Mike Tyson: Bigoted Tea Party Can't Stand Seeing Obama as 'Strongest Man on the Planet'

By Matt Hadro | March 30, 2012 | 11:00

A  A

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson believes America has become more racist since Barack Obama was elected president, and that groups like the Tea Party have surfaced through that racism. Tyson's interview by CNN's Piers Morgan aired on Thursday night's Piers Morgan Tonight.

Tyson professed that "there's a great possibility" that America has become more racist since Obama's election, and when asked to clarify he affirmed "a hundred percent, yes." [Video below the break.]

"Because that's how these groups surface, these red – Tea Party and everything," Tyson added.

Tyson observed that "it's new stuff" that a black man has "the image of the strongest man on the planet." He seemed to infer that is "pretty tough to take in" for his opponents. "And that must be pretty tough to take in when you – I don't know," he told Morgan.

However, when asked how he well thought President Obama was performing, Tyson answered "I don't know."

A transcript of the segment, which aired on March 29 on Piers Morgan Tonight at 9:33 p.m. EDT, is as follows:

PIERS MORGAN: Did you think America, Mike, has become more or less racist since Barack Obama, an African-American, became president?

MIKE TYSON, former undisputed heavyweight champion: There's a great possibility, yes.

MORGAN: That it's become worse?

TYSON: A hundred percent, yes. Because that's how these groups surface, these red – Tea Party and everything. Listen, it's new stuff, being a black man, having the image of the strongest man on the planet, the biggest man in the world, from a political point – standpoint – that's a political standpoint, you can send the strongest army in the world and in the country and stuff. And that must be pretty tough to take in when you – I don't know. It's just the way this country is. I just believe this is just the best country in the world. We just have problems we have to iron out, but –

MORGAN: How do you think Barack Obama's doing as president?

TYSON: I don't know. I live in a Barack Obama household. From – from ethnicity, I think that's beautiful seeing a black president, for my children to see a black president. But I'm just – regardless if he's president or not, I have to be the bread winner of my family. If he's the president or if he's not a president, I'm going to be the one paying the bills and working. So it really doesn't matter.

Another endorsement from the convicted felon voting block.  Yea, Tyson lives in Nevada, where it's illegal for convicted felons to vote.  Of course, convicted felons don't have a very good track record when it comes to following the law.

And yet...

Submitted by c5then on Fri, 03/30/2012 - 11:26am.

The Tea Parties (plural because there are a number of organizations) were the biggest backers of Herman Cain's Presidential run.

I think that "some people" cannot come to grips with the fact that a large group of people disagree with them. They seem to feel the need to attribute that to some irrational phobia or bigotry on the part of their opponents instead of attributing it a simple difference of opinion.

But the reall issue is that Mike Tyson can be concidered an expert in absolutely nothing except perhaps boxing and rape. That and Piers Morgan is a yellow "journalist" of the worst kind and will probably do jail time in the UK for having his employees hack into people's phones.

I mean seriously!!! Two criminals talking about politics is the best CNN can do???!!!!

Wow.

Political commentary from Mike Tyson. Liberals are desperate.

First, Obama is only 50% black.
Second, his race has nothing to do with his divisiveness.
Third, the TEA parties are about taxes (Taxed Enough Already)
and they have nothing to do with racism ... party members are truly diverse.

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

Tyson has been hit in the head one to many times. What an idiot. These so called celebrities will not vote for the good of America they vote "race". If we were so bigoted Obama would never have been elected president. Now we are just more aware of his policies and we don't like the way our country is going. That is what we do every four years, we have a vote to select someone else. I for one at 65 years old, have never seen this country so divided and it is not that all of a sudden 100 percent of the white people decided to become racist. It is his policies dummy, not his color.

Considering Mike Tyson's own record and I don't mean boxing, this ignoramus should not be shooting his mouth off about other people's actions on anything. What proof does this guy have that the TEA Party has been racist? Whether you are an active TEA Party activist or a supporter, people are criticizing Obama for his policies and actions, not the color of his skin as Americans did with Obama's fellow Democrat, Jimmy Carter. Mr Tyson would do well to temper his remarks considering he is a convicted man. He doesn't have the credibility to criticize any American for anything.

My favorite fight of all time

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sat, 03/31/2012 - 1:08pm.

I never liked Tyson, as a fighter. I just happened to be in a hotel sports bar in Memphis, accompanying my wife on one of her rare business trips. I had no plans on watching this particular fight, and figured it would end much like all the other Tyson fights of that era. It turned out to be one of the most memorable sporting events that I ever ended up watching on television.

Needless to say, the bar ended up being packed and the place got more and more loud and crazy as the fight unfolded.  I actually enjoyed watching Tyson get beat up, particularly by someone who was as much an underdog as Douglas.  I should get the DVD.
