Howard Kurtz Wonders 'How on Earth' MSNBC Lets Al Sharpton Be Both Activist and Anchor for Trayvon Martin Case

By Matt Hadro | March 26, 2012 | 12:19

A  A

CNN's Howard Kurtz was astonished that MSNBC has allowed Al Sharpton to be both an activist and a news anchor in covering the Trayvon Martin shooting. Near the beginning of his 11 a.m. Sunday show Reliable Sources, Kurtz maintained that Sharpton should have had to choose between activism and journalism in that case.

Kurtz asked "how on earth can Al Sharpton go there, and be an activist and stand with the parents and he asked people to contribute money and he went to the Justice Department with the parents of Trayvon Martin....And then he does his show and then he speaks at the rally again?" [Video below the break. Audio here.]

"How can MSNBC allow that?" Kurtz wondered about Sharpton whom he sees as a "commentator," but one "representing a news organization." As Kurtz pointed out in his Daily Beast column, last Thursday Sharpton called for the suspect's arrest at a rally and then hosted his MSNBC show the next hour where Martin's parents were his guests and he plugged for his rally later that evening. Sharpton then asked for money during the ensuing rally.

"It seems to me that by sandwiching his show between his activism, Sharpton was essentially covering himself," Kurtz wrote. "In what other context would a news organization allow someone to become such an integral part of the story and then represent the organization? Shouldn’t Sharpton have to choose between his dual roles?"

Guest Eric Deggans of the Tampa Bay Times thought as much on Reliable Sources, noting that suspect George Zimmerman "is starting to speak up....He has an attorney. He has a side," and that he could very well turn down an interview from MSNBC because of Sharpton's activism.

"Is he going to feel like he can talk to NBC News or MSNBC and be treated fairly when one of their signature on-air personalities has spent weeks talking about how he should be arrested and he should be in jail? I think that's a real conflict," he insisted.

Kurtz concluded that "it's one thing to have political leanings" but quite another "to be aggressive and rally."

A transcript of the segment, which aired on March 25 on Reliable Sources at 11:10 a.m. EDT, is as follows:

HOWARD KURTZ: Let me turn to Al Sharpton's role. He, of course, is an MSNBC host and, of course, he also has been for decades – and I've covered him for decades, going back to the Tawana Brawley case – a major African-American activist in this country.

And in this particular case, I wanted to play you – we've put together three different clips. This is from Thursday, Sharpton goes down to Sanford, Florida. He speaks to a rally about 5:00 p.m. You'll see that first.

Then you'll see him doing his show from the same location, where he's acting as if not a journalist, certainly a commentator. And then you'll see him speaking to the rally again, the show was at 6. The second tape is in the 7:00 p.m. hour. Let's take a look at that.

(Video Clip)

SHARPTON: We came for permanent justice. Arrest Zimmerman now! That's what this rally is about.

Nearly a month ago, a tragedy took place just beyond the gates behind me. Earlier today, Trayvon's parents, attorney and I met with the Justice Department here. And later tonight, we'll rally for justice for Trayvon.

Trayvon represents a reckless disregard for our lives that we've seen too long. And we've come to tell you tonight: enough is enough.

(End Video Clip)

KURTZ: Lauren Ashburn, how on earth can Al Sharpton go there, and be an activist and stand with the parents and he asked people to contribute money and he went to the Justice Department with the parents of Trayvon Martin.

LAUREN ASHBURN, Daily-Download.com: Right.

KURTZ: And then he does his show and then he speaks at the rally again?

ASHBURN: He's covering himself.

KURTZ: He's covering himself.

ASHBURN: Right.

KURTZ: How can MSNBC allow that?

ASHBURN: It is a little hard to see how that is possible. However, it's not like Al Sharpton is a card-carrying journalist here. I mean, he's an opinionator as we can call them in the business, and everybody knows it. So, it's not as if there's some, you know, hidden, mysterious thing about him. We know who Al Sharpton is.

KURTZ: But here he – it seems to me MSNBC can say, okay, this is such an important case and you can go and you can be an activist and you won't do your show on this subject, or you can do your show on this subject but don't be standing with the parents that are rallying and accompanying them to the Justice Department.

(Crosstalk)

KURTZ: Okay Eric, go ahead. Break in.

ERIC DEGGANS, Tampa Bay Times: Well, you know, we talked about this. We talked about this on your show some time ago. And this is exactly the conflict that I was concerned about.

It's not so much that people don't know what Al Sharpton is. The problem is that MSNBC has to cover this as a news organization and as I said, we're getting to the point now where George Zimmerman is starting to speak up, the man who shot Trayvon. He has an attorney. He has a side.

Is he going to feel like he can talk to NBC News or MSNBC and be treated fairly when one of their signature on-air personalities has spent weeks talking about how he should be arrested and he should be in jail? I think that's a real conflict. And I think that we've gotten so used to him – to this conflict so we don't say much about it when it happens.

DEREK MCGINTY, anchor, WUSA9 TV: I mean, I think you're absolutely right, Eric, and I think it's a good point. Because when you make your bones doing what Al Sharpton does, when you become – when you step over that line and become a journalist, then it's definitely a conflict.

ASHBURN: But I don't think he is a journalist, frankly.

(Crosstalk)

KURTZ: But he is a commentator representing a news organization.

ASHBURN: But he is a commentator. That's right.

MCGINTY: Exactly. And they have been covering the story. As you said, he's covering himself.

ASHBURN: Right. But they also knew – we all also knew going in, that Al Sharpton said he was not going to cover President Obama and say anything negative about President Obama. What else do you expect from somebody like that?

(Crosstalk)

KURTZ: Well it's one thing to have political leanings. Another thing to be aggressive and rally.

Simple. They have no standards or ethics.

For starters, he's ignorant.

Terry,
Evidently you were there and saw everything. You should go to the police with your information. Maybe you can dispute what the testimony of the other witness when he said that the kid was the aggressor and attacked Zimmerman. Your testimony is valuable (if you, indeed, see what happened).
If you didn't see what happened and are going on what the MSM and the rev Al is saying you may want to give the police time to investigate (Oh, and BTW inciting to violence IS a crime. Let's keep an eye on the good rev Al and the Black Panther Party). The police didn't arrest Zimmerman for a reason. They didn't have a charge. Might want to think about that before going off half cocked (no pun intended). There are probably quite a few facts that you may not know. Pull your head out so you can sit back down and wait for the investigation to get done.

The Martin/Zimmerman case is still being examined.  For you to presume you know what happened before the investigation is complete is the actual example of ignorance, whoever you are--and it's ignorance of more than just the law.

IRS Problems

As this case draws to its inevitable conclusion, it must be asked "Who benefits from this horrific tragedy"?...following the money leads to only one conclusion...racists, race baiters and race hustlas such as the "Rev" Al Sharpton.

Resist. We. Much. is in significant trouble with the IRS to the tune of over $3.5 million...and the clock is ticking
Because in the course of less than 1 week this case will be cold, he has to strike quickly like the lecherous vipor that he is. People need to be pimped and he needs cold cash. And never fear, while he's in Florida inciting domestic terrorism, his incendiary hatred at MSNBC is covered by other racists such as Melissa Harris-Perry, Toure, Karen Finney and Jonathan Capehart..So, this tragedy is tailor made for the good "Rev" Speaking of tailor...refer to Freddies Fashion Mart for other evidence of this terrorist's activity and the deaths of innocent people his hatred caused.

It's time he is called out for his racism and hatred and all people of conciousness need to rise up and demand his resignation from MSNBC and full retribution to the countless victims of his racism. We deserve better than Al Sharpton.

While I agree that Sharpton has no business performing in the roles of both a performer in and a reporter of events, that is no worse than those like Howard Kurtz introducing Sharpton as the "Reverend Al Sharpton" when they interview him on CNN. Sharpton was "declared" a Reverend when he was 9 years old by a non-denominational store front preacher - one who now calls himself a "bishop". Sharpton didn't spend a day in divintity school and his conduct is anything but reverend-like. It seems strange to me for Kutsz to complain now - when he and other media hacks have played along with Sharpton's con job as a reverend and have never called him out on that canard.

Once again, a local story has been bastardized by the national MSM and bullies with bullhorns like Rev. Not-So-Sharpton. Amazing how we've heard so little from Mr. Zimmerman's side and especially how reports about injuries he sustained (a broken nose and other head injuries) that do support his claim of self-defense have been virtually ignored. Not to say that Trayvon's death isn't tragic, but this is another case where the media has declared a man guilty until proven innocent.

Having Sharpton as a news

Submitted by Gat New York on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 1:44pm.

Having Sharpton as a news commentary show host and as an activist is consistent with MSNBC policy since all their hosts are also activists and campaigning 24/7 on behalf of Obama. Why should this be any different?

What is appalling is that as this story unfolds it is becoming evident that the initial story portraying Zimmerman as a racist vigilante and as Trayven Martin as this innocent little kid with Skittles and a can of AriZona Iced Tea is becoming an urban legand that benefits the race baitors like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and Calypso Louie as well as the New Black Panthers - and therefore the liberal media seeking a sliver of racial tension to put lift under Obama.

The neighborhood was a private community where there were a rash of crimes and Zimmerman was appointed as a community watchman. It was neighbors who spotted Martin that called Zimmerman to alert him of the man. There was a fight and Zimmerman was getting beat up by Martin. Martin at 6'3" was not little kid and he had been recently suspended from school for bad behavior.

I will not at all be surprised if this turns out to be more of a Duke Lacrosse incident where the race baiters try to hijack a situation and twist it to their advantage before facts come to light.

I wonder if Al will apolpogize for this one the way he never did for Tawana Brawley, the Crown Heights Riots, and Duke University.

It's very simple...

Submitted by c5then on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 1:56pm.

MSNBC sees no difference between one of their news people/commentators/anchors and activism. It's all the same to them.

Just like the left sees no problem with State judges (who may have to rule on cases brought before their courts) signing petitions to re-call their State's elected governor, or reporters and editors from the State's largest newspaper signing the same petitions.

To them everything is based in politics and they can act and behave in a clearly partisan manner and yet stil expect people to believe them when they say they are neutral and unbiased in their coverage of issues.

Indeed, I live in Wisconsin and have to put up with political correctness all the time. Those in power probably aren't as bad as they are in New York (just heard you cannot have a best friend there) but the only reason they aren't is because they are not as imaginative as those New Yorkers.
The paper you are talking about has been a Dem/union mouthpiece for years and, if you are serious about getting the news, you need not take that paper. You surely will not get the whole story if it has any political connotations.
The same goes for the television news here. Other places they have attractive news readers but here PC demands that those in front of the cameras be as attractive as stewardesses. Intelligence, by the way, is not a requisite to be on the air or to write for the local paper here.

According to my knowledge of the issue:

1) Trayvon Martin was a kid around 12-14 years old
2) He was shot by a cop
3) The cop was white

Today I read up on the issue and realized my knowledge was so wildly wrong. I wondered how this happened, and then I remembered I currently do not have a stereo in my car, and I lost access to cable channels a few weeks ago as my cable provider (Comcast) went to an all-digital transition. My knowledge of the issue came from the fragments of information I overhead from others and the soundbites I would see on the TVs (largely CNN) of establishments I frequent.

In other words, my knowledge of this issue is on-par with what a typical American knows about every major issue, and that's pretty sad.

BTW: What makes my situation especially sad is that I live a town directly adjacent to Sanford Florida, and it's so close I thought nothing of taking my 15MPG truck to Sanford for lunch today. In other words, I *LIVE* here and my knowledge of the issue was still controlled by what the Mainstream Media wanted to create.

It requires honor: Time and time again liberals have proven they have no honor.

Someone should ask Al: There was 54 shooting in Chicago. 10 Dead over the St Patrick's Day weekend. When are you going to March there to stop the violence?

Dear Comrade Obysmal, We Need You To Call Another

Submitted by Motormouth KOS on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 3:14pm.

Beer summit.

Come on you floppy-earred bonehead.

Please come to the pulpit and run your mouth about another healing moment.

Maybe you can lecture us about race relations like you did after we exposed you and your Reverend Wright fetish.

You probably don't even know where to start because this killing really happened, unlike the Phony Fluke Phonecall which was 110% spin by you and your Liar-in-Chief, David Plouffe'.

Dear Leader, we await the brilliance of you.

ABC News is reporting that a 13 year old eyewitness saw

Submitted by Rush Fan on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 4:14pm.

a man fitting Zimmerman's description lying on the grass moaning and crying for help just seconds before he heard the gunshot that killed Martin.

Trayvon Martin Shooter Told Cops Teenager Went For His Gun

You can not expect an out-of-control Leftist network such as MSNBC to behave within the boundaries of normal standards and journalistic ethics. Why? Leftist exhibit immaturity with a tinge of psychopathy. Sadly, for many Leftist it's more than a tinge.

An excellent description of Leftist is found in Dennis Prager's description of Leftist Jews:

Despite their secularism, Jews may be the most religious ethnic group in the world. The problem is that their religion is rarely Judaism; rather it is every "ism" of the Left. These include liberalism, socialism, feminism, Marxism and environmentalism.

Who's voice on the 911 call?

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 4:19pm.

In the interview you linked above, an anguished cry was played, that Martin's family supposedly identified as Martin. I could swear I read earlier that Martin's family did NOT identify the person heard calling for help on a 911 tape as Martin. Does anyone else remember that? Because that would support Zimmerman's assertion that he was being threatened.

This is a difficult, made worse by the media and activists fanning the flames.

The State-Run Media (SRM) Hypes Another Questionable Story

Submitted by Motormouth KOS on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 4:19pm.

I am perfectly happy to let the truth come in, in court or wherever.

And, I find it typical and very illuminating that Comrade barry Obysmal sits on his hands while the Black Panthers put a $10,000 bounty on the shooter in this tragedy.

But I was struck by the pictures in virtually every news account and the not-so-subliminal message they were portraying.

...A smiling 13 year old Trayvon Martin, not the 17 y/o who was suspended from school for drugs...

vs.

... a sullen-looking Zimmerman withouth the reported cuts and abrasions on his face from the assault by Little Mr. Innocent

So, let's keep our eyes on the facts here, people.  If the investigation shows Zimmerman acted with undue malice and/or racism, burn him. But if it shows that he was attacked like eyewitnesses are now reporting, let's see how fact the State Run Media, Al Sharpie, and Jesse Jerkson walk it back.

Apparently, Kurtz believes

Submitted by celator on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 4:31pm.

Apparently, Kurtz believes MSNBC is a news organization rather than a house organ for the re-elect Obama campaign. Howie, you have to keep up. People are laughing at you.

Congress Should Hold Hearing

Submitted by cristo on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 6:40pm.

The credibility of all media suffers when a bombastic, radical activist like Al Sharpton leads an attack on Sunday and then reports on that very attack on Monday morning. Sharpton should face sanctions and be stripped of his position at MSNBC. A print journalist could not do what Sharpton is doing and the American media has a duty to its readers to push for the sanctioning of Al Sharpton. Perhaps its time for American journalists to form an ethics panel, similar to the broadcasting review panel in England, where they might review and admonish when necessary those who abuse the power afforded them by the First Amendment to the Constitution. That would include the cowards who are leading MSNBC down this sorry path to disgrace. According to published reports, the CBC is going to hold hearing in Congress on the so-called "Stand Your Ground" law in Florida. Perhaps it's a good time for Congress to call in the heads of major media outlets and review rights protected under the First Amendment and those who abuse them.

Something I learned today about the racial groups in America

Submitted by CO2Maker on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 10:33pm.

After years of listening to activists, the media, and self-condemning liberals telling us about America's toxic racial historhy, I thought that there were only three groups of any consequence in America: blacks, browns, and whites. Those are the ones that really count. The yellows (Asians) and reds (Indians) are too few in number to be important, unless a rally is needed (but Asians don't need to apply, anyway, because they're whiter than whites when it comes to studying and school).

Anyhow, today I learned that there are blacks (Martin) and white Hispanics (Zimmerman). Whoo knoo? Now the NYT tells us that browns are whites. Damn.

Al the Hippocrit Sharpton

Submitted by Ron Sr on Mon, 03/26/2012 - 10:54pm.

Al Sharpton is in my belief the most prejudice man in America and far from a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and Jessie Jackson is the second most hypocritical preacher of hate in America.

Kurtz is obviously a racist

Submitted by RR GOP on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 12:56am.

Kurtz is obviously a racist and needs to spend some quality time in the basement of the Ministry of Truth with one of the inner party members.
