'Morning Joe' Skips Over Potential Democrat Senate Candidate's Ties to Abu Ghraib Scandal

By Matt Hadro | April 19, 2011 | 13:45

A  A

Former Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez is expected to be a Democratic contender in the Texas 2012 Senate race. However, when Politico's Mike Allen brought news of his probable candidacy to MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Monday,  he omitted the fact that Sanchez commanded the U.S. ground forces in Iraq while the infamous abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison took place.

Sanchez, when he retired from the Army in November of 2006,  told a local paper that the Abu Ghraib scandal was "the sole reason" he was forced to retire. The scandal occurred in the summer and fall of 2003, and involved humiliations, beatings, and sexual abuse of prisoners at the hands of U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad. Sanchez was the commander of coalition forces in Iraq during that time.

The story of the abuses became public in the spring of 2004. Sanchez removed himself from overseeing the investigation into the abuses and was replaced as commander in Iraq in June, 2004.

Politico's chief White House correspondent Mike Allen, in announcing Sanchez's possible candidacy, simply reported that Sanchez was a retired general and "commanded U.S. troops in Iraq."

To be fair, according to the USA Today, the Army reported in 2005 that an inspector general's investigation "cleared Sanchez of accusations of dereliction of duty in his oversight of prison operations in Iraq."

Sanchez was never directly connected with the abuses. The AP stated at the time of his retirement that "Sanchez has not been accused of any misconduct but has been criticized by some for not doing more to avoid mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners." Sanchez still claims he did not know of the abuses at the time he was commander of forces in Iraq.

That said, in the fall of 2003, Sanchez allowed certain interrogation tactics to be used at the prison. The general personally had to approve the tactics for each instance of use.

The Washington Post's Phillip Carter wrote in 2008 that "rightly or wrongly, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez will forever be connected to the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal."

Maybe so, but that won't stop biased outlets like MSNBC's "Morning Joe" from noting the matter as a potential and relevant issue in a campaign for public office.

A transcript of the segment, which aired on April 18 at 6:25 a.m. EDT, is as follows:

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Politico has news, Mike, about a contender for Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson's seat there, who is running as a Democrat.

MIKE ALLEN, chief White House correspondent, Politico: Yeah Mika, this really surprised me. Retired Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commanded U.S. troops in Iraq, lives in San Antonio, is going to be the Democrat, probably, to run for that seat. Democrats had had their eye on Texas. That was one of the six states that they hoped to switch over. They talked about a six-in-'12 flips next month – next year. But you need a candidate to do that, and there have been no new Democrats in Texas, tons of Republicans. But Gen. Sanchez is someone that could appeal to businessmen, could appeal to conservative Hispanics. Democrats are very, very excited about this one.

But in Texas, Democrats are saying Sanchez’s positives outpace the negatives that might come with his connection to Abu Ghraib.

Of course they are!

If he were a Republican, do you think ANYTHING could outpace that connection?

More hypocricy

Submitted by povertypimpin on Tue, 04/19/2011 - 2:59pm.

It just shows that whenever the left criticizes it's always political and has nothing to do with morality. Can you imagine if this general ran as a Republican? That's all we would hear, ABU GRAIB ABU GRAIB. Their base will vote for anything with a D next to the name and throw in a few hundred thousand hispanics who vote the surname and you've got yourself a senator.

Every Texas state wide election has resulted in nothing but gloom for liberals in Texas for the past twenty years since Ann Richards slipped by. And with your Obami at the helm this season, Mr. Liberal, it's going to be a cake walk for every Conservative on the ticket.

TEXAS: the land where Democrats sure as hell don't say that on their campaign signs!

Is the military brass a breeding ground for liberals?

Submitted by Chris Norman on Tue, 04/19/2011 - 9:14pm.

Just how many of these most public of the military top brass are, at least, moderate liberals? There seems to be a pattern developing here (Colin Powell, Sanchez, Wesley Clark) of declaring their liberal political views after leaving the service. Do these guys identify with big government because they see the military as a big social program or something? At least, this should lay to rest the media myth that the military is inherently conservative. It's the same with so many of the big business and banking honchos.

Certainly there is a supply of liberals in the Officer Corps within each service, but I think the more recent publicity is brought about by fellow liberals. They probably promise these guys strong financial support if they'll run on the Dem ticket hoping it will lend the Dems some credibility on national security issues.

It usually emerges, however, that liberal military officers are largely pacifistic, and expend more energy trying to prevent war then doing their job as warriors. They're really an anathema to military service.

Big Gov U

Submitted by Chris Norman on Tue, 04/19/2011 - 10:12pm.

BK, Bottom line is the upper echelon of military bureaucracy a good training ground for future liberals who put their faith in big government?. Since the military is one thing where  the government must do well (and it has done fairly well (despite the usual waste, duplication, etc,) does it lead to a faith that big government can do a lot of things well? Just wondering.

Not sure Chris

Submitted by bkeyser on Tue, 04/19/2011 - 10:41pm.

The military officer corps is made up of college graduates- almost all from everyday colleges across the country. The number of regular officers from the academies can't be more than 15 or 20%. I suspect many of the liberal officers have a thread of liberalism from the outset of their career, though I'm sure just as many are made during their career.

The military, especially the offcer corps, can be very political. While its counter-productive to have progressive political views while wearing the uniform, clearly some are in it for reasons other than sacrificial service. Some use it as a stepping stone.

Its funny though, I never looked at my six years in the USMC as being a part of the federal government. I didn't think of myself as a government employee. Maybe some do, but I never felt that from any of the guys I served with. Of course, I wasn't a zero (sorry officers and gentlemen...).

I just told my VERY liberal

Submitted by amyshulk on Wed, 04/20/2011 - 6:13am.

I just told my VERY liberal friend {mad they didn't get the public option} that if those on the left want all those perks: free health/dental/vision care, free food, and housing too, they should join the military!!!

She laughed, but I meant it - these perks are given as an offset to their low pay and for their service, and the left wants these perks for everyone, no question!!!

As to Officers being liberal? I've NEVER understood it. They put in their time and EARNED what they got, and they want to just give it away to those who do nothing in return???

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

LTG Sanchez is an affirmative

Submitted by jdhawk on Tue, 04/19/2011 - 11:19pm.

LTG Sanchez is an affirmative action promoted officer that lacked any knowledge of other than conventional war in the mold of mechanized warfare on the plains of Europe per Army Field Manual 100-5. He was completly flummoned when the Iragis, with little choice, turned to guerrilla warfare tactics to at least stall the inevitable defeat of their cause.

Couple this with his enmity of Ambassador Bremer and you had the makings of a disaster. It was only AFTER he left and General Petreaus was put in charge of the training, equipping, and mentoring of the Iraqi police, army, and other security forces and his subsequent assumption of command from General Casey for overall conduct of the war in Iraq did the war really get turned around in our favor. The rest is history.

The point of the above is the people of Texas don't deserve a failure and a liberal as one of their US senators. Let's hope the voters of Texas see it that way.

Although you must admit that is inability to successfully conduct a war may actually qualify him to be a Senator. /s

This Texas voter certainly will not be voting for him.
