CNN Honors Same-Sex Couple, Suggests Obama Could Benefit From Supporting Same-Sex Marriage
In lieu of President Obama's Hawaiian vacation, CNN highlighted the plight of a Hawaiian same-sex couple that will legally celebrate a civil union come January 1st, but desires federal marriage benefits that do not apply to same-sex couples. In a one-sided and sympathetic report, White House correspondent Brianna Keilar painted the picture of a President who could make a gain at the voting booth if he legalizes same-sex marriage.
CNN analyst and National Journal's Ron Brownstein strongly hinted that Obama could be alienating some of his liberal base by sitting on the fence over the gay marriage issue. He made the case that Obama may be losing socially-conservative Democrats anyway, and could "mobilize" voters by supporting same-sex marriage. [Video below the break.]
"Monica and Donna are part of that coalition," Keilar said referring to the coalition Brownstein said Obama "could mobilize" in the coming election. "They voted for President Obama in 2008, and while they think he now privately supports their desire for a federally-recognized marriage, they say that's not enough," Keilar added.
At the center of the story was a Hawaiian same-sex couple that desires the legal rights of married couples, and is waiting on President Obama to support same-sex marriage. CNN interviewed no one from the other side of the debate opposing gay marriage.
"We don't want to keep waiting and waiting," one of the subjects told CNN at the end of the sympathetic report. "What good does it do if you support it personally, but you don't put it out there for everybody to know that this is your stand?"
Keilar herself sounded almost hopeful as she analyzed Obama's "evolving" stance on gay marriage. "As a candidate, Obama supported civil unions, though he said the issue of marriage is best left up to the states. But this year, he's signaled he may change his mind," she reported.
A transcript of the segment, which aired on December 29 at 4:44 p.m. EST, is as follows:
BRIANNA KEILAR: (voice-over) When President Obama and his family ring in the new year here on Oahu, many same-sex couples in Hawaii will celebrate for a different reason. Civil unions become legal here on January 1st.
MONICA MONTGOMERY, planning civil union ceremony: Now our state has finally said we support you, and that leaves us a really good feeling.
KEILAR: Monica Montgomery is from Kailua, the town where the Obamas are vacationing. Her partner of 33 years, Donna Gedge, went to the same high school as President Obama. Shortly after midnight on New Year's Day, Gedge and Montgomery plan to seal their civil union with a ceremony.
(on camera) Why is it so important to do it at that very moment?
MONTGOMERY: Because we've waited so long.
Normally I wouldn't be functioning at 12:30 in the morning. That's not a time I would choose, but we want to do it, and do it right away.
KEILAR: (voice-over) They call it a step in the right direction. Because there's a big difference between states allowing civil unions or marriages, and the federal government condoning marriage. Same-sex couples do not qualify for federal rights afforded to heterosexual married couples – like social security benefits, immigration rights, or the ability to file federal taxes jointly. Even in Hawaii, marriage is defined by law as between a man and a woman – a position shared by Hawaii's most famous native son.
RICK WARREN, pastor, Saddleback Church: Define marriage.
President BARACK OBAMA: I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now for me as a Christian –
(Applause)
KEILAR: As a candidate, Obama supported civil unions, though he said the issue of marriage is best left up to the states. But this year, he's signaled he may change his mind.
President BARACK OBAMA: As I've said, my feelings about this are constantly evolving. I struggle with this.
KEILAR: The majority of Democrats and even independent voters support same-sex marriage. Observers like political analyst Ron Brownstein say the President appears to be playing to socially conservative Democrats who tend to be rural, older white voters without a college education.
RON BROWNSTEIN, senior political analyst: But the paradox is that he's already losing those voters in big numbers. He lost about three-fifths, for example, of both non-college whites and white seniors in 2008. They voted even more heavily for Republicans in 2010, and by avoiding these issues, he may be disappointing the actual coalition that he could mobilize in 2012.
KEILAR: Monica and Donna are part of that coalition. They voted for President Obama in 2008, and while they think he now privately supports their desire for a federally-recognized marriage, they say that's not enough.
DONNA GEDGE, planning civil union ceremony: What good does it do if you support it personally, but you don't put it out there for everybody to know that this is your stand?
We don't want to keep waiting and waiting.
(End Video Clip)
KEILAR: Now the White House is very sensitive to the suggestion that President Obama has not fully delivered for gay and lesbian Americans – pardon me, Wolf – you'll frequently hear White House officials touting what he has delivered on, the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, and of course the Justice Department has stopped defending that federal ban on same-sex marriage, questioning the constitutionality of it. But ultimately, Wolf, it seems like this will be a decision for the courts. There's a number of legal challenges winding their way through the system right now, but it's very possible, advocates think, that they won't see a resolution to this until after the election.

THIS IS A BALD FACED LIE, Obama stated that he PERSONALLY is against same sex marriage and THEN spewed this "wishy washy voting present evolving garbage".
The thing is, he is against gay marriage, but not the hateful way some Republicans are against gay marriage.
He is allowed to "evolve" or as people like me would say - speak out of his mouth and his skinny backside.
Depends on the crowd.
The media whores have allowed this lie to remain unchecked.
How stupid of CNN.

Why won't Obama support gay marriage? Maybe this:
Here's an analogy. We all know that Wal-Mart has resisted unionization of it's employees since it's inception. They know if they succumb, they'll be forced to raise their prices, put less back into company expansion, and ultimately hurt their bottom line followed by the reduction of employees nationwide. The unions on the other hand, always looking for a fight and seeking greater power, keep shouting how poor the Wal-Mart worker is treated and -to some extent subliminally- how well those in the union shop do in comparison. Whether Wal-Mart eventually breaks down is of little import; the unions gain strength both politically and among their own members so long as the fight lasts. Sure, they get stronger if Wal-Mart does capitulate, but only temporarily as the eventual degradation of the company only weakens the union's bargaining power down the line. UNITE is not stronger now that KMart is closing 100+ stores.
But what if Wal-Mart simply sold everything to the SEIU? Or what if the UFCW was suddenly given the keys and told to run the company as they see fit? The unions would be left having to bargain with the union, and figure out a way to create a profit in order to stay afloat. The first thing they'd do, would be decertify the union. They'd have no choice.
If Human Rights Campaign, GOProud, LGBT, and others can effectively bring about legalized gay marriage, they'll have won their last fight. The war will be over. No more perpetual whining. No more claims of bullying or discrimination. And more importantly, one less fundraising talking point for Progressives. Think about it.

The democrats do not want the resolution of any problem. They get votes and support for claiming they support certain issues. The more problems Americans have the more democrats can manipulate voters into supporting democrats. Legislation that is bad for America is good for democrats.
If the GLBT people were given everything they want many would lose much of their interest in politics. In fact many would possibly support candidates other than democrats because they would no longer see an overriding self interest in voting straight democrat.
I'm with you until the end

I really believe there will be no stopping the insistence upon accepting every sexual perversion as "normal." The gays aren't making something new called "gay marriage." All they are doing is giving a new legal definition to the word "marriage." Expect this same tactic for the redefining of "consenting" and "adult."
It will take another 40 or 50 years, but with constant soft news spots like this, we'll see story after story about how loving and caring the 45 year old and 9 year old are. They only want to be accepted by the public and of course, get gubmint benefits too.
I agree that there are people within the movement

who really want to achieve these goals, but I think in the case of "Why won't Obama just come out for gay marriage?" the answer is that it's not politically expedient -on his side of the aisle- to do so. It's certainly not due to conviction... Sorry, I had to compose my self there - conviction- I kill myself. As I was saying, it's certainly not some deep-seeded belief that he can't part with that's preventing him from "caving" on this issue. I really think the Gay Lobby, the agenda setters, those rallying the troops on their behalf, wouldn't need to rally them if this issue was passed.
It's also possible that they're looking at the race card and saying, "See what we did here? We instituted all these laws in favor of minorities, and now that they've failed to actually help anyone, AND we've lost the ability to claim racism and have it mean anything, we need to make sure this issue remains an issue, or we'll lose the 'bullying' card too."
Win the war and defense spending goes way down. If you're in the business of defense, war is profitable.

...from him openly supporting gay marriage would be very limited as a result, according to one of my friends who teaches Poli Sci (he is a rare Republican in that position!). Overwhelmingly, the two largest minority groups supporting Ear Leader already voted for him despite being relatively socially conservative based on the California voting demographics, granting that these may not apply across the USA. Of more interest is the military vote changes based on the repeal of DADT, which have yet to be fully tested in a vote as large as 2012.

The couple in the article say that Obama's stance and actions are "not enough", but when the rubber meets the road they will vote for him, and they will probably donate and campaign for him as well because "he's better than the other guy." And that's exactly why Obama continues to basically lie about his personal feelings on the issue while tentatively pushing the agenda forward. It's ridiculous to suggest he change tactics at this point since he doesn't have a primary race and no one is going to challenge him from the left on this issue.

My original point isn't so much Obysmal talking out of his ass, but THE FACT the media ignores HIS ACTUAL WORDS:
"I personally am against same sex marriage".
PERIOD.

Homosexuals represent about 1.7% of the population. Why in God's name are we giving them marriage as though they have a right to it?
SAN FRANCISCO — Gary Gates, a demographer-in-residence at the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy, a think tank based at the University of California, Los Angeles has a new estimate of the percentage of adults who identify as being gay or lesbian.
Gates’ best estimate, derived from five studies that have asked subjects about their sexual orientation, is that the nation has about 4 million adults who identify as being gay or lesbian, representing 1.7 percent of the 18-and-over population.
This subject has been debated since sex researcher Alfred Kinsey said in the 1940s that 10 percent of the men he surveyed were “predominantly homosexual.” Later, a much respected University of Chicago study estimated the figure to be closer to the 3 to 5 percent and that oft cited figure has been the conventional wisdom in the last two decades.
