CNN 'Moderator' Finds GOP Eight Times as Dishonest as Democrats?

[UPDATE at end of post: Cooper responds via Politico.]

Tuesday night’s Republican debate in Las Vegas will be moderated by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. The CNN promo urges viewers to “See if what happens in Vegas gets them closer to the White House.” But Cooper’s nightly Anderson Cooper 360 often looks like it’s trying to keep Republicans away from the White House.

CNN advertises Cooper’s regular segment, “Keeping Them Honest,” with the question: “Who's Anderson keeping honest tonight?” Apparently, CNN and Cooper find Republicans are much more dishonest. Since July, a review of “Keeping Them Honest” segments found 24 reports tagging the Republicans with dishonesty, compared with just three for Democrats – a ratio of eight to one.

In a review of programs from January 1 through October 14, Cooper’s show (with occasional guest hosts) has aired 164 of these "Keeping Them Honest" reports, and 80 have focused on political issues involving the two major parties, Republican and Democrat, or the two prevailing political movements, liberal and conservative. Of those political reports, Cooper focused exclusively on Republicans or conservatives 45 times, compared to just 13 for the Democrats or liberals, although 22 of the reports hit both sides.

The rest of the "Keeping Them Honest" reports, 84 in number, either didn't pertain to American politics or focused on a nebulous political group that was neither liberal nor conservative. Topics included affairs in the Middle East like the Arab Spring and the Libyan government, domestic stories like the Casey Anthony trial, and disasters, like the nuclear plant troubles in Japan.

Fourteen segments covered events in Syria, and 12 more centered on matters in Libya. So there was one more "Keeping Them Honest" report on deception by the Syrian dictatorship than there were reports on Democrats (13).

Turning Up the Heat on Republicans as the 2012 Campaign Marches Onward

Cooper's "Keeping them Honest" segments have targeted Republicans and conservatives at all levels of power, including the presidential candidates, congressional Republicans, and even state and local officials. Yet Cooper's nightly fact-checking has been far lighter on the President and administration that’s currently in power, providing little coverage of the ongoing Solyndra scandal or other administration foibles.

Cooper reported once on Solyndra on September 14, and then never ran another "Keeping Them Honest" segment about it. In contrast, Cooper devoted no less than five of these reports to updating previous segments he had done hitting Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann.

In addition, while Cooper devoted more than a few reports hitting both parties in Congress, he also used five reports since July 1 to hit Republicans in the House and Senate. None of his segments in that time period targeted only the Democrats in Congress.

One of the segments targeted conservative Republicans in particular. On September 22, Cooper claimed that demanding spending-cut offsets for Hurricane Irene spending marked the “first time ever” someone had used a hurricane as a “political wedge.”

“Conservative Republicans voted against the C.R., or Continuing Resolution, because they said there weren't enough spending cuts to offset the $3.6 billion in disaster relief money,” Cooper declared. “Now you can decide for yourself if you think funds for disaster relief for agencies like FEMA should only be available if they're offset by spending cuts elsewhere. This country is in some pretty tough straits for sure, but this is the first time ever, ever, that funding for people affected by things like tornadoes, flood, hurricanes, fires, you name it, have been used as a political wedge.”

Not only has Cooper’s “dishonest” meter been pointed at Republicans by 24 to 3, but 17 of the 24 stories critical of Republicans focused exclusively on GOP presidential candidates. Since July 1, three "Keeping Them Honest" segments have targeted President Obama. In that same time frame, Cooper has offered seven critiques of Bachmann. In 2011, Bachmann was targeted 12 times -- five more than the President. By comparison, there have been four on Rick Perry and three on Mitt Romney.

In just the past two weeks, Cooper has also run two critical segments on Herman Cain, whose poll numbers have risen dramatically in the last month. Cooper even admitted that he was focusing on Cain because of his newfound popularity.

"We are taking a closer look tonight because Republican voters have made him [Cain] a leading contender for the presidential nominee – or nomination I should say," Cooper explained on his October 6 show, adding that his surge in the polls was "a sign that Herman Cain is no longer a voice on the fringe." Cooper said of Cain’s statements that “Some are contradicted by facts, some seem barely tethered to reality.”

Everyone expects the media to vet presidential candidates and provide their audience with a clear and critical look at a candidate's background, political beliefs, and past statements. But Cooper’s record suggests he feels a much more glaring need to scrutinize Republican candidates and even provide follow-up stories to their “scandals.”

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Taking It Easy on the Democrats

Even though Cooper offered 13 “Keeping Them Honest” segments on the Democrats, four of them were devoted to Congressman Anthony Weiner's Twitter scandal over a few days, more than Obama received in over three months.

And, while Cooper never hit a Republican from the right, he did targeted Obama from the left. On the June 21 edition of AC360, Cooper scrutinized the President's position on gay marriage over the years – for it in the 1990s, against it when he hit national politics. He asked what Obama really believed and if his current opposition was just political calculation. He cited Obama spokesmen being questioned at the far-left Netroots Nation convention and in the White House briefing room by a reporter for the gay Washington Blade newspaper. Cooper asked “human rights activist” Cleve Jones: “Does the Democratic Party take gay Americans for granted, feeling that, well, look, they're not going to go to the Republican Party?”

In addition, five of the times Cooper’s show offered a “Keeping Them Honest” critique hitting Democrats, they also produced a “Keeping Them Honest” segment on Republicans for the same hour. This suggests CNN couldn’t stand to leave the viewer with a distinctly anti-Democratic feeling.

For instance, on January 19 Anderson Cooper began his show with a "Keeping Them Honest" story of Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen from Tennessee comparing Republicans to Nazis. Later in that same hour, he followed-up a story from the previous night on a Florida GOP representative who wanted to make it illegal for pediatricians to ask the parents of their patients what Cooper called  “one simple question. And the question is, is there a gun in your house?”

On September 14, Cooper led his show with a follow-up segment criticizing Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.). Only later in his show did he address the Obama administration's Solyndra scandal. That segment was also the only "Keeping Them Honest" story he did on the Solyndra scandal.

Anderson Cooper prides himself on holding powerful figures accountable for their words and actions. He brags of his fairness in trying to elicit answers to basic questions. The recent record shows he hasn't offered Republicans a fair shake.

UPDATE, 2:45 p.m. EDT: Cooper was asked by Politico about the MRC's study. His response is provided below:

KEACH HAGEY, Politico: The Media Research Center is just out with a report that finds that your segment “Keeping them Honest” tends to target Republicans far more often than Democrats – 24 Republicans since July, compared to 3 Democrats, a factor of 8-to-1. Why?

ANDERSON COOPER: I think we are looking more closely at a Republican field that has a number of candidates. There’s a lot more to talk about with nine different Republican candidates out there. If it was a Democratic primary, we’d focus on Democrats. And there are certainly plenty of times when we’ve focused on President Obama or the Congressional Black Caucus.
I don’t think it’s accurate to say that we are just focusing on Republicans, but there is a very heated and very interesting Republican primary going on, where you have a number of Republican candidates making statements. As you get more into the general election, the focus will change.

GOP Debates and Republican establishment

Submitted by FaulknerFan on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 8:21pm.

Why in the world does the GOP continue to have progressive activists moderating their debates?

Seems to me that it's the Republican establishment (mostly NE Liberals ) who are in the Ruling Class and generally try to curry favor with the establishment press and their democrat "friends". Their world is Washington, New York and all things eastern and they are as embarrassed by the conservatives in "fly over country" as the liberal Democrats hold them in contempt. They control the Republican party and the primary process. They forced McLame on us last time and will likely see that Romney is the candidate this time. After all, he's one of them.

The lemmings already have been duped so they're just being fed their oats like good little Olivers. I do agree that the RNC needs a less establishment chairman which could very well be someone like Palin, Bachmann, or even Rubio. Any of those people or ones like them would be more than happy to tell the Noreasters to go stow it!

This is why I will never ever contribute to any national GOP organization. They are completely clueless.

So how many on-air personalities (hosts, guests, etc) do they actually have that would be considered:

- neutral
- left of center
- right of center

I'd say the total number of left of center out numbers the other two combined by a factor of at least 20 to 1.

Yet, CNN constantly advertises itself to be non-partisan. Absolutely laughable. They're slightly to the right of MS-NBC, which is has the needle on the meter pegged and bent against the left side of the dial.

Well AC. We find CNN 8 times as dishonest as legitimate outlets

Submitted by Gary Hall on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 12:35pm.

Well AC. We find CNN 8 times as dishonest as legitimate media outlets (there is one or two, correct?).

Let's look back to CNN's disgraceful coordinated and calculated manipulation of a CNN Democrat Presidential candidate's debate, in November, 2007.

Noel Sheppard covered it well:

  • CNN Stocked Audience and Controlled Thursday's Debate Questions
  • There's a great deal of controversy brewing concerning implications that CNN not only stocked the audience at Thursday's Democrat Presidential debate, but also controlled the questions attendees asked.
  • So much for Wolf Blitzer not caving into pressure from the Clinton campaign.
  • *****Update: It looks like all six "undecided voters" set up to ask questions at the debate were plants. More at end of post!
  • [..]
  • Add it all up, and CNN stocked the questionning members of the audience with -- at the very least, as who knows what else the blogosphere will identify?!? -- a former intern for Sen. Reid, a former head of the Arkansas Democrat Party, and a prominent Muslim leader.
  • Honestly, folks, the Democrats made a huge stink about not appearing in any debate sponsored by Fox News for fear of its biases. Yet, it seems a metaphysical certitude that FNC, with all the focus upon it, wouldn't have dared exhibit such obvious partiality.
  • In fact, just imagine the uproar that would have emanated from press members if Fox had employed such shenanigans. This likely would have been the lead story of all three broadcast network news programs Friday, as well as featured every hour on the hour at CNN and MSNBC.
  • Of course, maybe this explains why the Democrats refused the FNC debates in the first place, which would be an interesting story for a news magazine like "60 Minutes," "Dateline," or "20/20" if they weren't all vested in the same hypocrisy.
  • Liberal media bias? What liberal media bias?

Here's hoping that if one of the "selected random" questions from the audience looks a bit fishy tonight, that one of the candidates is well versed in how CNN operates to ask the question of the panel:

  • GOP Candidate: Whew. That's some question there. Remembering back to how CNN lied to the American public about what "undecided voter" actually implies, how can we be confident that CNN didn't load and/or plant these individuals once again?

For the MSM, if we didn't report it, it never happened. They're too busy turning stones to dig up dirt on Republicans to look at the heap of garbage that the Democtats have left in front of them. Of course you'll find the numbers skewed if you highlight every mistatement by the right, no matter how trivial, and only address the most glaring lies by the left.

Notice also that the "truth meter" is filtered through a left-sided lens. Of course Obama doesn't lie because he regurgitates the MSM socialist ideology. On the other hand, Republicans are a pack of lying b@stards because they keep trying to tell people the left's ideology is wrong.

"Keeping Them Honest"

Submitted by greggy on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 2:22pm.

At this link off of the Drudge Report:
http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2011/10/17/ac360-behind-the-scenes-at-cnns-la...,
to a story on AC "moderating" the debate, I posted the following question:
"Why is Anderson Cooper, who made a slur against the Tea Party by saying they had testicles in their mouths, being given the moderator's duties at a Republican debate? In addition to being one of the lowest moments in all of American journalistic history, Anderson's derisive, classless comment shows he hates Republicans and is incapable of being a fair moderator or questioner. If Anderson had even a pretense of professionalism, he would have recused himself from the job."

Immediately, the status on my posting said "Your comment is awaiting moderation". However, on the forum, right next to the comments box, CNN's stated policy says "Comments are not pre-screened before they post". If comments are not pre-screened before they post (or DON'T), then why is my comment "awaiting moderation"? That seems dishonest to me.

So, I posted a second comment "In this forum CNN states that "Comments are not pre-screened before they post". Yet my comment, which was perfectly factual, fair, reasonable and accurate, and not profane or mean-spirited, says "Your comment is awaiting moderation". So, apparently comments ARE pre-screened, and possibly censored out, before they are posted – contrary to the stated policy."

Once again, immediately the status on my posting said "Your comment is awaiting moderation".

So, I call B.S. on A.C.'s blog - sorry Anderson/CNN, just "Keeping You Honest". And I therefore find you 8 times more dishonest than any Republican out there..

Maybe you should stick to your core competency - like using low-brow gay-sex-act puns to bash conservatives, and making Gerard Depardieu "poo-poo" jokes followed by five minutes of giggling like a 13 year old girl. Leave the politics to the grown-ups.

(and by your adoption of that particular name I can only conclude honesty is a quality which attracts your unrelenting interest) it should be noted that Cooper's actual words were "it's hard to talk when you're teabagging" as opposed to the more explicit terminology which you have recited.  That's not to suggest Cooper's wording (and its unmistakable implication) was excusable--it wasn't and isn't--but it is also true he has publicly admitted his utterance was "stupid and silly", the type of self-criticism one rarely encounters from the legions of dismissively arrogant, ego-bloated, celebrity news/opinion peddlers fouling the sorry state of modern journalism.

Furthermore, in another instance [see below], even NewsBusters reported on Cooper's on-air apology for his failure to challenge Shirly Sherrod's accusation of racism leveled at Andrew Breitbart during a prior interview.  How often have you witnessed a public mea culpa in which a television host excoriated himself for a similar omission?  Not very, I wager.

Since CNN viewers generally don't watch FOX, Cooper is doing his viewers a service by exposing the lies of a might-be president.

Submitted by killa37 on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 7:20pm.

I thought that FOX was 'faux' news, or 'not a news channel'.............but I'm guessing that it's OK for the rest of the MSM to NOT expose the non-stop lies of Boy Barry and the REGIME, huh???

Did you really think that?

I dunno,

Submitted by killa37 on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 8:12pm.

I dunno, pumpkin...............we were talking about 'lies' - and you stated that you thought it was FOX News' place to point out lies by Obama and the REGIME..........which could only lead me to believe that the other MSM news outlets DON'T have any responsibility to point them out. But then you say you can small lies like a fart in the shower. So either you're IN the shower, or you're holding ONLY Fox News accountable for showcasing lies by the REGIME............and CNN and other MSM outlets are there to point out possible lies of Republican candidates.

Remember, pumpkin.............I'm a dumb blue-collar conservative country boy, so I'm not 'nuanced' like you are - I see things in a lot more 'black and white'..........although I could get in trouble for making such a racist statement!!!

I didn't call anybody black (and I certainly would NEVER call our poser-in-chief 'black'), but your 'nuance' statement is the most honest thing I've ever seen you write.

Now, back to the original subject - is it OK for CNN and the rest of the MSM to 'do their viewers a service' by trying to showcase lies by the Republican candidates, but not point out the never-ending lies of the Obama REGIME???

BTW, that wasn't a personal invitation, you flatter yourself.

This is an open board, and with that invite, it included everyone. Even, alas, liberals. I wanted to make sure everyone understood that BS would not be tolerated. By me. At all.

Fortunately, the lurkers were too afraid to join the convo and dropped out immediately. So there was no need to remove anyone. I can't speak for Matt....although I joined his chat later on, an interesting group, and some of the non-regulars.

To paraphrase Pooper-Scooper's reply to the subject of the 8-1 'dishonesty' statement:'Don't expect me to try this on Obama or any Democrat - I'm here to get them re-elected, so that's why I"m going after these Republicans. And we have focused on President Obama and the Black Caucus - I have the knee-pads to prove it. And as we get into the general election, I will change my focus - I'll only have one Republican that I'll be trying to destroy.'

'First time' someone's used a hurricane as a 'political wedge'?

Submitted by Tailgunner on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 7:29pm.

If Anderson Cooper doesn't remember the huge political advantage the left gained from Hurricane Katrina, he's incompetent to do his job.

If Cooper does remember but chooses not to mention it he's a %$^&# liar who's not fit to be trusted.

Why any GOP candidate would give Cooper (or anyone else at CNN) anything but the back of their hand is impossible for me to understand.

This is worthy of Orwell's 1984.

Know When the Debate is All Republicans Against Him.

Submitted by Avitar on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 7:56pm.

The Republican primary voters will know that anyone not sending Anderson Cooper staggering away shell shocked is giving aid and comfort to the enemy! Only Newt Gingrich can say anything nice about Anderson Cooper since he is the only one who has note the useless gotxha questions from Chris Wallace in the other debates.
On the other hand if he brings up anything from a progressive and treats it as fact all gloves should come off and all of Time/Warners’ fundamental dishonesty since they started as butt boys for then New York’s Governor Franklin Roosevelt in the 1920's is fair game.

Submitted by shadowman on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 9:05pm.

No matter what the GOP candidates do the left will never be fair to our candidates on interviews or debates. They will always choose questions that are leading to try and make our candidates look bad. Why can't we have GOP moderators only. The Democrat's always have very Liberal moderators and we should have Conservative moderators at all interviews and debates.
If you are a Conservative candidate of any kind anywhere why the heck would you put yourself in in the enemy's grasp to be made fun of. How about Brit Hume and Sheppard Smith or any Conservative moderators.
Our candidates should never ever do an interview with any hard core lefty, ever.
