LAT’s McManus Overlooks Clinton’s Flip-Flop on Licenses for Illegals

NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterDoyle McManus, Washington Bureau Chief for the Los Angeles Times, and one of the three members of the mainstream media who asked questions at Thursday night’s Democratic presidential debate on CNN, neglected to mention Hillary Clinton’s previous waffling on the subject of driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants when he asked the former First Lady about the issue. "Senator Clinton, Senator Obama has said that he favors allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, and you opposed that idea. Why?"

As CNSNews Editor-in-Chief Terry Jeffrey noted after the November 15, 2007 Democratic debate (where Clinton answered that she did not support licenses for illegal immigrants), Clinton, with that answer, contradicted what she had said in an interview with the Nashua [N.H.] Telegraph on October 17, 2007, almost a month earlier. In the interview, Clinton voiced support for New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s plan to give illegal immigrants driver’s licenses, stating that "it makes a lot of sense." When Tim Russert asked Clinton about the issue at the Democratic presidential debate in Philadelphia two weeks later on October 30, she gave, as Jeffrey put it, "a long and apparently contradictory series of answers about whether to give illegals driver's licenses."

Clinton initially ignored answering McManus’ question. Instead, she answered the previous question made by Jeanne Cummings of the Politico, who asked a viewer’s question on the negative economic impact of illegal immigrants on African-Americans’ wages and unemployment rate. She only briefly mentioned the licenses issue at the end of her answer.

Debate moderator Wolf Blitzer didn’t immediately ask a follow-up question to Clinton on the licenses issue. Instead, he asked Obama about what he meant when he said that he stood for a "humane and intelligent immigration policy in a way that, frankly, none of my other opponents did." After Obama defended his support for "comprehensive immigration reform," Blitzer asked Clinton about whether she was "missing in action" when senators, including Obama, began "formulating comprehensive immigration reform."

NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterWhen Clinton defended her record of supporting "comprehensive immigration reform," Blitzer finally returned to the issue of driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. "Very quickly, Senator, why not then, if you’re that passionate about it, let them get driver’s licenses?" Clinton’s answer:

HILLARY CLINTON: Well, we disagree on this. I do not think that it is either appropriate to give a driver's license to someone who is here undocumented, putting them, frankly, at risk, because that is clear evidence that they are not here legally. And, I believe it is a diversion from what should be the focus at creating a political coalition with the courage to stand up and change the immigration system.

This prompted Obama to respond, correcting the record for both Clinton and McManus.

BARACK OBAMA: The only point I would make is -- is Senator Clinton, you know, gave a number of different answers over the course of six weeks on this issue, and that did appear political. Now, you know, at this point, she's got a clear position. But it took awhile. And...

CLINTON: Well...

OBAMA: ...I'm just being, just in fairness, the -- initially in a debate, you said you were for it. Then you said you were against it. And the only reason I bring that up is to underscore the fact that this is a difficult political issue. The -- from my perspective, I agree with Bill Richardson, that there is a public safety concern here, and that we're better off -- because I don't want a bunch of hit-and-run drivers, because they are worried about being deported, and so they don't report an accident. That is a judgment call. But I do think it is important to recognize that this can be tough, and the question is, who is going to tackle this problem, and solve it? Many of the solutions that Senator Clinton just talked about are solutions that I agree with, that I've been working on for many years, and my suspicion is, whatever our differences, we're going to have big differences with the Republicans. But I think a practical common sense solution to the problem is what the American people are looking for.

Clinton immediately responded that Obama himself had trouble answering the question during the Democratic debate on November 15, 2007 (something that Jeffrey pointed out in his CNSNews article above).

CLINTON: I just have to correct the record for one second, because, obviously, we do agree about the need to have comprehensive immigration reform, and if I recall, about a week after I said that I would try to support my governor, although I didn't agree with it personally, you were asked the same question and could not answer it. So, this is a difficult issue, and both of us have to recognize that it is not something that we easily come to because we share a lot of the same values. We want to -- we want to be fair to people, we want to respect the dignity of every human being -- every person who is here. But we are trying to work our way through to get to where we need to be, and that is to have a united Democratic party, with fair-minded Republicans who will join us, to fix this broken immigration system.

CNN

Let's not forget that this so-called debate was on the Clinton News Network. There were some obvious questions and follow-ups that were never mentioned.

An LA Times reporter

An LA Times reporter ignoring glaring discrepancies in Hillary's positions on the Clinton News Network?  Shocking.

Was that the most sugar coated Kumbaya lovefest you've ever seen.

There was the elderly matron and the elegant young suit model calmly discussing their similarities before a sedate audience.

It was Masterpiece of Sh#t Theatre.

Soft Ball Debate

I believe that ALL the democrat debates have followed the republican debates. This gives the dems a chance to "stage" a difference between the parties as they did last nite. McCain could have passed for a sabetour in the last republican debate.

Sabateur provocateur, no less.

He could show up in tights and frilly blouse.

Yeah, I watched a bit of

Yeah, I watched a bit of the debate here online, and was in on the chat, and when she said she didn't think it was a good idea, I asked "Then why did you say OK to it before?????

Would that have beeen so tough for McManus to think of? And oh, yeah, Clinton's sort of "let's both agree to waffle on this issue" was a classic!

The whole concept of debates for Presidential candidates has gone down the tubes. The whole thing was a series of one set of talking points after another.

I don't imagine I missed anything when I tuned out.

McCain (D-AZ) = Mz Clinton

McCain and her are on the same side of the argument once again with this issue. They both want amnesty and they want illegals to have driver's licenses, in-state tuition, and the the list goes on. And both think that the media is their base and don't think tax cuts work. I'm still going to write in "Fred Thompson". Or maybe I'll try to write "R. Reagan".

AC, check out this video of Ann Coulter talking to Hannity and Colmes, and she says she would vote for Hillary over McCain because she would be stronger on the war and hasn't spoken out to close Guantanamo like McCain has, and actually lies less than McCain.....

Coulter on McCain/Clinton

I saw that last night...

Hard to tell if she was actually serious, but sounded like it!

McCain is bad for America, but Hellary is still worse. I just hope Repubs get smart in the next couple of days and vote for Mitt on Tuesday (I know I will). I hate to think of McCain as the Repub choice. Could I go along with Ann? Not sure......not ready to think about that.

It's not Right vs. Left; it is Right vs. Wrong

The thing that kills me is

The thing that kills me is everyone keeps talking as if McCain is already the nominee (not Coulter, she says IF). Clinton and Obama keep arguing over who can beat McCain.

Did I do a Rip van Winkle and miss Super Tuesday, the convention, everything?????

I hope like hell the Republicans don't do a 1996 and give it to McCain because it's "his time," having lost the nomination to Bush in 2000.

This snowball is rolling downhill and I don't see how anyone can stop it.

This is depressing.

If Mitt does get the nod, everyone will scream "FRAUD!!!!!!!!!"

Most Recent Debate Between Hillary and Barack

Hillary by saying an African American man had problems because of jobs in their comments on immigration, was a way of cleverly pitting one group against the other.  Also, Barack Obama's Health Care is the Same Universal Health Care offered by Hillary and Edwards, but with one Major Difference: You Have the Option of Choice!   We as a nation have to decide, do we want to be forced to pay for universal medical insurance, like we are mandated to pay for auto insurance now?  Or would we rather have the option of CHOICE -- to be able to decide whether or not we want to buy our medical coverage when we think the time is right?   Barack Obama's plan thoughtfully does not want to put another mandated cost, like auto insurance, on the backs of the people, especially the young, who already have college costs to contend with.  However, the coverage is always there for you, if and when you need it.   That is our decision and our choice!

Our power went out

Our power went out yesterday morning and didn't come back on until most of the debate was over, the part about illegal immigration and the pale question by McManus was the first I saw...I heard her cackle earlier and then this, another cackle later...then blah blah blah...what I saw it was absolutely boring, I fell asleep before it was over...

Looks like from what I have heard on the talking head shows, and from what I have read here and there, I missed absolutely nothing with this so-called debate.

Both Clinton and Obama are

Both Clinton and Obama are dancing around the real issue here, Black unemployment has hit 9.2% versus 4.9% for the general population.  Their unemployment rate has been increasing, so who do you think took their jobs?  The employers or illegals (so called undocumented)??  http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm

It is patently unfair to the poor of this country to flood the market with illegals and then claim you want to be fair to illegals by giving them drivers licenses or addressing immigration policy in a manner that disadvantages the poor who are US citizens.  We have over 7.5 million people unemployed, it is irresponsible of any politician to put non citizens whom they don't represent at the front of the line of those whom they do represent.  Worse yet, the taxpayer has to fork over billions of dollars in various poverty programs from EIC to food stamps just to make up for their largess.  Enough already!!!!!

Every country south of the border is responsible for their citizens, we are not the lifeboat of planet earth!  It's time for foreign governments to adjust their laws and regulations to be friendly to business investment and operation.  The US has set the example and they should follow.  If they don't want to follow, then they don't have any right to dump their poor on us because their politicians are too lazy, PC or corrupt to look after their own.
