CNN’s Martin and Toobin Come Out Hard Against Palin After Speech

Photo of Matthew Balan.

Minutes after Republican vice-presidential pick Sarah Palin finished her speech on Wednesday night, CNN’s Roland Martin and Jeffrey Toobin went on the offensive against the Alaska governor. Co-host Anderson Cooper first asked Martin for his reaction. He first stated that "she gave a solid speech" and then focused on Palin’s dig at Barack Obama being a community organizer in Chicago: "...[S]he mocked community organizers, and this audience laughed at them. Don't be surprised if Obama and Biden says, you know what, it's community organizers who are keeping people from losing their homes in [the] subprime crisis.... It's community organizers who are the ones trying to save your job. They're going to say the GOP does not give a flip about community organizers -- it means they don't care about you...."

Two minutes later, co-host Wolf Blitzer went to Toobin for his reaction. The senior legal analyst for CNN first complimented Palin: "Well, let's just start with an obvious point that I don't think anyone has made yet. This speech was a heck of a lot better than Joe Biden's speech. I mean, it just was much more dramatic, much more interesting, much more entertaining." He then continued with a more blunt analysis of the speech: "But it was also, I thought, very smug, very sarcastic, very cutting. And you know what? The Republicans had been trying to portray her as a victim for the last couple days. Well, she's not going to be a victim anymore. She's going to be a target..." As if she hasn’t been a target since John McCain announced her as his running mate?

Jeffrey Toobin, CNN Senior Political Analyst | NewsBusters.orgToobin then tried to "fact check" Palin’s stances on two issues: "...[L]et's start with some fact checking of some of the things she said in that speech, starting with the 'Bridge to Nowhere,' where she bragged about her efforts to cut pork barrel spending -- a project that, it turns out, she was in support of. Now, you know, that didn't -- that wasn't raised in the speech." Yes, Palin did support the proposed bridge between the town of Ketchikan in Alaska and Gravina Island when she campaigned for governor in 2006, but Toobin didn’t mention the fact that she later cancelled the project in September 2007.

The senior legal analyst continued on the issue of taxes, and mouthed the Obama campaign’s talking points: "She talks about taxes. You know, Barack Obama's proposal will cut taxes for 80% of the American people and raise taxes on people making more than $250,000 a year. Those kind of things, I think, are appropriate to bring out at this point because she is no shrinking violet. She's no victim. She is a tough, effective pol, and, you know, game on." The "game on" slogan was also earlier used by Martin during his response to Palin’s speech. CNN’s senior political analyst Gloria Borger then added that she more or less agreed with Martin and Toobin’s points about the Democrats’ possible response to Palin.

The transcript of Martin and Toobin’s responses to Palin’s speech, which aired at 48 and 52 minutes into the 11 pm Eastern hour of CNN’s coverage of the Republican convention:

ANDERSON COOPER: Roland Martin?

ROLAND MARTIN: Yeah Anderson, first of all, she gave a solid speech, and look, same thing I said about -- last week about Senator Barack Obama to John McCain -- game on. Same thing, she basically threw down the gauntlet tonight. Now, all this talk about whether or not Joe Biden is going to be able to dance around the whole issue and going after her -- you know what, forget all of that. I expect the Democrats to go hard after her, hard after John McCain. When you listen to something -- talk about the mocking, those kind of things like that. But not only that -- my parents are watching, Reginald and Emelda Martin in Houston, Texas. And let me tell you something, they were community organizers, and this audience here -- she mocked community organizers, and this audience laughed at them. Don't be surprised if Obama and Biden says, you know what, it's community organizers who are keeping people from losing their homes in [the] subprime crisis. It's community organizers who are keeping people from -- having their lights turned on [sic]. It's community organizers who are the ones trying to save your job. They're going to say the GOP does not give a flip about community organizers -- it means they don't care about you. Watch them come out and hit them hard on that and say, you want to talk about small town values? Don't you dare criticize the people who fight for community people who have community issues. Expect them to come down tomorrow.

-11:52 pm EDT

WOLF BLITZER: All right. We're going to go down to the floor and check in with our reporters. But I want Jeffrey Toobin to weigh in. I know you've been itching to comment on what we heard tonight. Jeff, tell the viewers what you think.

JEFFREY TOOBIN: Well, let's just start with an obvious point that I don't think anyone has made yet. This speech was a heck of a lot better than Joe Biden's speech. I mean, it just was much more dramatic, much more interesting, much more entertaining. But it was also, I thought, very smug, very sarcastic, very cutting. And you know what? The Republicans had been trying to portray her as a victim for the last couple days. Well, she's not going to be a victim anymore. She's going to be a target, and let's start with some fact checking of some of the things she said in that speech, starting with the 'Bridge to Nowhere,' where she bragged about her efforts to cut pork barrel spending -- a project that, it turns out, she was in support of. Now, you know, that didn't -- that wasn't raised in the speech. She talks about taxes. You know, Barack Obama's proposal will cut taxes for 80% of the American people and raise taxes on people making more than $250,000 a year. Those kind of things, I think, are appropriate to bring out at this point because she is no shrinking violet. She's no victim. She is a tough, effective pol, and, you know, game on.

BORGER: The speech tonight -- the Democrats were kind of holding back on talking about Sarah Palin. They didn't want to kind of get in the way of the story. They thought -- they were, they were very nervous about attacking a woman. They didn't know what to do. I think after tonight's speech, they're not going to be so shy, because Sarah Palin has shown herself to be a very tough adversary, and I think the gloves are going to come off about her on the very issues that Jeff Toobin is talking about.

Roland Martin is fishin.'

Again.

LOL-Sorry, but every time I hear that name.....

John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, as his running
mate finally gave Republicans a reason to vote for him -- a reason,
that is, other than B. Hussein Obama.-
Ann Coulter

Toobin, Martin are afraid of Sarah Palin

These lefty girly boys are terrified of a strong woman as they can not deal with women like that and Toobin just exposes what a criminally abusive type he is toward women in his phraseology in the use of targetting a strong woman who will not be a victim.

For the female nags, Sarah Palin is what they can not be. Content with herself and people like her.

The worst enemy of a liberal is their own lack of soul and I just love it that Sarah Palin is stuck in their craw, Rush Limbaugh is a big festering Conservative log in their empty hearts and all of this means more Sarah so more Americans will adore her.

Hmm....

Someone who shall remain nameless here put up a post that was pretty vitriolic, with lots of debunked and unlinked Kos-type charges against Palin. Apparently, that post was pulled while I was slaving over a hot keyboard on a reply.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't consider the post any more "over the top" than many I've seen here. I feel we should (generally) let the Obamabots speak, they're easily hung with their own petards.

Clearly, abusive posts should be moderated, but I don't feel this missing post actually crossed that line. Skated up to it, sure, and it's really the moderators call. But, I'd rather this forum stayed as open as possible.

After all, [paraphrasing] "I don't agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Thank you

A Voice from Heaven....

(Fox News) The Pearly Gates--September 3, 2008

Updated 4 hrs. ago.....

Harry Caray, interviewed by DNCTV Anchor Rosie O'Donnell tonight from his heavenly mansion inside the Pearly Gates had this to say of Sarah Palin's speech at the Republican National Convention:

"THERE'S A DRIIIIVE....WAAAAAY BACK.....IT MIIIIGHT BE....IT COOOOULD BEEEEE............

IT ISSSSSSSSSS.....A HOME RUN!!!!!!!

HOLY COW!!!!!"

Where Is the Democrat Label?

CNN introduces Jeffrey Toobin as their senior legal analyst. But he is without question a partisan liberal Democrat.

To be fair and for full disclosure CNN should apend the liberal and/or Democrat to his senior legal analyst title when introducing him.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
The liberal media continues to sacrifice ethics and morals for the greater cause: This time for the Election of a Democrat to the Presidency of the United States.

Toobin is dishonest

Whenver you need DNC talking points on any issue, all you need to do is tune in to Jeffrey Toobin.

Regarding the bridge to nowhere, Toobin was flat out dishonest last night.  Yes Palin supported it at first (how many governors say no to federal money?) but she did eventually kill it off for good.

If Toobin was anything other than a DNC shill, he would of mentioned that.

Wow the two shills are whineing

No surprise with those two.Obama should be paying them for all their work for him.

Maybe he already is (under

Maybe he already is (under the table, of course)!

Tim

Your probably right.

if you can't stand the heat...

the mayor/community organizer line: That line was in the speech because the Obama campaign was belittling Gov. Palin's previous position as a small-town mayor and the experience she collected by being the mayor.

CNN is all red mist. In

CNN is all red mist.

In other words, all sploded.

Just look at their PacemakerTicker. Not good.

NB and the MRC are putting together a comparison of coverage between tonight and the night of  Robinette "in senate since Nixon" Bidens speech right?

Biden attack dog's the R prez nominee, Palin attack dog's the D prez nominee. This is how it works and they know it.

So an open note to MSM:

Please don't go feigning fainting spells with hankies in hand as if Palin or Romney or Guliani or anyone else launched some kind of "ATTACK"

I've read the book of my login name plus Saul Alinsky and others.

We know how this works and many are catching on.

I thought the media was

I thought the media was dieing for some "red meat"?

I thought they said there was way too little of it in the conventions....???.....

Funny you say red meat. I

Funny you say red meat. I was hearing the speeches FDR era style, on the radio.

The first report on local AM KFWB all news station (cbs owned),started off with a shocked "wow a lot of red meat there"

I smiled and said here we go with the feigning fainting with the vapors and hankies.

The SarahCuda took the memes the media has tried to sell on

her for the past week and shoved them straight down their smarmy throats.  I've pushed Palin for a year for this position and think very highly of her, but I was absolutely aghast at what an effective superstar she has turned out to be.  And it cost me another hundred bucks, sent to the McCain/Palin campaign. Darn it.

Palin's speech was

Palin's speech was terrific.  She is, as she tells it, "a pit bull with lipstick!"  I say that of her with pride.  She knocked that speech out of the convention center.  Note, these two liberals from CNN had to admit as much.

There were many sateric and very funny barbs sent bambi's way, but let's take up the point on taxes.  She pointed out that it's not just the federal income taxes, but it's payroll, dividend, capital gains, death and who knows what else before he's through taxex all when taxes are already too high and when they will hurt this economy most when it is recovering from a down tuirn.  bambi is the Herbert Hoover of our time - Hoover raised taxes from 25% to 63% right as the downturn of his day began that later become a depression in part because of his policies.

We don't want more taxes never mind who has to pay them.  We want less taxes and less government.  Senator McCain may not be the conservative that we hoped for, but Palin certainly is.  I can vote for this ticket.  I hope that all of you and the American people can too!  .

Oh no, McCain has lost the

Oh no, McCain has lost the all important Community Orginizer vote! Call the election now! Let's get Obama sworn in!

In other news, I'll take the "parents with disabled children" vote over the "community orginizer vote" (they keep people in their houses? Really? I didn't know community orginizers paid peoples mortgages.) any day of the week.

roland martins

rants of community organizers is just funny as hell. No one gives a damn about community organizers. the only comminities which use them are so deep in the gutter they cannot get out on their own. Roland Martin then highlights them.

I've seen many a time Obama's home area of Chicago, and its quite a dump..

Look folk's,that sounds

Look folk's,that sounds like thug talk to me.Is that not intemadation?A bunch of Stallinist.Put a stop to it now.

Well, I think Gov.Palin just put a stop to it.

The Media at Work

The media has been doing this the whole election cycle.

They have consistently run defense for the Dems and part of that defense has been going on the offense against critics of that party or Obama.

They praise and play up in a positive manner anything from the Dems that might win over voters.

And they do their best to bury items that could hurt the Dem chances of winning the White House.

And they don't even wait for cues from the Obama-Dem camp on how to effectively whitle the GOP down --- they are so in tune with the Dem message, they go on the attack immediately.

It is remarkably disgusting.....

One of the guys quoted

One of the guys quoted above said that "It's on" or "game on" - which of course makes him look like a jackass because everybody knows how viscious the attacks on Palin have been from the word "go" ---

--- but my first reaction at the end of Palin's speech was, "The media had better watch out - but they won't...."

By which I meant ---- now that the observant public has had their first big glimpse of this woman -----

---- I do not believe --- they are going to put up with the horrific way the media has been behaving these last several days.

The American public has known for some time the media is in the tank for Obama. They have known for a long time that the media is overwhelmingly on the side of the liberals and Democrat party. ---- and they have been voicing their concerns about this - quietly through their pocketbooks and viewing habits.

But, these rabid attacks on Palin are different -- and now that they have a picture of the woman herself --- I don't think the public is going to sit quietly at home trying to ignore the media bias.

I have a feeling -- a hunch --- when (not if) the press keeps attacking Palin as they have so far in the coming days, the American audience is going to find ways to give them a stinging rebuke.

I'd like to see if the switchboards and mailrooms of the media orgs start getting bombarded. I expect we might see more activity on talk radio - with more regular people - not regular listeners - going over to talk radio as an effort to find any outlet to voice displeasure at what the media is doing to the McCain campaign.

In short, attacking Palin as a mother, as someone who dared give birth to a child with down's syndrome, as the irresponsible mother of a teen who got knocked up, as a small town bumpkin mayor ---- all these items the media has been using --- are not how average Americans veiw things --- and I think the attacks coupled with the effectiveness of Palin's speech ----- are going to get some of those average Americans pissed off enough to speak out themselves....

I still don't know exactly...

...what a "community organizer" is. Great fun has been made of this for many months now, and I think it's hurt Obama's image.

Why hasn't their camp ever stood up and defined what he did in that position? It would be so easy.

Perhaps it is because what a "community organizer" does is nothing more than race-hustling, inflaming racial prejudices in order to "Mau-Mau the Flakcatchers", a la Jackson and Sharpton, who are the major leaguers in the field. I have a feeling that if a white "community organizer" did the exact same things on behalf of the white community, they would accuse him of being a member of the KKK, and probably rightly so.

What's good for the goose...

MSM all style, no substance

Most of the coverage I saw from the MSM was all about the delivery of the speech and didn't really analyze the content (unless it was about themselves, the media).
