CNN’s Chetry Questions Hillary on Boston Globe’s Endorsement of Obama

NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterPrior to her "tear" question, which Mika Brzezinski asked only minutes before on MSNBC, CNN’s Kiran Chetry did direct one tough question to Hillary Clinton on Monday's "American Morning," concerning the Boston Globe’s endorsement of Barack Obama and the paper’s criticism of her campaign. "'The Boston Globe' endorsed Senator Obama, saying about you, in fact, 'her approach is needlessly defensive, a backward glance at the bruising political battles of the 1990s.' Is 'The Globe's' statement fair?"

Hillary tailored her response to make it about the debate over the economy.

CLINTON: Well, I really don't know what they're talking about. You know, the battles of the 1990s produced the best economy in decades. It took on a lot of tough issues, ending up with a balanced budget and a surplus, reforms, welfare. You know, it made a lot of positive change. Actually, here in Iowa, the typical Iowa family had an increase of $7,000 in their income during the 90s. Now, the average American family is down $1,000. You know, some fights are worth taking on, and you know, when everybody talks about change, like we do in the campaign on the Democratic side, you know, some people think you bring change by demanding it, and some people think you bring change by hoping for it. I think you bring change by working hard, and sometimes that means finding common ground, and sometimes that means standing your ground. And I feel very, you know, very good about how people are looking at my campaign, because they know that we need a president, day one, to start making these changes.

In the full context of their endorsement of Obama, the Globe had complemented Clinton for her "diligent, serious campaign" and noted that "her command of the issues is deep and reassuring." The Globe then continued with the "political battles" line. "But her approach is needlessly defensive, a backward glance at the bruising political battles of the 1990s. Obama's candidacy looks forward."

"Well, I really don't know what they're talking about."

Oh, for Pete's sake. If you're telling the truth, you must be running on the "I'm stupid" platform and not "It's the economy, stupid" one...

"best economy in decades",

"best economy in decades", the 1990's???

Let's see now, the 1990's followed the greatest peacetime expansion of the economy in history (1982-1989 - thanks Ronny!).

The period from 1989 through 1992 saw only1 quarter of recession (due mainly to the Gulf War and the 1990 tax compromise pushed by the Dems), yet the economy rebounded and Bush's term ended with a GDP growth rate of 4.2%. 1993 to 2000 was a continuation of the Reagan/Bush economy.

But, by the time Hillary's sometime-hubby was done the stock market was crashing and the growth rate was on it's way to .08%. If that's what she thinks is a great economy, God help us if she somehow becomes president.

Since W's tax cuts the economy has been steadily growing.

Is Hillybilly hoping to follow BJ's footsteps and inherit a growing economy only to destroy it in 8 years - then blame the succeeding GOP president?

BTW How much make up must she be wearing? (Compare to this photo)

Hey, I got'em all right here:

BEST OF HILLARY

I'm your ugly-HRC-pic pusher man :p

Btw, good post above, and let us not forget: oh, you remember, right? (the dims have almost forgotten... ) That Pearl Harbor-style attack on our shores? During his first year of office, setting off a war on terror?

And STILL, he's managed to pull us up and revive the economy.

We bid a fond farewell to Professor Talking Points & Cheetos

matt, you must be mistaken.

matt, you must be mistaken. Mr. Clinton said in 1991, when he was running for President, that the US was in the middle of "the worst economy in 50 years."

And before she disses Obama too badly, Her Royal Clintoness should remember that he can now say, quoting her Royal Self to David Gregory as proof of her competence .."I have editorial support."

Is this going to be a case of "My editorial support can beat up your editorial support!"?

It's The Economy, Stupid!

"Mr. Clinton said in 1991, when he was running for President, that the US was in the middle of "the worst economy in 50 years." "

In fact, as government statistics later proved, the economic recovery had begun in March of 1991. The pro-Bill media just forgot to report it so they could get invited to State Dinners at the White House and have their actress frineds bounce up and down on the bed in the Lincoln Bedroom.

Many years later, in fact, the NY Times admitted that the recovery that started a year and a half before Clinton stole the Electoral Vote was "unreported" at the time.

Gee, wonder why that was?

I miss Kiran

I think she may be the most beautiful woman on the news.  And she was so much fun when she was on Fox and Friends.

But now, she is an MSMer.  Sad.  (sigh)

I miss Kiran too!!!

So well said...

She was absorbed into the collective. Resistance was futile.

We've still got the morning weather...

But if it were up to me, Dominica Davis & Jackie Meretski would have to do it together despite their different networks. And then, if we're lucky, they might want to kiss at the end. ;)
