CNN's Acosta Derides Conservative Debt Ceiling Pledge as 'Body-Slam and Pile-Driver' Extreme

By Matt Hadro | June 29, 2011 | 18:08

Apparently, a pledge to reduce the deficit and cap spending long-term and vote for a strict balanced budget amendment is an extreme measure. CNN correspondent Jim Acosta, reporting on the conservative "Cut, Cap, Balance Pledge," quipped that "it's not exactly cut, cap, and balance. It may be more body-slam and pile-driver."

The pledge, sponsored by numerous grassroots conservative groups, entails signers promising to oppose an increase on the debt limits unless three conditions are met. The conditions are that the spending cuts must reduce the deficit "next year and thereafter," caps on spending must be instituted to bring about a balanced budget, and Congress must pass a balanced budget amendment.

The amendment can only be passed "if it includes both a spending limitation and a super-majority for raising taxes, in addition to balancing revenues and expenses."

The "extreme" petition's signers include Tea Party candidates but also some mainstream Republicans like Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), and presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who promised to sign Wednesday afternoon.

A transcript of the segment, which aired on June 29 at 3:50 p.m. EDT, is as follows:

[3:50]

JIM ACOSTA, CNN correspondent: This has been a pretty interesting issue on the Republican side. Basically, up on Capitol Hill, one of the Tea Party favorites Jim DeMint had said if you don't sign what he calls the "Cut, Cap and Balance Pledge," he's not going to get behind you. And of course, he brings a whole lot of Tea Party support behind him. Well Mitt Romney, who is right now really the frontrunner in the GOP nomination battle, he's up on Capitol Hill today trying to line up Republican support behind his campaign. And he has said, and his campaign has said this afternoon that Romney will sign the Cut, Cap and Balance Pledge.

You may be asking, what is that all about? Well basically, it's a pledge to not only reduce the deficit by a large amount in order to approve a debt ceiling hike, but also bring forward with that a cap on spending over a number of years in advance after a debt ceiling agreement is reached. And then also a balanced budget amendment. So it's really a three-fold approach that Republicans would like to see to bring the deficit under control. And it's not exactly cut, cap, and balance. It may be more body-slam and pile-driver.

Taxing and spending, taxing and spending!

Here's the Democrat plan in a nutshell: tax, spend, tax, spend and spend some more...The Dems are simply addicted to taxing and spending and any attempt to wean them from that habit is seen as "extreme".

Good point on Hannity tonight.

Wasn't watching the tube, but overheard one of the guests describe Greece as being in withdrawal from years of nanny-state welfare.

The US version is yet to come, and to be honest it scares the living daylights out of me.

More like a an idiot on steroids; the world would be better off if we could expunge correspondent's commentary and opinions. It's rarely unbiased; it's typically nasty or degrading; and more importantly, it's more then likely void of any facts since the commentator is usually reacting from reading a headline.

Rush said it best today...

[paraphrasing] why have a debt ceiling at all if it's going to be bumped up every time it is encountered?

MM says: 'the debt ceiling is a myth, just like myth of the democrats wanting to help the poor become... not poor! (the more poor the better for democrats). Or democrats supporting women's rights (they really mean only liberal womens rights) the conservative 'sluts' can fend for themselves. Or how about this one: 'energy independence' by shutting down domestic energy sources. Or how about jobs jobs jobs that inconvenient three letter word when they overregulate, overtax and drive jobs out of the country.
Don't even get me started on how much the liberals want to edumicate our child'ns so they can get out of their parents basement and get a jobs!

I do not watch CNN for more than 30 secs at a time, but it is hard to imagine ever taking anything they say seriously.

Should I wonder if these guys ever complained about raising the debt ceiling when Bush was in office?

NB, thanks for bringing to

Submitted by jdhawk on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 2:37am.

NB, thanks for bringing to our attention the "Pledge!" Now, it only our Republicans representatives can hold to it will see duhbama blink first on this debt ceiling issue.

Given his poor fund raising efforts and his dip in the polls, we just might get there. Our representatives need to hang tough.

Unfortunately, their track record with regards to the this year's budget was extremely poor - less than $60 billion in cuts in a $3.8 trillion dollar budget.

We'll have to wait and see . . . .

Yea, well, we all know how much "journalists" hate having to stay within an expense budget. So that comment doesn't surprise me at all.
