Joe Johns, CNN Correspondent | NewsBusters.orgCNN correspondent Joe Johns’ report on Monday’s American Morning heaped praise upon Sidwell Friends School, the new school for the Obama daughters. Johns read from one of the school’s own mission statements about its “Quaker values” and later described how President-Elect Obama apparently “often seems in tune with Quaker principles -- seeking consensus with others; talking rather than fighting with opponents; and, at least in the case of Iraq, if not Afghanistan, opposing war even when the majority supports it.” The correspondent also featured three clips from The Washington Post’s Sally Quinn, who gushed over school: “Sidwell is a happy school....it can be a really magical place.”

Johns began introducing Sidwell Friends as “among the elite private schools in Washington,” and set the laudatory tone of the report by playing the first clip from Quinn, who described the school as “very much about peace and community” and that it’s “very progressive.” He continued by highlighting how “the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now.”

After reading an excerpt from Sidwell Friends’ “Quaker values” statement, the correspondent played a clip from Bo Lauder, the principal of Friends Seminary, another elite Quaker school in New York City. Mr. Lauder, in true “hope and change” fashion, emphasized that “[w]ith Obama’s position on war, and his own commitment to hope and to the future, I think that he feels probably that the school will equip his children well for bringing about a better world.” Johns continued in this vein with his statement on how Obama “seems in tune with Quaker principles.”

Sally Quinn, Washington Post journalist | NewsBusters.orgThe report concluded with two clips from Quinn. She gave a bit of history on the children of presidents and vice-presidents who went to Sidwell Friends in the first clip, and then went over-the-top about how great the school was in the second: “Sidwell is a happy school. I think the children who go there are children who really feel good about themselves at the end of the day. They’re happy children. It’s -- it can be a really magical place.”

The full transcript of Joe Johns’ report, which began 21 minutes into the 6 am Eastern hour of Monday’s American Morning:

ROB MARCIANO: It’s the first day at a new school for the Obama girls. The soon-to-be First Daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, start classes at Sidwell Friends. CNN’s Joe Johns has a closer look at the Washington private school that’s no secret to students with Secret Service in tow.

JOE JOHNS (voice-over): Sidwell Friends, founded in 1883 by a Quaker teacher, is among the elite private schools in Washington.

SALLY QUINN, THE WASHINGTON POST: Sidwell Friends is a Quaker school, first of all, and it’s really infused with Quaker values. It’s very much about peace and community. It’s very progressive. It’s about 40 percent minority.

JOHNS: Michelle Obama’s spokesperson says a number of great schools were considered. In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now. So what’s so special about Sidwell? There is the philosophy. Sidwell says its students and faculty are on a search for truth and the school follows a Quaker belief ‘that of God in each of us inspires everything we do, inspires us to show kindness and respect toward one another, and apply our talents and service to others.’

BO LAUDER, PRINCIPAL, FRIENDS SEMINARY: I think it’s a great fit for the Obama family because the school is a very rigorous academic place that places a lot of value on intellectual inquiry. With Obama’s position on war, and his own commitment to hope and to the future, I think that he feels probably that the school will equip his children well for bringing about a better world.

JOHNS: And Obama often seems in tune with Quaker principles -- seeking consensus with others; talking rather than fighting with opponents; and, at least in the case of Iraq, if not Afghanistan, opposing war even when the majority supports it. The Obama girls aren’t the only First Family children who have opted for Sidwell.

QUINN: Chelsea Clinton went there. Al Gore -- young Al Gore went there. The Nixon girls went there. Teddy Roosevelt’s children went there. The Biden grandchildren go there. They’re very, very good about security. They understand about that, and they also understand about children who are in the public eye a lot.

JOHNS: Sidwell isn’t cheap. For the lower school, where Sasha will attend second grade, tuition is nearly $29,000, and more for the middle school, where Malia will be in fifth grade. But Sidwell can afford to ask top dollar.

QUINN: Sidwell is a happy school. I think the children who go there are children who really feel good about themselves at the end of the day. They’re happy children. It’s -- it can be a really magical place.

JOHNS (on-camera): And by the time the president-elect takes the oath of office, the Obama girls will have two weeks of Washington schooling under their belts. So today, in a way, they’re getting a head start on their dad. Rob and Kiran?

CHETRY: Joe Johns, thanks.

What do the Quakers believe

What do the Quakers believe about abortion and homosexuality?

YOU CAN KEEP "THE CHANGE" PALIN 2012

I don't think they have a

I don't think they have a problem with either.

My children's grandparent's

My children's grandparent's are Amish, so I would have to say uh, they're not down with that. And I'm wondering about this "magical" school. What exactly goes on there?  It sounds more like a liberal playground than Quaker, to me.

Yeah...magical

I would say magical is more Harry Potter than Sidwell.

I should have done a

I should have done a little research before asking the question. Seems Quakers have no creed so it is sitituational ethics that they ascribe to. Abortion is OK when it is for the health of the mother. (typical lib answer.) Since God created everyone then he created the homosexual.

YOU CAN KEEP "THE CHANGE" PALIN 2012

Not to assert that it is

Not to assert that it is indeed *fact* that God created the homosexual, but if it came to be that indeed he had, and that he had no qualms about a moral homosexual, how would that make you feel?

Again, just curious and I think such self evaluation of opinion is not only informative and helpful for progress, but also can be quite fun to see just how much of our own biases bleed into such things as our religious dogma and other aspects of our lives that we ascribe to.

The people should not fear their Government,

The Government should fear the people.

Ashlee

Cisgendered? Is that what the gender ambivalent are calling normal people now?

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.

Where was all the gushing

Where was all the gushing over Sidwell Friends and how "magical" it was when Chelsea Clinton or Al Gore Jr. attended there?

Only now that The Obama's children are going to be there, now suddenly they are all agog over the magic of it all.

And shouldn't all kids have a school where they feel good about themselves at the end of the day? Or is that reserved for the "chosen" ones?

Sidwell Alumni

"Where was all the gushing over Sidwell Friends and how "magical" it was when Chelsea Clinton or Al Gore Jr. attended there?"

But looked how both of them turned out.  One doesn't have a discernible job and the other got arrested for drug possession.  Fine upstanding alumni!

MB, No. Only special

MB,

No. Only special children are allowed to feel good about themselves at the end of the day. Every other kid is supposed to feel like horse squeeze. There's a article at "Daily Beast" that's all about how the parents in DC are working to get their kids hooked up with the Obama kids. It's pretty funny. I normally am not a fan of DB, but they also have a really good one on the inauguration, about how hellish it is going to be, how much the balls suck, etc. It is worth reading, picturing the idiots who have spent out $300,000 for tix.

Clinton to Obama: Quit

Clinton to Obama: Quit copying me!

Is this guy even incapable of an original thought? With all the criticism lately re: Clinton Administration Part II (latest: Leon E. Panetta, CIA Director), you'd think at least they might have picked a different equally-rated school just for appearances.

And shouldn't all kids have

And shouldn't all kids have a school where they feel good about themselves at the end of the day? Or is that reserved for the "chosen" ones?

Nope, just for the straight, cisgendered children who fit in.  Let's face it, bullies will always be around, but its alarming how much *less* a problem many people have with bullying someone because of orientation or gender identity, yet will get all up in arms if someone is picked on for being fat, ugly, or other juvenile, shallow ways of measuring one's worth.

I'm not saying liberals have it right, they don't, but the many who would view this as selective are quite hypocritical. (and it is, an exclusionary institution which is only accessible to those of privledge, the same set up liberals decry day in and day out)

Basically, I found that last statement to be quite accurate, but also conversely in our own ideas of a proper school as well.  Afterall, while I doubt anyone would condone violence to be brought onto another for their orientation or identity, those voices of outrage certainly do die down when it comes to a case of protecting a homosexual or transgendered youth from torment from their peers.

The people should not fear their Government,

The Government should fear the people.

Magical Place

"Sidwell is a happy school....it can be a really magical place."

Sidwell, much like Hogwarts, has a special entrance.  Just look for Gate 13 1/3 at DC's Union Station.

Once you're at Sidwell's, your parents will be able to communicate with you by owl, because Al Gore enviro-whacko ain't gonna let anyone travel by plane, train or automobile.

Headmaster Demodore will be guiding your learning for the next few years.

 NOw this is the same

NOw this is the same Barack H-word Obama who said we have the best pubic schools in the universe.

Yet his kids go to a private school, even here in Chicago they went to private school.

this guy is an ass, and it's sad that 52-53% of voters fell for it, thanks MSM

and on a different note

And we all remember THIS nugget of goodness,  from his idiot wife.

"You're getting $600," she told an audience of mostly African-American women here. "What can you do with that? Not to be ungrateful or anything. But maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn't pay down every bill every month."

"Barack's approach is that the short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good," she continued. "And it may even feel good that first month when you get that check. And then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings"

And today I read THIS

"Besides $500 tax cuts for most workers and $1,000 for couples...",

I got a $1200 check for being married from Bush....so ......what now

F*** Obama

F*** his bitch of a wife

and now Bill "hey i'm REALLY hispanic, really" Ricardson is in a pay-to-play scandel.

every thing this guy touches turns to sh!t

I bet that is where Al Gore

I bet that is where Al Gore Jr. got his "Magical" pills and Weed.

He was a good boy though, since he was driving his "Highbrid" Car.

Why are they allowed to use "Magical" when they bash Rush for

Barrack the Magic Negro?

Oh Yeah that's right it is the Negro word we cannot say, but it is ok for Harriet Reid to tell Blago not to send any Negro's to the senate for confirmation.  Along with Bobby Rush stating that BHO's seat should be a Negro seat.

For a party who is supposed to be color blind they sure do the talking but not the walking.

For a party who is supposed

For a party who is supposed to be color blind they sure do the talking but not the walking.

They don't even do the talking.

That's all they can talk about is race. They certainly don't have a "color-blind" mentality when they say Burris should be seated because they need a black Senator.

Clubchamp

I was thinking the same thing, on both issues! I have to wonder of the school is a "puff the magic dragon" kind of magical, or something else. And saying magic and Obama might just remind them of the MN song. Which they are all still too stupid to figure out was a spoof on Sharpton, not Obama. Obama was incidental to the whole thing. Typical, they can be as racist and biased as they want, but when they think a Conservative is, look out. It doesn't really matter what anything means, it only matters what they think! Or don't think, whatever the case may be. No one seems to remember all the racist things Sharpton has said over the years, I wonder why?

On one hand, I don't blame

On one hand, I don't blame the Obamas for sending their children to a private school.  DC schools are lousy, thanks to liberal politics and the NEA.  However, I agree that Barack and Michelle are complete hypocrites for saying one thing and doing another.  Textbook elitism, where what's good for you and I, isn't good enough for them.  Once again, they not only get a free pass from the media, but loads of support.  Gag!

"Magical school" alum

would be become magical - so where's the outrage? No bias reporting here.

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

Holy cow

At least on the airlines they still give you BARF BAGS.......excuse me...I think i have to go throwup again...agggggggghhhhhhhhhhh

Sidwell

Might be interesting to know the black/white ratio of students at Sidwell. Just asking.

 Magical like, oh I don't

 Magical like, oh I don't know...Camelot?

Is Merlin going to be their science teacher or something?

BTW, I have taught in a private school.  Same teachers as in public schools.  Some private schools are good, some are bad and the rip-off factor is much higher in private because of lack of any oversight and there are no standards other than what they chose to set (or actually, pretend they have set).  My wife worked in another...they weren't students-they were clients.  Very difficult to discipline or fail, because like any business, less clients=less $.

To me, education is not the best place to model capitalism.

Kids who have parents who care about how they behave and their education would do well in most any school.  The public ones?  Get rid of the juvenile delinquents and quit being afraid to 'stigmatize' children by letting them fail when they deserve it...and allow them to succeed rather than giving success to them.

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Well put. I know we looked

Well put. I know we looked at a lot of private schools, and some were a joke, except the price tag wasn't funny.

I can't wait for the school voucher issue to come back around.

Of course, I realize that the NEA dog-washers have increased their grip on congress and also have managed to win the White House, which means its chances of passage are zilch.

But, given the widespread support for vouchers, especially among black parents, it is going to be big fun to watch how the MSM twists itself into pretzels in helping their dem charges fend it off.

I hope the repubs jump up and raise hell, especially in light of the Obamas packing their offspring off to a private school.

As of today, there are 2

As of today, there are 2 black students...

Actually, I got curious and looked it up.  They have fewer black students than the Maryland state average (17% vs. 20%), and more Asian-Pacific students than the state average (9% vs. 4%).   Even though they tout "diversity" throughout their web site (to the point of nausea, in fact), they apparently are contributing to the problem, not solving it.  Oh, well.  All will be miraculously fixed now that The Bama's in town.
