CBS Reporter to Ingraham: Obama W.H. 'Screamed and Cussed at Me'

By Matthew Balan | October 04, 2011 | 19:06

CBS's Sharyl Attkisson revealed on Tuesday's "Laura Ingraham Show" the extent of the rage directed at her from the Obama administration for her reporting on the "Fast and Furious" controversy: "The DOJ woman was just yelling at me. A guy from the White House on Friday night literally screamed at me and cussed at me." Attkisson also stated that "they think I'm unfair and biased by pursuing it."

The journalist appeared on the conservative talk show host's program at the bottom of the 9 am Eastern hour to talk about her latest reporting on the growing Justice Department scandal. She highlighted on Monday's "CBS Evening News" that "new documents...show Attorney General Eric Holder was sent briefings on the controversial 'Fast and Furious' operation as far back as July 2010. That directly contradicts his [May 3, 2011] statement to Congress."]

Through this program, the federal government smuggled guns to Mexican drug cartels in order to "get a better handle on where... [the] cartels were operating," as fill-in anchor Bob Schieffer put it in his intro for Attkisson's report.

Ingraham first asked, "What exactly is the Justice Department saying to deflect criticism or concern that "Eric Holder might indeed have said something that was untrue to Congress?" The CBS correspondent led her answer with the anecdote about the yelling she had received:

SHARYL ATTKISSON: Well, in between the yelling that I received from [the] Justice Department yesterday- the spokeswoman, who would not put anything in writing. I was asking for her explanation, you know, so there would be clarity and no confusion later over what had been said. She wouldn't put anything in writing, so we talked on the phone, and she said things such as, the question Holder answered was different than the one he asked. But he phrased it, he said, you know, very explicitly, 'I probably heard about Fast and Furious for the first time over the last few weeks.'

We have evidence- the Justice Department turned over this material to Congress- I don't think it's all of it. But they turned over evidence of memorandums sent to the attorney general himself. Whether- if he wants to say he didn't read it, I'd suppose he could say he didn't read this. But as far back as July 2010, in the documents they sent, he was getting information on this program. So, he certainly heard of it sooner.

Later in the segment, the conservative radio host asked for more detail about the yelling. Attkisson named names:

Sharyl Attkisson, CBS News Correspondent | NewsBusters.orgINGRAHAM: So they were literally screaming at you?

ATTKISSON: Yes. Well, the DOJ woman was just yelling at me. A guy from the White House-

INGRAHAM: Who was it?

ATTKISSON: On Friday night literally screamed at me and cussed at me-

INGRAHAM: Who was the person? Who was the person at Justice screaming?

ATTKISSON: Eric Schultz- oh, the person screaming was [DOJ spokeswoman] Tracy Schmaler. She was yelling, not screaming-

INGRAHAM: Oh, really?

ATKISSON: And the person who screamed at me was Eric Schultz at the White House.

INGRAHAM: Hmm- I thought we were supposed to be so transparent. This is a new era of transparency. And Pelosi was draining the swamp, and the White House was going to turn a new page, and that was actually good to hear. I mean, we were like- okay, that's- we'll give them the benefit of the doubt. And then, the first time a reporter asked a serious question about, at least, a Justice Department move here, the reporter is yelled at and screamed at.

And I would imagine, Sharyl, that if- let's say, a NBC reporter had been yelled at and screamed at by Karl Rove, we would have been hearing about it for years afterward (laughs) in the Bush administration. It would be, 'Oh, those bullies over at the White House, once again, shutting down true inquiries into their goings-on behind closed doors.'

For the record, Schultz is the associate communications director at the White House and was the former head of communications for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Tracy Schmaler worked at Yahoo! as their senior director for global public affairs, and before that, for Senator Pat Leahy on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Near the end of the interview, the journalist revealed that the Obama White House even accused her of being biased:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

ATTKISSON: And I'm certainly not the one to make the case for DOJ and White House about what I'm doing wrong-

INGRAHAM: Right-

ATTKISSON: They will tell you that I'm the only reporter- as they told me- that is not reasonable. They say 'The Washington Post' is reasonable, the 'LA Times' is reasonable, 'The New York Times' is reasonable- I'm the only one who thinks this is a story, and they think I'm unfair and biased by pursuing it. And my side of the story is- and I never knew where this story was going when I talked to those whistle-blowers back in January and February- and I didn't care where it went. I'm just, sort of, digging away and going where it leads. But I'm sure they take it very personally, because it's very important- they have very important implications.

Speaking of bias, Attkisson's colleagues at NBC and ABC have punted on the "Fast and Furious" issue. Neither Big Three network have covered the controversy on the air since April and June respectively.

I certainly hope Eric Holder is forced to do the perp walk in handcuffs.

It's always the Cover-Up that does you in.

I think once they crack open the door on Holder it will lead to other abuse of power such as the decision not to prosecute the New Black Panthers.

And that will lead to the Oval Office.

I have believed that the abuse of power under Obama has exceeded any President prior and as this gets under way it may be the final reason for Obama not to seek a second term because that will be the only agenda of his second term - impeachment.

If they are going to make sure Holder serves any time at all, they will need to hurry.  I guarantee you the last thing Ear Leader will do on his last day in office in January, 2013, is issue a pardon to Holder and everyone else in his administration.  The pardons may even come the morning after the election.  After all, what are the Republicans in the House going to do - impeach him?

Watergate was junior high spy vs. spy - and the only reason it became so big was because it was Nixon - do you think it would have got the play if it was Kennedy, or some other Dem?? Hell, compared to what goes on these days - and especially as these types of activities were expanded and excaserbated by the Clintons - I'd re -phrase my comment to say that Watergate was grade-school hide and seek................

And now - with the Boy Barry REGIME - it's not even on the charts!!!

WWAAAAAAAYYYYY more of a scandal than Watergate. And that's just for starters. How many people did Nixon's Breaking and Entering kill? Could you imagine if Nixon (or Bush) had an enemies list that included over 50 % of the American electorate? Even more when it comes time to choose between Americans or foreign interests, then ALL citizens can just 'get in the back'. If Nixon or Bush had an AttackWatch. to 'inform' on other citizens? So many to choose, the man-child is an impeachment waiting to happen. I understand his Connecticut SS number doesn't pass E-Verify.
Laughingly, I hear the ATF won't allow gun sales to those that can partake of State-sanctioned Marijuana. Drug-dealing, violent gangs, on the other hand.....

Social Security numbers are associated with ZIPs now, but that only began in 1974.

As for ZIPs themselves, they didn't come into existence until 1963.  That was two years after He was found in a manger in HI.

Now, unless His Majesty The Shahinshah got His SSN AFTER 1974, there simply isn't any there, there.

I don't recall that Social Security Numbers were assigned at birth by default when Obama was born nor were they issued without requisition. My parents applied for mine when I was an adolescent. Based on my own experience, it seems unlikely that Obama was issued a SS card until well after his birth.

Was a SSN required for international travel? His schooling in Malaysia probably didn't require one. Did his schooling in America require one? By the time he worked at Baskin-Robbins, his first paycheck that would require IRS tax forms, it would have been past 1974.

stratman, that is a legit point, which I hope I addressed by pointing out that He might have not gotten one right away.  I don't know what the policy was in the early 1960s when He was delivered to earth by the angels.  Maybe Three Wise Men visited Him with a gift of a Social Security Number, frankencense and myrrh?  Or maybe His was assigned later.

I got a SSN when I was six.  Now, from what I understand, kids get them pretty much when they are born.

Unfortunately, Agnostic...

Submitted by Jer on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 8:43pm.

There have been misguided policies formulated and implemented at some level in some department of government during almost every administration in US history.  The CIA alone has over the years authored some of the most boneheaded schemes the human brain is capable of conjuring.  [Yes, I know...the agency's failures are publicized around the world while its successes languish in obscurity.]  Assorted scandals have resulted in the death of a few, others in the death of many, others in the death of no one.  Sometimes questionable or even criminal activities were known by the President and other times were even orchestrated by the President, and on still other occasions he was the last to know.

The casualties related to Fast & Furious are horrifically tragic, although it would be naive to suggest the victims would not have been targeted otherwise. Granted, that latter fact doesn't make the policy more defensible, nor does the fact that the underlying purpose and ultimate objective of the program appear to be desirable.  The staggering idiocy which permeated its execution was alone sufficient to warrant condemnation of this half-witted venture.

That said, I would prefer to wait until all of the material facts are adduced before weighing in on Obama's potential culpability or pronouncing F & F "far worse than Watergate".  And...[drum roll, please], furthering my grand tradition of "Bush Did It Tooism", the following recent disclosure may be of interest:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The federal government under the Bush administration ran an operation that allowed hundreds of guns to be transferred to suspected arms traffickers - the same tactic that congressional Republicans have criticized President Barack Obama's administration for using, two federal law enforcement officials said Tuesday. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and other Republicans have been hammering the Obama Justice Department over the practice known as "letting guns walk."

The congressional target has been Operation Fast and Furious, which was designed to track small-time gun buyers at several Phoenix-area gun shops up the chain to make cases against major weapons traffickers. In the process, federal agents lost track of many of the more than 2,000 guns linked to the operation. When Bush, a Republican, was president, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Tucson, Ariz., used a similar enforcement tactic in a program it called Operation Wide Receiver.

The fact that there were two such ATF investigations years apart in separate administrations raises the possibility that agents in still other cases may have allowed guns to "walk."

I'll be back with a link to the above shortly.

I have no problem with the wait and see attitude that you represent since I've seen the media push many scandals they wish were true just because the story is sensational or the target of the scandal makes it too good for them to pass. My true issue is with the media - not the comparative legality or severity. I believe you are old enough to remember the Iran Contra Affair - perhaps not in detail however. But the media covered the scandal with breathless anticipation of some proof that would bring down the administration - indeed they treated it like another 'Watergate' moment in journalism. When the actual proof never came the scandal was still pursued and guilt was assumed due to lack of proof of innocence in the media. BTW, not defending the scandal just pointing out that with a Republican in office it did not take ‘proof’; it did not take 'substantial supportive evidence" - it merely took a reasonable amount of innuendo.

Fast and Furious - there is a substantial amount of implied wrong doing (passed off now as incompetence), there is a substantial amount of documentation that the WH at various levels knew what was happening and the results (passed off as not being conclusive enough to report) and odd statements about ending ATF and various promotions are no longer signs of guilt but just part of normal operations.

Indeed wait for the facts but it seems the general rule in the media is innuendo is good enough for front page wall-to-wall coverage of a potential scandal of a Republican. A Democrat - when the facts eventually do come out make sure they are double checked and any potential excuses are brought forward.

Speculation based on only a few facts or suspicions easily creates a mob mentality - the media seem to be no different except they are very selective about what constitute a suspicion and it all seems to depend upon what letter appears after a political name.

Re: Cover Up

Submitted by Great Debater on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 5:41pm.

"It's always the Cover-Up that does you in."

Well said. As AG, it is already his job to place agents (think undercover federal DEA agents) in dangerous positions to thwart the bad guys. Suppose Holder had just said: "Congressman, my first briefing on F&F was provided to me in July 2010."

He could've simply then added: "My subordinates came up with this radical idea to this increasing problem, and I agreed to it. I decided I could no longer stand by and do nothing while Mexican drug lords were terrorizing and killing police, prosecutors, judges, witnesses ... and Americans. I decided that something bold had to be done ... and so I "green-lighted" F&F. That said, my heart and prayers go out to all who were harmed by this operation. I suppose you may conclude that that statement must result in my removal as AG, and/or my prosecution. If so, then so be it, though I believe that I probably would authorize it again."

What then??? Sure, there may be a few calls for his removal or even impeachment and prosecution, though I doubt any such attempt would've been successful, mostly because he at least would've been respected. But now ... he has lost respect ... he has put his boss on the defensive ... he has endangered (politically) those that work under him, and his lies got him WHAT that the truth wouldn't have to begin with? It's never wise to create your own problems.

What part of give copious numbers of weapons to known killers over an extended period of time after you know they not only killed dozens to hundreds of foreign nationals but also Americans, including a public law enforcment official, should have clued Holder and Gang into shutting down the operation and nabbing as many bad guys as possible?

This is beyond Watergate.  Beyond guns for the Contras.  They took a movie script and tried to force reality.  Reality then bit them in the ass and they failed to stop, resorting to a coverup operation sanctified by the dysfunctional Media which continues to be largely absent in reporting this vital story.

There should be no hiding from this malfeasance.  This should be investigated and prosecuted based on the evidence.  Enough with the Left's fairytale good intentions paving the road to Hell for Americans.  F&F was a bad plan made worse by doubling down and hoping for a payoff despite murder after murder.

His Political Punch blog on the subject was pretty “reasonable” and “even-handed” so I suppose Jake won’t get “yelled, screamed and cussed at" by the White House and Department of Justice.

And, of course, there’s no guarantee his story will be picked up by ABC News or GMA.

MS-13 Armed by Obama Administration

Submitted by Retired Geek on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 12:24am.

MS-13 is considered the most vicious, dangerous and deadly gang in the World.

Did you know that the Barack Administration armed MS-13 with hundreds of assault rifles and other armaments?

The Obama-Holder 'Operation Fast and Furious' makes Watergate pale in comparison.

It is beginning to look as if Eric Holder and the ATF were acting on orders from Barack Obama.

If Obama is involved in this

Submitted by Beukeboom on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 9:29am.

If Obama is involved in this mess (and I believe it's highly plausible that he is) I expect he will demand others fall on their swords for him since that is "THE CHICAGO WAY"[tm]!

Are there fractures appearing in the Liberal bulwarks?

CBS has been far more reasonable and centrist in their reporting of late. No question about it. Will others follow?

Sharyl Attkisson has attacked the Chicago mob.

Submitted by Thalpy on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 10:46am.

There are dire consequences for crossing the Chicago mob. The penalty for apostasy in Islam is death; Sharyl's apostasy may only result in her re-education or ostracism.

The Insolent Comrade

Submitted by greydawg on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 10:49am.

Let's be clear about one thing - The Emperor Obama will not tolerate any honesty from anyone in the MSM. Was Attkisson drunk or on drugs? What was she thinking to permit such a severe lack of judgement? Clearly the woman is desperately in need of a psychiatric intervention. Obama has had the MSM crooning the Messiah Chorus to him since he first appeared out of the ether, and it is unacceptable to have even one of the lapdogs step out of line. They must, and will, be severely dealt with. One of Obama's goons is probably on his way to Texas right now to get Perry's rock so it can be used to stone such insolence.

Access denied

Submitted by Model850 on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 5:00pm.

I suspect that soon Ms. Attkisson's calls to government officials will go unanswered and unreturned, and that any and all press credentials she holds for access to government buildings will be revoked.
