is. Putting the light on now, need to enter the right combination. Be right there. Now where did I put the ammunition? Oh yeah, the ammo is in my other safe because the laws say this must be so for every gun owner. Hold on a sec. Where did I put the key? Oh yeah, also, the only ammo I can use is REALLY expensive and must be wall penetrating full metal jacket ammo. The laws passed painted hollow points as 'cop killer bullets' which really stop quicker than FMJ bullets. So, can we keep the shots fired to a minimum? And this guy's got the gun out and he's kicking the door down as the cops on the phone say "we'll be there in 10 minutes but, whatever you do, don't fire your gun or you'll be arrested!" You're better off not having a gun.....if you prefer death."

He's certifiable.

What a goddamn imbecile. When you buy a gun, the lock and key go in the junk drawer. The safest place to keep your defensive firearm is on your person. If you intend to use your firearm for defensive purposes, keep a round chambered. The best safety is your trigger finger and your brain.

"And yet, Congress protected the gun manufacturers who know the only reason people are buying armor-piercing bullets is to kill somebody- probably cops- because I've never seen a deer or an elk....wearing a bulletproof vest."

There's no such goddamn thing as armor piercing bullets. However, just about any center-fire rifle cartridge will penetrate body armor.

It really pisses me of when people that know neither jack nor shit about firearms try to act as if they are an expert on the topic.

One at a time Bloomers

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Mon, 04/02/2012 - 10:32am.

BLOOMBERG: Well, it doesn't make any sense because you don't want people being vigilantes. They don't have the training; they don't have the expertise; there is no oversight. That's the police department's job.

There are over 200,000,000 guns owned in the US. How many "vigilantes" make the news (and we all KNOW they would make headlines)?

BLOOMBERG: And all the statistics show if you, for example, have a gun at home, you're something like 22 times more likely to be killed by a gun.

Statistics that have, time and again, be debunked. Also non-sensical. If there are no guns in the home, then the likelihood of being shot tends to drop dramatically. And even assuming your 22x is accurate, what does that come out to in round numbers? There are over 2,000,000 defensive uses of firearms every year. I'm pretty sure that if there were over TWO MILLION accidental shootings per year, we'd have heard about it. Oh, BTW, many of those defensive uses didn't even involve discharging the firearm. Brandishing it scares the perp away.

BLOOMBERG: You picture this: somebody's banging on your door and says, I'm going to come in and kill you, and you say, wait a second: let me find the gun. Where did I put the ammunition? Where did I put the key? And this guy's got the gun out and you're (unintelligible) You're better off not having a gun.

This is obviously a scenario dreamt up in your tiny little closed mind. Anyone who has a gun in the home for self defense has it loaded and accessible. They will not (except in your near-perfect fantasy land) have to "find" their gun and ammo and unlock to weapon before using it.

BLOOMBERG: ...[T]he right to own arms- that's protected by the Second Amendment- but not have carry on campus, not have minors carrying guns, not have people with psychiatric problems or criminal records carrying guns.

Really? Last I checked, it said "the right to keep AND BEAR arms shall not be infringed". And minors, criminals, and psychos are already banned from even touching a gun. Not even a nice try Bloomers.

BLOOMBERG: But we saw a disaster in Arizona where a congressperson was shot in the head and...All they [Congess] said is, let's make it worse; let's give more people guns....

Where the hell was I? Congress didn't give ME a gun. If there was a gun giveaway, I WANT MINE!

BLOOMBERG: America is the only country in the world, I think, that has more guns than people.

Wrong again. At most, there are enough guns owned to equal one per adult person. Stop thinking. It's not a pretty sight.

BLOOMBERG: America is the only place where there is a murder rate with guns.

I didn't know that. No other country in the entire world has a gun murder rate. THAT's a hell of a statistic. I guess that means that we're the only country where people get shot by criminals. Let's not count Russia, most of South America, MEXICO, etc. They obviously have no gun-armed criminals there because YOU say so.

BLOOMBERG: ...Congress did is they protected the gun industry as a separate industry and said, if the manufacturers know that guns are going to kill people, you still can't sue them....

Car makers KNOW cars are going to kill people. Many more than die from guns. Haven't heard of many lawsuits against Chevy Bloomy. Why's that?

BLOOMBERG: If an automobile company makes a car that they know is going to run off the road every once in a while and kill people, we would stop them from selling the car and we'd probably put the management in jail. And yet, Congress protected the gun manufacturers who know the only reason people are buying armor-piercing bullets is to kill somebody- probably cops- because I've never seen a deer or an elk....wearing a bulletproof vest.

If a gun manufacturer makes a gun they KNOW will blow up in the shooter's hand, we would stop them from selling the gun and probably fine or jail them. And what do gun manufacturers have to do with armor-piercing bullets? Gun manufacturers manufacture GUNS. Ammunition manufacturers manufacture BULLETS. And an infinitesimal percentage of cop killings were done with armor piercing bullets.

BLOOMBERG: You picture this:

Submitted by IdahoJim on Fri, 03/30/2012 - 4:55pm.

Why? Would you rather be killed in cold blood, without a chance, or standing your ground, armed, and have a chance of NOT getting dead?

If I go down, I'd want to be blasting the sh*t out of whoever shoots at me.

BLOOMBERG: But we saw a disaster in Arizona where a congressperson was shot in the head and...All they [Congess] said is, let's make it worse; let's give more people guns....

Actually, several people were carrying at that event. But unlike the shooter, these folks instantly saw that there were too many innocent bystanders (the crowd) to make returning fire safe, so they did not fire at the wacko.

Mayor Bloomberg walks streets of New York City wearing a hoodie

Submitted by kennykatzen on Sat, 03/31/2012 - 5:02pm.

I think New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg needs to walk the streets of New York City at night wearing a hoodie, WITHOUT his 2 body guards. he has no problem using TAXPAYER PAID body guards for himself and his family.

Compensation just one NYPD detective who guards city officials is nearly $100,000, according to NYPD figures.

NY Mayors typically are protected by a five or six-person team of plainclothes detectives, including one who often goes ahead to secure the destination. There are generally three teams that rotate for the 24-hour job.

Bloomberg=Tyrant

Submitted by Merk3030 on Sun, 04/01/2012 - 12:02am.

Plain and simple. He is a power hungry plutocrat. He used an endless river of New York tax payer dollars to sue gun dealers in VA (who were small business owners) out of business because he cannot keep criminals from bringing firearms into the city. Just like he blames the gun for commiting criminal acts, not the criminals, he also blamed VA gun dealers.

I have the utmost disrespect for this man. He is despicable and the opposite of everything freedom stands for. He wants to be a prince in king barack's court. Just another corrupt and dirty politician. Any politician regardless of party, who try's to distroy our 2nd amendment rights should not be allowed in office.
