ABC, CBS Inaccurately Report Pope's Condom Remarks as 'Change in Policy'

By Matthew Balan | November 24, 2010 | 14:58

On Tuesday evening, ABC and CBS furthered the mainstream media's largely inaccurate reporting on Pope Benedict XVI's recent remarks on the morality of condom use. While the pontiff stated that condoms are "not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection," World News anchor Diane Sawyer stated that "the Pope shifts his rules on condom use." Evening News anchor Katie Couric labeled Benedict XVI's comment a "historic statement," and trumpeted how supposedly, "Pope Benedict says, for the first time, that condoms are okay to protect against HIV and other diseases."

Sawyer included her misleading "Pope shifts his rules on condom use" phrase as she teased the lead stories at the beginning of World News. Sixteen minutes into the half hour program, the ABC anchor introduced correspondent Dan Harris's report, who began by giving a false impression of Benedict's remarks during an interview published in book form given by German journalist Peter Seewald. An on-screen graphic proclaimed, "A Change in Policy:"

HARRIS: In chapter 11 of 'Light of the World,' a new book based on interviews with Pope Benedict, the pontiff says condom use by people, like male prostitutes, is a lesser evil, if it would protect their partners from getting a deadly infection like AIDS. Today, his spokesman said he had personally asked the Pope if he meant just men, and the Pope told him, no, he meant women, too, even if it means preventing a possible pregnancy.

Diane Sawyer, ABC Anchor; & file photo of Pope Benedict XVI | NewsBusters.orgActually, the Bishop of Rome didn't say anything about condoms being a "lesser evil" at all. He stated that "there may be a basis in the case of some individuals, as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this [using a condom] can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed and that one cannot do whatever one wants. But it is not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection. That can really lie only in a humanization of sexuality" (fuller excerpt from the interview available here). In other words, the only foolproof way of preventing HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases is to follow the Church's teachings on sexuality and keep sexual intercourse inside the context of marriage.

As for papal spokesman Father Federico Lombardi's remarks on the issue, which he gave during a Tuesday press conference at the Vatican, the Catholic News Agency reported that 'he told the press conference that while the Pope had used the example of a male prostitute using condoms, the point could apply to men, women, and even transsexuals engaged in prostitution. 'Whether a man or a woman or a transsexual does this, we’re at the same point,' Fr. Lombardi said. 'The point is the first step toward responsibility, to avoid posing a grave risk to another person.'" Father Lombardi was trying to echo what the Pope said earlier in the interview, though CNA also quoted from leading U.S. Catholic theologian Dr. John Haas, who pointed out that Fr. Lombardi may have inadvertently caused further confusion with his answer.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

During his report, Harris played three sound bites from an interview of Father James Martin of America magazine, who was widely criticized for his spouting of liberal talking points during a May 2009 panel discussion on CNN. Even Father Martin gave a false impression of the Pope's remarks:

FATHER JIM MARTIN, EDITOR, AMERICA CATHOLIC WEEKLY: This is a big deal, because it's the first time the Vatican has talked about condoms in a positive way as a way to prevent AIDS....

HARRIS (on-camera): For people who are out on the front lines right now- Catholic relief workers working with AIDS victims, how do you think they view this?

MARTIN: I think this is a lifeline to them- I think, because for many years, they have been arguing that this is a way to prevent death.

HARRIS: The Vatican's statement today leaves some serious open questions. For example, if it's okay to use a condom to prevent the transmission of a life-threatening disease, where do you draw the line when it comes to serious, but non-life-threatening diseases like- say, syphilis?

HARRIS (voice-over): We reached out to the Vatican and to the U.S. bishops today and got no response.

HARRIS (on-camera): If the Church hierarchy isn't talking, how does your average Catholic know what to do if he or she has- say, gonorrhea or hepatitis? Is it moral to wear a condom in that case?

MARTIN: Good question.

By contrast, the ABC correspondent only played one clip from an orthodox Catholic. Father Joseph Fessio, who is the American publisher for Pope Benedict's books, correctly pointed out that "he's [the Pope is] definitely not saying that condoms are permitted or justified or approved."

Katie Couric, CBS Anchor; and file photo of Pope Benedict XVI | NewsBusters.ogOn Evening News, Couric emulated CNN's Kyra Phillips misleading take on the papal interview during her introduction for correspondent Elaine Quijano's report, which ran 10 minutes into the program: "Pope Benedict says, for the first time, that condoms are okay to protect against HIV and other diseases. That historic statement is in a new book released today, as the UN announced increased condom use has led to a 20% drop in new HIV infections worldwide over the past decade." Quijano did actually read a quote from the interview, something ABC's Harris didn't do during his report: "In the book 'Light of the World,' Pope Benedict says: 'In the case of some individuals, this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility.'"

NBC actually stands apart from ABC and CBS's misconduct in their misleading reporting on Benedict's remarks. On Monday's Today show, correspondent Kerry Sanders accurately covered the pontiff's answers and read fuller excerpts from the interview, along with playing two clips from an interview with Father Fessio.

Il Papa Keeps Putting His Gucci Shoe in His Mouth

Submitted by Henry Clay on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 5:17pm.

May I be the first to point out that Il Papa keeps digging himself into a hole.  Not only has the Pope come out in favor of using condoms; he is now accepting transgenders as a natural form of God’s image.  To quote his Papal spokesman:

“…the Pope had used the example of a male prostitute using condoms, the point could apply to men, women, and even transsexuals engaged in prostitution. 'Whether a man or a woman or a transsexual does this, we’re at the same point…”

The Pope was never a Nazi.

Submitted by Radical1979 on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 6:57pm.

The Pope was never a Nazi.  He was forced to enter the Hitler youth group, as required by law.

Following his 14th birthday in 1941, Ratzinger was conscripted into the Hitler Youth — as membership was required by law for all 14-year old German boys after December 1939[9] — but was an unenthusiastic member who refused to attend meetings.[10] His father was an enemy of Nazism, believing it conflicted with the Catholic faith. In 1941, one of Ratzinger's cousins, a 14-year-old boy with Down syndrome, was taken away by the Nazi regime and killed during the Aktion T4 campaign of Nazi eugenics.[11] In 1943, while still in seminary, he was drafted into the German anti-aircraft corps as Luftwaffenhelfer.[10] Ratzinger then trained in the German infantry, but a subsequent illness precluded him from the usual rigours of military duty. As the Allied front drew closer to his post in 1945, he deserted back to his family's home in Traunstein after his unit had ceased to exist, just as American troops established their headquarters in the Ratzinger household. As a German soldier, he was put in a POW camp but was released a few months later at the end of the war in the summer of 1945. He reentered the seminary, along with his brother Georg, in November of that year.

You do know what the meaning of the word conscripted, right? The Pope at 14 years old was FORCED to join the Hitler Youth like all youth in Germnay. Open up a dictionary and learn something.

He then had the COURAGE, as a young teenager, to leave this horrific armed forces knowing full well that if he were ever caught he would be shot on the spot for being a deserter!

Leave it up to you to claim that it is cowardess for a young teenager to leave an armed forces whose whole purpose was to terrorize the world.

Henry Clay, why do you support the Nazis? why would you claim that only a coward would leave Nazi Germany's armed forces?

who do you think you are convicing with your lies, half-truths and right out hatred for the Roman Catholic Church?

His behavior is very dispicable and no doubt that if it was us acting towards him with such hatred and disgrace he would be crying and whinning and demanding an apology.

Sir, certainly the media were not the ones who broached this subject?  The Pope himself was the one who brought up the use of condoms for prostitutes… but then back peddled and said married couples were not allowed to have protected sex.  He then equates men and women with transsexuals.  Now, if I remembered right… I thought man was made in God’s image?  Well, certainly if one was to be a transsexual would one not be denying what God created you as?  The media did not put any words in the Pope's mouth; they simply quoted him and gave the Vatican numerous attempts to clarify the Pope’s message.  Do not attempt to use the media as a scape-goat for what the Harlot of Rome has said.

Friend I would have to disagree with you assumption.  Firstly, I proved the other day that I am the resident expert on religion.  I hate to brag but my arguments took the day.  Secondly, why was what I said uncalled for?  Is not the Pope just a man?  Surely, you would not consider him anything else.  With that being said, I have nothing against Catholics, if they seek to worship with pagan rituals then, by all means, go right ahead.

I was once a Catholic, taught by Jesuits from primary school through University, I know their hypocrisy better than most; and as a Christian I get a little annoyed at the fact that the Pope likes to portray himself as the universal spokesman of Christianity.  Sorry if I offend; but when I see someone trying to get rich off of religion I will call them out on it.  That goes for the Joel Osteens (sic?) and Pat Robertsons too.

Henry Clay, I am sorry, but

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 9:37pm.

Henry Clay,

I am sorry, but you are beyond ridiculous and your complete ignorance of the Roman Catholic Church is seen through and through with your post.

The Pope does NOT consider himself the universal spokesman of Christianity. The Holy Spirit, God speaks through him and he is infallible on matters ONLY related to Faith. God, Jesus Christ made the Pope infallible it is God who considers him to be as such, not the Pope.

As a Roman Catholic I know the Pope is merely a human being capable of committing the same horrific sins that you and I are capable of committing.

Pagan rituals? Are you serious? LOL You an expert on religion?! are you serious?! LOL

The Pope attempting to get rich off religion? Oh Henry Clay, do yourself a favor and shut-up. If you were the expert that you claim to be, you wouldn't be saying such ridiculous, poorly informed propaganda about the Church and the Pope which have been said, by the way, for centuries by far more intelligent and better learned men than you. Of course, they were as wrong as you are.

Also, your argument, as you presented above is based on a fallacy, the fallacy of appealing to authority to discredit the message, the TRUTH that the Roman Catholic Church teaches. While there are certainly hypocrites in the RCC, just like in any other religion and just like among Atheist, it doesn't mean that the RCC doesn't teach the Truth.

Henry Clay, believe me, you aren't as smart or as knowledgeable as you believe yourself to be. A bit of humility on your part would go a long way.

Henry Clay,

Are you serious? Can you please show us all where you presented a well thought out, backed up, factually based argument against the POpe and the Roman Catholic Church? I guess in your book calling the Pope a harlot equates to an intellecutal and sound argument against the Pope and the RCC.

when you present a sound argument, backed up with facts and without insults, I will have ZERO problem answering with my ideas, facts and with the Bible as my authority.

I have no problem with anyone questioning the authority of the Pope. That is FAR from the problem, Mr. Clay. I have sparred with many an NBer who has questioned the Pope's infallibility. However,  you calling the Pope a harlot is hardly intellectual. It is vile, disgusting and dispicable.

If you apologize for calling the Pope a harlot, I have zero problem debating you and having a nice and deep intellectual exchange about the Pope, the Roman Catholic Church, etc. If you don't, I hope you get banned and NEVER allowed to come back on NB.

and stop playing the victim. You are the one who started with the horrific and pathetic insults against my religion, against my Pope. If you want respect and to be taken seriously, disagree, but disagree with respect.

Henry Clay,

So, still no intellectual, factually based argument by you against the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. Just vile and hateful name calling by you.

You need to try a lot harder.

when you can't beat the Church and Catholics with facts all you have left is name calling Mr. Clay.

Don't confuse me with who you are, Mr. Clay. The only one here displaying zealotry against or for something is you. You are the one who so hatefully called the Pope a harlot and you aren't man enough to apologize for this digusting name calling.

You haven't presented an argument of any kind all you have done is thrown ad hominems against the Catholic Church, Catholics and the Pope. I pity individuals like you who consider name calling intellectual exchange of ideas.

As I told you, Mr. Clay, you are quite an intellectual in your head, no where else. HAHA!

Why are you then, parrot, spewing out a disgusting and vile attack on the Pope which was coined by another hater of the Roman Catholic Church? So much for your ability to think on your own. Typical of a hater, attacking others and claiming that others do what they do.

Radical1979,

this guy Henry Clay is something else. The man is an intellectual only in his head.

I do find it amusging though that he considers lying about what the Pope said and did not say and calling the Pope a harlot is, according to this wacko, laying out a well thought argument who no one has been able to refute. LOL

I especially enjoyed how he attempted to play the victimhood card when he was called on his vile and disgusting attack and insults.

he makes fun of Catholics because supposedly we have priests telling us what the Bible means, yet he us runnign around spewing centuries old arguments agains the Pope, Church and Catholics he throws out insults against the Pope which was used long before Henry Clay the clown was born, but it is us Catholics who need priests to tell us how to think. HAHA!!!

I have seen sad jokes in my years on NB, but Clay boy takes the cake.

If you cannot tell the difference between Catholicism and a "religion" founded by a lying, murdering cave-dweller, which hasn't matured despite its 14 centuries of existence, it really raises serious questions about your intelligence.

Now that is lie and I am calling you out on that.  No one has debunked anything. I saw your links and the Vatican essentially blames the Protestants for the violence in Northern Ireland.  The Church themselves are the ones with blood on their hands because of their involvement in the IRA.  Northern Ireland and Ireland would have been united and free a long time ago.  In fact, right after the American Revolution a group of Protestants and Catholics joined together and formed the United Irishmen under the same principals as the Americans Patriots, yet the Catholic Church undermined this group because they wanted no state religion.

Atheists, Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists, Catholics have been involved in carrying out persecutions, mass murders. Why do you go after the Roman Catholic Church and not atheist and not Protestans and not Muslims and not Buddhists and not etc, etc, etc.

In fact atheist and secular governments have been involved in many more mass murders and persecutions than any religion. The 20th century belonged to the atheist and secularist. The USSR, China along are responsible for the death of over 100 million human beings. Where is your outrage?

Protestants? shall we talk about the persecution and mass murder of Catholics in England and other Protestant nations?

As I said, your argument is based on a fallcy, the fallacy of appealing to authority. If you do not know what this is I encourage you to learned it, study it before you continue putting your foot in your mouth.

The Roman Catholic Church, the Popes have come out and spoken publicly against the IRA. In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI vehmently and with all of his Papal authority condemned the attacks carried out by individuals who claimed to be IRA members against policemen who were murdered.  I put links to these fact. All you have proven is that you believe yourself to be this great debater when you have only proven to be someone who loves to run away when the kitchen gets a bit too hot for your taste.

You can mention pediphile priests, what does have to do with Catholics and the Church? Of course, do not forget to mention pedophile atheists, protestants, jews, buddhist, public school teachers, politicians, policemen, judges, NAMBLA, ACLU members, etc, etc, etc.

Your arguments are shallow, they are age old arguments against the Roman Catholic Church.

he is putting forward arguments against Pope Pius XII which have been thoroughly debunked and proven to be lies.

I am 100% sure that Henry Clay is clueless about the fact that the attacks against Pope Pius XII started in the 1960s. Before the 60s, all the writings and articles about him prove that he was FAR from a Nazi collaborator. Golda Meir not only praised this Pope, but gave him a medal for everything he did to save the Jews.

the Vatican during WWII was full of Jews hiding for the Nazis. Hundreds of Thousands of Jews were saved thanks to this Pope's actions.

He proved his immense ignorance when he called me nuts when I informed him that the Nazis had exploited and created a pedophile scandal. The poor fool is clueless.

He is full of hatred against the Roman catholic Church and is far from being interested in finding out the truth. All he wants is to swim in his hatred for the Church. He is dishonest, very hateful and to top it all off, he is poorly inform.

Care to explain why Golda Meir not only praised, but gave Pope Pius XII the highest medal that could have been given to an Israeli citizen at the time for saving the largest amount of Jews?

I have heared and read the slanders and lies about those who hate Pope Pius XII for years. I encounter these lies first in college and later. These are pure and utter lies which have been thoroughly debunked. Only the Catholic haters still claim that Pope Pius XII didn't do enough or was some how involved with the Nazis.

Since you did such in depth research, I am sure you have seen the interview he did with The BBC as well as several other interviews over the years. He may have been a 14 yr old at the time but he has admitted that he has used his knowledge of those experiences and incorporated them in his business dealings. He has no guilt and no regrets. He has used lies, propaganda, bought and paid news outlets to spread his lies for his own enrichment. Through his efforts, learned from the nazi, he has destroyed lives and the economies of 4 different countries. He has admitted that his next objective is to completely change America from a free enterprise system to marxist/socialist society. All these  efforts, of course, will leave him even richer than before.

Call him a nazi or not, this man is messianic, revels in his power becoming godlike and therefore justified in anything he does. All this he readily admits in every interview he has done. This same man has decided his 5th trophy wll be the destruction of America as we know it.

Now, please continue in your placid arguments in defense of your new client.

Jer, WEll, Mr. Soros does

Submitted by Liberallies on Thu, 11/25/2010 - 1:24am.

Jer,

WEll, Mr. Soros does admit to helping confiscate Jewish property. Granted, he was merely 14 years old and in a way he had to do it to safe his own skin, but he collaborated. How morally responsible is he for doing so at 14, only God knows.

The right thing to have done, as the Pope did at the same age, is the run away, leave, even if your life is in danger.

Morality, doing what is moral take presedence over our very own life. Of course, a lot easiser done than said. I have always asked myself what I would do if as a Catholic I was given the choice of death or denying Jesus Christ. I tell myself that I hope whole heartly that I would choose death, but one never knows until one is put in that position.

I give Mr. Soros the benefit of the doubt, only God knows how culpable he is.

Submitted by Liberallies on Sat, 11/27/2010 - 1:41pm.

Cool Arrow,

Sorry, your comment is as out of line as that of Henry Clay! Some idiot tries to make a Saint out of Pope Pius XII? You just called the Pope and many a Catholic an idiot.

Your hate for the Church and Pope doesn't allow you to know the truth about Pope Pius XII, instead you believe the false accusations against Pope Pius XII.

Do a little reading beyond the stuff that helps you feel comfortable with your anti-Catholic beliefs.

Of course, what can be expected from an individual whose anti-Catholic beliefs align well with NARAL, NOW, ACLU, Masons, Feminazis (as Rush calls them).

Pope Pius XII was a hero. He saved more Jews from the hands of the Nazis than any other person or organization. The Vatican was swarming with Jews during WWII which the Roman Catholic Church, do to the orders that Pope Pius XII gave, were saved from the Nazis. This is just one thing out of many that he did to save countless upon countless of Jews.

Maybe you can call Golda Meir and idiot for asserting the FACT, the HISTORICAL FACT, that Pope Pius XII saved the lives of countless of Jews. Why did she give Pope Pius XII the highest medal of honor that could be given to an Israeli? and why did she give him this honor?

As always, Cool Arrow, when i t comes to the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope you display immense ignorance and great bias, Cool Arrow.

Only God can and will judge our souls, The Roman Catholic Church only canonizes, declares a saint, individuals who have been thoroughly investigated. The Roman Catholic Church inspired by the Holy Spirit, who is God, declares saints. It is neither the Church nor the Pope that declares someone a saint, it is God using the Church and the Pope as His instruments Who declares someone a saint. Of course there many other individuals who are saints. Saints in Roman Catholic Church language means anyone and everyone who has reached Heaven. God, through the Roman Catholic Church, allows us to know the name of some of these individuals already in Heaven so we can follow their example and reach Heaven like they have.

Or is it, Cool Arrow, that only you Protestants can be individually inspired by the Holy Spirit?

that's always peplexed me about Protestants, they always claim that we are all inspired by the Holy Spirit. Yet, Protestants refuse to acknowledge that the Pope is inspired by the Holy Spirit. So, according to individuals like Cool Arrow, everyone that reads the Bible, but the Pope, is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Here is another one to throw out for Cool Arrow to answer. A two year old dies. The two year old never declared and believed that Jesus Christ was his/her Lord and Saviour, what happens to this two year old? Can she/he be saved?

How about this one, Cool Arrow, can you please point out where in the Bible we can find the passage(s) that tell us that only the Bible is the authority? Where in the Bible can we find Sola Scriptura? if only the Bible is to be taken as the auhtority of God, surely we can find THE Sola Scriptura commadment in the Bible.

By the way, Cool Arrow, you have never answers...If Sola Scriptura, the Bible is the only authority, how could St. Paul, St. Peter and the rest of the early Christians preach the Word of God if they did not have the Bible? If it is Scripture alone and the Bible was not written until the 3rd century or so, how can St. Paul, St. Peter and early Christians before the Bible claim, without having Scripture, the Bible, that they were teaching the Word of God?

Logic, reasong and facts have never been on your side Cool Arrow when it comes to Christianity, The Bible, the Roman Catholic Church.

Don't worry, as always, I don't expect you to have the intellectual honesty and intellectual curiosity to answer my questions. You always slime yourself out of answering questions that put your beliefs in a tough spot.

"Soros was not a Nazi," No,

Submitted by NL207 on Thu, 11/25/2010 - 1:35am.

"Soros was not a Nazi,"

No, of course not!.  He was only a Nazi Collaborator ....   I am certain he profited personally from his role in Nazi atrocities.   As a teenager, he has admitted to helping the Nazis confiscate property from Jews and other gas chamber bait.   Do you seriously believe that the collaborators who helped the Nazis confiscate this property received no material rewards or remuneration for having done so?   If you do, then naivete, thy name is Jer.

I suppose the remuneration was getting to live, which in Soros' case has evidently been worth billions of dollars.

Wishful, perhaps even

Submitted by NL207 on Thu, 11/25/2010 - 9:18pm.

Wishful, perhaps even delusional thinking.   You don't have anymore more idea about why Soros collaborated than any of the rest of us, yet you are SO ready to excuse Soros.   Would you be so generous to John Demjanjuk?  At least Demjanjuk as never confessed to helping the Nazis do anything.

In general, collaborators didn't need threatening to cooperate with the Nazis  ...  they participated willingly and all of them got something of personal value out of it, though  their payment was not always any more money than a trooper's pay in the Allgemeine SS.

I'd love to know the truth about why Soros collaborated.   Wouldn't it be delicious if he proved to be an unindicted war criminal?  Because he was only 14 and 15 at the time, he may have been excused.  I do not know if any underage persons were held accountable after the war, even by the Soviets in whose jurisdiction Soros fell.  It would be even more delicious to learn that Soros' original nestegg was Nazi plunder and that the left in this country is being funded in part by the last Nazi fortune.  Truth is a scarce commodity amongst the left.

Dave,

It really is kind of sad when you think about it. This poor guy is probably sitting alone in a small squalid room and only wants some attention, even if it's negative. So, he comes here, makes the most provocative comments he can devise and then revels in the abuse he gets in return - well, at least it's attention. He can't go on Kos or some site similar, because his ugly remarks wouldn't draw a second glance in those liberal swamps. I guess what I'm saying is that Henry Clay (even his grandiose screen name shows his sad self deluded image) is more to be pitied than censured.

Let's make the 2012 campaign: "The War on Error"
