CNN Asks Catholic Bishop 'Why Not Get on Board' and Support Gay Marriage
CNN's Kyra Phillips asked a Catholic bishop on Thursday "why not get on board" with dissenting Catholics who favor gay marriage. Given CNN's past support for LGBT causes, they clearly would not question the motives of a religious minister favoring gay marriage.
In fact, in 2010 Phillips fawned over a Christian pastor who publicly began accepting the lifestyle of gays and lesbians. [Video below the break. Audio here.]
Phillips had cited a statistic saying 43 percent of American Catholics favor gay marriage. "So, Bishop, times are changing. Views are changing. You're changing your tactics even," Phillips said. "So, why not get on board with the 43 percent of Catholics?"
"Well their thinking is outside the realm of Catholic teaching for 2,000 years," Bishop Malone responded.
Phillips' interview with Bishop Richard Malone of the Diocese of Portland, Maine, was over the Catholic Church's new tactic concerning the state's referendum vote in November asking voters to approve same-sex marriage.
The bishop wanted to focus the resources of the diocese on educating Catholics about a "more profound" understanding of marriage between a man and a woman. But as he told Phillips, "let there be no confusion about the fact that the diocese and I will still be very involved in the effort to protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman."
Phillips hyped the diocese's change in tactics as a "stunning move." She saw the opportunity to pop the question to the bishop, "Are you softening your stance on same-sex marriage?" To which Bishop Malone responded "Not at all. It will be even stronger and more vigorous."
A transcript of the segment, which aired on March 8 on Newsroom at 11:19 a.m. EST, is as follows:
KYRA PHILLIPS: Well, in the battle over same-sex marriage, a stunning move by the Catholic Church in Maine. The church says it will not actively campaign against a November referendum asking voters to approve gay marriage. Now, that stands in stark contrast with the church's position in 2009 when it waged a campaign to overturn a law passed that same year legalizing same-sex marriage.
Now, the gay activist group, Human Rights Campaign, says the church spent nearly $2 million in the fight to repeal that law. Joining us now, the bishop of Portland, Richard Malone. Bishop, thanks so much for being with me. You're not going to take an active role, from what I see here, in fundraising, staffing, advertising, or campaigning against the gay marriage referendum this time around. Why?
Bishop RICHARD MALONE, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, Maine: Good morning, Kyra. Well, let there be no confusion about the fact that the diocese and I will still be very involved in the effort to protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman. But we've decided this year that our best efforts can be to put our energies and resources into educating our Catholic community better about the very nature of marriage.
PHILLIPS: So, Bishop, let me ask me – ask you. You know, this plan of action has changed quite drastically since 2009, you know, where you had very active campaign. And now you're moving toward education and putting funds towards that. Are you softening your stance on same-sex marriage?
MALONE: Not at all. It will be even stronger and more vigorous. One of our discoveries in 2009 was that really, many of our Catholic people in Maine could use a bit more profound understanding of how the church has understood marriage for 2,000 years. So, I decided, while we will certainly be in close contact with our allies who will lead the political battle, we intend to focus on the education and formation of consciences of our people.
PHILLIPS: Now, let me ask you, Bishop, according to the Public Religion Research Institute, right now – this is a recent survey that was conducted – Catholics are more supportive of legal recognition of same-sex relationships than members of any other Christian tradition and American overall. It reports 43 percent of Catholics nationally favor gay marriage. Is that why you're taking a different approach here?
MALONE: Well, you're on to something there, Kyra. To the extent that we can trust that those numbers are accurate – and that's always a question, of course – but that proves exactly the motivation for the approach that we're taking. We're taking no chances that our people will not have a really accurate understanding of what marriage is and to the impact on society should anyone try to change that definition of marriage.
PHILLIPS: So, Bishop, times are changing. Views are changing. You're changing your tactics even. Or your – I guess you say your strategy. So, why not get on board with the 43 percent of Catholics?
MALONE: The 43 percent who –
PHILLIPS: Who have no problem with gay marriage.
MALONE: Well their thinking is outside the realm of Catholic teaching for 2,000 years. And those are the folks that we want to focus on so they'll perhaps be able to have what I would call an intellectual conversion about a very key building-block of society, that is the nature of marriage as the union of one man, one woman.

The other week my sister's memorial was held at a rather large Presbyterian church in Lexington, SC. One of the ministers was a lady. My mind raced to Prebyterian and lesbians. My first thought was she was a lesbian. When I got back home I had to find out so I looked up the church's web site. Found out they were part of the Biblical Presbyterian Network. They had formed this because of the stance the Presbyterian Church USA had taken on the subject of homos. It was a relief to know that they did not adhere to the that. Is it me or are the media covering a lot more social issues during this election than they did back in 2008? Back in 2008 the media was talking about Iraq, Afghanistant, the economy, social issues were barely heard.
Today, it seems that the media is obssesed with social issues. While I find these very, very important. I have noticed that the media is not doing stories on high gas prices, unemployment, the on going war in Afghanistan and the fact that the president there has decided to allow sharia law for all Afghan women.
I believe the media thinks that by focusing on social issues and not the economy, Iran, high gas prices they are helping Obama.

Before asking a person who claims to be Catholic to0 comment on matters Catholic first ask: How often does he/she go to Mass and the sacraments, especially Reconciliation?. Anyone who does not go to Mass at least once a week and Reconciliation rarely or never is NOT a practicing Catholic and therefore is a Catholic in name only and his/her views on matters Catholic are worthless.
Secondly, percentages suggest that:
1) The majority of the American people are against abortion. So when are the progressives going to join the "majprity"
2) Gays make up less then 3% of the population. So why should society change it views on the age old defintion of marriage for such a small number?

Every time a bishop, priest, or even layman is asked about homosexualism or abortion, they should begin their answer by stating that such actions are mortal sin, and that persons who die unrepentant in a state of mortal sin spend eternity in hell. By the way, that is defined Catholic dogma, which must be held as absolutely true by all Catholics. If mortal sin is so detrimental to the individual, then it stands to reason that enshrining abortion and homosexualism (both mortal sins) within the legal framework and protections of governmental structure is detrimental to society.

From what I heard... in the late 1950's - 1965 range, the Catholic Church was having trouble getting QUALIFIED men to be priests (IMO, largely due to most men wanting to be married; Peter was married :-) ). So the official standards in hiring were lowered. Not to say it did not happen prior, but now since it was easier "to get in", word got out that you can have lots of homosexual activity by becoming a priest; plus get paid. So it drew in even more over time who really have no faith at all in Christ. Just doing it as a job and for the perks. Anyone hear this and what can be said of it?
I have had 2 pastors with no true faith in Christ. Very disappointing when you find out about these frauds. They go on because they see it as a living. True fakes!

I've been wondering where the limits are. If marriage is redefined to include gays, who luuuuv each other, to marry. What then: should Mormons be allowed to go back to legally practicing polygamy? And will we then (or do we already?) recognize the multiple wives of Moslems? And what about marrying first cousins?
Would it be a ridiculous stretch then to let children marry old men?
Is there really a limit if the one defined by God has been trampled on?

People today want God to change to suit them. That is not going to happen. They can and will, however, make a god into their own image. This is what we see in the Unitarian/Universalist and the Metropolitan churches, as well as the prosperity preaching churches.
If God is changeable, then he is useless, no better than we are, and not worthy of worship.

I fail to see why they are even asked this question. To agree with homosexual marriage is to refute the teachings of the Church. And if you refute the teachings of the Church, then why are you even attending mass and would want to be Catholic?

As the leading proponent on PRO LIFE issues, the Catholic Church is at the fore of all sanctity of life issues.
As far as I am aware, the lifestyle that you are trying to cram down his throat can in no way shape or form CREATE LIFE. The parts people are using are not compatible with child bearing.
You really should try to convince someone other than a Roman Catholic Bishop that they should embrace this lifestyle.

Folks I would like to take the time to open the small and limited thinking of a liberal.
Notice if you will Kyra attacks the debate from a perspective of, "hey more and more people are doing it...so why dont you?"
The sad part about this, is liberals show themselves to be trying to live entirely within a "i'll be popular if I act the way this crowd of people think I should act" perspective. Kyra believes that blindly following the anonymous teachings of some dude somewhere that peddled this ideology into her brain, that she will be more popular with everybody if she just follows along like a non-thinking lemming.
What Kyra misses completely is that Catholics as do most other people of faith, have a belief in an all powerful CREATOR, and there is nothing a man can say (especially since man is created by the CREATOR), that usurps the authority and doctrines of their CREATOR, all of which makes complete sense.
This CREATOR/created being perspective isnt even a concept she seems remotely familiar with. She believes that she can use her own "rationale" of "hey everybody else is doing it, so why not you", like a clueless little school girl to sway a priest away from his core belief that there is in fact a God, and he is Holy, and he is ALL Powerful...Folks for the priest and people of faith, Kings kneel before God...in fact...ALL, including Kyra will bend their knee before God on the coming day of Judgement.
