Fox Presses White House on Religious Freedom Controversy; Will Big Three Cover?

By Matthew Balan | January 31, 2012 | 22:46

Fox News's Ed Henry challenged White House Press Secretary Jay Carney during a Tuesday briefing over the growing controversy surrounding the Obama administration's move on January 20 to force most employers to cover sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraceptives in their health care policies without co-pay. This new federal mandate would force Catholic institutions, like hospitals and schools, to decide whether to obey it or follow the Church's teachings against contraception.

Anchor Megyn Kelly trumpeted that "this is turning into a big deal, and the White House... [is] saying they believe they have struck the appropriate balance...the Catholic Church...saying, how is it the appropriate balance to delay...the time at which we'd have to violate our consciences?"  [video clip below the jump] The Big Three networks, on the other hand, have all but ignored the issue during the past 11 days. Only CBS This Morning on Tuesday briefly mentioned the growing controversy.

CBS anchor Charlie Rose noted  "a headline in USA Today says Catholics blast federal birth control mandate....The Obama administration says large religious institutions will have to include birth control in their employees' health care plans."

Just before the bottom of the 2 pm Eastern hour of Fox News's America Live, Kelley spotlighted how "priests during Mass this past Sunday read letters aloud from the pulpit, talking about how this [the new HHS mandate] infringes on religious freedom." The anchor continued by playing a clip from the exchange between White House correspondent Ed Henry and Carney. Henry raised the issue with a strongly-worded question [for video of the full exchange between Henry and Carney and expanded coverage of the controversy, read this article by Fred Lucas of CNSNews.com, a division of the Media Research Center]:

Ed Henry, Fox News White House Correspondent | NewsBusters.orgHENRY: ...[M]y question would be, how does the administration justify having the federal government institute a law that basically forces people to violate their religious beliefs?

CARNEY: That misrepresents actually-

HENRY: How so?

CARNEY: What the decision about the implementation of the Affordable Care Act-

HENRY: How does that misrepresent-

CARNEY:  Well, let me answer. The decision was made, as we have said in the past- and Secretary Sebelius has said- after very careful consideration, and the administration believes that this proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious beliefs and increasing access to important preventive services. We will continue to work closely with religious groups during this transitional period to discuss their concerns.

It's important- to go to your point- that this approach does not signal any change at all in the administration's policy on conscience protections. The President and this administration have previously expressed strong support for existing conscience protections, including those relating to health care providers. That support continues. I also would just note that our robust partnerships with the Catholic Church and other communities of faith will continue. The administration has provided over $2 billion to Catholic organizations over the past three years, in addition to numerous nonfinancial partnerships that promote healthy communities and serve the common good.

Kelly then remarked that Carney's remarks were "clearly a written response that [he] was reading and had prepared. I mean, this is turning into a big deal, and the White House apparently knows it....So you can see the White House responding, saying they believe they have struck the appropriate balance...the Catholic Church had already spoken to that last week, saying, how is it the appropriate balance to delay, by eight months to a year, the time at which we'd have to violate our consciences?"

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Even with the statement from Carney, and his exchange with Henry, the Big Three networks ignored the story completely on their evening news broadcasts on Tuesday. However, on CBS Evening News, Scott Pelley found time for a news brief on a recent recall of oral contraceptives by the drug maker Pfizer.

On Tuesday morning, Mollie Hemingway of GetReligion.org blog documented how the controversy was "surprisingly undercovered on Sunday and Monday" by the wider media. Hemingway ripped ABC News's online coverage of the issue, but complimented the "great piece" by CNN. She also made the following conclusion about the paltry coverage so far:

Obviously there are people in the Obama administration and elsewhere who believe in birth control, sterilization and abortifacient insurance coverage mandates and, further, that religious exemptions to these mandates are wrong. That's an important part of the story and one that has been fairy well covered. But underplaying how seriously the Catholic Church, its leaders and other religious groups are taking this is a disservice to readers of all persuasions.

That's Obama's idea of

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 01/31/2012 - 11:20pm.

That's Obama's idea of "appropriate balance"....giving the Church a year to change its teaching.  As our Bishop of the Harrisburg (PA) Diocese said in his letter read in all our parishes on Sunday: it is an unprecedented mandate to violate conscience.

Entire letter here

He also minced no words in saying, We cannot- we will not -comply with this unjust law. (emphasis mine)

Obama blew it big time by setting up this confrontation with the Catholic Church.

He WILL lose this battle.

Motherbelt, yeap, parishes

Submitted by Liberallies on Tue, 01/31/2012 - 11:25pm.

Motherbelt,

yeap, parishes around the city of Chicago have also spoken out, loud and clear, against this mandate by the Obama administration. I can tell you that friends of mine who claim to be Catholics, but are very Liberal, are up in arms against Obama on this one. The letter you linked is being read in all the parishes and most priests are demanding that Obama respect the Freedom of Religion of Catholics and all religions.

I believe the Obama administration played their cards beleiving that the Catholic Church was not going to fight back.

Well, Obama has a fight on its hand and it includes millions upon millions of the Roman Catholic Church. This is NOT about politics, this is about forcing a religion, in fact quite a few religions, to go against their religious beliefs.

Obama will not win this one, I am 100% sure of it.

The Bishop of Pittsburgh went

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 01/31/2012 - 11:40pm.

The Bishop of Pittsburgh went one better; he said this: “

The Obama administration has just told the Catholics of the United States, ‘To Hell with you!’ There is no other way to put it. To Hell with your religious beliefs. To Hell with your religious liberty. To Hell with your freedom of conscience.”

This is a huge deal and I

Submitted by Liberallies on Tue, 01/31/2012 - 11:21pm.

This is a huge deal and I don't think the Obama administration is ready for the backlash it is starting to get. This is a clear violation of Freedom of Religion.

If you want contraceptives, pay it out of your pocket or work for an employer that will provide it, but stop forcing your moral beliefs on the Roman Catholic Church or any other religion!

The Brits were never so

Submitted by celator on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 12:13am.

The Brits were never so rallied against the NAZI government as when they looked up and saw the V rockets and bombs falling on their beloved London. I've heard it called the "Bombing London" motivation to finally rouse a people to fight back at the enemy. This is what the Obama administration is openly doing with their insane "contraceptive" policy. That Obama would so casually approve such a policy says all we need to klnow about his character and his agenda.

It's not only contraception, it's also the abortive "morning after" pill which is being mandated in Catholic insurance policies. As others have noted here, Obama has no idea what a fight he is now facing with his invasion of the protected practice of one's religious beliefs.

Our Bishops, from coast to coast, have rallied in their opposition to this insane policy like nothing I have ever seen. Our own Bishop mandated his powerful letter be read at every Mass on Sunday, and printed in every church bulletin. The fight is on, and you know what? Obama is going to lose this one.

"I also would just note that our robust partnerships with the Catholic Church and other communities of faith will continue."

Really? Has anyone actually been a recipient of this so-called "robust relationship with the Catholic Church and other communities of faith"?

I guess I haven't noticed with all the verbal insults, public exclusions and legal assaults.

I'd like to see an itemized

I'd like to see an itemized statement indicating where that $2 billion dollars went exactly.

The Catholic church has a nasty record of collusion with the state in the darkest of times.

The Catholic church is more a political institution than a spiritual one.

"I'd like to see an itemized statement indicating where that $2 billion dollars went exactly."

The logical follow-up question is, why do you believe his figure at face value?

"The Catholic church has a nasty record of collusion with the state in the darkest of times. The Catholic church is more a political institution than a spiritual one."

A-ha, now I see why you believed the figure so quickly. You, like the radical left, have an axe to grind against the Catholic Church.

The Time for the Bishops

Submitted by kiwikit on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 6:40am.

to stand up in a unified manner to the tyrant. I've been disappointed again and again at the scandal of their allowing politicians who push for allowance of abortion if not even propagandizing for it: Sibelius, Pelosi, Kennedy, Leahy etc etc. All should be publicly excommunicated with their cohorts who vote for 24/7 abortion. Allowing them to continue to call themselves Catholic is a slap-in-the-face to Catholics who follow the tenets of the Church and a sign to those questioning that morality of abortion that the Church doesn't care one way or the other. Speak out!

Does this affect any other faiths? I am wondering about Quakers, Jews, etc., not to mention Muslims. I am not sure how those outside the Catholic church see this.

I saw the CNN Report on this.

Submitted by DumbCanuck on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 9:28am.

I saw a CNN report on this that made me want to throw a shoe at the TV screen. Good thing I didn't. That's a pretty expensive screen!

The reporter emphasized that the policy included exemptions, but that the Catholic Church were not satisfied with those exemptions, making the Church sound even more extreme. But the reporter failed to describe what the exemption actually was, and the reason the Church finds this "accommodation" unacceptable.

Finally, the reporter ends with the notion that despite the fact that the entire USCCB is speaking out against this policy shift, and pretty much all of the priests read the letter during the following Sunday's homily, (with standing ovations at some services -- unheard of during a Catholic mass) that the policy was opposed by only a few priests, and implied that the majority of Catholics couldn't care less.

Get it? The Owe-beyme administration is reasonable, attempting to strike a fair balance, while the Catholic Church are portrayed as extremists who want to impose their moralistic views on everyone else. I guess they're trying to insinuate another transgression of separation of church and state.

"It's important- to go to your point- that this approach does not signal any change at all in the administration's policy on conscience protections. The President and this administration have previously expressed strong support for existing conscience protections, including those relating to health care providers." -- Jay Carney

Michael Balan and NB, Have

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 11:02am.

Michael Balan and NB,

Have you guys seen this story? Found it at Foxnews radio. Do you know if anyone else has reported on it?

http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/top-stories/occupiers-dump-condoms-...

OWS disgusting and truly evil behavior. It is getting ugly out there. Amazing that the media was all over the Tea Party as ugly, mean spirited and they have done nothing, but to praise OWS.

Pro-choicers protested and no one bothered them, pro-lifers prosted and they were attacked. Where is the media outrage?

As ZENIT, a Catholic advocacy news agency pointed out in a 2008 article titled What Happened to the Catholic Vote?, more than half of U.S. Catholics voted for "a presidential candidate at odds with the Church's stance on issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage, despite the urging of more than 50 heads of dioceses to support pro-life candidates."

This May Be Cynical

Submitted by stratman on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 7:00pm.

But... Other considerations in this attack on religious freedoms are

1)  Obama and crew may realize they will have to retract this breach of Constitutional rights, but they have introduced the desired concept into public consciousness.  The incrementalism of Leftists is to shoot for the brass ring but always fall back on infiltration, propaganda and baby steps to achieve the objective.  They will never stop trying to achieve secular Statist Ameritopia, and the reason there is no compromise to be given.  One year or ten years, it doesn't matter.  NO!

2)  The Left will use the successful repelling of their own anti-Constitutional breach to empower their own pet projects in some fashion, such as assisting Islamists to further inculcate Sharia law into the American legal system or public loud speaker call to prayer five times a day.  After all, aren't those Mooslim religious right's?

Obama and his thug posse have already been at war with most everything principled since the Revolution, so why not try to completely erase all the history and demolish the central reason for the pilgrim's colonization of America - freedom from religious persecution.

Never trust a Leftist.
