ABCNews.com: Catholic Diocese ‘Cracks Down’ By Denying Movie Filming?

ABCNews.com, reporting on the Catholic Diocese of Rome refusing permission to Ron Howard’s plans to film the movie prequel to Dan Brown’s "The DaVinci Code" in two historic churches, used loaded wording in the headline: "Church Cracks Down on New ‘Da Vinci’ Film."

The lead for the report, written by Phoebe Natanson and Luchina Fisher, also used similar imagery to describe the Catholic Church’s refusal: "Once again, the Catholic Church is coming down hard on writer Dan Brown, the author of ‘The Da Vinci Code.’ The producers of Brown's latest thriller to be made into a film, ‘Angels and Demons,’ have been banned from filming key scenes inside any church in Rome, on the grounds that the book is "an offense against God," according to a church spokesman.

Speaking of "coming down hard," wasn’t Brown doing just that in "The Da Vinci Code" by depicting the Catholic Church as a nefarious organization?

When one thinks of "crackdowns," the image that usually comes to mind is an oppressive regime suppressing demonstrations, such as the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, or the People’s Liberation Army’s massacre of student protesters in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Instead, ABC News saw fit to use it to describe the Catholic Church’s perfectly legitimate authority to deny the use of its facilities.

The local Catholic authorities had refused the film makers permission last year in 2007, but that detail wasn’t revealed until Monday, when "Sorrisi e Canzoni TV," an entertainment magazine in Italy, printed an interview with Monsignor Marco Fibbi, spokesman for the Diocese of Rome.

Later in the report, Opus Dei, a devout Catholic organization, is described as "conservative." The report also quotes extensively from Bill Donohue and his Catholic League, who had protested both "The Da Vinci Code" novel and movie. Interestingly enough, neither Donohue nor the Catholic League are labeled as "conservative" as they often are.

ABC News is not alone in using loaded terms in covering the Catholic Church. In May 2008, the AP described the Church as "slamming the door on attempts by women to become priests." Of course, one shouldn’t forget how the media has used terms such as "God’s Rottweiler" and "hard liner" when Pope Benedict XVI visited the United States in April.

When "The DaVinci Code" book came out in 2003 and the film adaptation came out in 2006, ABC News was among the many mainstream media outlets hyping the Dan Brown production, as MRC’s 2006 Special Report, "The Trashing of Christ," by Tim Graham demonstrated. Anchor Elizabeth Vargas hosted an hour-long "Primetime" special in November 2003, which as Graham put it, "softly recounted the Code’s ‘legends’ without much opposition." ABC News also devoted 26 segments to "The Da Vinci Code" movie before and during its release in 2006.

 The hubris of Hollywood

The hubris of Hollywood never ends does it? Howard actually believes he has a right to film on private property and the owners are "mean" for not letting him. Tough! Opie, you'll have to fake some more "news" to get your movie completed.

What is it with these

What is it with these people...they want to film a picture about trashing the church and then whine when they can't film in the church. Stupidity knows no bounds, people. Satan can try but he will never destroy the church.

"There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we can not resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary." -Sister Lucia

It may have happened, but I

It may have happened, but I haven't read any of this whining you speak of.

As for cracking down, I took it as a reference to the Catholic Church taking a stand where it can to voice opposition and thwart filming of these movies.

Looking forward to this movie, though. Thought this book was a lot of fun to read. I'm sure when the movie comes out we'll have another spirited round of "Dan Brown mocks Catholicism."

bal, <sigh>

It takes a lot of chutzpah to ask to film a Catholic-bashing movie in the seat of Catholicism. What made them think the Church would help in their own crucifixion?

I agree with you: the term "takes a stand" is much less loaded than "cracks down." Too bad ABC didn't think of it.

Rest assured, when this movie comes out, it will be another round of Dan Brown mocking and insulting Catholicism. Sorry if people objecting to that bothers you.

It doesn't bother me, per

It doesn't bother me, per se. I don't think it's an important fight for the church, as I don't think the book is bashing all of Catholicism.

because you are not Catholic balboa

Catholics know whether it is or not

Having read both Angels &

Having read both Angels & Demons and Da Vinci Code, it is pretty clear that Dan Brown has it out for Catholicism.  He's not one who is on the inside crying for reform (as in the case of the pedophile priests), but is an outsider attacking what he sees as a sinister organization with outdated beliefs.

I've read "The DaVinci Code"

I've read "The DaVinci Code" myself, and you're absolutely right. As a history major, I picked up historical details that Dan Brown got completely wrong as well!

I've got to admit that I

I've got to admit that I loved both of those books in terms of the quality of the writing and the suspense that he's able to create.  He's a gifted writer and I'm looking forward to his next book which, thankfully, isn't about the Catholic Church as far as I know - it's about the Masons, a religion I admittedly do not know a lot about.  Hopefully what he writes on this will be more accurate than his other books, but just as good!

That's why it's in the

That's why it's in the Fiction aisle.

Sinister? I can see more

Sinister? I can see more opposition to the characterization of Opus Dei in DaVinci Code, but in A&D, the church is a victim. The villain wants to destroy the church, and the hero saves the day.

I think DD was saying Brown

I think DD was saying Brown sees the Church as "sinister."

"I don't think the book is

"I don't think the book is bashing all of Catholicism."

Nope, just the Roman version. He leaves the Orthodox strains out of it, for some reason.

And it's not the Church doing the fighting. They merely refused to allow their holy places to be used to "fictionalize" slander against them. It's your run-of-the-mill Catholics who have a problem with Brown's "fiction" regarding their religion.

Wonder why they don't "fictionalize" "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion?" How about a movie version of "The Satanic Verses?" Now, there's some cutting edge moviemaking! <no pun intended... but it should have been!>

Yes, they're denying the

Yes, they're denying the film access to the churches, which isn't "fighting" but it's their part in voicing disdain.

"it's their part in voicing disdain."

Which is their absolute right, I'm sure you'd agree. Would you agree to aid someone attacking you? I know, you say it's not an attack, but Dan Brown has a "history" with the RCC, y'know?

And just btw, these aren't just "churches." The Diocese of Rome is also known as "The Vatican." This is the seat of the Church.

It bothers me a lot when

It bothers me a lot when people mock my religion. A religion they mostly know nothing about. I am glad that the church finally stood up and said NO, to filming in any of the churches in Rome. No to Dan Brown and NO to Opie. It's bad enough that the media mocks out Catholics and Christians, but fails to say anything when it is another religion that really mistreats people. Maybe it's because they know Catholics generally don't fight back. I am sick and tired of the bashing. I never saw nor read the DaVinci code. I felt too insulted by it.

How can you be insulted by

How can you be insulted by something you've never read? Was it simply the premise?

It bothers me a lot when

It bothers me a lot when people mock my religion. And I say read the Bible more often, because Jesus says you are in good company when they persecute you. In fact He said they will persecute you because of Him.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Good for the RCC

Turn it around on them: Have a movie producer with a script about bias and corruption at ABC NEWS ask that network for permission to film inside their news facilities.

Bingo

On the nose, G.

Well, the 'God's Rottweiler'

Well, the 'God's Rottweiler' angle didn't pan out so, but keep focused, ABC.

Let the Boy Wonder build a Rome stageset on the ashes of the recently incinerated 'Back to the Future' Hollywood soundstage.

ps: I must have missed all your coverage on the "Cartoons Incite Worldwide Murder Rampage" story. Or non-story.

Brown's DaVinci Code was

Brown's DaVinci Code was just plain boring.  I started to watch it when it came to TV, but couldn't get through it.  A thriller it was not.  Besides I hate this available light filming.  Most of the movie was filmed as if the lights had been turned off.

I finally got around to

I finally got around to watching this waste of celluloid the other night. The Dan Brown faithful were disappointed in the movie because they claim that they had to water it down. I think it more likely that the whole conspiracy looked sillier on film than it did on paper. I confess I didn't read the book.

I thought that Christian-hater Gaydalf (Ian McKellen) truly regaled in his role, being the speaking part through which Brown's anti-Catholic bile could be spewed out. He did turn out to be the villain after all. Maybe too much of a mixed message?

Premise aside. The whole movie was just bad. It never clicked as an adventure story. It wasn't suspenseful. I got really annoying with the protagonists' guesses ALWAYS being right on the money. It's like it didn't know if it wanted to be "All the President's Men" or "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Movie was a big letdown from

Movie was a big letdown from the book, which I really enjoyed. It had none of the mystery that the book had.

I don't need to step...

I don't need to step in horse manure to know that's what it is.
