CNN’s Cafferty Promotes AP Poll Claim That ‘Liberals Read More Than Conservatives’

CNN’s Jack Cafferty, who recently thinly-disguised his support for the impeachment of President Bush, couldn’t resist talking about the recent AP/Ipsos poll that claimed that liberals read more than conservatives. (See Matthew Sheffield's post debunking the poll.) His question during his "Cafferty File" segment during the 4 pm EDT hour of Wednesday’s "The Situation Room" took this apparent "fact" for granted. "Liberals read more books than conservatives. Why?"

The full transcript of Jack Cafferty’s segment:

I have nothing that pertains to the weather, but here is an interesting little factoid. Liberals read more books than conservatives. An AP/Ipsos poll found that while 22% of liberals and moderates say they have not read a single book in the last year, the number jumps up to 34% for conservatives. Perhaps more troubling is the fact that 1 in 4 Americans say they haven't read any books in the last year, but that's not what we're here to discuss. The poll found that among people who read at least one book a year, liberals typically read nine books; conservatives eight; moderates, five.

The head of a book publishing industry trade group offers this explanation. Pat Schroeder says, 'The Karl Roves of the world have built a generation that just wants a few slogans. Things like no new taxes.' No surprise here. Pat Schroeder was a formerly liberal member - a former member of Congress who is a liberal. She says liberals can't say anything is less than a whole paragraph. Mary Matalin, who is a Republican strategist, says that conservatives don't read less. They just get their information from different places, such as magazines or the Internet.

So here's the question. Liberals read more books than conservatives. Why?

I guess Cafferty should be given credit for giving both sides of the spin surrounding this poll.

Interestingly enough, the e-mail answers to his question that Cafferty read at the end of the 4 pm hour were mostly from conservatives. Hugh in Vero Beach, Florida responded, "Speaking as a conservative, can you really believe a conclusion that was most likely researched and concluded by liberals?" Paul from Toledo Ohio wrote, "Liberals read more books because they read fiction only. Conservatives are too busy reading lengthy non-fiction dealing in facts!" A viewer named Brian opined, "Because conservatives are out working for a living while liberals are living off the dole in one form or another and have plenty of time to read."

The only really wacko left-wing response that Cafferty read came, as you might expect, from San Francisco. Ron from that liberal enclave claimed, "Unlike conservatives, liberals tend to get all the information we can to make up our own minds, and yes, that includes reading books. I can't imagine having Rush "Windbag," Ann Coulter, and/or the rest of the residents of 'Wingnutia' telling me what to think. The idea of blindly buying ideology and not challenging what you're told is disgusting."

Due to the heavy leftie bias

Due to the heavy leftie bias at publishing companies, there are a lot more leftie propaganda books(and movies) than there are conservative books(and movies). Duh.

is this another poll of

is this another poll of about 200 people?

this is a wake up call for me. I'm just sick over this...

what are we going to do fellow conservatives?! we are really sunk now:(

Jack bud, I...I'm so humiliated...what must i do to win back your precious favor?!?!?!?

Guaranteed

Here are three things I am relatively confident of:

1- Liberals probably read more fiction than Conservatives do.

2- Liberal books/authors get more/favorable play vs. conservative authors (Rush Limbaugh never had either of his books reviewed by the NYT even after his book was #1 on their list for months; ditto for O'Reilly) thus a better chance at high sales figures

3- This poll probably reflects a difference in honesty between Liberals and Conservatives. A liberal FEELS the need to say they read a book because they care, because they need to reinforce their idea of self-worth, because they feel they are smarter etc. A Conservative would tend to ADMIT they may have not read a book or not as many because they want to be Intellectually Honest.

Many authors of fiction

Many authors of fiction tend to be the artsy fartsy "creative" type of people.  This means, like liberals, they are good at making stuff up.

Just look at them

If you have any doubt that dems (libs) read more than Republicans, then I invite you to do something.

Turn on the TV during the next democratic party convention. When they pan around at the crowd, just take a look at these people. They look like crosses between Mortimer Snerd, Howdy Doody, Michael Moore and the cave men in those insurance commercials. You've never seen a more goofy looking bunch of people in your life.

Therefore I believe that it is hands down. They read more funny papers, comic books and pornographic magazines than anyone on the face of the earth: SEEEEE-----TED-----RUN. SEEEE---SALLY RUN. TED & SALLY HAVE A DOG----SPOT. SEEEEE SPOT RUN.

Oh yeah; they are a group of rocket scientists ok. As if you couldn't tell that by what they believe in.

Pat Schroeder says, 'The

Pat Schroeder says, 'The Karl Roves of the world have built a generation that just wants a few slogans.

Uh huh. You mean like: "Clinton lied, no one died", or "No Blood for Oil", or "Make Love Not War", or "Books not Bombs", or "War Is Not The Answer", or "Free Palestine" or "Question Authority". I could go on, but you get the point. Yep, just slogans, that's all they want. No deep thinking.

Incidently, the only rightwing slogan that I remember is: "America, Love It or Leave It". However, I rarely see those now.

What I also believe is that self-described liberals are more likely to lie to answer a survey question.

Let's see--I read one book

Let's see--I read one book each week, sometimes more if I have time.  I didn't know I was lagging behind liberals.  But then I am selective about what I buy--nothing from say, Cafferty or Schroeder, Moore, Franken, etc.  That would be a terrible waste of money.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

Andrew, This is another

Andrew,

This is another idiot statement from the Hil-shill press.

Before my job got so crazy (and in reality, before I found NB), I used to have a bookstore habit of about $50 a week....one hard cover and about 3 softcover books.  And about the same ration of serious books to techno-trash.

My parents still rail at me for spending money on books when I can just get them from the library...but I am very picky, and I hate reading library books with all of their smudges and bits of other people's food....yuck!

If you don't believe me, I can send you a pic of my living room, filled to the brim with boxes full of books....still trying to figure out where to put them...unless a book is total trash, it's too dear to throw out or give away.

Insider's View

Blonde:

There was an antique bookstore near where I live.  Some really fantastic books and antique maps.  (Maps are crazy priced and sell like hot cakes)  What a great place it was.

A couple of their people would go to estate sales and auctions and purchase books.  Occasionally, they would take a bunch of used  books, not worth their weight in nickels, as part of obtaining the valuable books.  Most of the time the owner just wanted to get rid of the books someway, and the next option was the garbage can.

The store would turn around and sell them in bulk to interior decorators or home owners that were looking for a quick fix to fill up a wall or two of bookshelves, in the process giving the appearance of intelligence to the homeowner - "Gee, you read all those books?!".  As you can imagine, serial editions and sets were most desirable, as were hardcover over paperback.

Now here's the kicker:  more times than not, these faux collections were sold to Liberals!!!  I kid you not.  Maybe it's because I live in a Liberal county.  But, maybe not.

To paraphrase Garrett Morris as Chico Escuela on SNL, "Phoney book collection been berry berry good to me".

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

Don't read as much, eh?

I'm pondering this question as I'm pouring over my new Smith & Weston operating manual -- read it front to back several times.

Time to put theory to practice. Where's the nearest Liberal hunting ground?

If you ever get asked how

If you ever get asked how many books you read, count each time you read the manual as a different book.  That's how liberals would do it.

The difference, of course, is that you remember reading it each and every time.  I'm not sure libs would know they read the same book over and over again.

Albert Camus once said that

Albert Camus once said that no one became a communist from reading Marx, "first they converted then they read scriptures."

But scriptures for the Cafferty types aren't holy writ, but vomitus from Chomsky, Moore, Howard Zinn, NPR, and other assorted Hollywoodenhead elitists.

I would prefer to read NON-FICTION from someone the likes of Thomas Jefferson, Ayn Rand, William F. Buckley, or even Rush and the rest of the "wingnutia" before I read the anti-semitic, anti-religious, ideological psychopathy from the so-called liberals.

Liberal: a power worshipper without power. George Orwell

On Ayn Rand and reading in general

Now that you mention Ayn Rand, I suspect the length of her novels causes the Leftists to run away whining "It's too long!  It's too hard to read!!!"

Funny how I did just fine reading them and countless other books in spite of my alleged allergy to books that Cafferty and Schroeder ascribe to me.

Indeed, the book I am currently reading on the Berlin Wall is sure to cause them to feel very uncomfortable...seeing as Nothing Bad Happens On The Left and all.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

You Reminded Me...

Albert Camus once said that no one became a communist from reading Marx, "first they converted then they read scriptures."

You reminded me of that great Reagan quote:

"Communists read Marx. Capitalists understand Marx."

Thats funny most of the

Thats funny most of the books on the best selling lists are usually written by Conservatives..so somebody must be reading them...as with most polls I have a hard time beliving this one either.

Reading doesn't mean a thing unless one can comprehend the material. Besides, having pretensions to be intellectuals, Liberals would lie about that kind of thing. Liberals reply (in a superior voice) to a question about a television show, "I read. I don't watch TV, unless it's PBS...".

My guess is that, when polled, the conservatives told the truth.

The liberals, on the other hand, fudged a bit to make themselves sound more intellectual.

The difference is that when asked "how many books have you read in the last year" conservatives don't include comic books.

From a technical standpoint, I can honestly say I currently read over a dozen books a week, and in the past often read that many in a single day. Of course the bulk of those are childrens books I read to my kids. But technically...
