WaPo Columnist Works Gratuitous Swipe at Romney Into Story About National Park Service

"Summer’s in full swing, and unless your family is rather Romney-esque, there’s a chance you’ll be spending some time in one of the country’s hundreds of national parks. " That's how Washington Post "In the Loop" columnist worked in a gratuitous swipe at the presumptive GOP presidential nominee in today's "In the Loop" column in which he interviewed Jonathan Jarvis, the head of the National Park Service.

It's tempting to think this was an out-of-the-blue snark by Kamen, but you will recall that on June 25 he asked his readers for their input on where the Obamas should vacation, cheekily noting that it was "our civic duty" to help pick the next vacation spot for the first family -- although it appears Kamen never had such a contest when President Bush was in office.

In that same column Kamen wrote the family might have to settle for an abbreviated trek to somewhere far less posh — perhaps a national park. You might recall that during the 1996 presidential reelection campaign, the Clintons (who also favored holidaying at Martha's Vineyard) hunkered down during the GOP convention in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and toured Yellowstone, a poll-tested acceptable vacation spot in a crucial reelection year.

George W. Bush waited out the Dems’ 2004 summer confab at his Crawford, Tex., ranch."  However, heaven forbid Mitt Romney take some time off without the help of an opinion poll from voters and on his own dime.

Kamen is not alone, of course, among journalists attacking Romney's vacation venue.  Kristin A. Lee of New York Daily News wrote that "as Mitt Romney continued a family getaway at his multi-million dollar New Hampshire compound on Friday, President Obama recalled riding on Greyhound buses and staying at Howard Johnson hotels on his own childhood vacations."

"During a campaign rally in Ohio, Obama said that as a child he was excited just to play with the ice machine and swim in the hotel pool. It didn’t matter how big it was, Obama said."  Does the media forget that Mr. Obama is also in the 1%?"   If the media is trying comment on families having to scale back on vacation and rely on national parks, isn't that partly Obama's fault, given his handling of the economy?  You don't have to be Romney rich to spend a week on a lake.

Nevertheless, ABC News's Emily Friedman noted in a blog post that "just a few hours after telling reporters the jobs report today was a 'kick in the gut' for Americans, Mitt Romney returned to his vacation, driving his high-power speedboat, filled to the brim with his kids and grandkids, to a nearby home for a dip in Lake Winnipesaukee."

Norah O'Donnell took a shot at Romney on CBS This Morning stating  "while the president's on a bus, Romney's been on a boat, photographed while on vacation with his family in New Hampshire, and facing criticism from his own party."

The media finds Romney's family vacation newsworthy, but not the dismal jobs report that continues to chip away at the president's narrative of an economic recovery.

Norah O'Donnell, "while

Submitted by ant on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 7:33pm.

Norah O'Donnell, "while Obama's been on a bus, Romney's been on a boat....blah, blah.." She can't seriously be trying to portray Obama as bearing a perceived hard-ship in contrast to Romney...there's no way anybody, even a shill like Norah, could believe that idea would fly. We know Obama already. It must simply be an attempt at 'cuteness' in that bus and boat both begin with 'b'. Has to be.

Summer Vacation

Just like Bill and Hillary

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 11:39pm.

Just like Bill and Hillary "roughed it" in Jackson Hole Wyoming that one election year, and then promptly ran back to Martha's Vineyard the next and ever after.

The burden of governing never kept Obama from vacationing before, so you KNOW it's the campaign he's worried about.

Romney, however, is comfortable taking a break.  Good for him.

Jer still hasn't decided whether the Obama Administration's facilitation of the murders of more than 200 Mexican citizens is something he should vocally support, or quietly keep to himself.

New Hampshire is nice...

Submitted by StarAZ on Sat, 07/07/2012 - 1:01pm.

Since when is NH the garden spot of the universe--it's lush and nice--but wouldn't the real luxury be in say, Hawaii? Or the Vineyard? Also, if you are going to ridicule the jet ski, put it next to the girl's bike Obama rode. Fair's fair. Ooops--forgot--fair is not fair.

Obama compares apples to oranges

Submitted by motherbelt on Sat, 07/07/2012 - 1:33pm.

Star, I grew up in Massachusetts and had many friends whose families went to Lake Wennipesaukee for a week during the summer.  And they weren't rich, by any stretch of the imagination.

You're right; while it's a very nice place, it's hardly Hyannis Port, where the Kennedys summered, or Martha's Vineyard, where Obama has vacationed the past 3 years.

You can rent an "estate" on Lake W for around $12,000 a week.  Take a look at THIS, for example.

That doesn't hold a candle to the Obamas' $50,000/week rental at Blue Heron Farm on the Vineyard.

That's why Obama is desperately trying to compare the Romneys' current vacation to the ones he took as a kid, rather than the ones he takes now.

Maybe the Romneys like it BECAUSE it's not like those other places.

Believe me, when Romney is elected and the press corps have to go there during his family vacations, they will gripe about being in the back of beyond.

*edited to correct to Blue Heron Farm.

We went to Squirrel Lake in Wisc

Submitted by StarAZ on Sat, 07/07/2012 - 5:59pm.

We drove there in a Cadillac--so figure that one. I loved Squirrel so much I have a pix of the dock as my screen saver 50 yrs later. Somehow--to pick up the other funny thread here--I don't see Obama regularly hopping The Hound, even as a kid---was that with his bank officer Grandma? I am sure all this is a diversion--ah, yes, the jobs report.
