CBS Broadcasts 'Sexual Assault' Claims Against Herman Cain

By Matthew Balan | November 02, 2011 | 12:42

Matthew Balan's picture

On Wednesday's Early Show, CBS's Betty Nguyen incorrectly reported that Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain had been accused of "sexual assault" by two women. Nguyen later accurately reported that the women actually leveled sexual harassment allegations against Cain [video below the jump; audio clip available here].

The fill-in news anchor used the erroneous term during a 14-second news brief 37 minutes into the 7 am Eastern hour: "One of two women who accuse Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain of sexual assault wants to speak out. The woman's lawyer say she wants to be released from a confidentiality agreement, so that she can publically respond to Cain's recent claims regarding the case."

Nguyen gave a second brief on the Cain story just under an hour later, but this time, correctly summarized the latest development on the controversy:

NGUYEN: One of the women who accused Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain of sexual harassment wants to tell her story. The New York Times reports one of the accusers was paid $35,000 in severance pay by the National Restaurant Association, after she said an encounter with Cain made her uncomfortable. A lawyer for the second woman wants the restaurant association to waive the confidentiality deal.

Herman Cain, (R), Presidential Candidate | NewsBusters.orgJOEL BENNETT, ATTORNEY FOR ACCUSER: I think the National Restaurant Association ought to waive the confidentiality and non-disparagement positions, and let the two women, if they choose to do so, come forward and tell their stories, so that it can get a complete public airing.

NGUYEN: When Cain was asked why he doesn't give his permission to let the accuser speak, he said there are legal questions that must be answered first.

Despite this accurate second brief, CBS didn't issue a correction concerning the initial report during the remainder of The Early Show.

Sexual harrassment or sexual assault. It's all the same since we are talking about an evil conservative. Especially since Cain is black and didn't march in the 60's. Eeeeevil!! Love today's media and the "quality" of the work they do. :)

Rush just reported that he has the "cached" WaPo online story from yesterday that says the case is so old the lawyer doesn't have the file, the gag agreement OR any memory of going to the NRA to deal with this.  He thinks it might have been handled by fax and phone. (Some big deal, huh?) and that they have deleted this info from the story currently online.

If this is true, it changes things.

Submitted by MidAmerica on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 1:12pm.

We must remember that this event supposedly happened back before Bill Clinton had destroyed the power of the feminist movement.  Back then the alpha females were power walking through the business world and whoa to any male cretin who dared look at them in any way other than with submissive body language.  A man's career could be ended on the complaint of any woman.

But then came Bill Clinton and the silence of the feminists.

Bill Clinton made sexual harassment and demeaning behavior towards women acceptable again.

Submitted by ForeverOnTheRight on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 1:13pm.

I just don't understand this confidentiality agreement and how it would muzzle a person from being able to speak up about alleged sexual assault or harassment. An confidentiality agreement should only stop a person from publicly speaking of the inner workings of a company. Sexual assault or harassment should have been taken care of by HR a long time ago as long as it where legit complaint.

As the MSM delves deeper into its self-created speculative morass, MSMers will -- wittingly or unwittingly -- embellish and even change the meaning of important details.

It's is indeed possible that Ms. Nguyen does not understand the difference between sexual harassment and sexual assault.

It is also possible that the wild speculations are an attempt to draw out Cain and/or his accusers to force the details into the open.

CBS knew exactly what their reporter was coached to say, and what it meant, all along. Another news source, somewhere on the left, used the term sexual "abuse". Talk about a conspiracy.

This woman will turn out to be a professional gold digger. The word is she was incompetent at her job and when she started to fear she was going to be let go, she filed her complaint to either stop a firing action or soften the landing. When she couldn't prove her allegations, she was shown the door for severance.

It will be found out that she has filed other complaints for settlements as well.

Herman Cain

Submitted by bkeyser on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 6:01pm.

Not sure yet where to come down on this; I'm certainly not going to just discount unwanted advances, or sexual assault, or sexual harassment - if it's true, he needs to quietly drop back and then pull out after a poor showing in Iowa (assuming...) However, this is politics, and war is more fair than politics.

Latest word is that the guy who dropped the story to Politico is a Perry supporter (if this has been covered already here today, forgive me; I just got home.) Former employee at NRA and he claims the incident(s) such as they were, occurred in a restaurant in Northern Virginia in the late 90's. Now the guy runs a SuperPAC and has actively promoted Rick Perry.

Others are saying it's a Romney supporter, but I've seen much less detail on that front.

The newest claim comes from an Iowa radio host who claims Cain made untoward remarks to his female staff just last month. From Politico:

POLITICO has learned that the incident involved a staffer for Steve Deace, an influential conservative talk radio host who hosts a nationally syndicated show in Des Moines. And Deace says he did take offense.

Deace, who penned an opinion piece critical of Cain earlier this month, told POLITICO in an email that Cain said "awkward" and "inappropriate" things to the staff at his station.

"Like awkward/inappropriate things he's said to two females on my staff, that the fact the guy's wife is never around...that's almost always a warning flag to me," Deace wrote. "But I chose to leave that stuff out [of the opinion piece] and make it about his record and not the personal stuff."

Pressed about what exactly Cain said to the employees of his show, Deace responded by describing how he himself treats his staff.

"Many a man has been done in by the inability to control his urges,” Deace wrote. “I am no different and just as vulnerable as any other man, which is why I put safeguards around me and hold myself accountable to my wife and other men in my life. Especially since I have very talented employees that happen to be women. I go out of my way to treat them like my sisters. For example, I wouldn't tell them or any other woman I am not married to nor related to how pretty she is."

See, this is where it starts to get catty. This guy, described as a Christian Conservative, sounds like what he's saying is:

"Look, I'm a horn dog. I've always been a horny bastard and from my experience, if a married guy goes out without his wife, he's a horny sumbitch too. Me? I don't talk to other women unless I've got a telephone line or a door between us; my wife Mary made sure of that. Yessir. But this Cain fella comes into the station last month and starts talkin about how sweet my staff is for getting him coffee. Sweet? Come on. Everybody knows that's a line. Hell, I used that one myself ... before I found Jesus and Mary's lawyer. All I know is this: I don't trust this guy with his pizza business and his deep voice and all. He's bad news. And I'm makin sure to keep my girls ... I mean, the talented women that work in the station, as far away from him as I can. But that Rick Perry, though huh? He might not be a fancy talker like that Hermanator fella, but damn if I don't like that cowboy hat."

that's why I don't buy this new allegation. Sounds like bandwagon jumping to me. The guy apparently wrote an article for some publication and then to Politico says he didn't want to talk about the personal stuff, rather he wanted to concentrate on his (Cain's) record. That tells me right there he's no ally of Herman Cain. He's a political operative with a radio show who was instrumental in Huckabee's Iowa run in '08. I don't know what this guy claims Cain said to the "talented women" on his staff, but it was enough for him to "take offense" but not say anything until after the Politico story broke? Somewhere Tiger Woods is thinking, "Yup, I know this story."

Submitted by bkeyser on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 6:18pm.

In yesterday's OT I said this:

"There is some question at this point who took the story to Politico. Some are suggesting it was another candidate. No one said "GOP", but I think that's the inference. If so, that candidate is throwing out a last-ditch effort to remove the new front-runner and elevate himself or herself back into the race. Bachmann? Personally, I don't think it's her style though the fact that this story involves alleged mistreatment (albeit to a seemingly minor and subjective degree) of women could make her look guilty. Santorum? Don't know much about him but he's definitely a social conservative and judging by his debate performances, angry. Definitely not Newt; the irony there is just too palpable. Huntsman? Nah. He knows he's toast. Romney? No need from his camp. He's been the only steady candidate and would kill his chances if it went public. Perry? You'd think he'd be extra-sensitive to the race issue given the charges levied against him. Rove? Okay, not a candidate, but... And then there's Obama." [Emphasis added]

From HotAir:

"Interviewed today on KTOK’s Mullins in the Morning, [Chris] Wilson, of Wilson-Perkins-Allen Opinion Research headquartered in Washington, D.C. explained he was a witness to the incident. “I was the pollster at the National Restaurant Association when Herman Cain was head of it and I was around a couple of times when this happened and anyone who was involved with the NRA at the time, knew that this was gonna come up.”"

[Ed Morrissey] "However, Wilson isn’t only linked to NRA and Cain from years gone by. His firm has conducted polling in this presidential race for the Make Us Great Again PAC. And guess which candidate is favored by MUGA-PAC? Why, none other than … Rick Perry. The PAC has no formal connection to Perry’s campaign, but it’s certainly boosting Perry as the Republican nominee in the primary."

Clearly, I don't know what I'm talking about.

I have my doubts about the whole story. This isn't something that has dogged Cain for period of time, whereas with Clinton, the rumors of his womanizing were rampant during his time as governor.

All I can say with surety is that the left is scared to death of Cain and will push this as hard as possible, true or not.

They didn't recognize Cain*

Submitted by cajun2 on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 6:30pm.

Herman Cain is a southern gentleman.  Southerners use "manners" where  ever they go.  This man acknowledged that someone did him a courtesy even though he was the "boss"..  He used a term called "sweetie" and said thank you.  This is typical of the liberal elites today that they are unable to accept simple manners but instead relate only to their own narcissistic responses or motives.

Cajun uses the terms cher or cherie frequently here at NB to thank someone or acknowledge talented posts. Translated to English, it means...SWEETIE.!!!!!

Until I have more information regarding these allegations, to me Cain is innocent of sexual harassment and only guilty of cultural faux pas.

Does anyone know why Bill was called "Bubba"?

Obama's 'Sweetie': Spontaneous or Sexist?
May 16, 2008

The recent flap over Sen. Barack Obama calling a female reporter "sweetie" sparked a national dialogue over what is acceptable language between men and women in the workplace.
The moment came at a campaign stop in Detroit, when Peggy Agar, a reporter at ABC's Detroit affiliate WXYZ-TV, asked Obama this question: "Senator, how are you going to help the American autoworkers?"
"Hold on a second, sweetie. We'll hold a press avail," replied Obama, referring to a structured question and answer session with the media.
It apparently is a habit. In an earlier campaign stop, Obama said to a woman, "Sweetie, if I start with a picture I will never get out of here."
And then: "Sweetie if I start doing autographs I just won't be … I am really late."
So if one of these women thought Sweetie made then feel uncomfortable the President would be guilty of

On "The View," Whoopie Goldberg said that it wasn't such a big deal. "And what he meant to say I believe was with no disrespect, 'cause I call everyone sweetie if I don't know their name," she said.

"GMA" workplace contributor Tory Johnson said that each person has to decide if they are offended by the use of certain words, and to make it clear they are uncomfortable.
"If you don't like someone calling you sweetie, call them on it, but don't assume their intentions are bad," Johnson said.

Liberals only have this tool -- the one used on Judge Bork, Clarence Thomas and Sarah Palin -- because Republicans remain silent whenever they do it.

Call your congressman and demand that they publicly denounce the media treatment of Cain and further, point out that it's purely designed to sink a conservative front-runner and nothing else.

Did the New York Times put four reporters on the stories about Clinton and Lewinsky? Stories which happened to be true? Truth is unknown to liberal reporters (they'll challenge you on "truth" and tell you that there are many. I guess they simply prefer the truths they fabricate out of whole cloth.)
