John Ridley: Don't Extradite Polanski Because California is Broke

Roman Polanski, Director; & John Ridley, Former MSNBC Co-Host | NewsBusters.orgJohn Ridley, a former MSNBC co-host and a Huffington Post contributor, used the California state budget crisis as an excuse to forego the extradition of rapist director Roman Polanski on CNN’s Campbell Brown program on Monday: “The people of California- we’re broke. What are we going to do? We’re going to prosecute him with IOUs? Let’s figure out some other way to deal with this for the moment.”

Ridley appeared with CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin just after the bottom of the 8 pm Eastern hour. Anchor Campbell Brown first asked the former MSNBC personality, “This guy [Polanski] raped a 13-year-old girl. Why is Hollywood rallying behind him?” He replied, “Roman Polanski’s story is really interwoven with the Los Angeles story. He came here- he made a seminal film...Rosemary’s Baby. And then, of course, the horrible- the Manson murders would happen to his wife, the Tate-LaBianca murders.....So, I think there are a lot of people who feel like- here’s an individual who represents Hollywood, who’s been persecuted by it, and has really lived a pretty horrible life, and what more can you do to this guy after 30 years...why not...let it rest?”

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Later, after Brown mentioned the French foreign minister’s intervention on Polanski’s behalf, Toobin blasted how people were using the director’s life story as a defense: “Well, I mean, he is a very famous guy, and he is revered in Europe, and- you know, it just seems to be such an insult to Holocaust survivors and to crime victims’ families. Yes, his parents were- died in the Holocaust. Yes, his wife was murdered, and a lot of people in similar situations don’t then go rape 13-year-old children...You don’t get a pass because you’ve had a sad life.”

The analyst continued with a sarcastic retort of Ridley: “I disagree with John in one respect. You know, he’s had such a horrendous life. You know, he’s lived in Paris for 30 years directing movies. You know, you might want to sign me up for that horrible life.” The Huffington Post contributor laughed it up with Toobin as he replied, “I’m not defending him. I’m explaining the circumstances. Come on.” But he continued with his budget crisis excuse: “At the risk of inciting Jeffrey Toobin’s ire, I will say this. It is about the people in California, Jeffrey. The people of California- we’re broke. What are we going to do? We’re going to prosecute him with IOUs? Let’s figure out some other way to deal with this for the moment.”

The Hollywood crowd is sure getting creative with its defense of its favorite criminal director.

What are we going to do?

What are we going to do? We’re going to prosecute him with IOUs?

Well, since he's already been prosecuted maybe we can change the law for him and execute him like the scum he is.

Save money

Hire the Mossad to take care of the problem - quick, effective and he won't even have to travel to the U.S.

Maybe raise some money

"The people of California- we’re broke"

Typical liberal fool. The people are not broke. The government is because it squanders the people’s money on vote buying schemes. How about trying this for a change. Do what the California constitution says you can and nothing else. Hey wow look at all the extra money that messed up state would have. These liberal idiots can’t walk out the door without help.

And Toobin?  Is he the

And Toobin?  Is he the typical liberal idiot/fool?

Jer

No, Toobin is an atypical

No, Toobin is an atypical liberal idiot/fool, but a fool nonetheless.

"

Humm...  I guess, then, that California should halt ALL trials and sentencing hearings because they can't afford it. What's that, this idea is ludicrous?  Yea, I know!

Wow, it really looks like the Liberals are running out of excuses to let a pedophile get away with his crimes.

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.
The US Constitution

Unless you're a fetus.
The US Supreme Court

You're right

The illogic of Ridley's premise is astounding, but not unexpected.   As you pointed out, the limosine liberals have run out of excuses for this rapist.

Look for Hollywood to appeal to Schwarzenegger to pardon this felon.

Unless you are going to try him on the escape charges

No trial is necessary and won't cost any money. He already pled guilty for the statutory rape charge and just needs to be sentenced.

Somehow, I told you so, just doesn't quite say it." Will Smith in 'I, Robot.'

An Example of How Liberals DON'T Think

There's no need to prosecute Polanski.  He already pled guilty in 1978 to the crime of plying a thirteen-year-old girl with booze and drugs while doing a photo shoot with her for a magazine and then having sexual relations with her and sodomizing her.  The issue is, and was, that the ADA and the defense attorney agreed to a plea bargain of time served; however, the judge in the case, as was his right, did not accept the plea agreement and was going to sentence the rapist to prison.  Rather than face hard time...and some other hard things...Polanski became a fugitive from justice.

So, what we are left with is radical Hollywood lining up to defend a rapist who pled guilty to his crime and then left the country to escape the justice he had coming to him.  Almost makes one wish for some type of reciprocity to be visited on the Hollywood "elites" who defend this scum.  As Toobin said, "you don't get a pass because you've had a sad life."  If Polanski gets off, after we've finally gotten our hands on him, then there's no need to keep up the facade of a Sexual Offenders List because anyone who had a "sad life" now can use the Polanski Defense instead of the Twinkie Defense.

I believe that most of the

I believe that most of the jerks defending this guy have no clue that he has already been found guilty for ''sex with a minor'' (with the other heinous crimes dropped via plea bargaining).  All it takes is a plane ticket - the Euros make sure he gets on the plane and the California folks greet him when he arrives.

Heck, I know a lot of parents of girls that would volunteer to ''assist'' in bringing him back.  (My wife has volunteered to castrate him.)  Just think, he may turn to Islam in prison and slice his own head off.

"slice his own head off"?!

Blimey!!   now that's an idea....  ;>)   coulden't happen to a more deserving  gentelman !     WW    When you elect a communist for your President...  don't be surprised when Communisem breakes out!...

Forget it, Jake...

In a similar salutary effort to return to fiscal control, California is about to release thousands of convicted prisoners, so space should be available soon. Besides, it's worth pointing out that Polanski won't take up very much space in prison.

Jake Gittes:
Hello, Claude. Where'd you get the midget?

Maybe he can serve his term in a Juvenile Facility.

A COUPLE OF THINGS...

Maybe California is too broke to provide all the welfare programs for both legal & illegal alike? Sounds like they should stop paying out to those who are on the dole.

The other thing, Polanski plead guilty, he never allowed the judge to sentence him. He now should be facing a crapload of charges as a fugitive, & should be sent up for a long time for drugging, & raping a 13 year old girl. He was 40-something at the time, & does'nt deserve to be cheered on because he can direct a film better then most.

California is broke?  Is that morally or economically?

Worse than that . . .

It's like totally, dude.  ;-)

So who else do we not prosecute?

So, who else do we not prosecute?  Child rapists in general!?  I mean, those pesky he-said/the-child-said cases are so hard to get a conviction on ... so why bother (you get the sarcasm - right?)

What about identity theft - I mean it's HARD to convict those people - so why not let it go?

The list is as endless as it is stupid - and not to even go into the idea that maybe these Hollywood types would RIGHTFULLY freak if THEIR 13 year old was molested.

I mean, don't these people GET it!??!

Help me understand this please......

For the life of me, I can not understand the way the left in this country is standing behind a confessed child rapist and asking that the US Judicial System turn a blind eye to his case. Yet, the same left are in an outright frenzy when they ask the same US Judicial System to bring charges against true American Patriots who interrogated enemies of state in order to protect us all.

Please help me understand the standard by which these irrational people make their decisions.

I think the only people

I think the only people supporting Polanski are celebrities who can only define right and wrong in terms of how things affect them, and some sick people who insist 13 year old girls are fair game, sexually.  I believe there are a decent number of democrats (not in the entertainment industry) who are apalled at Polanski and would happy to see him behind bars.

Thank you, Rad1979, for the

Thank you, Rad1979, for the balanced view.  Many seem to be overlooking the fact that it is the liberal Toobin who appropriately observes:  You don't get a pass for having a sad life.

Jer

Little people, beware!

What's the biggest difference between the two situations, beside the past court appearances of the pedophile in question?  One is a well known celebrity and the the others are faceless, nameless government employees who happened to be working for the government at the time the person the liberals hate the most, G.W. Bush, was President.

What's the moral of this story?  You're more likely to find support amongst liberals if you are a well known celebrity, even if that celebrity is a pedophile, than an unknown employee of the Liberal enemy, for the liberals will protect and support someone who's a celebrity while the little people, people they don't know, are dead meat as long as they can be linked to the liberal's political enemy, no matter how tenuous that link may be.

And the Liberals call themselves the Protector of the Common Man?  Only if that man is a "common" celebrity!

Liberals journalists = Pro-rape and

Liberal journalists = Pro-rape and pro-pedophilia activists.  They loved Tookie Williams and the "Jena 6" so I guess they're also pro-murder and pro-black-on-white-beating activists.

It's not difficult to see the pattern.

Pro-rape liberals

That goes without saying. Add to that the 'safe schools czar' scandal. Anything goes in liberalism.

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

safe school czar scandal?

what's the safe school czar scandal, Sergeant Rock?  I haven't heard about that one. It's becoming difficult for me to keep up with all the madness - or "news," if you prefer.

Safe 'Sex' School Czar

Hannity was talking about it today. This guy as a teacher was approached by a 15 year-old boy that confided in him that he was involved in a sexual relationship with an 'older man'. He didn't report the crime to authorities, of course. And, he's a flamin' homo himself.

HOORAY! for safe schools!

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

Great.

Great. Our schools are becoming safe for homosexual seduction, pedophiles and child molesters.

Hopefully the kid won't be charged with a hate crime for reporting it.

Obama Freak Show

Same guy was part of the group behind 'fist gate'. Never heard of that one have you?

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

No

No, and I'm not sure I want to.  I can imagine what "fist gate" means, but go ahead and tell me.  I'm on an empty stomach, so I should be ok.

Silly Rabbit, Fisting's for kids!

A few years ago up in Massachusetts some gay rights group, GLSEN I believe, put together a presentation for 13-18 year olds demonstrating safe methods for bizarre, largely homosexual, sex acts. Of course, it was paid for by a grant or something that was intended to prevent HIV/AIDS.

The Gay Rights Agenda is for REAL.

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

Isn't that just swell.

Yes, I believe it's real too.  I suppose a person is supposed to wear a rubber glove before sticking it up another guy's butt in order to be "safe."  *choke*

If anybody ever tried to stick anything up my butt, they'd get "fisted" alright. Or "Shot-ed," "knife-ed," "kicked-ed," "eyes-clawed-out-ed," "badly hurt-ed" or something for sure.

I am thinking the best thing to do these days is to get in shape and learn to fight, and teach your kids to do the same - defend themselves. And also, to learn how to use a firearm, or weapons in general.

Such is the state of the country it seems.

Fisticuffs

Yeah, though I am not quite sure how you would get HIV/AIDS performing that act improperly? Guess you had to be there!

Good lord...how many Polanski blogs do we need here in the last few days...no offense to anyone personally, but I just don't get it, we had the dems in committee today vote down the public option, you would hope there would be a blog post about that.

Sorry, how many ways can we all comment on this Polansky deal when there is so much going on out there politically besides this subject.

Besides that...it's my 4 year anniversary here today...and no Open Thread either...so I guess I will say happy birthday to my four years of enjoyment here at this site, that was once a wild, wild, west show...I thank some that are here no longer, and those present as well, this has been nothing but a great info site, plus the friends I have made across this land...I've been very blessed.  ;-)

My guess.....he wasn't.  But now he's going to have 2 ear lobes as a reminder to think things through before he does them....

According to Obama, my son should have died of blood loss in front of the hospital.....I am currently still laid off, and my insurance went with the job.  What gives?  I thought we needed ObamaCare because all of us uninsured couldn't get medical help when we needed it.  Hmmmmmmm........something fishy here.  I better take my son right back and direct the doctors to remove his stitches, cause otherwise reality will undermine the newest Dear Leader!

Actually, if your baby back ribs are really good, I'll ditch the low-fat diet, fly to Big Sky country and chow down.  It's been a long time.

Jer

Jer,

LOL-Damn, now that the summer holidays are over, I have to go back to veggies, white meat chicken and fish.

You know - healthy stuff.

At least I can still grill all of the above.  :-)

"healthy stuff"

I know it all too well...yeecch!

Jer

Jer,

Its a good thing that (lightly hickory smoked) BBQ chicken is among my favorite things off the ol' Weber.

Of course, this is where the skill comes in, as dark meat chicken can be left on the grill forever and three hours (love that), but white meat chicken (as in bone-in slpit breasts) go from undercooked to rubber in about three minutes.

Good thing I have that part nailed down, as I hate dry bird.

-Dave

The election of 2010 will be our last chance to save our republic. -Neal Boortz

I hate dry bird.

We may be polar opposites at politics, but dammit we're brothers to the bone when it comes to chicken.

Jer

Amen Jer

Who the heck would want to the dry white when you can have the suculent dark.

Well, Shawn...

I had always associated Republicans with the hated dry white, but my experience at NewsBusters has taught me not to make such over-broad generalizations about chicken and politics.

Jer

You two are kinda creepy, you know that?

Well Jer when it comes to mr shy...

I consider him a different kind poulty altogether, I think of him as a tudurkan

BT... sincere good wishes on your fourth anniversary. That's like about 130 years in real life, I think. :=]. You are one of the originals.

You are always a joy to read, and I like your passion. You add a lot to the site, and have always been fun to "talk" to. Many, many more years for you on here!

BT........

I have posted only on occasion. When this site has great posters such as yourself, Mr. Helm, Mr. Shy, RR GOP, Cool Arrow and a host of others that I cant fit all in here, what I have to say would only be preaching to the choir.

And yes, I have felt the cold wind, and with my view of winter I am not a happy camper.

Neither are the

Neither are the algoreglobalwarming crowd.

...but they can continue to pretend via their bully-pulpit...the SCM.

That's what I thought -- a dude! Okay, that's one I can cross off my list. LOL. And I think I can safely assume Mr. Shy is male (self-explanatory name -- plus, I've seen his video)...and if JWF and Tailgunner are not male, I will eat my shoe! There's a few more crossed off my list. ^_^

Happy 4 year anniversary!

Rad... Thank you as

Rad...

Thank you as well.

I'm very interested in the same subjects you mentioned in your post.

Variety would be nice.

Btw..as an aside, just saw a Xmas ad for Time/Life on Fox for Xmas Carols...what is the matter with these people, it's not even they end of Sept. quite yet, let alone Halloween or Thanksgiving.

Things are so commercialized that they are doing their own-selves in and do not realize it...who cares...whose going to buy this BS all the time. ..by Christmas we won't even be listening....they are so tuned out.

They seem to have money for

They seem to have money for every Libtard program they can think of and able to support a few million illegal immigrants.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 86% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

RR GOP

Yes, but war and going after Polanski are draining our resources !!!! :p

No need for a trial, since he already pled guilty

As Patterico points out, there is no need for a trial, since he already pled guilty.  So, no money spent on a trial.  Seems logical to me, Mr. Ridley.

Mr. Ridley...

I have a long, broken broom stick all set for you.  And then I'll simply move to Nevada.  Way cool...

May I Ask Why You Are All Obssessed With Rape?

I think I have found the conservative equivalent of one of those feelings trips that liberals always have about saving the whales or global warming: child rape. Just say "child rape" and you all go off the deep end pushing for laws that, like cap-and-trade laws, not only do nothing to solve the problem but make it utterly worse. California is being bankrupt by that ridiculous Jessica's Law even though the case in question occurred in FLORIDA and we DON'T, I repeat, DON'T have a sexual predator epidemic. We are paying for costly sex offender registries that do nothing but harass those reformed offenders that have done their time and can be killed off any time some vigilante-wannabe who thinks they should be done off; Children in remote areas are in greater danger because most sex offenders have to move into these remote areas in order to comply with these area restrictions;

I'll let you in on a little secret: It's mainly the security companies that profit off of these sex-offender laws by using our tax dollars to pay for their shoddy ankle bracelets and other wares they try to peddle to us. They are bankrupting us and endangering ours and our children's lives, liberty, and happiness. How hard is that to figure out?

link or slink

and can be killed off any time some vigilante-wannabe who thinks they should be done off

Is there an epidemic of this I'm not aware of?

California is being bankrupt by that ridiculous Jessica's Law

Of all the things that are bankrupting California, Jessica's Law is at the bottom of the list.

though the case in question occurred in FLORIDA and we DON'T, I repeat, DON'T have a sexual predator epidemic.

Florida didn't force California to enact that law. It was enacted by many states as a precaution. If it's not an epidemic, someone needs to get on the phone with NBC fast. All it takes is a laptop and some extra time, and pedophiles start appearing everywhere.

We are paying for costly sex offender registries that do nothing but harass those reformed offenders

Different studies on the issue of repeat offense puts it somewhere between 50% and 80%. Being out of jail does not equal reformed.

Children in remote areas are in greater danger because most sex offenders have to move into these remote areas in order to comply with these area restrictions;

Wait, I thought the reformed criminals were being unfairly harrassed. Now they're still a danger? Aside from that, sex abuse happens in cities just as much as anywhere else. Living in a remote place doesn't automatically mean the children are less protected.

If it's bankrupting us to enforce laws and keep children safe, we should just hang it all up now.

I Live In CA!

Send him to trial!

Ridley's argument is so assinine it doesn't even deserve a sarcastic retort.  S.O.B.

actually, his logic is pretty sweet

you could break into his house, steal a bunch of stuff, and then get off scot free because the state has no time to prosecute you.

no matter who you are-a pedophile priest or a pedophile director

when you plead guilty to your crimes-you go to prison.

you folks in Cali-get your legislators to remove crimes by pedophiles off the books-make it okay to drug young kids and abuse them. if that's what you want do it.better yet lets take all the laws off the books-you folks have fun out there.
