Rachael Ray and Joy Behar Gush Over Bill Clinton: 'Charming,' 'Brilliant,' 'Honest'

By Matt Hadro | September 20, 2011 | 17:44

A  A

HLN's Joy Behar and guest Rachael Ray fawned over former President Bill Clinton on Monday. "They don't just hand out those Rhodes scholarships for presidencies," remarked the Food Network's Ray, who also called Clinton "incredibly charming" and "so honest with people."

Behar was especially enamored with Clinton. "I find him extremely sexy, don't you?" the HLN host asked Ray, adding that Clinton was "brilliant." She even compared his presidency with Reagan's.

"I think people are going to look back on his presidency the way they look at St. Ronald Reagan," Behar raved. "They'll say St. Bill Clinton eventually. Because he had his problems during his administration, but in retrospect he did a great job.

"But he left the country with a surplus of money and goodwill," Ray chipped in. "Yes, he did, which was squandered," responded Behar.

The two were discussing Ray's project of countering the rise of child obesity. Behar hyped the fear that Republicans will cut funding for public school food that needs to be "offered for 12 months a year," according to Ray.

[Video below. Click here for audio.]

"I hope that just because we're going through now and going through these systematic cuts where everything seems to be back on the table, that we don't look at that as one of the things that's being targeted," Ray fretted.

"The Republicans will want to cut that," Behar noted ominously. "But you know, they can't," replied Ray, who argued that healthy food for children will help prevent the rise of healthcare costs in the future.

A transcript of the segment, which aired on September 19 at 10:44 p.m. EDT, is as follows:

JOY BEHAR: It was a very funny mockup. Now, you and Bill were quite cozy. Did he come on to you?

RACHAEL RAY, host, Rachael Ray: President – no. President Clinton was there the day we launched, in all seriousness, the day we launched our children's initiative. I launched a charity four years ago now that had three goals –  to eradicate hunger; the next door neighbor to hunger is childhood obesity.

BEHAR: Right.

RAY: So we have a huge childhood obesity awareness campaign.

BEHAR: Right. Which I will talk to you about in the next segment.

RAY: OK. And then -- that's how we originally met, was our common ground with childhood obesity and we also have a scholarship program. We are partners with his Alliance for a Healthier Generation. So every once in a while, the president comes by to give us his check-up on where we're at with the obesity issue. While he's there, he is gracious enough to take audience questions and do some Q&A. And that clip there when he's talking about who will play him, somebody said well, why didn't you say George Clooney? And he said, because he's playing a candidate in an upcoming movie. And I'm a politician. I want to see how people react to that first.

BEHAR: I find him extremely sexy, don`t you?

RAY: Which?

BEHAR: Bill Clinton.

RAY: Well I think that –

BEHAR: George Clooney, of course, that goes without saying.

RAY: You know what I think it is? I think that he is incredibly charming. And he looks –

BEHAR: And he's brilliant.

RAY: They don't just hand out those Rhodes scholarships for presidencies. But you know what it is, is whether he's talking to a young person who's struggling with some weight issues or he's talking to an audience member, or he's talking to his interviewer, whoever – he has that charisma, you know, it's like a tractor beam. He really looks straight into your eye and he remembers every single thing he's learned about you or read about you. And he's just so honest with people. He's very direct with the audience. And that's why I just enjoy his visits so much. And I think tomorrow's visit is actually the most candid he's ever been.

BEHAR: I think people are going to look back on his presidency the way they look at St. Ronald Reagan. They'll say St. Bill Clinton eventually. Because he had his problems during his administration, but in retrospect he did a great job.

RAY: But he left the country with a surplus of money and goodwill.

BEHAR: Yes, he did, which was squandered.

(...)

BEHAR: I'm back with Rachael Ray. We're talking about the new season of her show and also something near and dear to her heart, kids and food. Okay. How are we going to get these kids? They're on a very bad track.

RAY: I think that the only level playing field to both eradicate hunger among American children and to lower our childhood obesity rates, and all of the related disease rates in this country is through our school food programs program, our public school foods. They need to be offered 12 months a year. We need to improve the quality. We just got through a big increase, the first one, in a very, very long time. And I hope – I hope – we discussed this with President Clinton in tomorrow's episode – I hope that just because we're going through now and going through these systematic cuts where everything seems to be back on the table, that we don't look at that as one of the things that's being targeted.

BEHAR: The Republicans will want to cut that.

RAY: But you know, they can't. No one in this country can afford the catastrophic health care costs of today. Multiply that times kids that are going to grow up and already at 9 and 10 years of age they're on heart medication, they are on cholesterol medication. They are taking all of these adult drugs.

BEHAR: Blood pressure.

RAY: That's right. You want to do the math – we can either pay now, and give them a few pennies now, and a little bit more time –

BEHAR: I don't think that's how politicians think. I think that they think, oh, let's just save money now. If they were worried about the future, we wouldn't be in the mess that we're in.

RAY: That's why you have to be really loud. I mean, the one thing I learned from spending last summer doing a lot of lobbying, is that the loudest wheel, if you give them the voice, they will use it.

BEHAR: But what they will say, Rachael, is why don't the parents worry about this? Why does the school have to worry about it?

RAY: They do. And it's also a byproduct of poverty. And there is a lot of people that will show you the math between hunger and the very next step up is obesity because it's the only quality of food they've been able to afford.

I seem to recall Rather making that remarkable statement. Perhaps he was alluding to Leftists, who are permitted to lie to protect their "Truth," as pro-abortion advocates later admitted to doing under oath before a Congressional committee on partial birth abortion. They deliberately lowballed the total unmber of partial birth abortions every year in order to maintain their storyline about the procedure being rare.

Rather would probably call them honest despite the lies. I doubt he would grant the same to the Right.

Photographic Memory

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 6:21pm.

Clinton did possess the rare gift of a photographic memory when it came to people's names and faces. If he met you once, he would remember who you were twenty years later, and ask how your wife and kids where doing, by name.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a fan of Bill Clinton, and being from Little Rock, I knew all about his antics well before he ran for president. Everything you heard is probably true, and then some.

Some women are just attracted to abusers. That's a fact.

It is completely idiotic to believe that childhood obesity will be ended by school lunches. Do they think kids have no access to any other food? The idea of school lunches as a primary food source is just a nanny state fantasy where the government and not the parents control the lives of the children.

I believe if the nanny staters had their wish all children would be whisk off to a government boarding school until the children reach adulthood (which by government reckoning is somewhere around 26 years old)

Link, please....

Although Clinton helped organize anti-Vietnam War protests in London while a student at Oxford and did tour a number of European cities during that time--including Moscow--I've never seen a shred of credible evidence he participated in any anti-American demonstrations in the Soviet Union, KGB organized or otherwise, except as conjured by the very fertile imaginations of the anti-Slick Williams.

as is typically said of liberals; hose the surrounding scenery with your caterwauling about lies, ideological hatred, and treating the truth as inconsequential, when in fact it is you, the liberal, as per your ilk, who obfuscate, deflect, and point fingers.

Good Lord, does none of the information that appears in the articles here on NB's reference lying assed, phony liberals and Democrats and the absolute BS they spout get through to you?

Why, of course not.  Said articles are full of lies about those you have elected to run with; to be a part of; to kow-tow to, are they not, Jer?.

You are of course required at that point to call ALL who denigrate your liberal Democrat tribe members in any way, shape, or form; out as the REAL liars and ideological misfits - otherwise you would be forced to admit that  PROVEN liars like Slick Willie, Pelosi, Rangel, etc., etc., ad nauseam, are the real liars of the political world.

You continually post as though everyone here is wrong and you are the lone voice of truth and reason; all the while suggesting through smarmy assed insults and put downs of conservative posters that your input is the last word in the demonstration of intelligence, knowledge, and life experience, and further implying that your posts should be taken as gospel because you have "criticized" both liberals and Democrats.

You have always had a preference for actual facts, eh?

You, a self avowed liberal.

A professional Democrat.

The Clinton defender, apologist, and worshiper; as well as an excuse maker for Obama .

Always making yourself out to be truthful, reasonable, and a purveyor of neutrality because you have the balls to call out politicos on both sides of the aisle.

What a f**king joke.

You are nothing more than a complaining, whining liberal on a conservative site whose only recourse is to accuse any who fit the conservative mold as playing loosely with the facts.

If that were not the case, all here would generally tend to agree with you.

As that occurs only rarely, I am confident you are hewing to the lib mantra - "Accuse the other side of doing what in actuality YOU are doing".

Too bad they had to run that liberal Yapper. Same with Ray. You just lost a fan gal. Say fuel and souls on board .................. good luck .......... you just crashed and burned in my book.

Good will after Clinton

Submitted by Radical1979 on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 9:38pm.

This could be attributed to the fact that terrorists were allowed to attack the U.S.S. Cole without consequence. The fact that Clinton never addressed that and other terrorist actions prevented any other countries from feeling badly about us as they planned the destruction of our country.

Radical...While the anti-terrorism policy of the Clinton

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 10:48pm.

administration may be and will be the subject of continuing, contentious and legitimate debate, the lack of retaliation against Al Qaeda by the outgoing President in response to the Cole incident is certainly understandable and clearly defensible.

We should recall that not only did the attack take place less than a month before the 2000 election--which resulted in a new administration and a Republican presidency--but that the investigation affixing blame for the assault on the Cole was still ongoing as the inaugural date approached, and, moreover, bin Laden's culpability, although strongly suspected, had not been conclusively established until nearly the end of Clinton's term. In fact, I believe George Tenet suggested that even then the findings were preliminary.

As such, a retaliatory strike by Clinton at that stage would have been highly questionable in that it would have forced the incoming administration into a policy posture it may have preferred not the adopt. Indeed, this was borne out by later statements by Secretary Rice who affirmed that President Bush made the decision not to retaliate because he viewed such as simply more "swatting at flies" when the threat of Al Qaeda required a more comprehensive approach and permanent solution.

My take on Clinton was that he was never passionate about defending this country and it's citizens. He was one of the Vietnam era peaceniks who thought talking could solve all the aggression in the world. There were other attacks during his presidency that he also did not respond strongly to. Bush made clear after 9/11 that we would find the culprits, and that we, as a country, had the resolve to bring them to justice. I never felt that way about Clinton.

Submitted by Jer on Wed, 09/21/2011 - 12:26am.

My take is entirely at odds with yours. My impression was that he was extremely passionate about defending America and its citizens, his earlier views on Vietnam notwithstanding. There have been many patriots on both sides of the aisle who opposed the Vietnam War and/or opted out of military service during that era.

World Trade Center bombing 1993, Mir Amal Kansi attack 1993, U.S.S. Cole bombing 2000--Clinton's response was what?  Legalistic nonsense.  Clinton pardons FARC members 2000, the list goes on.  Clinton's defense of America was nonexistent, and his defense of terrorists was apparent and consistent.  To be completely generous, I'd say his diplomatic naivete prevented any definitive and strong defense.

But he was good at bombing aspirin factories when he needed to turn attention away from Monica.

I still like Rachael Ray, she has personality and is fun to watch. I watch her cooking shows but draw the line at her talk show. She needs to shut up and cook.

I like the cooking shows on the Food Network. Guy Fiero and the new on Jeff the Sandwich King are my favs.

I really wish these celebs would keep their politics to themselves.

"Useful Idiots"! I knew there

Submitted by Semus on Wed, 09/21/2011 - 9:50am.

"Useful Idiots"! I knew there was reason I didn't like Rachael (Behar isn't worth discussing, and after this Rachael isn't either), other than the fact that she doesn't really cook anything except hamburgers, and/or glorified hamburger, tuna helper one skillet meals, hardly gourmet quality. If she's a chef she hides that fact well. I admit I'm getting old I remember when actual cooking was taught on TV, it's very rare now.

As far as the Clinton's get use to it.

They're just testing the waters. We'll be hearing a lot from or about the Clinton's. One of two things will happen, this is all preparation for a Hillary possible run in 2012 or just before the 2012 election they'll (The Clinton's) magnanimously like true communists/democrats, throw their support firmly behind the LEADER of the democratic party Obama.

I wish I could be surprised just once by these people.
