CNN's Jack Cafferty: Catholic Church Must 'Drag Itself Out of the 13th Century'

Photo of Matthew Balan.

Jack Cafferty, CNN Commentator | NewsBusters.orgSeemingly not satisfied with bashing the likes of former President Bush or Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, CNN commentator Jack Cafferty took aim at a more international target on Wednesday’s Situation Room -- Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic Church. He joined PBS’s Bonnie Erbe and the Washington Post’s On Faith webpage in attacking the pontiff’s recent comment against the effectiveness of condoms in reducing the spread of HIV in Africa. Cafferty used the standard left-wing talking point that the Church is stuck in the Middle Ages: “It’s time -- it is past time for the Catholic Church to enter the 21st century, or at least try to drag itself out of the 13th century.”

After quoting the pope’s remark, Cafferty summarized the Church’s overall message of “encouraging sexual abstinence as the way to stop the disease from spreading.” He then actually blamed this message indirectly for the spread of the virus: “Obviously, the message has not delivered the desired results in Africa -- 22 million people in Africa infected with HIV. Not to mention right here in our nation’s capital -- a new report shows that three percent of Washington, DC’s residents have HIV or AIDS....One official says Washington rates are higher than parts of West Africa, and on par with Uganda and some parts of Kenya.”

Speaking of Uganda, Cafferty may not be aware of how the African country reduced its HIV transmission rate in recent years. Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni and his wife Janet advocated an abstinence program which minimized the role of condoms. As a result, the HIV transmission rate went from 21% in 1991 to 6% in 2002. Despite this success, Cafferty’s ideological peers at the UN still try to push their pro-condom, pro-“sexual freedom” agenda down the throats of Africans.

The CNN commentator also must not have questioned why the DC rate of HIV infection is so high, despite the distribution of hundreds of thousands of free condoms in the federal district by health officials. The Catholic League made a similar point about the HIV rate in New York City being three times the national average, despite similar free condom programs. That’s progress in the 21st century!

The full transcript of Cafferty’s segment, which began 12 minutes into the 6 pm Eastern hour of Wednesday’s Situation Room:

JACK CAFFERTY: It’s time -- it is past time for the Catholic Church to enter the 21st century, or at least try to drag itself out of the 13th century. On his first trip to Africa, Pope Benedict XVI says condoms are not a solution to the AIDS epidemic, but, rather, make it worse. It was the pope’s first public comments on condom use, telling reporters that AIDS, quote, ‘is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone and that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problem,’ unquote. Huh?

Since becoming pope four years ago, Benedict has stressed that the church is on the front lines of the battle against AIDS, with the Vatican encouraging sexual abstinence as the way to stop the disease from spreading. Obviously, the message has not delivered the desired results in Africa -- 22 million people in Africa infected with HIV. Not to mention right here in our nation’s capital -- a new report shows that three percent of Washington, DC’s residents have HIV or AIDS. That translates to almost 3,000 people for every 100,000 population, and is a figure that represents what health officials call a severe epidemic. One official says Washington rates are higher than parts of West Africa, and on par with Uganda and some parts of Kenya.

Well, here’s the question: the pope says condoms aren’t the solution to AIDS; they make it worse. Is he right? Go to CNN.com/caffertyfile and post a comment on my blog. Just -- it’s just breathtaking.

So let's see - did all

So let's see - did all those people who contracted AIDS in Africa/DC/elswhere get it by not being sexually active?

Can AIDS now be transmitted through non-sexual contact (drug use excluded, since condoms don't help there)?

Because that's what Cafferty's argument seems to be.  Does Cafferty blame gun control advocates for gun violence?  The logic is the same.

In addition to Uganda's success with abstinence, the Phillipines also had success with a program heavily emphasizing abstinence while nearby Thailand promoted condom use and wasn't so successful:

AIDS victims in 1987: Philippines 135 / Thailand 112

In 1991 the WHO predicted the Philippines would have 80,000 to 90,000 cases and Thailand 60,000 to 80,000 AIDS victims.

Thailand promoted the use of condoms in massive campaigns where Catholic Philippines promoted 'Abstinence' and 'Be faithful'.

The prognosis of the WHO was wrong for both countries:

1999: Philippines 1,005 / Thailand 755,000 AIDS victims

Source: British Medical Journal, volume 328, April 10th 2004

So - surprise, surprise - the Pope is right.  But for liberals, nothing - not even the threat of death via HIV/AIDS - will stand in the way of their self-assumed "right" to unfettered sexual activity.

SECULARISTS KEEP PUSHING

Churches seem to be "all the business" of the secular socialists (except Islam of course)...its so odd how institutions that are entirely freely joined...like Churches and talk radio...just get under the skin of the control-freak libs...
gee, morals matter and character counts..gee, you can't intimidate or  tax some things into dropping their principles...its soooo irritating!

Someday I would like to see a true poll (verified to the max) as to what percent of these secular dufus media types actually attend a Church 2x a month or more...think that will ever happen? NO WAY...they are a god unto themselves so they don't need to think of the afterlife, or commandments, etc...exactly who are you to mouth off? I know Jack and he does not know Jack.

If next week all Churches changed their stances to back fornication, adultery, divorce, homosexual preferences and abortion...it MAY, just MAY be enough to get some benign neglect from these shallow silly people.

Notice none of these cowards dare confront Islam? That match cannot be postponed...and it will be quite interesting...even historical.

Abstinence...

...IS the only 100% guarantee against STD's and unplanned pregnancy.

Masturbation shouldn't be shamed either for that matter...

It's not just

It's not just prevention.

Catholic teaching on sexuality is, and always has been, designed around the human dignity of each person and the fullness of that person's humanity as persons created in the image and likeness of God.

This is why the Church teaches that sex should be reserved for a loving, life-giving sacramental marriage.  It's so powerful and so sacred that it needs to be elevated as something we don't do as casually as a handshake.  The Church also believes that marital love is all-giving and "no holds barred", so to speak.  The marriage vows and sacrament expect a husband and wife committ to love and support one another fully.  This includes all aspects of them as a person...and also their fertility.

This is also why the Church teaches that artificial contraception is a violation of human dignity.  It denies a part of a person - his or her fertility - and says in the marriage "I love you, but not your fertility."

The casual treatment sex receives in today's culture denies all that and objectifies the person(s) involved in sexual acts.  Same with masturbation.

Huh?

Masterbation has saved many a marriage [especially if the man is a bit errrr 'premature']. ;)

So start your own Reformation.

Or kindly disembowel yourself on the count of three.

Whichever you chose, just STFU, and quit mixing politics with religion. Nobody gives a crap what your opinion of your own religion is.

Jack is correct

It's about time that God started changing with the times like "Old Jack" desires. What's wrong with you Lord. Why, your experience and longevity pales in comparison to "Old Jack's". Not to mention how much your moral compass is dull in comparison to "Old Jack". Yes, God certainly must change along with society.

Come to think of it, Lord, why don't we make a very special place for geniuses like "Old Jack" after they are done imparting there vast knowledge on Your Church and they pass away.

Oh, there is a place? Oh yeah, I think I've heard of this place. Kind of hot there ain't it? I think that is the hot place that "Old Al Gore" and his friends have been worrying about as well.

I don't think that you know jack, "Jack"!!!!!!!!!

Cafferty's Reformation

LOL SickofLibs!

I wholeheartedly agree..., and by the way, Jack Cafferty, we Catholics are not stuck in the 13th Century.

CATHOLIC CHURCH TEACHING HAS NOT CHANGED SINCE THE 1ST CENTURY!

UNDERSTAND?

You got it, Carlos. But

You got it, Carlos.

But unlike a certain other religion*, we don't want to live like it's a thousand years ago.

Still,  Cafferty is a self-righteous ass.

Fought with my GF over this last night.

maybe Catholics should  go back to 13th century ideals and demonstrate the difference...or even better, "catch up" with that modern peace-loving religion and start with suicide bomber nuns and Catholic school kids doing nothing but repeating "hate the infidels" lines. Maybe some sharpened crucifixes for beheadings and a Pope that routinely films himself in sneakers with automatic weapons...

THEN the Media could be "correct" for once.  But until I see this "Catholic Jihad" I'm not gonna buy this "13th century" hate speech. I DO want to see Rome and American Catholics getting together like CAIR and suing people who make these accusations, showing the Media as spreading hate based on beliefs.

My GF and I got in an argument over this. I love her dearly but her knee jerk hatred against Christianity in any formis proving very hard for me to break through. She started by saying the Pope "told Africans to die from AIDS". I told her she was full of sh*t and to look up what he really said. She grabs a provocatively parsed AP article and starts reading the cherry-picked hate spin. I told her to get the actual quotes from video, which she was "too busy" to do.

I explained that the Pope knows and can observe that AIDS cannot be stopped by a technical solution (condoms) and needs some sort of social and cultural change (abstinence). Because it's not condoms that are causing the spread, and I don't see Africa as being very Catholic (what with most of the powerful nations either following tribal superiority belifs or Islam).

I show her all sorts of stuff from here, about how the Media lies and twists for the Democratic Party and Obama-she understands the danger of Obama's Big Lie and Media complicity-but then she believes the Media every time when it hates on Christianity, Catholicism, or Republicans. Any attempt to address this cognitive dissonance means damaging domestic tranquility.

Some may say I should just "let it go". But I was raised with some Christian background, and a small dose of Faith is part of who and what I am-her hate on "christers" hurts me at a fundamental level, and I can see her "talking points" are based on what she was fed by family members who she admits to hating for other issues she was subjected to. If I could get her to at least a neutral or open minded position, maybe her own issues would be easier for her to resolve as well as making it so I could attend church with friends every now and then without derision.

Sure Jack, because we all

Sure Jack, because we all know that morality is relative to time and that everything that was once considered wrong, like stealing, lying and murder, will eventually become OK, right?

Jack is, of course

Jack is, of course, the moral yardstick by which we should all be measured.

Jack don't know Jack!  Jack

Jack don't know Jack!  Jack "needs to drag" himself to AA.

I am waiting, with baited

I am waiting, with baited breath of course, for this loon to proclaim that Islam needs to 'drag itself out of the 7th century". You think I might be waiting for a while?

Exactly!

What MrSnuggles said!  Easy to bash a Christian church when there is no fear of retribution, isn't it Jackie?

Doesn't know what he is talking about

A couple of observations about Jack from a non-Catholic:

--Jack apparently has not read about the Vatican II Council.  So, though I am Reformation-based Protestant, it should be pretty obvious that the Roman Catholic Church is not interested in merely sticking to the traditions of bygone centuries for the sake of doing so.  Morality is another issue entirely different matter.  It logically makes sense that if God has standards (and He does), then He does not change his mind on what is right and wrong based on the shifting sands of immoral people.  Entirely lost on Jack is that if churches give into the jello moral expressions of our day, then why come to church?  I can stay at home, and decide to do as I please.

--Secondly, Jack apparently knows nothing about the sexual mores of the African sub-continent.  I don't want to gross anyone out, so I will leave out the details.  Simply put, African men will by and large refuse to use condoms.  If Jack would have read and processed what is practiced on the anatomy of soon-to-be adolescent girls in some African countries, he would realize that the Western throwing of condoms at the sexually active might not work there.    We are dealing with some different cultures.  What a shamefully ill-prepared news anchor by the name of Jack Chafferty!

I suppose Jackie Boy plans

I suppose Jackie Boy plans to drag the Catholic Church "out of the 13th Century" like he drags bicycles through New York City...with a few belts of Old Crow and a car.

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." -Winston Churchill

Just a couple of observations:

Everything that these commentators advocate has been tried by other religions.  The Anglican Communion is very modern.  It is also in compete disarray, losing membership and is nearly irrelevant.  I'm sorry if this doesn't sound very ecumenical, but the only news I've heard from Episcopalians is about Gene Robinson, the schism his ordination spawned and the lawsuits over who own the church property now that schism is inevitable.

Also, what purpose do these commentators have in mind for the Church?  Are they really concerned for Her well-being?  I don't think so.  It sounds more like Cafferty, Erbe, et al are just ticked off that anybody could have the audacity to disagree with their discredited social theories.

I wished Jack would just

I wished Jack would just make an exit from the msm...and join the 21st century in the real world too...one way or the other.

One can dream.

What else?

One official says Washington rates are higher than parts of West Africa, and on par with Uganda and some parts of Kenya

I'm thinking the populations of those places share something else in common, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

 that's because the finger

that's because the finger is not part of the problem...

(pause)  A-S-S.  Can you hear me okay?  No, I'm not yelling, and I don't see any pink elephants on my end.  Yeah, okay then.  Sure, you too.  Thanks for listening."

Jack, you and the rest of the MSM needs to pull yourselves out of the 60's. You no longer have a monopoly on information, so stop acting like you do. You're less important than the Catholic Church, it's about time you realize it. After you do, that jealousy you feel will begin to subside.

Jack's Coming Out

Cafferty is now totally out of the closet as a far-left liberal; feeling his oats, as it were, now that Dear Leader is firmly in place at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.  He's now empowered to take on anyone and everyone - including the Pope - just as Dear Leader is about to do on a wide variety of issues critical to us all.  The man who refers to former President Bush as a "drunk", should certainly know one when he sees one and has NO business telling anyone anything.  His liver should take care of the problem.  Now, let's kill dem babies, Jack!

Golden Eagle In Texas

Wow.  I just read through

Wow.  I just read through the comments on Cafferty's blog for this entry.  I can only conclude that his readers are among the most ignorant/misinformed people on the planet.  They don't understand even the basic facts:

- Abstinence works every time it's used, both for contraception and prevention of STDs.

- Latex is incapable of containing particles the size of HIV.

- Condoms are designed to prevent pregnancy, not STDs.

Anyone who understands the basics knows that using a latex condom to stop the spread of HIV is like holding a screen door over your head to stop the rain.

Cafferty is the only one stuck in the past....

....oh wait, there's those dang jihadists, too...but stuck back in the 7th century.

Go ahead Jack-Remove all Doubt

Jack is frighteningly ignorant.   I think he just wants his name in the Press?  Why else would he be making such a jerk out of himself?

I'd love to hear him say such things about radical Islam.  Was there a century when beheadings were in vogue?  My guess is he'll remain silent - to speak out would take courage.

I think this old geezer

I think this old geezer means why doesn't the Catholic Church chuck God's truth, and that's so he doesn't have to confess his past, if not current, perverse behaviors.  It all comes down to personal irresponsible behavior and trying to scapegoat the Church for sticking to its Holy Spirit-driven truth.

I don't get this...why

I don't get this...why should anyone but Roman Catholics care what the Pope says?

Are most Africans Roman Catholic now?

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

The cold hard truth...

In continuing to propagate the idea that abstinence is out dated and doesn't prevent the spread of HIV and that the only way to prevent HIV is through the use of condoms, Jack Cafferty and his liberal cohorts are inadvertently supporting the awful circumstances that come with unchecked sexual deviancy in Africa. I thought it was a known fact that in several areas of Africa grown men have been known to rape children because of the belief that sex with a virgin will cure them of HIV/AIDS. And Jack Cafferty thinks telling them to use a condom is going to make a difference? Since HIV can be trasmitted through oral sex and intercourse, the only 100% accurate way to prevent the spread of AIDS through sexual activity is abstinence.

Pope Benedict is not a political leader, he is the moral shepherd of the Catholic Church. The teachings of the Catholic Church are not in place to be popular with people who have no morals. The teachings are for social justice, personal accountability, to reinforce the importance of human dignity and in doing so make people understand and follow Jesus' golden rule, to love your neighbor as yourself and to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

The downfall to humanity is our inability to check our selfish compulsions. I thank God for being a part of a church that recognizes this fact and offers guidance.
