CNN Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Sandra Fluke

By Matt Hadro | March 13, 2012 | 12:22

A  A

CNN's Soledad O'Brien told her critics on Monday to "stop tweeting" her and that the particular debate over Obama's past was over. Then on Tuesday she hosted birth control activist Sandra Fluke and simply rolled out the red carpet for her guest to knock her own conservative critics.

Fluke slammed her critics for spewing "misinformation" and silencing women "regarding their own health care." CNN host Soledad O'Brien pointed viewers to Fluke's CNN.com op-ed and teed her guest up with easy questions like "How have the last couple of weeks been?" [Video below the break.]

O'Brien followed up by asking what her "highs" and "lows" had been recently, and gave her a chance to rail against the "stinging commentary" she's received from critics. O'Brien also read a Washington Times op-ed attacking Fluke's argument, and teed her up to respond.

Help us in the never-ending fight to combat the liberal media's bias and distortions. Click here to give your tax-deductible donation to NewsBusters.

The CNN host also twice referred viewers to Fluke's CNN.com op-ed, which hits "opponents of reproductive health access" for smears and trying "to silence women's voices regarding their own health care."

Panel member Will Cain of TheBlaze.com was not so easy on Fluke, pressuring her to admit that the debate was over the employer's right to determine health care benefits. "[N]o one is attempting to ban contraception or limit access and make it illegal for women to have this," Cain stated.

A transcript of the segment, which aired on March 13 on Starting Point at 8:36 a.m. EST, is as follows:

[8:36]

SOLEDAD O'BRIEN: We move on to talk about the controversy over birth control. The woman who became, really, the center of that controversy is speaking out today. Sandra Fluke famously was called a slut by Rush Limbaugh after she testified before Congress. She was speaking about President Obama's policy which would require church-affiliated universities and hospitals to provide free contraception to women.

This morning she's written a piece for CNN.com. And she says the goal is to refocus the debate. Sandra Fluke joins us live. Nice to see you. Thanks for talking with us this morning. I'm going to start by reading a little bit of your op-ed that everybody can take a look at if they just go to CNN.com. You write this, "Because we spoke so loudly, opponents of reproductive health access demonized and smeared me and others on the public airwaves. These smears are obvious attempts to distract from meaningful policy discussions and to silence women's voices regarding their own health care." You literally have been the person who's been at the center of that storm. How have the last couple of weeks been?

SANDRA FLUKE: They've been difficult to say the least, but I'm doing Okay.

O'BRIEN: Okay, what's been the highs and what's been the lows?

FLUKE: Well, it's been very gratifying to receive the support of so many Americans who have contacted me to say that they support me, but more importantly that they support this policy and believe that women need this affordable access to contraception, to an aspect of their basic health care.

O'BRIEN: That's the good news. And I know in your op-ed you write a lot about sort of the stinging commentary – not just by Rush Limbaugh but by others as well.

FLUKE: Yes. And I think one of the other low points in this process has been the misinformation that's being put out to the public about this debate. And that's one of the main reasons that I wanted to submit the op-ed, because I wanted people to understand that this is neither government subsidized contraception nor is contraception as incredibly cheap as some people have shared.

O'BRIEN: Okay, so in the Washington Times today there's a guy named Dr. Milton Wolf. He's a columnist, he's also a radiologist. And he writes this about you. "So Ms. Fluke gets a free lunch. Well, not quite. Somebody's got to pay the increased taxes, higher insurance premiums, and – mark my words –  increased contraception costs. So the government simply transfers those bills to someone else like the janitors at Georgetown law, for example, who humbly clean up after spoiled kids. I bet those janitors buy their own birth control at Wal-Mart without whining. But Ms. Fluke is entitled and I'm sure she's worth it."

When you read something like that, what's your response to that?

FLUKE: Wow. For starters, the staff at Georgetown actually already have coverage of contraception on their insurance, and the students are merely asking for the same. But I was actually speaking out about students and about low income women across the country who need access to this care. It's unfortunate that some folks have made it so much about me and my access, because that was not what my testimony was about. And I would encourage people to take a look at that testimony.

CAIN: Hey Sandra, this is Will Cain. I actually appreciate your desire to move this debate towards a more substantive position. I want to take you up on that opportunity. The conversation is about access, and you used this word several times, access. But I hope you and I can agree on one term of this debate here. And that is, no one is attempting to ban contraception or limit access and make it illegal for women to have this. The debate is about who should be providing it, who should be paying for it. Should employers determine what is involved in their compensation, determined in their health care benefits, or should the government make certain requirements of employers? Can we agree that is what this debate is about?

FLUKE: Well not exactly. I think there are multiple ways to limit access. Certainly making something illegal would be the most extreme form, but not covering it as a health care benefit the way other types of health care benefits are covered is another way to limit access. And that's what many women across the country are currently experiencing when they, even if they have insurance, co-pays can be as high as $50 a month, which is significant for a woman not making a lot of money.

CAIN: But Sandra, couldn't that same logic be applied to so many other things that health care doesn't cover, such as gym memberships? Exercise is important to health, but that's not covered by health care insurance. Couldn't that logic you're using, saying access is denied because it's not being offered to you for some reduced price, apply to so many things?

FLUKE: I think that that's not a fair comparison and most women would tell you that's not a fair comparison. There are many types of preventive health care services that are covered on contraception, things like blood pressure medication, for example. And women are merely asking that their health be taken just as seriously.

O'BRIEN: Sandra Fluke joining us this morning. Thanks for joining us. We appreciate it. And we encourage everybody to take a look at your op-ed, which is at CNN.com this morning.

FLUKE: Thank you.

O'BRIEN: And you know, it's so funny, I would add to that, isn't gym membership – isn't part of her argument if gym membership were covered for other employees? Right, it's covered for other people at Georgetown. Her point was that the janitors actually get their contraception covered. So the gym membership, I think, is a flawed analogy.

CAIN: I think It focuses on the right question. Should employers determine the benefits or should the government be mandating what employers provide?

O'BRIEN: And employers determine the benefits for some people and not others.

(Crosstalk)

CAIN: You can pay more than me, Soledad. The employers determine that as well, but I don't have a big problem with it right now, yet.

O'BRIEN: (Laughing) That's a whole other conversation.

Grow the hell up!

Hey, Sandra, declining to give you your medicine for free is NOT the same as denying you "access" to it.

Then again, maybe as a "very vulnerable young woman," you're not asking for enough help!

You need more than free contraceptives....

Mona Charen shows you how to really shake down the government!

Money grafs:

So I love the free contraceptives, but there are other things that are important to my health that you and Secretary Sebelius seem to have overlooked. What about abortion? Clearly women cannot be expected to pay for their own abortions. If we are to be functioning members of society, equal to men, then isn't it obvious that abortions ought to be paid for by everyone? Sure, some religious types may object, but they aren't sincere in their religious scruples. It's only a smokescreen for their "war on women."

There are a few more items, while we're on the subject. Have you thought about calcium supplements? Every year, more women suffer osteoporotic fractures than heart attacks, strokes and breast cancers combined. We cannot participate fully in national life with weak and broken bones. So we need free calcium supplements, along with free bone density scans and free hip replacements when the time comes. Also, weight-bearing exercise is good for bone health, so gym memberships should obviously be "covered" by insurance. And when I say "covered," I mean it the way Sebelius does: Free. No co-pays. We don't want women to be set back by decades, do we? Republicans, of course, want women to be crippled and hunchbacked. But not you.

Since it's well known that women do the majority of housework in America, it's only fair that maids and cooks be covered by insurance. It's for our health. While the maids are cleaning and the cooks are in the kitchen, we can spend time at the government-subsidized gym.

I Just Got "Fluked" Again...

Submitted by Motormouth KOS on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 12:47pm.

This "prostitute" (that's the proper definition of the word whore) for her phony "reproductive rights" campaign is at it again.  Notice, I called her a prostitute for her cause, not for her desire or proclivity to bed whatever desperate male, animal or female loser would choose to have sex with her for a cheap thrill...

But I have some questions:

  • Dear "Fluke"y, how is it that you have so much free time on your hands?  I thought studying for a Law degree required great commitment?
  • Do you feel like you are getting "fluked" by having to pay $9.00 per month for your pills at Walmart?
  • Are you sure that your brain is adequate to be a lawyer?  When I multiply $9.00 * 36 months, I just don't come up with $3000.00!
  • Did you change how your name is pronounced because you are such an idiot that you were terrified of being called a FLUKE?
  • Who called you this week?  Bill Maher?  Ed Schultz?  David Gregory?  Saul Alinsky?

The Faux "War on Women"

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 12:48pm.

Is not working. The democrats think they have a winner, but they are delusional.

What do women want? Women want a vibrant economy, where our children and our children's children won't owe six figures to the government on the day they're born. We want a government that adheres to the Constitution. We want government to get out of our way, so that we can pursue our own happiness in the ways we see best for ourselves, in the marketplace of ideas and the pursuit of wealth.

We don't care about some dumb Fluke and her personal problems. This bimbo's fifteen minutes were over last week.

$1,000 a year for condoms? Lets do some math.

Submitted by AFVet on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 12:56pm.

Someone needs to bring up the fact that if you need a $1,000 worth of condoms a year ($3,000 divided by 3 years at Georgetown) and those condoms cost approximately 20 cents a piece and there are 365 days a year, then simple math would stipulate that Sandra and her friends must be having sex 13.7 times per day, or 13 to 14 times per day. And since any single man would probably expire from having that much sex in a 24 hour period it would only be logical to come to the conclusion that Sandra and her friends would be having sex with multiple men. So what would you call a woman that has sex multiple times a day with multiple men over a 3 year period? I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Also, what would you call a woman who wants men and others to pay her to have sex? That would make us her pimp or john and that would make her a pro......!

I understand why Rush apologized, but he was only telling the truth.

Submitted by gruyere cheese on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 1:14pm.

And O'Brien admits that Fluke wrote an op-ed for CNN? I realize that contraceptives are prescribed for medical reasons to some women, but the argument here is that contraceptives are available in different venues at different pricing structures. The question is, who is going to pay for it? This should be the basis of the argument and for CNN to have Madam Fluke on to make her case and for Ms. Soli O'Brien to give her the platform to do that is simply stupidity at its best -- is like watching the Jerry Springer or Maury show. CNN has really hit the bottom of the sewer pit with this one.

Has anyone ever heard a Democrat refer to Republicans as "my friends across the aisle?"

Now, I don't watch CSPAN -- ever -- but I can say I honestly never have heard the "friend across the aisle" comment from any D in any sound bite I've seen on TV or read it in any newspaper quote. At most I've maybe heard things like "esteemed colleague" or "the Republican gentleman" or some variation.

Not saying it's never been said by a D but I don't recall ever hearing it. YMMV.

Fluke still managed to squirm around the questions and told several lies completely unchecked. Wishing Cain would've pushed more, but then, given the situation and Fluke's affinity for the victim card, can't really blame him.

#1 is the $50 co-pay myth when $50 is actually more than enough to pay for birth control pills out of pocket.
#2 is Fluke's lie that blood pressure meds are preventative care. High blood pressure is a disease in and of itself (ask any doctor), and THAT is why blood pressure meds are covered.

Also worth mentioning is Fluke's weaselly contention that 'most women would contend that's not a fair comparison', not actually refuting said comparison. No wonder Dems like Fluke, she has their dishonest and obstructive arguing style down PERFECTLY. And, of course, left-wing-activist-posing-as-a-journalist O'Brien doesn't call Fluke on it.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

Blood pressure medicine treats a specific condition, high blood pressure. You have high blood pressure, THEN are prescribed the medicine.

Fluke: There are many types of preventive health care services that are covered on contraception, things like blood pressure medication...

This woman fabricated and misinformed in her prepared testimony before Congress. And here, off script, she can't even argue intelligently.

Again, there are all kinds of things that prevent me from getting sick that can now fall under free preventive health care services. My mortgage for one, I will get very sick having to sleep in the street. My car payments, I will lose my job if I cannot drive to work, have no money, end up living in the street and get very sick. Brocolli, I will get very sick if I do not eat my vegetables. Clothing, naked people will get very sick exposed to the elements. This could go on a very long time. Insurance is there to cover you for very big expense, not pay for your toothpaste, birth control, oil changes, water softener salt, and excercise equipment.

Who wrote the column, Fluke or Anita Dunn?

Submitted by Gary Hall on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 2:29pm.

Who wrote the column, Fluke (or, Ms. Flue, as Pres. Obama referred to her) or Anita Dunn?

By now, many have heard the stories I wanted to share thanks to the congressional leaders and members of the media who have supported me and millions of women in speaking out.

Because we spoke so loudly, opponents of reproductive health access demonized and smeared me and others on the public airwaves. These smears are obvious attempts to distract from meaningful policy discussions and to silence women's voices regarding their own health care.

One has to wonder if Anita Dunn was in on the original plan [sin];  that this was all planned in connection to the WH's want to plant this, i.e., a completely staged saga from the beginning?

For a bit more, this is interesting: Sandra Fluke Represented by Mao Loving Anita Dunn.

She's fluking insane to think anyone else wants to pay for her to get fluked 2 or 3 times per day, every day, for three years. What kind of fluking lawyer would she be when she can't even fluking walk anymore? What about her fluking college courses? Is she fluking flunking spending all her fluking time fluking around with the LSM and fluking Pelosi? And where the fluke is the fluking money coming from to pay for a law degree from fluking Georgetown? Can't she fluking afford to pay her bogus $3000 her fluking self if she can afford fluking Georgetown?

And what the fluke is a "Soledad"? Sounds like another fluking taxpayer funded, about-to-fail green energy company...

I've fluking had it!!!

The Dumbie and the Slut

Submitted by mmilesll on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 3:07pm.

These two should have their own sitcom comedy-they can say anything if they are comedians, right. My big question now is, why would anybody listen to these two liers.

Hormone

Submitted by tombaker on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 5:01pm.

Hormone therapy is not contraception, it may use the same drugs, its not the same medical treatment. Treating poly cystic ovarian syndrome, is NOT contraception.

Contraception can be in the form of condoms, which has the added benefit of significant protection for STDs.

To reduce costs, free condoms would be a far better method to reduce health costs in the aggregate

Why has nobody asked Fluke how he handles protection from STDs.

Here's the political lesson

Submitted by celator on Tue, 03/13/2012 - 5:12pm.

Here's the political lesson Fluke will learn the hard way. As soon as the radical lefty moonbats have squeezed every sound bite out of her, she will be tossed into the dumpster like last week's lasagna.

Exactly, or, simply put, for Sandra's benefit,

Sandra Fluke, meet Cindy Sheehan.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.
