Big Three Nets Omit Corzine's Party ID as Feds Investigate His Firm

On Tuesday, the morning shows of the Big Three networks omitted the party affiliation of Jon Corzine as they reported on the federal investigation into his brokerage firm, something that even the liberal New York Times gave in their coverage of the story. ABC's Good Morning America also failed to include Corzine's name during their news brief on the investigation.

News anchor Josh Elliott noted in a 13-second brief that "a Wall Street brokerage firm run by New Jersey's former governor is filing for bankruptcy. Regulators say some $700 million belonging to MF Global's customers is apparently missing." Apparently, the name of the Democrat's firm is newsworthy at ABC, but his name and his party ID isn't.

On NBC's Today show, Natalie Morales gave Corzine's name right away and detailed that the "the missing money forced MF Global to file for bankruptcy Monday after scuttling a deal to sell part of the company to a rival firm." But she followed her ABC colleague's lead by not revealing the former governor's political affiliation.

Betty Nguyen, CBS News Anchor; & Jon Corzine, (D), Former New Jersey Governor | NewsBusters.orgWhile ABC and NBC gave their news briefs on the investigation during the first half hour of their programs, CBS's Early Show waited over an hour to report on the story. However, the program spent the most time on it out of the three - 23 seconds - compared to 13 seconds and 18 seconds respectively for the other two networks, for a total of 54 seconds of coverage. Fill-in news anchor Betty Nguyen didn't give Corzine's party, but she stated that "the New York Times says about $700 million of customer funds had gone missing from MF Global. Regulators want to know if the firm used that money to support its own trades as the firm failed."

The Times devoted a front-page, above-the-fold article on Tuesday to the story, written by Ben Protess, Michael J. de la Merced, and Susanne Craig. Nine paragraphs in, the report noted that "when he [Corzine] arrived at MF Global — after more than a decade in politics, including serving as a Democratic United States senator from New Jersey — Mr. Corzine sought to bolster profits by increasing the number of bets the firm made using its own capital."

The transcripts of the news briefs on the investigation into Jon Corzine on Tuesday's Good Morning America on ABC, The Early Show on CBS, and the Today show on NBC:

ABC's GMA

JOSH ELLIOTT: And a Wall Street brokerage firm run by New Jersey's former governor is filing for bankruptcy. Regulators say some $700 million belonging to MF Global's customers is apparently missing.

NBC - Today

NATALIE MORALES: A brokerage firm led by former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is under federal investigation, after regulators discovered hundreds of millions of dollars in customer money missing. CBS - The Early Show

BETTY NGUYEN: A report this morning says the giant brokerage firm MF Global is under a federal investigation. It filed for bankruptcy yesterday. The firm is run by former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, and the New York Times says about $700 million of customer funds had gone missing from MF Global. Regulators want to know if the firm used that money to support its own trades as the firm failed.

A good rule of thumb is: if it doesn't scream Republican in the headline or the first two sentences, the story is about a Democrat.

I live in NJ and dispise Corzine....and this was deliberate..

Submitted by Paarl on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 6:17pm.

I come from a Red family...all the way back to the textile mills of Bialystok in the 1880s....and my maternal grandpa was a friend/ally/compatriot of Vladimir Sonofabitch illyich Lenin and we have a pic of grandpa with Lenin at the Russian 1905 Dumas....credentials establish....!!!!

Ever since Corzine entered politics and purchased his Senate seat I have listened and closely read this effers public speeches..especially in his four useless years as Governor of NJ...i dont have access now but I use to collect his public statements....and I can say without reservation that this guy is truly Wall Street revolutionary at heart and mind....he is intensely guilty about his past financial success etc....always referred to how certain people like himself gained too much unearned wealth....

He is, (from what I have learned from people who had contact with him and his wife at a skating and tennis club in Summit NJ) an intensely UNHAPPY man and has been that way for many years and to know Jon Corzine is to dislike him......

Revolutionaries are not bred or made from well adjusted happy people....they arise not from the poor put upon classes but from the ranks of discontented and maladjusted members of the middle and upper classes...AND THAT IS JON CORZINE....

I think Jon Corzine deliberately fouled MK INC/Ltd with the idea and aim of toppling the already shaky international financial system...with the hope that a widespread failure of the banks would lead to the nationalization of credit and credit allocation beyond what Dodd/Frank already does.

THIS WAS DELIBERATE AND I HOPE AN INTREPID JOURNALIST AND/OR PUBLICATION INVESTIGATES THIS ANGLE !!!

Paarl of Rhodesia...no commie here !!!

I live in New Jersey too and I despise Corzine

Submitted by djwolf12 on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 6:23pm.

Election night 2010 I got home from work and put on MSNBC and there was Chris Matthews, trashing Chris Christie and praising Corzine. I got so fuming mad that I went over to my polling place determined to vote that scumbag out of office. The volunteer at the polling place said to me..."Wow. You seem very determined to vote tonight", and I said that It is my duty and obligation to get these disgraceful corrupt politicians out of office once and for all, starting tonight.

"Wall Street brokerage firm

Submitted by Jerry on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 7:32pm.

"Wall Street brokerage firm run by New Jersey's former governor is filing for bankruptcy. Regulators say some $700 million belonging to MF Global's customers is apparently missing."

If it were a Republican, it would be reported this way, on a 24 hour loop...

"And tonight's top story... yet another Republican SCANDAL.... Conservative Wall Street brokerage firm run by New Jersey's radical right wing Republican governor is filing for bankruptcy. The controversial and staunch Republican has apparently swindled working class Americans out of over $700 million."

I despise the MSM (D).

CNN and LATimes also miss Dem label for Corzine

Submitted by Gary Hall on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 7:37pm.

I noticed earlier, as well, that on CNN's Situation Room, in which a segment was aired on MF Global's collapse, etc., that although Corzine was a prominent fixture in the piece, there was no mention of him being a Democrat.

Same for the LA Times. They've had a number of wire story pieces posted on this, and put one of their own staff writers on a piece in the print edition today - once again, no Democrat label.

No surprise here.

Wouldn't it be refreshing to see that, "Former Democrat Party powerhouse . . ."

I usually do the Google news

Submitted by gopsteve on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 8:00pm.

I usually do the Google news search with and without "Democrat" in these situations, but this is by far the most ridiculous drop

just 3 and a half percent of the 4010 stories say "democrat."

I would just love these "news" editors, broadcast and print, have to answer to this blatant bias by omission just once

Oh look, the plagiarist troll thief made a piffle post.

Submitted by The Vet on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 1:26am.

A pointless and grating worthless piffle post riddled with grammatical errors.

Hey little boy, we used periods after abbreviations when conversing with adults. (Gov.)
Hey little boy, we capitalize government office abbreviations. (Governor)
Hey little boy, we capitalize acronyms with conversing with adults. (CEO NJ)
Hey little boy, we use the ellipsis when we span a sentence over the Subject line and the Comment field. And we do not capitalize the first word in the Comment field when it is a continuation of a sentence from the Subject line.

So, was that the intent of your post, to show us how stupid you truly are? That the taxpayers wasted 12 years trying to educate you on the most basic functions of the English language? If so, you wasted another post. We already know you are stupid in addtion to being a word thief.
