Come Again? MSNBC's Wagner Claims Reagan 'Would Be A Democrat' Today

Alex Wagner made an eye-popping remark on her MSNBC program on Wednesday, as she hinted that she agreed with former Obama spokesman Bill Burton's assertion that Ronald Reagan would feel out of place in today's GOP. When Burton claimed that "Reagan wouldn't have a chance in this Republican primary right now," Wagner stunningly replied, "I think he'd be a Democrat probably" [audio available here; video below the jump].

The anchor, a former employee of the left-leaning Center for American Progress, also touted a quote from Thomas Mann of The Brookings Institution and Norman Ornstein of AEI, who claim in an upcoming book that the Republican Party has become "an insurgent outlier- ideologically extreme...scornful of compromise...and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition."

After reading the quote, Wagner turned to Ryan Lizza of The New Yorker, who published the excerpt from Mann and Ornstein in a recent article titled "The Obama Memos: The making of a post-post-partisan Presidency." Lizza channeled an oft-repeated talking point by liberals that the GOP has moved far to the right:

LIZZA: ...You start looking at how the two parties have separated- how they've become more homogeneous and ideologically distant. And I've always thought of this as a story of two- happening equally on both sides. It's just not true. One party has moved further to the right than the other party has moved to the left, and I think this is a really difficult concept for reporters to wrap their head around, because it doesn't seem fair to point that out. And I think it's important to note that. If you look at the political science on ideology, the Republican Party in the House has moved six times further to the right than the Democrats have on the left since the '70s. You can't understand politics right now without recognizing that...Mann and Ornstein...point that out...and it does explain why Obama's had some difficulty.

I think, on the other side, Obama himself in the White House was, frankly, naive about their ability to overcome that. I think the way Obama described the problem- both in his speeches, and his books before he got to Washington- was in a way that didn't recognize how far the Republican Party had gone to the right. And I think the first three years of his administration are a lesson in that subject

Later in the segment, which began 21 minutes into the 12 pm Eastern hour, Burton, who was Obama's 2008 campaign press secretary, and was later deputy White House press secretary, used Lizza's point as a springboard to make his claim about Reagan, which led to Wagner's head-turning line, which she seemingly made in a half-joking manner:

Alex Wagner, MSNBC Anchor | NewsBusters.orgBURTON: Look, I think there's a bigger dynamic in play than just what's happening in the House and what happened this time around. If you look at- you know, Richard Nixon started the EPA, Ronald Reagan was for a nuclear-free world- I mean, Ronald Reagan wouldn't have a chance in this Republican primary right now, and now, you've got-

WAGNER: I think he'd be a Democrat probably-

BURTON: (laughs) He certainly- there would certainly be no room for him. He would be in the Huntsman wing of the party, if anything, and not have a shot. And now, you've got candidates like Mitt Romney, who says, you know, many immigrants are just here for a free ride. And Newt Gingrich, who thinks that we got to bring capital gains [taxes] down to zero percent-

Despite The New Yorker journalist's earlier contention about the Republican Party, the MSNBC anchor then acknowledged that there has been more of a mutual polarization:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

WAGNER: ...It's worth mentioning, though, in terms of demographics and redistricting- I mean, that is supporting, sort of, ideological extremes, right? Pew- 2008 study- shows that in 2008, 48% of voters lived in counties where either Obama or McCain won by at least 20 percentage points. In 1976, it was 27% of all voters lived in those landslide counties. So it's increasingly, you know, it's- sort of, ideological extremes are favored.

Hahaha

Submitted by tcm14 on Wed, 01/25/2012 - 9:54pm.

I have been laughing so hard at the Dem's latest quotes about Reagan.

Just for the record, Reagan would never make it today because the left would have him labelled as a far-right wingnut before he even got out of the gate. All the candidates today except maybe Santorum and (formerly) Bachmann are to the left of Reagan.

I don't even know why the left cares so much to revise history about Reagan. Probably they are realizing their character assassination of him hasn't worked and history sees him as a great President so they are trying to co-opt him.

I think this is one reason why as people age they become more conservative because you start to realize the left is lying when you were around to see for yourself the stuff they are lying about.

Leftist faux-admiration for Reagan

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 01/25/2012 - 10:06pm.

LIZZA:  ". . .  If you look at the political science on ideology, the Republican Party in the House has moved six times further to the right than the Democrats have on the left since the '70s. You can't understand politics right now without recognizing that...Mann and Ornstein...point that out..."

First, let's recognize that the term political science is an oxymoron. Then we can ask the question by what yardstick has this 6:1 stuff been measured?

LIZZA: ". . .  Richard Nixon started the EPA, Ronald Reagan was for a nuclear-free world- I mean, Ronald Reagan wouldn't have a chance in this Republican primary right now, . . ."

Truman dropped two A-bombs and attempted to draft striking steel workers into the Army to get them back to work; JFK escalated our military presence in Vietnam, and brought us to the brink of nuclear war; and LBJ greatly escalated the Vietnam War, and couldn't figure out how to extract us from it.

Would they stand a chance getting the nomination in today's Democratic Party?  Not hardly.

WAGNER: I think he'd be a Democrat probably-

Say what?  Apparently she's never heard this Reagan quote, "I didn't leave the Democratic Party; the Democratic Party left me."

Did Wagner even know that Reagan broke the back of PATCO, the air traffic controller union that went on strike in violation of Federal law?  The Democrats and their union bosses have initiated a recall of Gov. Scott Walker for doing far less than what Reagan did.

Wagner is a total twit.

There are no prominent Democrats today whom Reagan would be comfortable with (And I say that as one who is no Reagan fan.).

Obama is a Muslim- Obama can

Submitted by ant on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 12:43am.

Obama is a Muslim- Obama can recite the 'call to prayer' perfectly, but can't get a quote from Abraham Lincoln right, Obama stutters 'my muslim faith' while talking to G. Stephie, Obama attends a muslim school in Kenya, yes, Kenya. Obama says the 'call to prayer' is the most beautiful sound on Earth. check.

Obama is a socialist- if it quacks like a duck..check.

Obama has no birth certificate/hates America- O has shown no birth certificate, or any other records, Obama calls the Constitution a series of negatives, calls America arrogant, not-exceptional,racist, etc. Obama wishes he could be more like a leader of China, for example. Helps the UN compile a list of human rights violations aimed at the US. Obama is not a 'natural born' citizen,,if anything he says is true, his Father was not an American citizen. so..check and check.

The earth is 6,000 years old- non-sequitur and a moot point

Obama is stupid - check.

Rich corporations should pay no taxes,- who said that? Besides Obama's poals at GE. The poor should pay more taxes.-You mean more than 0? Most that I know on welfare get refund checks from the IRS every year, despite the fact that they live OFF OF TAX MONEY. And besides..who said the poor should have their taxes raised..who?..besides Obama's "under my plan, energy costs will necessarily sky-rocket."?

America is a Christian Nation?- over 80% identify as Christians, if we.as a Nation weren't founded on the unalienable rights endowed by our Creator as a right of natural birth..you probably wouldn't have the freedom to be the idiot you are..How much of your opinions do you think would be acceptable in secular Nations like North Korea or Muslim-majority Nations. Why don't you move there and find out?

Global Warming is a proven hoax and a rather obvious one- CO2 is a pollutant?..puhlease..weren't we supposed to be in some pretty deep sh#t right now?..why, yes we were. Check. Hey, but here's another good example of libtardedness,.. based on EPA regulations we are going to need an additive in gasoline to prevent GW made from...guess what? trees..yes, kill trees for gas to save us from global warming..could you libtards at least be polite enough to not so obviously, insultingly BS us?

Wall Street?- Well, not exactly..see I knew a carpenter that traded and invested and did pretty well, at least before..and it's not his fault..many businesses on Wall Street not responsible for the economic collapse.. Apple, Kelloggs,Garmin, etc..Dodd and Frank,? yes...Mortgages to illegal aliens, struggling single parent working class households, fraud..all encouraged by Dodd and Frank and their relationship with Fannie and Freddie?most definitely. Congress-critters privy to inside information that dumped millions in stock when they had the advantage over everyone else of seeing what was coming? most likely.Irresponsible and inexcusable spending by government? Well, the crazy TeaParty was talking about that before it was hip..back when they were being demonized,,,and that was well before the calm, peaceful, and clarifying message of Occutard.

If anybody should shut-up, it's you, ignorant bitch.

Now let's do some analysis

Submitted by Quasi-socialist on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 10:55am.

Let's do some analysis, instead of spouting. Some democrats think GWB blew up the WTC. So in your phrasing: Dems think the government blew up the WTC; Dems are truthers.

Now, we have NO accounts of someone saying "Hey, you know what W told me? He blew up the WTC." But we have accounts of the Prime Minister of Egypt saying something like "President Obama assured me that he has always been a Muslim." Obama admits that his mop could be called socialist.

Dems thought Bush was like Hitler (Same s--- different a------) which only illustrates a profound historical illiteracy. GWB didn't stage an insurrection, he didn't almost march on Washington, actualy the list of things that GWB didn't do that Hitler did (the s---) is tremendous, but the slogan is what counts--and calling people Nazis.

Hey, ya know what? Dems live in filth. Dems rape. Dems crap on cop cars. Dems break windows and abuse the donation of food and bathrooms from sympathizers. Dems bite fingers off of political opposition. Dems are socialists. Dems like dictators like Mao and Castro.

Really, I don't happen to support the opinion that Obama is a Muslim, but I don't think it's anywhere near a litmus test for sanity. As far as Obama being a socialist, I think his rhetoric is unmistakeably socialists. So what? I'm ok with some socialism. What I don't like in Obama and Dem socialists is the Marxism, soft or the harder variety when they laud strong arm tactics of Mao, Castro, Guevara, and other Marxists.

Obama wanted to "get to a single payer system" for healthcare at one time. You can argue that he has changed his mind, but such an argument is not irresistible, or again, a litmus test for sanity. Marxism over and over again informs Obama's heritage.

Out of power, I admired that Obama metered his Marxism. In power, he's a constant threat for government overreach--as well as all-out deception what with his party/union-bill aka "Stimulus".

I agree completely. Obama is a terrible President, no question. Not only is he completely lacking executive skills and unable to negotiate, he does not even comprehend that, as president of the entire nation, it is incumbent upon him to manage the affairs of all the people of the nation. By refusing to work with Congress to help solve the nation’s severe and significant problems, he essentially admits that he is miscast as president and has no business being president.

Yes, he is the most partisan president ever. And that is a very important reason why he is the worst president ever.

The Presidents job is to manage the executive branch and work with the other two branches. It is not the job of the President to manage the affairs of all the people in the country. He is not a king, emperor, or dictator (yet). He is not even a leader of the American people. He was elected as the representative of the people to do a job that the population needs done. Any leadership is directed at the executive branch alone.

Even at that Obama has failed, and I sure would not stand for him or any liberal to even attempt to manage me.

I recently had a similar debate with a libtard, using the examples of Republicans in the past passing Amnesty, raising taxes, the EPA, abortion, and others...but I think they miss one very important point. These things were matters of compromise or believing propaganda (such as abortion 'safe, rare, and legal'). We have learned since these mistakes, that Democrats can't be trusted when it comes to compromise. So it's really not that the right has moved further right (six degrees? Really? How do they figure that out?)..it's that we learned Democrats are liars, untrustworthy, and not to be 'compromised' with. It of course has helped that the Democrats have spiraled into leftist insanity, deception and darkness. As these two twits exemplify.

Obama wants to pull the plug on all the business friendly boards and such. and create one huge government machine that is designed to be hostile to business interests.

Check the list of the entities that he wants to "streamline by elimination".

That is what it looks like,IdahoJim

So far it looks like he's focusing on at least 6 trade and commerce entities. I couldn't stomach looking over his SOTU speech again so I offer these;

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/203965-obama-looks-to-merge-t...

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jan/13/obama-seeks-power-stream...

I'm all for eliminating redudancy and all, but I notice the big 'pain in the arse' agencies such as HHS, EPA and others that he has newly created aren't included. And it also doesn't guarantee a decline in spending just because two agencies are merged..in fact, he touted just a month ago that one such action would save $6 billion over ten years..so what's that? He saved us 8 hours worth of government spending over the course of ten years? I believe nothing until I see it and am firmly against any plan that enables government to enact laws and regulations against the People quicker and more efficiently that they do now. Even if it 'saves' one whole child from Obama-imposed 'debt by virtue of birth'. The man already has shown he doesn't know to create a job-friendly environment...why we should believe his re-managing of commerce agencies will help is beyond me.

First Lincoln, now Reagan

Submitted by krendler on Wed, 01/25/2012 - 11:12pm.

according to libtards, both apparently Democrats all along, we just didn't know it.

On the other hand, they tell us the racist DixieCrats of the 40s were actually Republicans.

In the incoherent minds of liberals, facts, logic, and history have no meaning and no importance. Up is left, down is north, and anyone who dares to contradict them is a racist.

Not in a million years....Wagner is delusional...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 01/25/2012 - 11:18pm.

It's amazing how these idiot Dems love to try to co-opt Reagan and his legacy today...These are the same fools who trashed Reagan and pretty much considered him the devil incarnate while he was president, and for years after...hypocritical jackasses.

And speaking of hypocritical jackasses, I have had it up to here with Gingrich running around trying to make it sound as though he was joined at the hip with Reagan, and was essentially one of Reagan's right hand men, when it simply is not true...Read this article about this by Elliot Abrams in the National Review online-Very interesting indeed.

It's MUCH more likely that JFK would be a Republican today.

A RINO, yes, but most definitely not a donkey.

a Democrat today? No likely. I like how the left is trying to bring the memory of dear Ronnie into their camp for their own motivations. It's sad that they're so naive' in the ways of the world the truths of reality

Typical Leftist Shotgun Booking

Submitted by ljacone on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 11:26am.

I remember last year (or maybe it was 2010) when the MSM would constantly compare Obama to Reagan in attempt to "shotgun book" their Chosen One into some sort of popularity. "Shotgun booking" is a wrestling term where you throw a bunch of ideas all at once at the audience to see which ones they like; you run with those and ignore the rest.

With Newt's advertising reference Reagan extensively (especially here in SC), it only follows that the MSM will then try their damnedest to position Reagan as a Democrat. It's laughable, but so is the intellect of a lot of voters.

How timely

Submitted by ant on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 1:31pm.

For this media jibberish to come up shortly before Reagan's birthday. It's been a few weeks since the 'Jesus was a socialist' meme was 'shotgunned'. I expect a return on that theme sometime around Easter. The MSM can't let a Christian holiday go by without flinging some 'manure' on the walls.
