CNN has displayed a double standard in its coverage of the difficulties involving the extended family of Sarah Palin versus that of President Barack Obama. Two programs on the network on Thursday evening used multiple soap opera references to describe recent occurrences in the “Palin family saga.” This contrasts with two incidents involving the aunt and half-brother of the president, which have received minimal coverage from the network.
Anchor Roland Martin began the soap opera imagery in his promo for a segment about Palin on the No Bias, No Bull program: “Folks, talk about ‘The Young and the Restless’ -- these days Governor Sarah Palin must be feeling like she’s living in a soap opera. It’s everything from her daughter’s unplanned pregnancy, to a family member ending up behind bars, and it’s not over yet. We’ll catch you up with all the real-life Palin family drama.” After a commercial break, a CNN graphic referenced another daytime TV title at the beginning of the segment: “Palin: The Days of Her Lives.” The anchor also used a similar line, speaking of the “days of the Palin lives.”
CNN correspondent Jessica Yellin continued from where Martin left off as she introduced her report about the Alaska governor: “Sarah Palin....a politician with a meteoric rise, a picture-perfect family, and a made-for-TV story -- daytime TV, that is. First, Palin’s daughter, Bristol, and her baby daddy, Levi Johnston, split up. Then the teenager’s sex life became the talk of ‘The Tyra Banks Show.’”
After a playing a clip from Johnston’s now infamous appearance on the supermodel’s program, Yellin continued with the soap opera imagery in describing other dramas involving the governor’s extended family: “And like the sands through an hour glass, so are the other dramas in Sarah Palin’s life. Just since the election, her half sister-in-law, seen here in the yellow jumper, was charged with felony burglary for allegedly breaking into a house and taking her four-year-old child with her. And then there’s Sherry Johnston, Levi Johnston’s mom -- she has been charged with six felony drug counts. She pled not guilty, and told the media it's been a rough couple of months.”
Near the end of the segment, Martin shifted away from the daytime TV terminology and borrowed a slogan from a sister TV channel: “You know, our sister network TNT has a slogan called ‘we do drama.’ That might be a new campaign slogan.” About two hours later, CNN political correspondent Candy Crowley briefly revived the imagery during a segment on Anderson Cooper 360: “Personally and professionally, it’s been a rough road for the governor since the Republican ticket was defeated in November. Her relationship with Levi Johnston, the father of Palin’s grandson, has been the stuff of soap operas.”
Near the end of the 2008 presidential race, Zeituni Onyango, the half-aunt of President Obama, and her trouble with immigration authorities became a minor campaign issue. However, CNN gave it scant coverage. On November 1, 2008, anchor Don Lemon gave an news brief about Ms. Onyango: “CNN has confirmed a report that Zeituni Onyango, his late father’s sister, is living in the United States illegally, four years after she was ordered to leave by an immigration judge.” He asked Crowley, then on the campaign trail covering Obama, for the Democrat’s response to the report. She replied that “Barack Obama was asked about it by one of the pool reporters. He ignored it.”
The following day, the network reported that there was an investigation into a “government leak” of the Onyango case. However, it would not give an update on the situation until April 1, 2009, or five months later. During the 9 am and 10 am Eastern hours of the Newsroom program, anchor Frederica Whitfield reported that “President Obama’s aunt is in immigration court in Boston this morning....Zeituni Onyango was ordered deported in 2004. Instead, she stayed and has been living in public housing, in Boston. Her asylum request is being reconsidered under a little-used provision. It allows denied asylum claims to be reheard if applicant can show something has changed to make them eligible. Her reasons for seeking asylum have not been made public.”
The second Obama family incident involved Samson Obama, one of the president’s half-brothers. As he was traveling to his sibling’s inauguration in January, the U.K. denied Mr. Obama a visa for entry “after immigration officers noticed one of his documents was false.” The BBC also reported that “fingerprint tests linked him to an alleged sex attack on a British girl. He was questioned but not charged over the incident in Berkshire, it added.” CNN devoted no air time to reporting the story of this denial when its details emerged months later in April.
One would guess that the troubles of these two Obama family members, along with the fact that another half-brother lives in a shack in Kenya, doesn’t warrant the use of soap opera imagery, at least in CNN’s view.

April 17, 2009 - 18:48 ET by PopularTechSarah Palin's Family is like a Bad Soap Opera. It was an embarrassment to have her run as the GOP VP with the daily drama. Family Values? What are those? The GOP are now advocates of teenage pregnancy. What a disaster.

April 17, 2009 - 19:35 ET by SmartypantsI don't understand your point. Palin was a bad choice for V.P. because her daughter was pregnant? That is idiocy. "Family values" does not mean that people live picture-perfect lives, where there are no troubles or mistakes. It is pure folly to believe the GOP needs to live up to that kind of standard to be viable. On the contrary, Palin's family situation shows her to be a very real person. Besides, the point of this item was the fact that CNN has virtually ignored Obama's family problems--no comment about that?
The most successful war America has ever waged is quickly becoming President Obama's war on capitalism.
Family Values means no Teenage Pregnancy

Apparently you don't realize that having family values is trying to do the right thing. Family values is taking situations that families deal with and making the best of the situation and try to learn from their mistakes. Family values is understanding the need for morals and trying to live up to them. Family values is standing with your children when they have problems. Family values is putting your family before yourself.

April 17, 2009 - 17:57 ET by iveseenitallOne more positive about the Tea Parties is that the Susan Roesgen "reporting" incident demonstrated true media bias to more people. Americans, for the most part, dislike injustice. As the media continues its immature, ignorant unfairness decent citizens will come to realize what has become of American "journalism". Attacking Sarah Palin, now almost a blood sport for "liberal" ignoramuses, is getting quite old very quickly. And with the internet now on the scene, hiding the truth is becoming an almost impossible task for lying hypocrites. Maybe there is hope after all.

Because we all know, one can't aspire to an ideal unless one is already perfect. And the way to never fall short of ideals is not to have them to begin with.

I believe the media is scared to death of this lady! Know why? They remember (notwithstanding Popular Tech ;-)) how she was received by the conservative base.
I believe they want to try and destroy her before she can even announce her intentions of running (if she does at all). I do, however, believe that the opposite will actually happen. The more they attack her, the more they'll solidify the conservative GOP base. As Rush says, leaders show up in their own time.

And considering he was running on a notoriously protectionist agenda, he would have driven up costs for consumers across the land. Last time I checked, protectionism is not something Libertarians found endearing.

What Wayne Really Said...
April 18, 2009 - 00:19 ET by PopularTechImmigration: "I'm more of a Ron Paul Libertarian on this
one. But it is a complex issue. Libertarians generally believe in open
borders. Under the CURRENT situation that is dangerous (because of the
threat of terrorism) and disastrous (because it will lead to the
BANKRUPTCY of the USA). If we could end welfare and entitlements of all
kinds for immigrants tomorrow, I'd support "open borders." But we all
know that's not going to happen. Even then I'd demand tight border
security to screen for disease, criminal background, terrorism
associations."
Gambling: "On the other hand, I love to
gamble. I’m a risk taker - whether it’s betting on a business idea, a
stock, a million dollar real estate investment, or the Dallas Cowboys. That’s my chosen form of entertainment."

April 17, 2009 - 19:15 ET by Flying_DutchmanAfter this blog, some on this site will recognize me for the prescient, sapient being that I am. Just the other day, one inquisitive NBer asked (to the effect of), ‘Give me a straight answer, why is the media fascinated with Sarah Palin? … and don’t tell me that they are afraid of her.’ I gave her a straight answer which today has been confirmed by this very site; Sarah fills the supermarket tabloid void.
Back in the day, The National Inquirer or some such rag would have had a grainy black and white photo of Sarah Palin and some big guy in a hairy gorilla costume holding hands and walking along an Alaskan creek bed. The huge banner headline would have read: SARAH PALIN: “I AM CARRYING BIG FOOT’S BABY!”
Sadly, such rags have been replaced by glossy’s like Women’s Day, Cosmopolitan, and of course the Internets. (SIC/GWB). But triumphantly, Sarah Palin lives on to fill the void of unbelievable bumpkin folklore!
As a for instance, who among us didn’t at first glance believe the photo-shopped picture of Dear Sarah poolside in an American Flag bikini toting a gun? http://z.about.com/d/diyfashion/1/0/1/F/-/-/Sarah_Palin_Bikini_Costume.jpg
It took a host of conservative bloggers days to debunk this one, and it was time well spent for them and the rest of us who love Dear Sarah. (I love the guy in the background with a Schlitz and a cig. This was your first clue that the picture wasn’t real.)
Anyway, Americans love Dear Sarah for many reasons, not least of which she is from cold, hard, unburnished stock and seems to relish the fact.
Now, I am not sure whether to sue CNN for stealing my material, or have sex with an alien on the mother ship. Any suggestions?

So basic yet you can't figure it out
April 19, 2009 - 05:15 ET by UnsaneThis statement proves to me AGAIN, ad nauseum, that 1) you have no children and 2) you have zero understanding of basic human nature or the concept of freewill.
Many years ago, in my family we children were banned from going to certain places, like a creek that ran close to home. Guess what? I went anyway. Again. And again. And again. I went up to said creek when it was flooded and way over its banks; so close that one false move meant I went into the creek and got swept away.
Now, does this mean I had bad parents? No; it means that they could not watch me 24/7. NO PARENT CAN. The end.
No doubt that when you DO have children, you will spend 8-10 hours a day violently, savagely beating the crap out of them for even the slightest infraction, because of that damned freewill thing that all humans are imbued with. In which case I will be fearing for them.

Sorry respectful, but
April 17, 2009 - 19:41 ET by SmartypantsSorry respectful, but you're wrong. Palin is attacked because she's a Republican, and a conservative one at that. Any attempt to come up with another reason is a waste of effort. Rest assured, if GW Bush's half-brother lived in a shack it would be all over the media. If any relative of his, even a distand cousin, was suspected of a sex crime it would be covered endlessly. Observe how the media treated the coverage of the tea parties this week. They have a chip on their shoulder for anything and anyone that has even a hint of conservatism.
The most successful war America has ever waged is quickly becoming President Obama's war on capitalism.
CNN Dementia = MSM Dementia
April 17, 2009 - 19:10 ET by Forest for the TreesThe recent surge in CNN & the rest of the MSM's unprofessional & childish behavior is staggering. So far I have written 3 letters to CNN execs of Susan Roesgen's abhorrent behavior towards Norm at the Chicago Tea Party. That seems easier to target for a "one-off" incident.
The problem with defending Palin, who I too truly believe has been unfairly brutalized, is that the loons & MSM are coming at her from all sides and it is very difficult to ward off what is obviously a well-funded commando operation on detrimental publicity for Palin or any GOP hopeful that steps forward, or even might step forward.
Perhaps we, the public, can divide and conquer with strategic strikes back where it hurts, now that many of us have read Saul Alinksi's Rules now too! I, for one, feel compelled to dish back their own tactics; enough of being the "Silent Majority" and enough of turn the other cheek.
As one of those first timers to ever step forward and protest at the Tea Party or protest at anything for that matter, I was proud to see so many like minded people speak up & step out. I never wrote letters to WA & Congress in my life before the Obama Spend-a-thon began either. But because of recent events, it is clear, that my work, and others has just begun.

Great idea, slick!
As a resident of that bluest of blue states, we have read VERY little about auntie and her ability to cut in front of LEGAL AMERICANS in need of public housing. Seems our governor and president are old friends from Harvard days - can't imagine that had anything to do with it. And...can you imagine...the Boston Globe/tv stations just don't seem to want to investigate how she managed to obtain public housing as an illegal alien...why she was even working in the housing office for a little walking around money...wonder if she has been collecting welfare from the state, too. And we wonder why the state is close behind California in going broke! I doubt seriously that her nephew has contributed to her subsistence, after all that would have been reportable income. No one even knows if she is still illegally occupying public housing in Boston or if she went back to her friends/family in Ohio.
Following that line of thought, did ANYONE see a picture of any of Obama's relatives who supposedly attended his inauguration? Didn't his grandmother come from Kenya? And his bad-actor half-brother was able to fly from his connection in England (just couldn't spend anytime out of the airport ;-) Why no pictures???

The libs are losing
April 17, 2009 - 19:34 ET by Lord ErondEven worse than the 2008 election, the libs have tipped their hand here severely.
They're losing and they know it.

Excuse me Lord Erond???
April 17, 2009 - 20:00 ET by shawn228I thought the Dems won the 2008 election along with the 2006 election?
"They're losing and they know it."
I'm trying to figure out your logic on how they are losing.

shawn228...
April 17, 2009 - 20:05 ET by dborschjr68I'm anxiously awaiting Lord Erond's response to this. I want to see a good debate, because all I have had the chance to read tonight has been garbage from a person named Cyrano.
You can destroy the Constitution when I'm dead and gone, and unable to defend it.
Until then, back off, you liberal jackasses.
Hi db
April 17, 2009 - 20:07 ET by shawn228Me too. I promise I will try to have my spelling and grammar in order as well :-)

Alas, it appears I must away now. Bummer that. I was so hoping to watch you in action. (ooh, that sounded really wrong, didn't it? Yikes!)
Anyhoos, later shawn. Good luck and happy debating if Lord Erond returns.

Not anymore...it's been
April 19, 2009 - 15:48 ET by JerNot anymore...it's been suspended as part of Obama's "Master Plan for Permanent Rule".
Jer
I THINK that was meant to be hyperbolic....
April 19, 2009 - 18:43 ET by Tailgunner...but it's only partially humorous.
You might have noticed that I don't cut Obama a lot of slack or allow him or his minions the benefit of the doubt.
That's because he's spent his life studying Marx and Alinsky, Wright, Ayers and Frank Marshall Davis.
Having memorized their script, I must assume that Obama knows exactly what he's doing...and that his likeminded appointees are following his exact orders.
But even I don't believe Obama intends to 'rule permanently'.
I believe Obama understands his mission as installing a socialist infrastructure into this country's system of government that cannot easily be removed and must be fed, like a monster, by any future administration.
The Democrat who follows him will have the machinery of tyranny already in place, as Obama had the benefit of ACORN, the liberal media and millions of left-indoctrinated young adults.
Obama will not rule forever, but he'll make damn sure socialism will.

April 17, 2009 - 20:38 ET by kilrodI've been scracthing my head, how do you get a 1/2 sister-in-law, and so, who got the other 1/2??!!~~!!
Palin is being tested by a cruel fire, if she survives and chooses to run for national office i think she will be unstopable. First she has to survive, not only the sub-slime media, the lib pervs, and the faint hearted of the cons. If she survives she will be hard as nails and tougher than whang leather. With strength of character and a vision of where and how to lead this country she will be hard to beat after coming through the fire she has been subjected to. It remains to be seen? I would'nt blame her if she chose to say the hell with it and returned to private life.

April 19, 2009 - 08:03 ET by TailgunnerWhat you call 'thinking' is similar to the function of a pressure relief valve on a fermentation vat in a sewage treatment facility.

April 17, 2009 - 22:32 ET by ConservativeRexI'm still trying to find out if the durn contractors have shown up yet to patch up obamas brothers cracked mud hut walls!
They should have been there by between 1100 & 1500 hrs this past Thursday!
If a president's brother can't get his mud hut walls fixed who can?
Trotted out......
April 17, 2009 - 22:40 ET by PeachyKeenDuring the campaign, whenever Palin's family members made an appearance, many of the CNN and MSNBC anchors/reporters said they were being "trotted out," which has a cynical tone to it. Palin trotted out her little baby, Trig. She trotted out Levi Johnson. She trotted out her pregnant teenage daughter. She trotted out Piper. She trotted out "The First Dude." Everyone from her family was "trotted out," according to CNN and MSNBC. I never once heard a media person say that Barack Obama trotted out his two daughters, or that he trotted out his wife. The coverage of Sarah Palin was disgusting...and it goes on.
Slightly off topic, but thought some might want to read it.
