Gayle King Sucks Up to Friend Michelle Obama; Lets Her Throw Race Charge

New anchor Gayle King tossed softballs at admitted friend Michelle Obama on Wednesday's CBS This Morning. King sympathized with the First Lady over how many supposedly see her. When her guest dropped a racially-tinged charge, that "that's been an image that people have tried to paint of me since...the day Barack announced, that I'm some angry black woman," she replied, "How do you deal with that image?"

During the twelve-plus minute interview, which aired in two segments, the close associate of Oprah Winfrey also especially sympathized with Mrs. Obama over charges against her in a recent book: "I think it's frustrating for her to see so many untruths. You know, I read the book, too....and I'm thinking- well, I was there. That didn't happen, that didn't happen, that didn't happen. And she never told Carla Bruni Sarkozy that living in the White House was hell- quite the opposite is how she feels."

King started out the first segment of the interview by asking the First Lady about the book, "The Obamas," by New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor: "If reading the book- and you take out parts of the book, you would think, Michelle Obama is angry, she's unhappy, she feels burdened, she feels frustrated. Do you feel frustrated as First Lady of the United States?"

When Mrs. Obama denied these feelings, the CBS anchor followed up by asking about the apparent "friction" depicted in the book between the First Lady and two of the President's advisors, Rahm Emanuel and Robert Gibbs. The guest raised her "angry black woman" label when King explained what the book charged:

First Lady Michelle Obama; & Gayle King, CBS News Anchor | NewsBusters.orgOBAMA: ...I am one of his biggest confidantes, but he has dozens of really smart people who surround him. That's not to say that we don't have discussions and conversations. That's not to say that my husband doesn't know how I feel. But, you know, this notion that I'm sitting in meetings and having, you know, conversations and conflict with staff-

KING: Yeah. No, it never said you were sitting in meetings. It said that if you were unhappy, you would say something to the President, and the President, in turn, would go to the meeting and say well, she feels we've lost our- she feels, you know, maybe, this could have been handled differently, and that he would raise some of your concerns. I mean, that does not surprise you, that he would do that?

OBAMA: No, not at all-

KING: That would not surprise you?

OBAMA: Right. You know, I guess it's more interesting to imagine this conflicted situation here and a strong woman and you know- but that's been an image that people have tried to paint of me since, you know, the day Barack announced, that I'm some angry black woman.

KING:  How do you deal with that- that image?

OBAMA: You know, I just try to be me, and my hope is that over time, people get to know me, and they get to judge me for me.

After the first segment of the interview concluded, the anchor sat down with co-anchors Charlie Rose and Erica Hill to talk about the interview. Rose noted that "there seems to be a nice chemistry there. I mean, you've known this person for a long time." In reply, King acknowledged that "I think we should say it's no secret here at the table that we're friends." He also asked, "Did she seem to you like she wanted to get some things off her chest?" This is where she came to Mrs. Obama's defense.

KING: I think Charlie, that is such a great question, because the answer is yes and no. You know, we had reached out to the First Lady back before Christmas, and she had agreed to do this interview because she wanted to support the launch, quite frankly. She was very excited about the show, and she wanted to participate in the premiere- lucky for us....you know, she has not read the book, she doesn't intend to read the book, and I think it's frustrating for her to see so many untruths. You know, I read the book, too. I pulled an all-nighter, like you do in college, and read the book, and I'm thinking- well, I was there. That didn't happen, that didn't happen, that didn't happen. And she never told Carla Bruni Sarkozy that living in the White House was hell- quite the opposite is how she feels.

The transcript of the first segment of Gayle King's interview of First Lady Michelle Obama, which aired at the bottom of the 7 am Eastern hour of Wednesday's CBS This Morning:

GAYLE KING: I sat down with Michelle Obama yesterday in her office. We talked about a wide range of issues. But we started with a story making headlines this week. There's a new book that talks about the First Lady's relationship with the West Wing and her husband.

KING (from pre-recorded interview): Now, it's my understanding that you have not read the book.

FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA: Yeah, I don't- I never read these books. There are so many books that have my picture on the cover, my name on it, and I don't even know what's going on. So I've just gotten in the habit of not reading other people's impressions of people.

KING: If reading the book- and you take out parts of the book, you would think, Michelle Obama is angry, she's unhappy, she feels burdened, she feels frustrated. Do you feel frustrated as First Lady of the United States?

OBAMA:  I love this job. It is- it has been a privilege from day one. Now, there are challenges with being a mother and trying to keep your kids sane, and I worry a lot about that. I mean, if there's any anxiety that I feel, it's because I want to make sure that my girls come out of this on the other end whole. But me, Barack- we're grownups. You know, all the ups and downs- you know, we take it on.

KING: Even though you haven't read the book, I do think it's raised some things-

OBAMA: You have to tell me what's in there-

KING: Okay. (laughs) I'd be glad to tell you. Let start with Rahm Emanuel. Jodi Kantor says that there was friction between you and Rahm Emanuel, that you had some concerns about how the President was being advised, that the two of you did not get along, and that it created some tension between the East Wing and the West Wing. Was that true?

OBAMA:  Rahm is and Amy, his wife, are some of our dearest friends. Rahm and I have never had a crossed word. He's a funny guy.

KING: Never had a cross word with Rahm Emanuel?

OBAMA: We never had a cross word. I mean, I don't have conversations with my husband's staff. I don't go to the meetings. I don't have- our staffs work together really well. So if there's communication that needs to happen, it happens between staffs. My chief of staff talks to his chief of staff. So if there were ever an issue, it would go through that channel anyway. I can count the number of times I go over to the West Wing- period. You know, I can count the number of times-

KING: How many times is it? (laughs) No, I'm kidding, I'm kidding.

OBAMA: I mean, we could. We could probably sit down and go through, and it's usually for official functions, or things that we have to do. But, you know, I do care deeply about my husband. I am his biggest ally-

KING: Biggest confidante-

OBAMA: It's not just because- I am one of his biggest confidantes, but he has dozens of really smart people who surround him.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

OBAMA: You know, I just try to be me, and my hope is that over time, people get to know me, and they get to judge me for me.

KING: The book also says something about Robert Gibbs, that during- I remember this story with Carla Bruni- Carla Bruni Sarkozy- who, in a book, said that the First Lady said living in the White House, being in the White House was hell. And that, you know, he cursed the situation, and he cursed you specifically. And I was wondering, were you ever told that? Were you aware of that?

OBAMA: No.

KING: You had never heard that Robert Gibbs cursed you and said something very unflattering, where he thought that he handled-

OBAMA: No, no-

KING: Am I the first person to tell that you?

OBAMA: No. I heard that- that was one of the things from the book that I heard. Robert Gibbs is a trusted adviser-

KING: And remains so-

OBAMA: He's been a good friend and remains so. And I'm sure that we could go day-to-day and find things people wish they didn't say to each other or said. People stumble. People make mistakes. People every day- in families, in churches, in schools all over the country- they say things they don't mean sometimes. That's why I don't read these books, because it's- you know, it's a game in so many ways that, you know, doesn't really get- you know, I mean, who can write about how I feel? Who? What third person can tell me how I feel, or anybody, for that matter?

Freedom of speech sux. Gayle King really shouldn't allow people to answer interview questions honestly, and she certainly shouldn't allow a black woman to mention the way some people see her.

Next thing you know Mrs Obama is going to come out with some scheme to improve health care for vets and their families. Creep.

really get to the heart of the matter. Like why MO has the need to vacation so much, why she feels the need to worry about white Irish people in Chicago...Oh no, those types of questions weren't asked, only the questions of how does being a victim make you feel.

Meanwhile, Laura Bush was asked question about her husband's policies and how people perceived them.

Liberal media bias once again.

Sorry Johnny Jr., your opinion doesn't mean much, unabashed lib troll full of democratic talking points that you are.

And, no, I can't get past my disgust of a woman who spends taxpayer recklessly on constant vacationing, who listed her daughters as advisors on one of her trips, who received a job at a Chicago hospital in exchange for political favors from her politician husband, who then tried to initiate a program of sending indigent patients on a bus to another hospital to save money instead of treating those patients, who could sit and listen to Jeremiah Wright curse the country she lives in...I could go on, but I can't get past my disgust for this woman.

I don't remember any

Submitted by Kenny Bunkport on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 9:05pm.

I don't remember any "friends" of Laura Bush interviewing her either. I'm sure Laura had a sycophantic friend or two, with a journalism background, who could have asked her pre-approved questions in a very complimentary manner.

I imagine that idea would have been nixed by the networks as not being professional or newsworthy - as was this bit of propaganda fluff.

LOL. This is CBS gushing over Michelle Obama right at the beginning of an election year, and it's her self-admitted friend that's interviewing her! It just screams of the liberal media sucking up to Mr. and Mrs. Obama again, like they did 4 years ago. If CBS wanted to look a lot less ridiculous, they should have sent Erica Hill to do this interview.

What do you think King should have asked? Friends interview friends all the time and the first lady interview isn't exactly known as a hard hitting interview. Do you believe King shouldn't have asked her about the book, and that Obama shouldn't have responded to accusations? I don't know what you're looking for here.

Submitted by acaiguana on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 8:58pm.

According to what I hear from you, she should have just penned the letter and let it be published?

And to what end?

To the end that she is actually married to the Obama machine.  And my interview would have been much more about:

1)  What does he actually believe, people don't know.

2)  Why does he think America needs to be 'fundamentally transformed?"

3)  How does he think centralized planning of the economy works when it never has worked?

4)  Why do you have any standing on diet when you are simply married to the President?

5)  What happened in your life that led you to believe that Government was a solution rather than a barrier to the solution.

One Word Less And It's A Completely Different Story

Submitted by Intellectual Honesty on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 9:20pm.

Original: "...that I'm some angry black woman" as opposed to the politically smart parsing, "...that I'm some angry woman." BIG difference. In her actual words she needlessly confines herself to the 13% of the public that shares her ancestry, effectively cutting off the other 87% from "feeling her pain" and in essence places herself in the proverbial "it's a black thing" box.

The horrible truth is that she does come across as an "angry woman" that stands in contrast (Hillary excluded) with the likes of Betty, Rosalynn, Nancy, Barbara and Laura who all are, regardless of party, strong women. Sure, any in that list have their moments but seemed to understand that in going accompanying their husband into the White House they had a role to fill but it wasn't to upstage or distract the policies of their husband. And that is not some kind of "they should bake cookies" statement on my part; someday a woman will be elected President and I would expect the same of their spouse.

And as others noted, having an interview conducted by a self-described material/character witness to the subject at hand does nothing but perpetuate the theory that a less favorable interviewer would possibly allow that angry woman mask to slip a little bit more.

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 1:21am.

I've gotta believe that Minnie the Mooch DOES wear wig-hats - you can't have as many different hair-styles and hair-lengths, like she does, without one, right??? C'mon, Blonde - you're a woman - tell me I'm right!!!

I just don't think that she is any more believable in ANYTHING that she says than her wimp-assed girlie-man poser-boy husband. so maybe I'm just a little bit 'jaded'!!! But..............I have proof and examples to back up my opinions............I didn't just come up with them out of thin air. Oh............did I say 'thin'??? Will that upset the Mooooooooooooooche???? I'm 6'3", and I'll bet you an Obama 3-dollar bill that Moooooooooooooochelle CAN'T fit into my jeans!!! And her's would be baggy on me!!!

So much for arugula, steak, and deep-fried Snicker bars.

I see the same thing. I've seen this story like four times now, and every time I see it, it reads like Michelle is saying, "..ever since Barack announced that I'm some angry black woman." Hilarious!

I actually I think Gayle did alright, she didn't let the 'angry black woman' get away with some opaque statements, and she was a little tougher than what we've come to expect from the slobbering cheerleaders.

Hey ant - what kind of abuse

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 1:24am.

Hey ant - what kind of abuse do you think Boy Blunder took for saying that Minnie the Mooch was an 'angry black woman'??? No wonder that little girlie-ass punk crosses his legs so professionally!!!

But I'll tell you one thing - the Mooooooooooooooch IS a helluva a lot more 'black' than Boy BlahBlah will EVER be - and she knows it!!! And so does he!!! This guy is a phony is everything that he purports to be...........although his Marxist/communist/racist/re-distributionist beliefs remain steadfast...........which is probably evidenced by the growing number of 'insiders' who, for some reason, CAN'T work with him - and we ARE talking about hardline lib/Democrats here!!!

Well, there also might be a little problem with his narcissism, ego, and lack of intellligence, huh???

Submitted by ant on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 12:15pm.

Oh, he's a genius. Now he just gave a speech praising the EPA for creating jobs for us peasants. 'They (EPA) touch the lives of so many Americans everyday..blah..blah..blah..'. Yeah, Mr. Brilliant, in the form of penalties, regulations, and higher fuel prices. He's either the biggest liar we've ever had the displeasure of having in the Oval Office or the biggest dope. Or both. And then Michelle tells us we just don't understand his achievements...oh, we understand alright..that's why we're so pissed and soooo done with the both of ya.

BTW, maybe an Open Thread idea, how often do you think NB gets scoured by DHS? if at all? When they talked about being transparent, I thought they meant themselves, not the American people.

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 1:12pm.

Yeah, the EPA 'touches' our lives in much the same way as a sledge hammer 'touches' a railroad tie!!! KABOOM!!! Welcome to 40,000 laws, penalties, interest, fines, regulations, compliances, and that great phrase - 'the cost of doing business' - except that it's really hard to get business done, simply and efficiently, with those costs to deal with!!!

I have no doubt whatsoever that NB and other websites are being 'monitered' by Janet Incompitano, along with Big Brother and the Holding Company...............they probably have all of our emails too.

Actually, I'd be willing to bet that if the Obama flag was our country's national flag (and I DID predict that would be something they would probably love to do..........and although my prediction hasn't come true, I'm still betting that - if it were possible - they would get rid of 'Old Glory', since it is such an example of evil and bad deeds, and replace it with the UN powder blue with the big red O Obama flag). Then, the Mooooooooch could say 'we now have the fag's flag'!!!

The incomparable NewsBubba

Submitted by ant on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 1:52pm.

The incomparable NewsBubba was just on another thread mentioning this 'monitoring' BS. Can you believe we've gotten to this point? And not even just on that front..on everything. We have a government that will address the grievances of foreign illegal aliens but show scorn and contempt for the citizens...defund the military in such a volatile time on the Islamic front..and so many other examples, too many to mention briefly....death by a thousand cuts. This cancer of 'progressivism' in our government and institutions must be stopped.

If these government pigs want to check me out, maybe they'll find I've been looking for work...and offer me a job. I could be a jack-booted thug like them...and I hear it pays well..only question is, do I have to have a frontal lobotomy to qualify as a government worker?

Amy - you loved Pearl's

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 01/13/2012 - 1:42am.

Amy - you loved Pearl's voice??? Well, I have to give her credit for her passion and her commitment and her boldness - but I never was enchanted by her voice - she always seemed to be screaming, or sounding too hoarse. But then again, I've got a lot of Big Mama Thortan's CD's, and that was Pearls idol - or at least one of them - so it's sort of an unfair comparison. But, you know - I was around back then.............and if Janis turned a lot of people on to what she was doing, then it's OK with me.

And you did a term paper on her in high school??? Jeeez, what friggin' high school did you go to??? Hippie High!!! Stoned Secondary School??? Marijuana Matriculaton???

When I was in high school.............I would have gotten an 'F' for even attempting to try that, although I did go to college for one year, and I did a term paper on 'da blues'................and got an A+!!!! Just goes to show you what a little bullsh*t will do!!!

But I was playing in bands at the time.............so I felt that I was living a little bit about what I was saying.

Her passion gives me chills - Babs is the only other singer who ever did. I went to HS in the late 70's in Callie - enough said, lol!

Funny story - I was searching for a subject for the term paper, and came across some rock 'n roll book, that chronicled who was with who before they were in the Animals, Led, etc., saw her name, and went to the town library and checked out her cassettes, and listened to her over and over and just adore her. I don't watch IDOL, but I did see a youtube on Crystal Bowersox {sp?} and she's got it too.

Southern Comfort became my signature drink, but I never went for the heroin, lol!!! I weighed all of 106, would by a 5th and a pint, so when someone wanted some, they could take from the pint - that 5th was *mine* for the night!!! I came from a family of alcoholics, so I didn't know that wasn't normal! I haven't had a drink {except for a taste of hubby's wine on his b-day one year} in at least 15 years.

And yes, I got an A ;-P

We don't think Michelle is just an angry black woman.

Submitted by drsamherman on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 11:28pm.

She is an angry, greedy black woman. She is the very prototype of the Obama machine political pseudo-aristocracy from the Chicago Democrat mob. She runs crying to a sycophantic media stooge to lob her some glowing, ego-feeding interview to appear human yet she will turn around again in a month or two to take some idiotic junket to some foreign country at taxpayer expense.

The Chicago patient dumping scheme is just so like her. She falls back on her victimization mantra every time. For someone who was at one time a licensed attorney (we've been over that before), she has absolutely the worst public relations sense in the universe. Jay Carney as his fellow rectal sycophants try this thinly disguised rehabilitation of her, and she will probably follow it, as noted above, with some immersion in some charity to feign some penitence for her own boorish actions. Funny how images of her running around in Air Force One will be playing on every channel, every day once the campaigns kick into high gear. Someone as clueless as Jay Carney is pathologically incapable of controlling those optics.

'I swear to you that I am NOT a....'

Submitted by Slyrr on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 12:50am.

Maybe if Moochelle doesn't want people to look at her as an angry black woman, she should stop being such an angry black woman.

Everyone knows what a hooker is, the only question is the price. If you have to go around and say to everyone 'I swear to you that I am not a whore', then you're pretty much admitting you've got a reputation as a whore.

By the same token, if you have to run around screaming 'I swear to you that I am NOT an angry black woman', then you can pretty much bet that the person doing the screaming is an angry black woman.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Submitted by Slyrr on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 10:27am.

I agree with you for the most part. But there ARE times I've seen Moochelle smiling. When she's on vacation, she smiles. When she's at lavish resorts and luxury hotels spending taxpayer money to treat herself like a queen, then she has the biggest crocodile grin you'll ever see. When she knows she's stealing money from taxpayers to bankrupt the nation, and make other people broke while enriching herself, she smiles like only a tyrant can smile. When she sees ol' Barry-boy destroying jobs, putting people on unemployment, ruining lives and spreading misery and pain, you'll see her smiling all right. Making everyone else miserable is the only thing that makes this angry black woman smile.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.
