CNN Decides to List Seven 'Meanest Budget Cuts'

By Matt Hadro | April 15, 2011 | 18:45

A  A

CNNMoney.com ran a provocative piece Friday listing what it determined to be the top "meanest budget cuts." The website laid out seven government programs that are victims of the recent budget compromise – programs that provide assistance to the poor and support humanitarian causes overseas.

Most of the individual cuts make up a small fraction of each program's annual budget, and a Democratic source is quoted multiple times downplaying the significance of the cuts. Don't tell CNN, however, as these cuts are apparently "mean."

One of the cuts was a seven percent cut to housing assistance for Native Americans. But according to a Democrat staffer on the Senate Appropriations Committee, the program's funding stood at $70 million more than that requested by President Obama.

Also listed was a roughly seven percent cut to a food stamps program with a 2010 budget of $7.3 billion. CNN quoted the Senate Democrat staffer as saying that fewer people rely on the program for assistance. "The agency noted that the final cut was actually less than President Obama proposed," CNN added.

Community health centers are hit with "mean" cuts according to CNN, but the Senate Democrat staffer told CNN that the centers will receive $400 million from the health care bill.

Get used to it

Submitted by lockestep on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 6:59pm.

I say get used to this non-sense, but don't take it sitting down. Educate yourself and prepare to debate libs who spew this crap. The advantage of being on the right is that we can not lose an honest debate on these issues as long as we keep ourselves informaed.

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 3:18am.

MEAN? Like lockestep said we need to stop taking this ABUSE!

Doing outrageous MEAN taxes since last Friday. Yes 1/52 of the year gone, doing taxes. Total BS. WHY do we accept this? Politicians are traitors spending our money! Enslaving us!

If we got a 3 year tax holiday we could have our house paid off. They ARE spending OUR money!

The huge transfer of wealth into an endless black hole of waste. Like we don't know how to spend our money. They take it and spend it somewhere else! It is the SAME money! HOW DOES THAT CREATE WEALTH or JOBS? Robbing Perter to pay Paul does not create wealth! That is MEAN!

These brainwashing media and politicians can shove it! They need to be punished. Fire them! Fire them! Fire them!

How ironic!

Submitted by CobraMan on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 7:17pm.

Administration on Aging

"This agency, which helps senior citizens navigate the maze of federal bureaucracy and maintain independent lives, saw its budget of over $2 billion cut by $16 million."

How ironic! An entire federal agency(!), funded by the taxpayer, is needed to "navigate" the "maze" of "federal bureaucracy" of yet another federal agency that is also funded by the taxpayers. Can you say "government waste on display?" This is a perfect example of the stupidity of expansive government.

Here's an idea: remove the majority of those bureaucratic impediments, close the now unnecessary agency, and save us billions of dollars every single year while still supplying financial help to the elderly, the amount of which isn't being reduced at all. But, I guess that would be "mean," especially to the thousands of union represented federal employees that not only create and enforce the bureaucratic mazes, but also help people navigate them, thus creating, for themselves, additional employment opportunities, to the detriment of the very same elderly they're supposed to be helping.

The worst part about it is that THIS is what Obama refers to as "responsible government!" He is right, though not in the way he thinks. The government itself is now responsible for enlarging the government, all  through its own bureaucracy, which is just what the Founding Fathers feared most.

Government waste,

Submitted by MacWell on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 10:59pm.

You said a mouthful CM.
The only problem we will face is how to train these drones to do an honest day's work. They're so used to doing every step up the bureaucratic ladder in triplicate, it would take most of them 3 days to do a good day's work in the private sector.

In my view the meanest thing

Submitted by inquiringmind on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 7:16pm.

In my view the meanest thing the government can do is spend to the point that the dollar is devalued and inflation rates raise out of control and the average family can't afford the simplest of items.

A loaf of bread, a ticket to a movie, or a tank of gas. These slowly become luxury items and then you have a permenently trapped underclass. Forget middleclass. These liberals who claim to be for the little guy are doing the exact opposite of what they represent themselves to be.

CNN's 7 meanist things list..

Submitted by Gary Hall on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 8:05pm.

This would suggest that we're not likely to see CNN list the 7 worst (inevitable) things which are going to confront the future of the US if this or similar serious budget cuts are not passed,  ya think? Me thinks that when the country collapses, it's likely to seem rather "mean."

My federal budget suggestion-

Submitted by big.league.slider on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 10:10pm.

Here's a suggestion that will reduce the federal budget by over $3billion per year, will reduce the number of federal employees by over 25,000, will eliminate an unconstitutional federal bureaucracy, will empower every single state government, and won't cost a dime:  Simply turn over control of every acre of national park land to the state park system in which it exists.

Sure, the enviro-libs will scream.  But the obvious response is, "What's your objection? Is your state government really so stupid and incompetent that it can't even manage a park?"

Messiah before country

Submitted by Jerry Mack on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 10:11pm.

If the Messiah and the Dims along with their media supporters spent 1/5 as much time on the economy and trying to find a way to create jobs as they do on bashing conservatives,we would not be having this discussion. I have difficulty in determining why Cnn can not see the unemployment problem and it's effects. Yea I know that they are very liberal. But they must also be blind and deaf. Their support of the Messiah is a detriment to our country.

Uh, Jerry Mack?

Submitted by MacWell on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 11:34pm.

That surprises you why?
The problem, as I see it, is that not enough people believe what's going on, is really going on. It's difficult for me to believe that Americans could allow this nation to get to this point.

This demagoguery works

Submitted by ThisnThat on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 9:51am.

C-SPAN took some calls yesterday during one of the budget votes. A 69-year old woman got on the phone and was very angry at Republicans taking all her Medicare money, and leaving her defenseless to take care of herself. Well, she didn't make this up out of thin air. She's obviously listening to the MSM, the dims, and obama saying exactly the same things. So it works, folks. Facts be damned; honesty be damned -- the dims are a lying bunch of socialist perverts who can get their lapdog media types to do their bidding for them.

And how many times have I heard in the past two weeks about how America is going to kill tens of thousands of people around the world? All because we want to cut foreign aide? Is nothing off-limits to these demagogues? We can't save one thin dime because that dime means the difference between life and the grave to thousands? This is total crap, and I've never, ever seen it spread so thick before.

Didn't you know that we're

Submitted by motherbelt on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 10:03am.

Didn't you know that we're already living on a shoestring and a prayer, not to mention that we're not even coming close to living up to our obligations.

We have already cut every blessed nickel that we can!  We're barely at subsistence level! Cutting any more will certainly be a catastrophe!!

Absolutely!

Submitted by Blonde on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 10:07am.

Besides, we need to raise lots and lots of taxes to pay for all that cool infrastructure like high speed rail, wireless internet (?), etc. Because you know, we have potholed runways at our airports. The President said so. And Lindsey Graham needs $40,000 to do a study on deepening the Port of Charleston.

ThisnThat excellent point.

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 11:11am.

ThisnThat excellent point. We may laugh but she sure isn't. How can we get the "other side of the story out" to overcome outright lies of the socialist progressives? Beck is effective at not sugar coating the potential downsides of our situation. I know my parents love to watch him & were upset hearing "their taking him off."

I think the most effective organization would be like a conservative AARP. I think someone mentioned one but I don't recall the name. Beat them at their own game & cut the legs out from under their continued long running lies. Provide both sides & point out how the other side is lying in large measure on many issues. Provide better products too that are a better value. Promote traditional values that our Country was founded on. We would not be in the s-hole if not for lack of morals. Bankrupting the country, printing excessive money are both immoral. "There I said it."

Indeed, the demagoguery works - and the MSM simply loves it..

Submitted by Gary Hall on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 12:14pm.

Indeed, the demagoguery works - and the MSM simply loves it..

FACTCHECK.ORG - Obama's Social Security Whopper

  • He tells Social Security recipients their money would now be in the stock market under McCain's plan. False.

FACTCHECK.ORG - Scaring Seniors

  • An Obama-Biden ad says McCain supports "cutting benefits in half" for Social Security recipients. False!

Now, even though the liberal Annenberg's FactCheck.org pulled themselves out of the gutter and went after the obvious there, during the heat of the fall 2000 election's during the final stretch, I'd dare say that not a soul in the national MSM either reported it.

Furthermore, certainly none of our favorite national Main Stream correspondents, anchors, political pundits would have ever ventured to ask either Obama or Biden, or their folks, about their lying scare tactics (the bastion of their existence).

Let's take a look

Submitted by The Irishman on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 10:12am.

Community health centers will take a hit, but will receive $400 million from the health care bill, a bill vowed by this congress to be repealed. Specifically the budget cuts call for a $600 million reduction for the remainder of the year, even though Obamacare funding won't be received in time to compensate for this year's shortfall.  I'd rank this  a 5 on the 1-10 scale of meanness.

Cuts in food stamps seem to be precisely what everyone asked for, as well as what is necessary to assist those using the program.  This gets a zero.  I don't know what CNN wants.

Land Mine Removal.  Unless we left the mines, or if the mines are on American soil, I'm not too concerned.  But I do see the need for such a program, so I'll rank this a 2 based solely on humanitarianism.

Native American housing assistance.  Again, more money budgeted than the president asked for.  Either he doesn't care about American Indians, or CNN is off base yet again.  Zero.

US Institute of Peace.  Having never heard of this organization prior to the story, I'd really need to see a list of accomplishments for which the IoP can take credit.

Heating for low income families.  A $390 million budget cut they say is justified because the cold season is over for the year, apparently forgetting that November and December can also be cold months.  Depending on the outcome it's too early to judge.  But I'd bet there are plenty of other cuts much meaner than this.

Administration on Aging.  Again, Who knew this existed?  .8% of the $2 billion budget, amounting to a paltry $16 million.  Oh, who am I kidding?  $16 mil would be awesome right about now.  Not to mean though, so I'm giving it a 1.

if CNN thinks these 7 pathetic budget cuts are mean, just wait..

Submitted by Dave. on Sun, 04/17/2011 - 3:18pm.

...until America rolls over and sinks, and people wake up one morning to find the funds in their accounts aren't worth the paper they are printed out on.

And that is exactly what is going to happen if this hideous spending orgy isn't soon halted.

Sometime thereafter, politicians and their MSM enablers are going to be hunted by some seriously cheesed-off people with dogs and guns.

We'll see how 'mean' they think things are then.

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Sun, 04/17/2011 - 5:55pm.

And I don't see many R's talking in a straight forward matter regarding the seriousness of our current situation. Silver went from 9.5 to 43. in 2.5 yrs. That is a lot less purchasing power real fast.
