CNN's Fareed Zakaria: Obama 'Failing' as Leader of Free World

Fareed Zakara, CNN Anchor | NewsBusters.orgIn an interview on CNN.com on Friday titled “Zakaria: Obama disappoints as world leader,” author and CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria threw cold water on the media’s laudatory coverage of President Obama’s trip to Europe: “Although he brought a lot of star power -- the talk of the week -- at least in certain circles in Washington, New York and London -- has been that President Obama is failing in his role as leader of the free world.” He cited a columnist overseas to support his opinion, something that hasn’t really been done in the media’s coverage of the trip. Zakaria also plugged the central thesis of his book, “The Post-American World” --  that the “rest of the world is rising to meet the United States’ position -- economically, politically and culturally.”

The unnamed correspondent who interviewed Zakaria began by asking what the anchor/author thought about the president’s trip. After dropping the “failing” word, he cited a recent column by British columnist Jonathan Freedland in The Guardian, that “President Obama looks neither like JFK nor FDR but rather JEC -- that’s James Earl Carter -- better known here as Jimmy Carter.” The interviewer countered, “But it appears everyone is fawning over him.” Zakaria answered, “President Obama has encountered a Europe that is more resistant to his policy proposals. The French and Germans have their own proposals. The Chinese and Russians have come with their own demands. And everyone expects him to apologize for having caused this mess in the first place.”

The CNN anchor turned to his thesis when the interviewer asked if Obama could be blamed for the “mess” in the global economy: “Of course not. He didn’t cause this mess, and no one really blames him personally. The problems President Obama is facing on the world stage have nothing to do with him. They are really a sign that personality cannot trump power in the world of realpolitik. The real story here is that power is shifting away from American dominance to a post-American world.” Zakaria defended himself after being skeptically asked if he was “just plugging [his] book,” that “what I had outlined [in the book] is coming true. The evidence for this just keeps piling up.”

After explaining his thesis more and outlining his “evidence,” the anonymous correspondent asked Zakaria, “What should the U.S. do?” He replied, “The United States needs to make its own commitment to the system clear. For America to continue to lead the world, we will have to first join it.” Despite using a form of the word “fails” to describe the president’s record, something which got Rush Limbaugh in trouble, the anchor also complimented Mr. Obama: “President Obama seems to understand this and is doing his best at meetings like the G-20 and the NATO summit.”

Zakaria concluded by using a standard left-wing criticism of the American people: “It is also imperative that more Americans become aware of what is going on in other places -- the other 90 percent of the world.” That parting thought could help inoculate Zakaria from any criticism of this assessment, if anyone in the media makes a big deal out of it at all.

Zak says we will have to

Zak says we will have to join the rest of the rest of the world first if we want to lead ... eh?

Wow...what a whiz-bang.

I haven't been able to stand this leftist from day one on his Sunday appearances on the weekly Sunday round-table on This Week with Georgie...

He just is giving me more reason here...

Blather on Zak...blather on.

Oh and by the way...you in the msm never report the news in the rest of the world unless it is a leftist bent that fits your agenda...

Zimbabwe anyone...just one example...plenty of others.

Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea. ~Andrew Breitbart

they're all failures

Looks like they're trying to talk America down just like they did the economy (just before it actually caved).

"The rest of the world" has hoped for decades that America would fail in order to boost their own self image. It's kind of like "Twins" with Danny Divito being 'The rest of the world' and Arnold being America.

Uh-bama is going to do his best to help them.

I think you called it...

...Exactly right.

And when the American people decide the disaster is over, and we begin pulling ourselves out of the economic muck, guess who will be there, hands out, big smiles and patented suck-up primed?

Every one of these self-serving twits that salivated over elevating themselves by standing on the corpse of the U.S.

Says more about Zakaria

Zakaria is complaining that Obama isn't carrying out Zakaria's view of the world.

  • Obama got into office, I argue, because he successfully managed to be all things to all people. He projected himself as calm and presidential, and all these experts assumed that anyone calm and presidential would act like them.
  • Now that he's in office, he can't possibly be all things to all people. That disappoints people.
  • Soon enough, they're going to realize that there wasn't all that much there there.

One program that I like to watch is Uncommon Knowledge, a webcast from National Review. This week they have on the economist Richard Epstein. In one of the segments, Epstein mentioned something that I honestly never realized before: Obama, the "professor," (not to mention the editor of the Harvard Law Review, as we are so often reminded) has never written a scholarly article.

I never knew that. And when I think about it, it says more and more.

Right fact; wrong reason.

The mere fact that someone at Newsweek is disenchanted with Obama is, by itself, headline news of the first order.  To expect that Zakaria’s reasons are well grounded is simply asking too much of Newsweek.

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

He got nada

The truth is, el Presidente comes back from Europe without a damn thing to show for his trip, yet managed to insult previous generations of Americans and previous Presidents. In some ways, it's good that he got nothing, because many of his socialist notions that he wanted to foist onto the Euros were rejected because the Euros know better. Their leaders pay homage to Obammy so as not to upset the Euro-Bammy fan club in their own countries, but I have to wonder what they really think of this bozo.

slickwillie2001, what do you mean Obama will have nothing...

...to show for his trip?

LOL-Hell, he managed to screw us out of yet another $1 trillion while he was over there.

And he is about to screw us for another $4 trillion when his hideous budget slithers out of the conference committee any day now.

And that is not including the trillions he has screwed us out of of since Jan 20th.

Did I mention we didn't have those trillions?

I mean, we didn't even have the trillion George W. Bush screwed us out of before he left office, nor the trillions Obama has snatched from us since.

We're screwed.

This coup has gone on long enough. The time to put it down is NOW.

Dave....my mental picture

Dave....my mental picture of Obama and his thugs is a giant political vacuum cleaner hoovering up all the money out of our pockets, wallets, bank accounts, 401ks, house valuations, kids' college funds, inheritances, and investments. The theft will stretch out to people not even born yet.

My advice: don't let two coins in your pocket jingle  because the noise will attract Obama wherever he is and he'll steal them from you.

This is a full frontal attack on the middle class in the US on many different fronts--economic, personal freedom, political, etc.

What is astounding to me (still) is how many people are sleeping through all this, and think Obama has our best interests at heart.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

The "Pet President"

Doh!-bama is being treated like a "pet president." Everyone loves him, they want him around, but no one really takes him seriously; and Obama is too narcissistic, and the Media to servile, to realize it.
