Agence France-Presse, in a report on Mumia Abu-Jamal, who has been on Pennsylvania's death row for over twenty-five years for the murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981, referred to the cop killer as a "human rights campaigner." Abu-Jamal, whose birth name is Wesley Cook, had his murder conviction upheld by a panel of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday, but the court also decided that either he must receive a life sentence, or receive a new sentencing hearing.
AFP’s headline for their report read, "US court overturns rights campaigner’s death penalty," and its opening sentence referred to "the death sentence passed against human rights campaigner Mumia Abu-Jamal." In its closing sentence, AFP referenced how Abu-Jamal "became a leading campaigner against the death penalty" while on death row.
This isn’t the first time a French organization has been sympathetic to Abu-Jamal. In 2006, the Parisian suburb of St. Denis honored the convicted murderer by naming a street in his honor. In France’s capital city itself, the city council named him a honorary citizen of the "City of Lights" in 2001.

Funny how that works. Kinda like that old standby for convicts "It wasn't me"
Perhaps one of our NB lefties can help me here...

I have never understood the American political left's fascination with this admittedly-articulate cop-killer. Why him? What is it about this guy's case that makes you throw all credibility away when libertarians like Radley Balko swamp the 'net (to your & the media's silence...sigh) with a plethora of MUCH more convincing police misconduct cases for what you-lefties -- who are anti-gun/anti-violence, right??? -- purportedly want, politically?
Please, lefties-only if possible, help me out. What obvious or not so obvious thing am I missing about the Mumia case, or what am I totally misunderstanding about the left??? Thanks.

Their silence is deafening. You should know by now Sarc that they never know about these things. Some knucklehead tells them he's a cool dude and they simply believe it. Just think about their other hero's such as Chaves, Castro, Amanutcase, Mandela and so on, no rhyme or reason. The difference with NB's libs is they do think for themselves, that's why they are here. To the rest of them, truth is in the eye of the beholder.

March 27, 2008 - 15:52 ET by NL207Simple solution to a pressing public safety problem: Let us deport Mumia Abu-Jamal to France under pain of death. Since the French like him so much they should receive him with open arms. He should fit right in there. He is a cowardly murderer. They are a load of cowards. A match made in Heaven.
France likes American murderers
March 27, 2008 - 18:50 ET by easygoerYou might have something there, NL207. Remember Ira Einhorn, that peace loving hippie who beat his girlfriend to death and hid out in France for many years while he was on the lam. When he was finally caught, I recall reading about how well liked he was in the small French village that was his hideout. They were sad to see such a kind man go. Then the French gov't wouldn't turn him over to us until we agreed to take the death penalty off the table AND give him a new trial(he had already been tried and convicted in absentia). The jury in the new trial returned a guilty verdict in two hours. Still, he managed to escape the execution he so richly deserved.
Btw, Einhorn's original lawyer was none other than Arlen Specter.

However, in this case, I'd gladly volunteer to throw the switch (or depress the plunger) myself.
