CNN’s Roland Martin Slams ‘War Hero’ McCain While Speaking for Obama

NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterCNN contributor Roland Martin, asked about Democrats’ low poll results concerning national security on Friday’s "Election Center" program, answered using his best Barack Obama impression. "...John McCain, you're a war hero. You served. But you also voted for the war that's led to the death of 4,000 Americans. We have spent billions of dollars and, frankly, it has not stabilized the Middle East.... He's [Obama] going to put the cost of the war and how it has not done what it was supposed to on his back and say, you know what? Explain that, Mr. War Hero."

"Election Center" host Campbell Brown, prior to Martin’s answer, played a clip of Senator McCain criticizing Obama’s stance that if the Illinois Senator became President, he "would meet unconditionally with some of the world's worst dictators and state sponsors of terrorists." She then referenced a ABC News/Washington Post poll, conducted May 8-11, in her question to Martin. "Roland, I want to go to a point that we ended on a moment ago with Gloria. John McCain knows national security is the Democrats' weak spot. In a poll this week, McCain beat Obama on the question of who do you trust to deal with terrorism 55 percent to 34 percent. How does Obama begin to make up that gap, when he's running against a war hero?"

Martin’s full answer:

MARTIN: Well, first of all, what he is going to do is, he is going to say, okay, John McCain, you're a war hero. You served. But you also voted for the war that's led to the death of 4,000 Americans. We have spent billions of dollars and, frankly, it has not stabilized the Middle East. He's going to say, you aligned with the Bush administration, who went before Congress and who said, hey, our gas prices are going to go down because of the war in Iraq. We're not going to spend as much money. He's going to put the cost of the war and how it has not done what it was supposed to on his back and say, you know what? Explain that, Mr. War Hero.

Martin made the remark as part of a panel discussion, which included CNN senior political analyst Gloria Borger and former Mitt Romney campaign press secretary Kevin Madden. Later, Madden commented that he was "very struck by how Barack Obama immediately reacted to President Bush's remarks at the Knesset, even though he was never mentioned. There's an old saying in politics that... if you throw a rock over the fence, the dog that barks is the one that you hit."

Madden’s comment provoked Borger to reply, "Kevin, he was clearly talking about Obama," thus continuing CNN’s sensitivity towards President Bush’s "appeasement remark." Brown then asked Borger, "This discussion started when the President made his speech in Israel, saying there is no room for appeasement. And, of course, as Kevin pointed out, the White House is today saying that they don't know what this fuss is all about, that the President wasn't even talking about Obama. You buying it?"

Before the CNN senior political analyst could respond, Martin quipped sarcastically, "Oh, so cute." Borger then voiced her adamance about the President’s remark. "Oh, of course not. Of course not. There is not one word in a President's speech that isn't carefully considered, and they were talking about all Democrats, perhaps, who are now led by Barack Obama, who is the likely presidential nominee. And so, of course they were talking about Barack Obama."

Err...

There is not one word in a President's speech that isn't carefully
considered, and they were talking about all Democrats, perhaps, who are

so, of course they were talking about Barack Obama."

This is a variation of the modus porens argument that I'm not familiar with.

A probably leads to B, B probably leads to C, C probably leads to D. A, therefore, is (of course) equal to D. B is incorrect to start with, as not all Democrats are led by Barack Obama (see Reagan Democrats, Conservative Democrats, etc.). I hope Ms. Burger takes that into account on her next political foray.

foolican

I just wanted to take the time to tell you, especially because others are taking things personally, that despite the fact that you were the one to complain about the A-hole comment that I defended, I was not trying to attack you.

I've only seen a few of your posts and saw one the other day where you mentioned that you were a junior in high school. Wow. You are amazing. Extremely mature and well reasoned and I'm so glad there are people like you out there. I think you are our youngest Newsbusters poster and I'd have never suspected it in a million years.

I hope there are more of you out there.

President

Foolican for President - in 2036!

Agreed ort777!

I was blown away when he mentioned his age and wanted to comment on that thread but didn't have time and forgot about it.

times have changed

I know when I was a junior in high school, I was afraid to talk to an adult or look at them in the eye for longer than two seconds.  I'm sure the anonomity of the internet allows you to have the bravado to take on people that you normally wouldn't but surely, this "kid" has skills or as they say in their modern lingo "skillz".  I hope he/she keeps on the right path.

Plus he doesn't even abuse the anonymity

He's great.

Modesty forbids me!

Now, now, folks, this thread is about the CNN (which, contrary to popular belief, stands for Circus News Network, not Communist News Network) portrayal of Mr. War Hero, not me. Yes, I am young and therefore immature, but I am merely living up to the standards that my parents have set for me. Hence, please direct all praise and compliments to the appropriate parties; I'm just the messenger. ;-)

can't get out of this one

See, there you go again!  Now that you've given credit to your parents, you deserve all the praise in the world!  Your parents should be proud.  You should be willing to accept the praise once in a while but just stay humble.  You wear it well.

CNN used to be Clinton News Network back in the day.  Oh, those were the days - back when Ted Turner was running things.

Clinton News Network...

...back when Foolican was just beyond a glimmer in mom/dad's eye... ;-)

Well done Mr. Foolican! Keep up the good work!

Well educated masses will help to keep the Republic alive.

Two libs and a

Two libs and a conservative?

It's good to see that CNN is being fair and balanced as usual.

Mr. War Hero

Hey Martin, have you ever even read what ""Mr. War Hero" went through in defense of his country and his compatriots? "You served"??? He did much more than "serve", you fool. Neither you, nor Barry, nor Kerry could hold a candle to him... you stinking, under-educated ignoramus. I suppose Barry makes you proud of America for the first time in your life too. Ingrates, all of you!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Obama needs a history course

I just saw some of Obama's speech today in Montana. He said he wants to be like Kennedy who sat down and negotiated with Kruschev to remove missiles out of Cuba.

Huh?

Hey Obama, listen up. (1) Kennedy put up a blockade, and (2) Threatened the Soviet Union with destruction. That's what caused Kruschev to back down. Exactly what part of this "negotiation" involved no pre-conditions?

Obama also wants to be compared with Reagon. Well, I believe Reagon's negotiating words were something like: "Mr. Gorbachev. Tear down this wall!" What will your words be, Mr. Obama? "What can we give you to not hurt us"?

And it's clear that Obama is running against President Bush. He must have called out the President 100 times during his speech.

What a moron. This is the best the Demcratic party has?

Obama compares himself to Pres. Kennedy

WRONG!

Obama may more accurately compare himself to fellow Communist Nikita Kruschev.

Kruschev

"(1) Kennedy put up a blockade, and (2) Threatened the Soviet Union with destruction. That's what caused Kruschev to back down. Exactly what part of this "negotiation" involved no pre-conditions?"

Exactly so. Kennedy told the Kremlin he was ready to light the fuses on those missiles sitting there in Europe. Where does Obama get this stuff? I think he just makes it up. The problem is that history is so inadequately taught, most people don't know the difference between what Obama says happened, and what really happened.

Actually, it was Kennedy's

Actually, it was Kennedy's shilly-shallying and perceived weakness that precipitated the whole thing. I can't imagine the Soviets doing the same thing if Ronald Reagan was president at the time. In fact, we KNOW what happened when Reagan faced down the Soviets!

By uttering "Mr. War Hero"

By uttering "Mr. War Hero" this moron is openly mocking the reference, which McCain suffered greatly to earn.

I wonder what Martin would think if we were to call Nelson Mandela "Mr. Political Prisoner" with the same sneering contempt?

These liberals are so arrogant and stupid that the concept of "hypocrisy" is completely lost on them.

...and irony.

...and irony.

Obama / Martin 08

With all a$$ kissing that Martin does to Obama one has to wonder if he is trying for VP

When is CNN going to change his title form political analyst to Obama supporter.

I'll explain it, pal:  The

I'll explain it, pal:  The purpose of the war was to get rid of Hussein, eliminating one terrorist-supporting state from the earth while begining a process of democratization of the middle east and taking on the terrorists on their territory instead of here.

You can disagree with the policy all you want, but to say it hasn't accomplished its goals is just plain wrong.

"We have spent billions of

"We have spent billions of dollars and, frankly, it has not stabilized the Middle East."

And the appeasement, do-nothing approach of previous administrations did?

Hey Mr. Martin

Hey Mr. Martin, how many hundreds of billions have we've spent on the Democrat's War on Poverty since the 1960's and the poor are still not any better off?

trillions

Last time I lectured a lib, it was somewhere between $5 and $6 trillion spent on the war on poverty - but who's keeping track.  I mean it's just your well spent money.

I love you guys who can't understand basic English

Matthew,

Ok, maybe you were so caught up in looking for any dig on Sen. John McCain that you missed the premise of the question. Campbell asked, "How will Obama respond." So, as we do, we offer a potential answer.

Now, had Campbell asked, "How would McCain respond," I would have responded accordingly.

Do you not get that? It really is basic. I know you might catch on a little slow, but really, use your brain a moment and look at the context.

But I get it. Matthew has barely been out of school. He still has his training wheels on as a "news analyst." It might help Matthew to actually have worked in the news to the study the news, but hey, everyone needs a gig!

Thanks for giving me a good laugh.

Wow, a real live "Media Elite"

You all act snobby like that?  Or is it just you?

Talk about too funny!

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

re: I love you guys who can't understand basic English

You could have answered the question without the insulting "Mr War Hero" statement but you chose not to.  That says more about you and the network you represent than anything else.  Obama would never have said that so the words more represent your thought.  You disgust me you pig!

Ah, Roland, don't you have some fishin' to do down in Florida?

Or, am I perhaps confusing you with someone who reflects far more light than you do.

Something tells me that the far paler version of you is not nearly as "red" as you are.

Well, at least on the inside, anyway.

Jezz a hunch, you understand. :-)

Roland

You are so right Mr. Martin. We cannot understand basic english. We all go around talking like JFK, just like your hero Reverend Wright so eloquently demonstrated recently.

You know something, Mr. Martin? You are just like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. You make your living by flapping your gums 24/7 about how African Americans are never going to get a fair shake and that it's everyone else's fault but their own. Instead of complaining about how white America has misbehaved, why don't you spend some of your very valuable camera time addressing the problems that black Americans have brought upon themselves. The rampant fatherlessness in the black community is a tragedy, yet how often do we hear you ever address this subject? And do you not realize that those "compassionate" big government programs such as welfare and food stamps have been the biggest disaster in our nation's history when it comes to entitlement programs. These programs may have been well-intentioned to start, but they ended up being a major factor in the destruction of the black family unit. And I never hear you talk of abortion either. Does it not disturb you to hear of just how many little black babies are killed in the womb each and every day in this nation? I've yet to see CNN report on the Planned Parenthood clinics that took offers of donations from people who were posing as those who wanted to donate money strictly for the purpose of aborting black unborn children. Does this not fit in to the CNN agenda of racism that they seem to weave into every other story they do on that channel? I guess that maybe racism doesn't rate quite as high on the list when it comes into conflict with liberal America's favorite pet issue, abortion on demand. Seems highly hypocritcal, don't you think, Mr. Martin? I'd love to hear all of you so-called Christians, just once, denounce the brutal killing of an innocent human life in the womb. Yet while you remain silent on those little ones being brutalized, you liberal types waste no time in loudly vocalizing your opposition to the death penalty. Look, I can understand those who want no killing, for both unborn children and convicts, but when I hear such cold indifference to a defenseless child being ripped apart inside the womb versus the touchy feely compassion for child molesters and murderers, it really makes me ill. That child inside the womb deserves at least as much compassion as the monster who rapes little children and then buries them alive. Just to remind you, your man Obama voted against a measure that would have made it illegal to leave a child who had survived an abortion to die. I'm sorry, but I don't see how any human being can be so cold and indifferent. If this kind of "choice" is so important to folks like you, I pray that you will take some time to reflect and maybe get your priorities straightened out.

So, Mr. Martin, when is CNN going to do some investigative work on violations at Planned Parenthood? Your channel loves to do investigations, but I haven't seen any on this yet? What's the matter? Does this not fit with your channel's agenda? Oh, I already know the answer to that.

Roland it is funny you come

Roland it is funny you come on this site to denigrate Mathew under the guise of setting therecord straight.  Me thinks you doth protest too loudly.  You are so transparent.  You dont want any discussion and are little better than one of our resident troll bomb throwers.  I say this because of this you wrote to Mathew on another thread.  You say you want debate but at a premiere bomb throwing site, Huffypoo.  I say why not have one here as we are much more civilized and will have facts instead of teh usual fare at Huffypo.

The message you left:

Matthew,

What is illogical is for ANYONE to say, "You should leave your church."

I want to know how many conservatives are disgusted with one of the fathers of the Religious Right movement, Frank Schaeffer, who himself called for the overthrow of the government.

According to his own son, he was invited to the White House to meet with Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford!

But I doubt any of you will bother to make a proper comparison.

If you want to debate this issue - Bring it.

Did CNN approve this?

I am aware that CNN recently fired one of the producers of American Morning, Chez Pazienza, for blogging without their permission. Did you have to run your comments through Jon Klein before posting your thoughts over here at Newsbusters? It's not that I don't think CNN would approve of your writings, because it's apparent that you've got the talking points down, but I was just wondering, that's all.

As I previously posted, I'd really like to see CNN do some coverage of allegations of Planned Parenthood accepting special donations to pay for the abortions of black babies. Much of what you comment on for CNN involves issues of things racial, and I can't figure out for the life of me why the black community wouldn't just be outraged at the very thought that something like this would even be going on. Again, is it your agenda? Fear of the truth? Fear that ordinary Americans will see the truth about abortion, become horrified, and actually work to promote life instead of death? What is the mainstream media afraid of? What are you afraid of? If you're going to cry racism all the time, why don't you cover all the bases, sir? These abortion clinics are making millions, and many of those millions are obtained by the killing of innocent black children. But are black community leaders like yourself denouncing this tragedy? Nope. Complete silence. Think about it.

Laugh at this

Roland -

You want to critique McCain's stand on issues including the War in Iraq, then that is legitimate.

But what the hell did you ever do in the service of your country that remotely comes close to John McCain or, for that matter, George W. Bush? NOTHING.

More importantly what the hell has your guy Obama done in the service of his country? Or, an even better question would be what Obama has done at all? Please give me one single major accomplishment in this guy's life other than winning (or stealing)elections.

Your guy is a zero. He has no knowledge, no experience, and no ideas. He is the most dangerous (and dumbest) person ever to run for President in my llifetime and from either party. As Charles Krauthammer said Obama made a gaffe in a debate last year and turned it into a policy and now a doctrine.

There is a growing movement of Jewish voters and donors who are going to work to prevent Obama from securing the Presidency and send Israel spiraling into the worst regional war in its history.

Thanks for demonstrating

Thanks for demonstrating your Jr.-High mentality.

If you're right, and Mr O would respond the way you say he would, then you are both childish playground squabblers who have no business being in positions of influence.

First, you say "explain that" as if the challenge itself proves that there is no explanation.  Secondly, your childish "Mr. War Hero" is an insult to the intelligence of anyone who is truly concerned with the issues and not just playing a game of "gotcha."  And to top it off, you display your elitist arrogance by denigrating someone's credibility based on how long they've been out of school - Do you know what a non sequitur is?

I'd laugh if it wasn't so pitiful.

Little difference

I see little difference in Martin and Keith Olberwhacky.

Jerry, actually, unlike Olbermann, Roland Martin got his job...

...possibly for reasons other than his qualifications.

And that is saying something, given Kieth Olbermann's even fewer qualifications.
