CBS's Steve Kroft Omits Waterboarding, Other Key Issues From Obama Interview
On Sunday's 60 Minutes, CBS's Steve Kroft failed to bring up key issues related to the killing of Osama bin Laden during an interview of President Obama, such as the enhanced interrogation of captured al Qaeda leaders which provided the first intelligence that ultimately lead to the Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan.
The journalist set the overall tone of his interview, which he conducted on Wednesday, by tossing a softball in his lead question to Obama: "Mr. President, was this the most satisfying week of your presidency?" After the chief executive gave his initial answer, Kroft followed up by asking, "Was the decision to launch this attack the most difficult decision that you've made as commander-in-chief?
Later, the correspondent waxed ecstatic about the President's full schedule as final preparations were being made for the assault on the al Qaeda leader's compound:
KROFT: After you made the decision to go ahead, you had, like, this incredible weekend where you were you surveyed the tornado damage in Alabama. You took your family to the shuttle launch and met with people down there, with [Representative] Gabby Giffords. You attended the White House [Correspondents'] Association dinner. There was a commencement address. And this was all going on. I mean, you knew what was gonna happen.
OBAMA: Yeah, yeah. The decision was made. I made the decision Thursday night, informed my team Friday morning, and then we flew off to look at the tornado damage, to go to Cape Canaveral, to make a speech, a commencement speech. And then, we had the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night. So, this was in the back of my mind all weekend.
KROFT: Just the back?
OBAMA: Middle, front-
KROFT: Was it hard keeping your focus?
OBAMA: Yes- yeah.
KROFT: Did you have to suppress the urge to tell someone? Did you wanna tell somebody? Did you wanna tell Michelle? Did you tell Michelle?
While Kroft did bring up some controversies surrounding the bin Laden killing, such as the President's decision to not release death photos of the terror leader and his burial at sea, the CBS journalist kept the questions very simple: "Did you see the pictures? What was your reaction when you saw them? Was it your decision to bury him at sea?"
Only months earlier, in November 2010, the correspondent conducted an equally soft interview of the President where he sympathetically wondered if the Democrat "sold his successes well enough" and lamented how he "lost [his] ability...to inspire and lead."

STEVE KROFT: Mr. President, was this the most satisfying week of your presidency?
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Well, it was certainly one of the most satisfying weeks, not only for my presidency, but I think for the United States since I've been President. Obviously, bin Laden had been not only a symbol of terrorism but a mass murderer who's- had eluded justice for so long and so many families who have been affected, I think, had given up hope. And for us to be able to definitively say we got the man who caused thousands of deaths here in the United States was something that I think all of us were profoundly grateful to be a part of.
KROFT: Was this- was the decision to launch this attack the most difficult decision that you've made as commander-in-chief?
OBAMA: Certainly one. You know, every time I send young men and women into a war theater, that's a tough decision, and whenever you write a letter to a family who's lost a loved one, it's sobering. This was a very difficult decision in part because the evidence that we had was not absolutely conclusive. This was circumstantial evidence that he was going to be there. Obviously, it entailed enormous risk to the guys that I sent in there. But, ultimately, I had so much confidence in the capacity of our guys to carry out the mission that I felt that the risks were outweighed by the potential benefit of us finally getting our man.
KROFT: When the CIA first brought this information to you, what was your reaction? Was there a sense of excitement? Did this look promising from the very beginning?
KROFT: When was that, when you set that plan in motion?
KROFT: How actively were you involved in that process?
KROFT: Were you surprised when they came to you with this compound right in the middle of- sort of the military center of Pakistan?
KROFT: Do you believe it was built for him?
KROFT: Do you have any idea how long he was there?
KROFT: Did he move out of that compound?
KROFT: This was your decision, whether to proceed or not, and how to proceed. What was the most difficult part of that decision?
KROFT: I mean, it's been reported that there was some resistance from advisors and planners who disagreed with the commando raid approach. Was it difficult for you to overcome that, and what level of confidence did you have?
KROFT: How much did some of the past failures, like the Iran hostage rescue attempt, how did that weigh on you? I mean-
OBAMA: I thought about that.
KROFT: Was that a factor?
KROFT: It sounds like you made a decision that you could accept failure. You didn't want failure but after looking at the 55/45 thing that you mentioned, you must have at some point concluded that the advantages outweighed the risks.
KROFT: How much of it was gut instinct? Did you have personal feelings about whether he was there?
OBAMA: The thing about gut instinct is if it works, then you think, boy, I had good instincts. (laughs) If it doesn't, then you're gonna be running back in your mind all the things that told you maybe you shouldn't have done it. Obviously, I had enough of an instinct that we could be right, that it was worth doing.

KROFT: Did you see the pictures?
KROFT: What was your reaction when you saw them?
KROFT: Why haven't you released them?
KROFT: There are people in Pakistan, for example, who say, look, this is all a lie. This is another American trick. Osama's not dead.
KROFT: Was it your decision to bury him at sea?
KROFT: When the mission was over and you walked out of the Situation Room, what did you do? What was the first thing you did?
KROFT: When you announced that bin Laden had been killed last Sunday, you said, 'Our counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan helped lead us to bin Laden and the compound where he was hiding.' Can you be more specific on that, and how much help did Pakistan actually provide in getting rid of bin Laden?
KROFT: You didn't tell anybody in the Pakistani government or the military.
OBAMA: No.
KROFT: Or their intelligence community?
OBAMA: No.
KROFT: Because you didn't trust?
OBAMA: As I said, I didn't tell most people here in the White House. I didn't tell my own family. It was that important for us to maintain operational security.
KROFT: But you were carrying out this operation in Pakistan.
OBAMA: Yeah.
KROFT: You didn't trust them?
KROFT: Right now, the location of this house, the location of the compound just raises all sorts of questions. Do you believe people in the Pakistani government? Pakistani intelligence agencies knew that bin Laden was living there?
KROFT: Do you have any sense of what they found there?
KROFT: Is this the first time that you've ever ordered someone killed?
KROFT: This was one man. This is somebody who's cast a shadow in this place, in the White House for almost a decade.

What with exploiting the Giffords shooting, blindsiding Trump, releasing that layered mock-up of a Birth Certificate, posing in the Situation Room for a picture showing the cabinet looking at a screen that had God-Knows-What, but certainly not the 25 minute blackout the W.H. pulled in during the climactic moments of the SEAL team's work.
Dude barely had time time to squeeze in 9 holes before taking credit in an announcement that was 90 minutes delayed, and still didn't get the facts correct.

That's pretty much my own take on the current style............it's a lot more 'all over the place', and discussions don't seem to just 'happen' like they would here on the old-style NB format. We could have discussions within the thread, and still have room for other statements and opinions going on around us, without trying to figure out who'w where, or when, or why..............
I think my Navy SEAL son would call it a clusterf**k...........sort of. I could call it a Chinese fire drill, but I'd probably get hammered for being politically insensitive!!!
They do, however it takes a LOT more time to find them.

The disqus has an email alert function, so you can find who is replying to you... , however no one else knows, so there you are for hours dealing with a troll all by yourself.
Only the high hourly users (addicted users,me!! ), may drop by and find a back and forth going on.
Whereas the recent comment window (rendered useless in the disqus) alerted the NB gang to the troll flack. We could all swarm over there and do some serous whacking.
I think the disqus offers some of these options, however there is a extra charge..

I remember saying that a moratorium should be put on the number of lawyers that can be produced and licensed, as a direct percentage to the population - becuase it is a self-perpetuating and self-absorbed industry, which has grown from 'cottage' status to 'mega-mansion' status, and has totally taken over the government at all levels. And the thing with this industry is that they can keep changing the laws in order to keep themselves on top.............it's very convoluted. You DON'T see the same number (by ANY margin) of lawyers in any other country, as far as I can tell.................nor are they given the same status - although I can't say that I know very many people who have much inherent respect for lawyers. Maybe they might be 'nice guys', or 'allright', or whatever.............but the whole legal business has created it's own residue, and I don't think that residue is very well received or respected, basically.
And don't get me wrong - there ARE reasons for lawyers to be a part of our society - albeit just another job, another profession, another gig - and not something that has matasticized into the insidious and over-reaching shadow that it has become anymore.

We don't have Rich Text editors in Disqus....so you can't just type the TITLE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO PRESENT, then highlight and add a hyperlink.
All you have to do is just copy and paste the link.
It's not very elegant, in fact, I find it downright ugly....because I like to have "my readers" (okay, I've been blogging for a while) have a clue about the link I am going to show them. Of course, it's possible to do this....

As a young hi-school haole I did lots of skiing, and when you can't see your hand in front of your face, because of blowing power snow, that is scary...
My scariest moment was a black-out conditions while diving on the north shore of Molokai in the winter, a huge set came in and stirred up the bottom (all black sand), instantly the view was black as a moonless midnight.
No one ever told me about black-out... lots of folk told me about about white-out. I'm sure in all your years of duck-diving views things like that sure gave you lots to think about over on the years..

I actually got hired a few years ago to do some ADA ramps in front of some various shops at Princeville. But there used to be this guy around here - in a wheelchair - who would go around the island looking to make trouble - I think he had some gig going with some ADA lawyers or something, because he made a LOT of places do this. And I think everything was fine before that - even with the wheelchair people!!! I hear there is some lady doing it now.................jeez, you'd think that people would have something better to do with their time.
I play music at KORE for disabled people - and they all seem very nice and happy to be enjoying something like that. Obviously, they are NOT the ones snooping around, looking to cause some problems.

Ahhhh.........the Disques thing Sucques, as far as I can tell. I'm a lightweight when it comes to drinking..........which could come as a surprise, considering that I have been a rebel, a rock'n'roller', a surfer, a construction worker, and a lover of women for my whole life!!! But with vodka, I found something that is ''drinkable' for a candy-ass non-macho man like myself!!! Especailly if it is disguised in some kind of tasty partner. So I have found a 'designer' black cherry 'soda' - you know, a 'health-food' drink - hahahahahahaha!!! And it is carbonated, and has a good taste, and it goes very well with the vodka. I started out on cranberry juice, but the stock juice was too sugary and sweet and wimpy for me, so I experimented with a number of other mixers before I found this particular brand. But I think that the 'real' drinkers would call it a 'chick drink'............although I'm not shy about making it a 'double'!!!! Hahahaha!!!
You're probably more of a 'man' than I am, when it comes to these things..........and that's OK with me. I'm a big believer in 'whatever works', and 'live and let live'......................but when somebody want's to try and impose their BS on the ol' Killa......................KABOOM!!! But I've played MANY New Year's Eve gigs when I was in bands, so I know the scoop - plus, I think there was surf the next day, and I could catch some fairly uncrowded conditions in the morning, while a lot of people were recovering from the New Year's Eve partying!!!

I know a lady over here who was an extra in Blue Hawaii - when some of it was filmed over here. Actually, a LOT of movies have been filmed here, when you start looking at the stats. Anyway, she was a young teenager, and she got to meet Elvis while she was on the set, and I swear to Allah (blessed be his name) that this lady STILL has a crush on the ol' Pelvis!!! She used to work at the bank, and she had more photos of Elvis around her window than her kids!!! Top-secret remember no flight records... Ahhh DC-8 .... My only flight on a DC-8 was a flight to Samoa in one of those, creaky old suckers.
Nothing to worry about, sez the Captain on the PA system..what you just saw out of the right side of the aircraft was 30 feet of incomplete combustion.
Me in my window seat in row "A" I saw 30 feet of FLAMES exiting the engine, the flame colored image reflecting through all the windows the opposite cabin walls, caused a bit of a squealing panic from the passengers..
Not to be upstaged, by that flame-fun... 5 hours later, the flight attendants wondered the aisles squeezing and emptying bug canisters on all the passengers. Ahh travel.

Well, somehow, the whole thing with the 'shaka' got totally blown up, to where you see athletes and 'personalities' and anybody else - from Albania to Zimbabwe - doing the damn thing. The locals stopped doing it allready!!! And there used to be a mayor in Honolulu named Frank Fasi (well, the guy was basically a professional politician in Asia/Hawaii, because he was always 'something') who took the whole thing away from being subtle and 'local' by holding his hand up over his head and showing the 'shaka' sign to everybody - like it was some damn gold medal or something..........................and it's all been downhill since then.

Actually, many many moons ago - back in the middle area of the last century - when the shaka sign was displayed - on the downlow - and there was a little tip of the head and an eyebrow raised - there also might have been a low 'ee-zay, brah' uttered - which basically translates to 'easy, brother'.................this is just a little vignette of local culture. But, like I said, I can turn on the TV and be watching some football game in Alabama, and the camera will pan the stands, and somebody WILL be flashing the shaka sign as big as they can.
I'm sure your parents overdid it!!! Oh, 'hang loose' has been around a long time too, along with 'f**king haole', which I always thought was one word!!! The day I arrived in Hawaii, as a schoolboy, I swam out to where a bunch of local kids were riding some waves, and I was immediatly given the 'f**king haole, what you doing here' treatment - I think they were amazed that some white boy would enter their zone. Ah My Dad, he worked for Roy Marquardt , testing ram jets in the 40's before I was born, in fact he transported one of those TOP SECRET engines, in the back of the station wagon to Fantana for testing at Kaiser Steel (needed lots of compressed air to operate) once running the decibels were so high Kaiser blamed Marquardt of cracking one of their chimneys.... From what I could find out there was a second fire that has been extinguished, There was no mention of arson. The original fire is reported to be under control and is under investigation.

Today is Da Killa's burfday, and I've reached some 'magical age' where I'm supposed to be wakin' (Obamaspeak) up and smellin' the coffee, and ridin' the senior bus to some convenience store to use my discount on useless knick-knacks, and sittin' on a park bench with other over-the-hill types, reminiscing about old times while ooglin' the young girls....................or maybe kickin' back in a smokin' jacket on the couch, puffin' on a pipe and readin' the newspaper...............or walkin' to the senior center to do some morning exercises.................or maybe even courtin' a li'l ol' blue-haired darling who wears an over-sized and under-styled flannel dress, with nylons and a pair of those black, boxy shoes.........................there are just so many choices when you have all that time on your hands.
BUT!!!! Da Killa is BAAAAAD............and he's ISLANDWIDE and NATIONWIDE.................and he has a government to support, so I will be going to my jobsite as soon and I finish my coffee and get dressed. But I might have a refreshing swim after work, and I can guaran-damn-tee that if there was any surf today (we don't get much surf out here in the summertime), I would play hooky from work and have two sessions........................plus, the scenery at the beach is always very nice, in many different ways!!!!
And this evening, while enjoying a couple of black cherry/vodka drinks, I'll probably be workin' on a couple of new tunes to try out at the next KORE session..................I'm tryin' to come up with some kind of version of the Al Green classic 'Here I Am, Baby, Come and Get Me' (or whatever it's called).............and I had a brainstorm the other day at work about learnin' that Dionne Warwick classic 'Walk On By'....................so I might sit right down and figure that one out, along with some others.

I'll tell ya', MD - the 'uptight conservative' types rankle my okole pretty bad too, although in a different way than the whacked out loony libs, because while I may agree with a lot of their thought process' and ideas and opinions, I just can't take their narrow-minded and self-righteous viewpoint - it's not much different than being a loony lib in that regard.
My Mom always told me 'live and let live'..................just as long as somebody else's 'live' didn't have a negative impact our your own 'live' - she knew that people were different, and there isn't much we can do about it. Somehow, we've just got to take peole at face value, until proven otherwise. So I've tried to 'live' like that myself, and be responsible, dependable, reliable, productive, and try to maintain some level of respectablity. But, as you know, if and when somebody else's version of 'live' enters my 'turf' in a negative way, it's toilet-time, and I'm doin' (Obamaspeak) the flushin'!!!!

Paul Ryan is a smart and articulate guy who actually knows what he's talking about, when he opens his mouth - which is polar opposite to Boy Baraka and Joe Plugs Bite-Me. But he is also a white guy who has refuted and obliterated Boy Baraka on every occassion that they have had any interaction, and I remember when that clueless and classless Barry Soetoro went out of his way to embarrass Ryan - in a venue that he knew Ryan couldn't counteract.................which is typical of that black and white and RED all over, with a big yellow streak, Kenyan Kommie Kreep. I think it's a safe bet to say that Obama hates Ryan.
