NBC's O'Donnell: Palin 'Rips the Heart Out of Her Opponents' in New Book

By Matthew Balan | November 23, 2010 | 16:44

Matthew Balan's picture

NBC correspondent Norah O'Donnell hyped Sarah Palin's criticism of her liberal opponents on Tuesday's Today show, stating that the former governor "rips the heart out of some of her opponents" in her new book. O'Donnell stated that Palin, "in very personal terms, also questions the President's [Obama's] patriotism, concluding he has 'a stark lack of faith in the American people.'"

The correspondent covered "America By Heart," the Republican's second book, for the second straight day. Anchor Matt Lauer introduced her report, which began 40 minutes into the 7 pm Eastern hour, by immediately noting Palin's attacks on Mr. Obama: "Sarah Palin's much-anticipated new book hits stores today. NBC News received an advanced copy last night, and the former Alaska governor is not holding back when it comes to President Obama." O'Donnell picked up where he left off: "Well, you know, her new book is called 'America By Heart.' It's full of what she calls 'reflections on faith, family and flag.' But with all the attacks on President Obama and others, some say it could be a handbook for her for a 2012 campaign."

After noting Palin's recent visibility due to her daughter Bristol's run on Dancing With the Stars and her TLC series, the NBC correspondent turned her attention on the Tea Party favorite's attacks on liberals: "Palin, it seems, is everywhere, plugging her book and settling some old scores." She continued with her lurid play on the title of the former Alaska governor's book, and read excerpts from it where Palin criticized Obama and Hillary Clinton:

Norah O'Donnell, NBC News Correspondent | NewsBusters.orgO'DONNELL: Palin's book, 'America by Heart,' highlights some of her heroes, like Ronald Reagan, but it also rips the heart out of some of her opponents.

PALIN (from 2010 Tea Party Nation convention): How's that 'hopey-changey' stuff working out for you?

O'DONNELL: Palin says as hard as she worked to beat Mr. Obama in 2008, when he was elected- quote, 'I shared the feeling of almost desperate hope that many other Americans felt. Like them, like you, I love my country and want it to succeed. But a new morning in America hasn't broken over the Capitol dome.' In very personal terms, she also questions the President's patriotism, concluding he has 'a stark lack of faith in the American people.'

Some say the book offers a blueprint, clues on how she would attack Obama if she runs in 2012.

JAY NEWTON-SMALL, TIME MAGAZINE: Certainly, this book has all kinds of dog whistles for the base about what her messaging would be if she ran for president.

O'DONNELL: On Obama's signature legislative achievement, Palin writes, 'We don't consider the health care vote a done deal, not by a long shot. Instead it was a clarion call, a spur to action.' Palin also attacks Hillary Clinton, in what she calls her 'bra burning militancy' for this comment made in 1992, when Bill Clinton first ran for president.

HILLARY CLINTON: I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession-

O'DONNELL: Palin says, 'Some of us like to bake cookies. Some of us also think we can do that and still have successful careers.'

Near the end of her report, O'Donnell turned to a New York Times reporter Robert Draper, who quite predictability questioned the Republican's suitability to be president:

O'DONNELL: All of the buzz and controversy is likely to produce a bestseller, but will it help show that Palin is qualified for the presidency?

ROBERT DRAPER: Going negative definitely will help spur sales, but voters want to see someone who can be soothing, who can project optimism, and who can seem like an executive, rather than someone who takes a swing at anyone who offends them.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

On Monday's Today, the NBC correspondent joined her colleagues John Berman on ABC's Good Morning America and CBS's Bill Plante on The Early Show in highlighting former First Lady Barbara Bush's opposition to Palin. She also noted how "even the conservative magazine, The Weekly Standard, is going negative on Palin. The article says Palin's show 'has secured her a spot in the reality TV Star pantheon. And good for Palin, though there's no compelling reason to suggest the rest of us should tag along behind.'"

A week earlier, on November 15, O'Donnell played up a recent Gallup poll which found that "more than half of Americans, 52 percent view her negatively, making her the most divisive of all of the potential candidates in the 2012 Republican field."

So when Obama said "Americans are basically a decent people, who sometimes listen to the wrong talk radio or cable chatter" or when he professed that we tend "to cling to our guns and religion" when times are tough, he was being patriotic and SHOWING HIS GREAT FAITH IN US?

My bad, I misunderstood as he is so brilliant.

Anyone else have any fabulous quotes from Sotero where he showed his faith in us and great patriotism?

When he bows to the world he shows strength also I guess?

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 11/23/2010 - 10:08pm.

Yeah, that's the interview I assumed killa had in mind and about which I had previously read the transcript.  I think we need to avoid the rabid anti-Obama biases of the WorldNetDaily and Rush and stick to the actual words spoken by Obama.  At no point did he "rip" the Constitution or assert or even imply it is flawed.  He simply recognized the structural realities of the instrument as such were designed by the Founding Fathers and interpreted by generations of Supreme Court Justices--including those comprising the Warren Court--that defined and established limitations on what could be achieved through court action, and that the reliance on the latter by those seeking redistributive societal or economic solutions had been misplaced and misguided.  To the extent those goals were achievable, a more appropriate avenue would lie with the legislatures and not the judiciary.

An acknowledgement of the negative contraints in the Constitution is a far cry from attacking it as a defective document.  That accusation by Obama's critics was more a product of political antipathy toward the president than a fair analysis of his remarks.

Jer, while I will agree that

Submitted by Agnostic on Tue, 11/23/2010 - 10:42pm.

Jer, while I will agree that too much has been read into President Obama's statements there are some very disturbing messages for people who believe that freedom involves freedom from government restraints.

Speaking of the government pushing rights Obama made the comment, "...to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people", and while the sentiment is correct the truth is that the dispossessed people always had those rights but they were illegally negated in several fashions.  By creating stating that the government can grant rights outside of those acknowledged in the Constitution you start down the road of a divided nation and you don't solve the original problem as quickly as you do when holding those taking illegal actions to account for their actions.  Crime and punishment not legislate and legislate.

The quote for most is, "(The Constitution) Says what the federal government can't do to you, but doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf.  Obama doesn't actually say that this is a bad thing but in context he is clear that it more limiting then he believes it should be.  Obama spoke often and freely about what the government should do for its people and rarely about what people should do for themselves - though he did in his Father's Day speech.

It is the opinion of Conservatives that they don't need government intrusion in their lives (leaving aside the many calls for regulation, banning and censorship for a moment) and the idea of an administration which thinks the greatest thing the government can do is decide who gets what, when and how is a bit terrifying.  Socialism has so many shining examples of failures not because the idea of being socially responsible is a bad idea but because socialism requires that it be controlled by fallible humans who must not only decide day-to-day what people will need but also be able to predict what they will need in the future in an ever increasingly scarce environment.  It takes a person with a great ego to believe they are such a person.

Jer, based on what killa

Submitted by Radical1979 on Tue, 11/23/2010 - 10:37pm.

Jer, based on what killa said, that Obama doesn't like the Constitution takes away to many powers from the federal government, this supports him.  Killa didn't use the word, "rip".  Killa did imply that Obama doesn't like that our Constitution has not been "interpreted" for economic "justice".  Surely that is true.  I don't see where Obama says that the legislature should be used to bring about those changes.

Obama clearly wants those changes, and I presume that because those changes are not allowable based on our Constitution, Obama does see it as flawed.

"But Obama, then an Illinois state lawmaker, said the legislative branch of government, rather than the courts, probably was the ideal avenue for accomplishing that goal."

That is a direct quote from the article you linked at WorldNetDailly which contained the embedded video of the Obama 2001 interview.  Actually, it is an inference drawn from Obama's response to a caller during the interview, but I believe, like WND, the inference is a proper one.

True, killa didn't use the word "rip" nor did I claim that he did.  That was WND's term.  And Rush added his customary pejorative buzz-words such as "perverted" "Marx" "Soviet Union"-- all of which were designed to convey the notion that Obama has no respect for the Constitution, and then fit it in with the "hatred of America" narrative the Right has been vigorously pushing against the President.

Think of it this way:  I would imagine a Second Amendment absolutist would have preferred the drafters of the Constitution omit the pesky reference to a "well-regulated militia" and add a phrase such as "and we hereby affirm the right of every citizen to own and carry weapons and/or firearms wherever and whenever it is so desired, without any interference, infringement, or regulatory action by or on behalf of any state or agency thereof."  Would the mere recognition that such language doesn't exist--even expressed disappointment at its absence--be tantamount to a rejection of the entire document?  Of course not.  But that is precisely the type of faulty extrapolation which is being embraced by Obama's detractors.

I never have been able to get through to you just how badly I dislike Obama.

If you think Obama has been mistreated by some words typed on a thread in a blog site that is further from Obamas' personal existence than Dorothy's farmhouse was from the Land of Oz, then you are entirely too sensitive about race relations.

If you feel so badly about what you observed growing up in the Jim Crow South, don a hair shirt and do penance.

It is my opinion that Obama has not only done nothing commendable, he has done so many things diametrically opposed to commendability that there are not enough bad words to describe him.

To answer your question directly, at no point would I consider any criticism of Obama's performance out of line.

If someone uses blatant racial putdowns and insults towards Obama personally, they should be called on it; but I believe too many liberals would use the phrase "racial mockery" when there was nothing more involved than the mockery part.

That is the unseen insidiousness of political correctness when it comes to defending against charges of racism.

Spare me your bleeding heart, sympathetic, liberal bullshit.

"Boy" is a word in the English language.  If you choose to see it as being used in an offensive way, that is your problem.

"Monkey" is a word in the English language.  If you choose to see it as being used in an offensive manner, that, too, is your problem.

"Half-breed" also is a word in the English language.  In the mid to late 1800's, it was likely used derogatorily more towards the offspring of White-Indian congress than towards blacks of mixed race.

If any black person believes these words are being used acrimoniously, I am quite sure that they will see to it that the situation will be handled appropriately.

My basic concern with racial relations is that I only care that  race-baiting blacks and pusillanimous liberals like you can malign me as a racist, not get called out for doing so, and then have the nerve to tell me to "crack" open a history book or apply a "little common sense".

Typical of you to tout your non-racist status by accusing others of being inconsiderate at the least, and racist at worst.

Deflect away, while you continue to demonstrate a disgusting, liberal, holier-than-thou one-sidedness.

Bozo.

I don't know about being thin-skinned.........I know how to take care of myself, but the main question would be  - why the hell would I hang around a lib website??? How much of my time do I want to waste?? All I have to do is catch ANY MSM outlet, and I'm up to speed on the libs. And, believe it or not, I DO listen to (occasionally, just to keep my little peabrain engaged, although I never learn much) Stephanie Miller, the Sarge...............and, God, I hate to admit this, but I even listened to BadAir American when it was on............with Al Franken - who is a complete self-appointed fool, and that nasty chick..........what the hell is her name?? Oh.....this place is teeming with libs..........I have 'discussions' with many of them. They usually don't want to talk to me after one or two conversations.......at least not about anything that matters!!! Which is fine with me.........at least they know where I stand.

Wow, boys and girls!!! I just

Submitted by killa37 on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 12:37pm.

Wow, boys and girls!!! I just woke up here in Hawaii.......look at all the fun and games I've been missing since I went to bed last night!!!

Considering how this whole conversation started - on a COMPLETELY different subject - I'm mildly astonished that the thread has been blown up completely in the direction of 'racism', and WHO brings it up every time???

I grew up here in Hawaii......in 'reverse' racism - I WAS the 'victim', although I never looked at it that way..........are we not men?? I've been self-employed for 30 years, and in that time I've hired, either directly or indirectly (which means giving someone a job, paying them, their taxes, social security, Medicaire, numerous insurances, unemployment, medical, bla bla bla bla), and in that time I've had Hawaiian, Tahitians, Tongans, Samoans, Chinese, Japanese, Phillipino, Thai, Indonesian, Micronesian, Mexican, Brazilian, Ecuadorian, Peruvian, Puerto Rican, Canadian, German, Portuguese, French, Jewish...........and all kinds of mixes of these 'races'..........as well as good old Americans. (Well, they were ALL either Americans or here LEGALLY!!!) And I'm sure I've forgotten some. I've even had a gay guy or two on my jobs, I think..........and I know that I hired two lesbians to do some housecleaning. I don't think I've had a transgender or my job yet, or a Moooooooooooooooooslem, although I had a mid-eastern guy who gave me some inside scoop on the 'religion of peace'. Maybe I need to go hire a transsexual Mooooooooooooooooslem to round out my resume!!!

So.....my point is............I don't wanna hear about race!!!! Been there, done that, got the T-shirt to prove it...................and I'm bored allready.

Jer, I don't know anything about sneaking up behind you like a chicken shit........the only time I've ever talked to you is when you showed up first. I don't mind conversation, but if somebody's gonna lay out some crap, it's toilet time, and I'm doing the flushing.

You seem really hung up on some of the things that I've said........I'd say calling Obama 'Boy Blunder' is rather mild, considering what a disaster he is. And, NO.......he can't dance, or throw a baseball, or shoot a basketball, or even speak extemporaneously.......and that has NOTHING to do with his 'race'. And...........yep............I DID say those other things that you repeated......and I sure as hell could say the same thing about a 'white' guy, or any other color, for that matter.  And I'll tell you why WE have a field day with Mooooooochelle's posterior, in case you can't figure it out - she seems to think that she is the queen of the 'food police' and want's to tell US how and what to eat...............and, looking at her - do you think she has any credibility??? So she's fair game, as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway ,Jer.............I'm not too wrapped up about the way things go here sometimes, because I know that people have different opinions.........but I'll say mahalo (thanks) for the apology. I'll apologize back to you for any personal statements I've made to you......but I won't apologize for anything I've ever written with regards to the subject matter at hand.

Aloha and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

If Killa were using the venacular to mock the mentally disabled, then I could see your point. You aren't saying that blacks lack the intellictual capacity to speak correct English, are you?

If you were an African-American and aware of killa's posting history [e.g. calling "Boy Blunder" Obama a "half-breed cocksu*ker" and comparing him to a "monkey"...multiple disparaging references to the size of the first lady's posterior] would you interpret the post I referenced as "racially insensitive"?

Simple answer: No

Not so simple answer: "boy blunder" alludes, as far as I'm concerned, to "boy wonder". You see, the 0 thinks of himself as Batman, but he ain't even a good Robin.

"Half-breed co$#sucker", well, only one of these has been verified.

"Monkey": "Chimpy McHitler"- Need I say more?

Third person Jer---

A reasonable post.

Problem is, you , like me, view most events through the prism of your ideological eccentricities, and cannot, as a rule, see that what you consider as actions relevant to being a standup guy,  a liberal berating conservatives over what you perceive to be racist remarks, is actually no more earth-shattering than being just a liberal who disagrees with conservatives.

Who appointed you as the official arbiter of what is, or is not, either out of line, borderline, or too racially sensitive to put in a line?

No one.  You ride to battle on your conscience.  Too bad you didn't have a sit down with your conscience prior, and talk things over a bit before riding off hell bent for leather.

In trying to tie the phrase "lawd have moicy" to killa's tail as if it were a racist statement, you seem to neglect that southerners talk with a drawl, and that the pronunciation  "moicy" would likely come out of the old Five Points section of Brooklyn.

You try and slide effortlessly by because you think mentioning a possible nexus with previous posts by killa will somehow makes the case for attenuation by context.

That might work in court, but on a thread, not so much.  It is next to impossible to wring any type of nuance out of a typed word without heavy injections of your personal prejudices.

You say to killa, "I'm not accusing you of racism".

You say you don't deal out race cards.  You despise the practice, you say.

I say, despite you reserving the right to object to conduct and comments where and when you think it appropriate, that you have not proved your case regarding not flicking the race card.

Matthew...do you believe there is a distinction between accusing someone of uttering or publishing racially insensitive remarks and accusing someone of racism?  If you do, then there is some common ground for understanding motive and intent in this area of discourse and conduct.  If you don't, then your conclusion must be that I am playing the race card and there is little chance of convincing you otherwise.

Of course there is a distinction between accusing someone of uttering or publishing racially insensitive remarks and accusing someone of racism.

There is an enormous chasm between the two.

The problem, Jer, is that liberals and Democrats so screwed up the delineation between the two, for purely selfish political reasons, that now all bets are off as far as I'm concerned.

Your intentions may be pure as the driven snow, but as you are a liberal Democrat, I don't fully trust you.

You represent an outlook that is anathema to me.

Consider yourself, if you are truly pure at heart, as merely collateral damage from the unlimited, unforgiving, and unforgettable race card flicking activities engendered by your Lib-Dim brethren.

I have no problem with someone standing up and speaking out against racism.

Unfortunately, as I alluded to earlier, it only seems to matter when  racism  rears it's ugly head, real or imagined, against blacks.

For far too long, I have watched people with skin the color of mine, take undeserved hits from the likes of Jackson, Sharpton, et al; racist bastards, every one.  To the core.

I saw your digs at killa, all along, as unnecessarily vituperative and indicative of absolutely nothing more than either white liberal guilt, or a chance to score points against a conservative via the race card.

I am the one who stated it is virtually impossible to wring nuance out of a typed word, but I will tell you that my impression of what you have posted back at killa using his own words as examples, has exhibited nothing more on your part than a desire to play beat down with the race card used as a club, hefted through your personal interpretation of what was said rather than how he meant the wording to be understood.

I base this on the fact that killa speaks his mind.  The fact that he may come across as less than a stalwart practitioner of political correctness should be considered an asset as far as I'm concerned.

But then, you and I agree on very, very few things.

I believe, in my personal and private life, in live and let live.

If a liberal were to inadvertently step on my toes,  no harm, no foul.

If a liberal decides to tell me how correct he is in his personal ideology, again, it is a free country.

When a liberal tells me how and why he is correct and then proceeds to tell me how and why I am incorrect in my beliefs, then he has thrown down the gauntlet, and placed himself in my sights.

All bets, at that point, are off.

I don't pal around with liberals.  I have no friends who are liberal.  That is my choice.

The only liberals I interact with are here at NBs, and quite honestly, I had only an inkling at best coming in, that you people were so damned weird.

I find the overall liberal concept and attitude to be utterly insensible.

For years there was a group known as the "Silent Majority".

In a way it describes conservatives today, people who, generally speaking, are willing to go along to get along.

Unfortunately, history has shown that Rep./Dem. politics is cyclical, and most people float along happily  until the group currently in power extends itself further than common sense would dictate, and ends up getting tossed out through the elective process.

It was said long ago that when the voting public realizes it can vote itself benefits, the decline will begin.

A similar statement that is especially true as regards liberal Democrats like Obama, is:

"When you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can rely on Paul's support."

The decline began with LBJ's "Great Society", mid 1960's, and the slippery slope gets steeper each time a Dem takes office; exponentially so when they manage to consolidate power as the Obama Administration did in the 2008 election.

California has been ruled by Dems in Sacramento, seemingly forever.  On occasion in the once Golden State, conservatives rise to the challenge presented.  All too often though, an unelected federal judge rules against the majority vote.

I honestly can't say whether or not this one time beautiful place to live has a chance to survive illegals, earthquakes, the Hollywood weirdo elite, and the clowns in the capital city.

As far as Moonbeam Jerry Brown, he is of the unaware, the unapologetic for what he did the first time through as governor, and apparently is also of the undead.

Voting these %&**$@#% 's out of office is like trying to shovel back the tide with a pitchfork.

What's A Madrassa, Lib-Dim?

Submitted by miss911ninja on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 12:56am.

You just have to hear this! (I'm changing the subject a bit, but still talking about a Lib-Dim.)

Remember when Whoopi walked off the set of The View because BO'R said "Muslims attacked us on 9/11?"  Well Whoopi was a guest on his show tonight, and she was trying to school Bill about Muslim sensitivities. The conversation drifted to Muslims overseas, and Bill took the opportunity to mention madrassas, pausing for a moment to ask Whoopi if she knew what a madrassa was.

SHE DIDN'T KNOW!

So Bill politely explained what a madrassa was, and how there are thousands of them all over the middle east, and Whoopi said something like, "Well, that could be true..." and Bill said it IS true blah blah blah and then I turned off the TV in disgust.

This woman is constantly running her mouth about Islam and she doesn't know JACK! This is probably why a lot of the Lib-Dims act so self righteous and indignant when someone indicates they have a problem with Islam. They're just totally IGNORANT about what Islam is all about!

I like that, too, as Islam is "sorry".

Oh, maybe I should amend that to "the radical Islamic fringe  jihadists are sorry", so as not to offend Whoopi Goldberg.  That would be racist.

You've been to the Kona coast, Jer??? I think Upcountry must be from Maui, since that is what they call the slopes of Haleakala. Maui is a nice place to visit. I live on the north shore of Kauai, which is also a nice place to visit, unless we're in one of our 40 days and 40 nights of rain, which happens sometimes. There ARE years when we hold the world record for precipitation......or was that perspiration???

My parents, my wife and I, my brother and sister and their families all flew to Hawaii in the summer of 1991 and stayed on the Kona coast of the Big Island to view "The Eclipse of the Century" for which clear weather was a virtual certainty [or so we were told] at that time of year.  It rained...or at least was overcast just enough to ruin the experience from our vantage point.

However, we love Hawaii and have been to Maui a couple of times since that occasion, but haven't made it over to Kauai.  Maybe next time.

Submitted by killa37 on Wed, 11/24/2010 - 10:03pm.

That 'overcast' might have been 'vog'..........which is volcanic fog........although in 1991, I can't remember if there was a live volcanic eruption going on. There's been a live one on the Big Island for quite some time in the past few years, however, and the Kona side seems to get voggy every afternoon.

During any kind of south winds, we even get the vog drifting up to our island, and it really changes things, because it is dense and gray, and cuts down on visibility.

My sister had seen a total eclipse in Washington state a few years before and she got us all thoroughly excited over the prospect of witnessing the one over Hawaii in '91.  The lure was the length of totality--over four minutes--and the fact that at that time of year it was an 80% certainty of clear weather along the Kona coast.

I woke up in the mddle of the night and noticed it was clouding up and was just hoping it would clear up for the event.  It was kind of hit and miss.  Some went out in boats and had great views, and of course at the higher elevations and the observatory it was clear as a bell.  We hopped in the car and drove around frantically hoping to catch an opening, but it mostly was a huge disappointment.  And then later, I had to read the reports of people who did see it in all its magnificence--some areas of Hawaii and all across Mexico.  Made me feel even worse.

In fact, I'm getting pissed off just thinking about it again.

Happy damn Thanksgiving...

Maui's great for wind surfing ( regular surfers hate the wind), most surf spots here are more crowded than on Oahu. In fact folks that move here from Oahu think the surf sucks on Maui, they are right.

Kauai has some huge beaches, and lots of surf spots...

May be clear weather for an Annular solar eclipse here?

Of course if one goes to the trouble to catch one better be a Total eclipse...

At the risk of starting another debate on where Obama was born, there can be no doubt that Obama never bonded with America. Huh?  Do think that the North Korea’s attack on Yeonpyeong is a crisis that Barack needs? and is not going to let go to waste?

Of course, I cannot predict the future, but I can draw likely conclusions from past behavior and attitudes.

Judging from what we all know about Obama, I am hard pressed to imagine any insult to, or attack on, the US of A that would impel him to strike back.  He is prosecuting the war in Afghanistan because he has inherited it from Bush, and he realizes that if concedes that contest he is deader than a door nail politically.  But defend the US in any other context, including Korea?  Not very likely.

Rips the hearts out of her opponent..

Norah O'Donnell should be drug tested for Crack or brain tested for Alzheimers.  There is no way Sarah Palin is ripping the hearts out of her opponents.

You have to have a heart in order for it be ripped out in the first place.

Liberals have a tendency to mistakes hearts with poor judgement, that causes poor choices, that is keeping our country poor right now!!
