Mika Brzezinski: Rich White Men Need to Contribute More to Budget Solution

By Matt Hadro | April 11, 2011 | 11:33

A  A

Emphasizing that all but one of the top 30 income earners in the United States are white males, Mika Brzezinski clamored that it is time for the wealthy to pay their fair share and help solve the budget crisis on Monday's "Morning Joe."

Co-host Joe Scarborough and liberal New York Times columnist Charles Blow were in the midst of a debate about cutting entitlement spending when Mika chimed in. After Scarborough argued that making cuts to middle-class entitlements is necessary for the country's fiscal health, Brzezinski quipped that the rich should be contributing more to solve the budget deficit.

"I just don't see why with top earners doing better than ever, why they can't be a part of this equation," she complained. She referenced a list in Sunday's New York Times  of the top 30 earners in the U.S., a list that included "some of the people who drove us into the ditch."

"All white men, by the way, just one woman," Brzezinski said of the list, "and I didn't see any African-Americans." This is from the same pundit who argued that the financial crisis would have been averted had more women been in charge.

"We need to balance things out," she said, echoing a tired liberal argument, or the country will have "class warfare on its worst level."

A transcript of the segment, which aired on April 11 at 8:14 a.m. EDT, is as follows:

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Let me say this very clearly – it is middle-class entitlements that are going to bankrupt this country if we don't slow it down. Why? Because of course, nobody wants to stand up and do what's responsible to middle class entitlements, because elderly middle-class Americans vote in massive proportions.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I just don't see why with top earners doing better than ever, why they can't be a part of this equation. I'm sorry, it would just be a lot easier to swallow. And if you looked at the New York Times yesterday, and you saw the top 30 earners, and how much money they are making all over again, including some of the people who drove us into the ditch – all white men, by the way, just one woman – and I didn't see any African-Americans – I think we have a problem that we need to address as a society.

Sorry, and I agree with everything you have to say --

SCARBOROUGH: White men?

BRZEZINSKI: But we need to balance things out. (Crosstalk) And you're going to have class warfare on its worst level.

MIKE BARNICLE: Is that not – is that not perhaps the biggest political mistake that Barack Obama has made thus far –

BRZEZINSKI: Yes. That's correct.

BARNICLE: – not planting the flag on the $250,000-and-up tax cut –

BRZEZINSKI: I completely agree.

BARNICLE: – and saying "No."

Another open letter from a friend of mine:

Dear Mika,

Mika, here's an idea that apparently is too above your pay grade for you to comprehend: how about the Federal Government especially your fellow liberals stop over-spending? That would be a nice and logical place to start. But instead you and your liberal buddies want to spend more with the incredibly STUPID notion that by spending more, the government will get out of debt.

Every try that with VISA, Mika? Care to explain how spending more with a VISA card will get you out of debt? What's that, Mika? That's silly? You can't do that?

Tell your buddies that.

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 12:19pm.

Throw out the tax code. Same rate across the board. No depreciations; no deductibles except for a standard $40,000 deductible for everyone. No write-offs for raising honey bees, or installing solar panels, or buying electric cars, or not raising livestock. Zip, nothing.

Then the Treasury will have all the money it needs (provided the Congress balances the budget against what the USG receives in tax revenue), and the Washington lobby industry shrinks to insignificance.

Hey Mika

Submitted by Boil It Down on Tue, 04/12/2011 - 2:36am.

There will always be different classes of people. It's just folks like the ones you admire so much that create the warfare element. Pointing at white guys as the enemy is divisive and foments that warfare, which makes you one of the agitators. The fact that you have a platform on Morning Joe to pit one group against another makes you a major promoter of class warfare. The fact that your favorite president pits people against one another in order to advance his ill conceived policies doesn't make it the right thing to do.

By the way, the crony capitalists that you always give a pass to are the ones who need to be investigated for not carrying their part of the load. It is just plain wrong to stereotype all rich "white" guys and all capitalists together in order to push your divisive agenda. Have you not noticed that the country has become vastly more polarized since Obama's election?

At any rate Mika, study what you're going to talk about, double check your premises and give a lot of thought to the consequences of your words before you let those disjointed thoughts rattling around in your head come spilling out. Perhaps you should give some consideration to becoming a productive part of the Morning Joe panel rather than an obstacle. -bidn-

Here's a thought; until all of the rich liberals are willing to pony-up 75 or 80% of their TOTAL wealth, there can be no discussion about taxing just the rich white men (i.e. rich republicans and independents). And you and I both know that just ain't going to happen. Remember, in the liberals mind only republicans and independents are rich.

Remember folks, FREEDOM isn't Free. It is bought with the blood and sacrifice of the men and women of the U. S. Armed Forces.

What part of 'stop spending' do these people not get? Are they mentally challenged? Are they convinced that spending 90% of everything we make by bureaucrats is the path to utopia? Is it that their multimillion dollar paychecks blind them to the realities of the other 99% of America?

Sure, how much do we need, Mika?

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 1:21pm.

There are about 8 million households in the U.S. with a net worth of at least $1 million.

In order to retire the national debt, each household would have to pony up approximately $1.8 million.

Of course that means that most of these people would be wiped out and the day after the government balance sheet reaches zero it'd start accumulating again ... and probably by far more than the current $4.5 billion a day since most of these people would be on the government dole.

I'm guessing it'd take about 6 months to get back to $1 trillion ... or less.

Until these socialists start recommending a "wealth tax" instead of an income tax, i won't take them seriously.

Not that i want it to happen, but it is dishonest to suggest that Gates, Buffet, or the other bega-rich, have any problem with higher "income taxes" since they pay less as a percentage of their income than i do.

It's the working middle class and wealthy, people who earn "paychecks" that bear the brunt of the taxes.

Hay, idiot, rich people pay income taxes too, ya know!  As a matter of fact, they pay the MAJORITY of income taxes, ya twit!

And, not only do they pay the biggest share of income tax, they also pay additional taxes on any income which exceeds what the government feels is a "fair" amount, known as a Capital Gains tax. So, in reality, they're being taxed twice! What part of that equation don't you understand?

Hay, I got an idea:  Let's add a THIRD federal tax to those "filthy rich" people.  We'll call it a "static asset tax," a tax on the value of any property or possessions that exceed the "average" amount. The government can then "share" that tax revenue with anyone who's total value is less than one third of that of the richest Americans. You can call it the "Asset Equality Tax Act." I bet you liberals would just LOVE that!

I too found your post offensive. But more importantly, it was a sterotype and inaccurate.

The majority of "entitlement" recipients are 38% white, 37.6% black, the remaining 7% are hispanics and asians. The majority of food stamp recipients are white because unemployment is currently highest among whites. Simple explanation is that this country is 72% white,. Poverty is a higher percentage among blacks than whites but the numbers are greater for whites simply because of population.

The majority of medicare and medicaid recipients are white. If you live in a "nanny state", there are state run programs that do provide "welfare" to illegals. However, that money costs the state because they do not receive matching federal funds for those programs. Medicaid does not pay except for emergency services. Therefore, many medical providers lose money from federal funds since illegals are not eligible for those funds. The loss of matching funds is met by various state income tax, sales taxes and property taxes.

There is no question that our entitlement system does need reconstruction but not based on race or ethnicity nor us old ones with white hair, not blonde.

The first entitlement program that needs to be revamped is CONGRESS and Federal Government.

There are multiple official websites you can go to and study this very complex issue. But if you would rather spew sterotypical and racial lies, you become the same type of commentor as the biased liberal elites. Offensive and inaccurate and the reason NB exists.

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 10:45pm.

You missed the point the point of my sarcasm. Dear Mika is only concerned about rich white men paying, she also continually plays the white guilt and race hustler angle and Charles Blow is a huge proponent of reparations. My point was just how far is she willing to support her convictions. She made the statement on purpose to drive home a point.
I can understand why you might be offended but I will not apologize for my statement.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

So... you mean lip service is

Submitted by amyshulk on Tue, 04/12/2011 - 4:15am.

So... you mean lip service is what she gives {black men are just as good - no, better and more deserving than white men} so why shouldn't Mika prove it?

Just because she and her ilk project their true feelings on the rest of us {that we hate/scorn/etc. blacks} doesn't mean we flip the script back at them - that's playing at their level.

I get your point, but I don't agree it's how we should fight them and their bigotries.

The "rich" pay more than I do

Submitted by rbosque on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 4:34pm.

The "rich" pay more than I do already whether they are black or white. We have a graduated tax rate in this country and the top half pay all of it. If she wanted to be "fair" and increase tax revenue, her Democratic friends would have to tax the other half that doesn't pay taxes. Cutting up the gov't credit card will do wonders as well.

If she still feels bad about it, she can always write a check to Uncle Sam.

Right. The "entitlements" that peeps paid into - were FORCED to pay into - are going to bankrupt us, while all the TRUE welfare won't? The D's slogan should be "Kill old people, more for poor people"!!!

Mika, the top 1% of wage

Submitted by jdhawk on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 6:03pm.

Mika, the top 1% of wage earners pay 39% of all federal taxes. That's up 2% since 2000.

The fact is the 47% of American pay no taxes at all and amongst them nearly half actually get money back. These two groups are growing each year. It will not be long now that they will be the majority of the electorate and they will even demand that you, Mika, ante up.

Meanwhile, we have nearly the same percentage of debt to GDP as Portugal that is in the process of getting a Euro Union bailout.

The result of this runaway spending is inflation in every thing that you buy. It has already started with gold, silver, oil and grain commodities combined with a weakening dollar.

Want your 401k, SEP, IRA to actually buy something when you retire? Stop the above. If you don't your money will be worthless by the time you really need it to live on when you retire.

Keep it up, libutards. The 'torches and pitchforks' that Obama spoke of? They're coming for you in 2012. Sooner, if your so-called President makes things any worse.

"We need to balance things

Submitted by TerryWest on Tue, 04/12/2011 - 2:23am.

"We need to balance things out," she said, echoing a tired liberal argument, or the country will have "class warfare on its worst level."

So you hope Mika, class warfare blaming the wealthy is another villain tactic advocating tension and unrest, and another attempt to distract from this admin's failures and waste.
The nations struggling and poor who have only seen their ranks increase ( balancing alright) wont see any trickle down effect from this admin's taxing of the wealthy, nor will taking from the wealthy help the nations debt crisis.
It will give them more money to spend on self serving non fuctional unrealistic projects, their bloated dysfuctional administration and keep their friends happy however, and the lack of funding for that is what really has Mika and the Obama admin stressed out.

After over two years and counting of intentional ignorance as to the struggling growing masses re riseing food cost, fuel and lack of work, America is suppose to buy into this sudden concern for balance and social apathy?
Why should wealthy white men fund dysfuction? They didnt get wealthy that way and nor will America see stability and balance

Let's start with taxing you and Chris Matthews and Charles Blow and the rest of your fellow travelers at 99 percent. Let's call it "The Galactically Stupid Tax".

You deserve to be taxed at that rate for not understanding simple math. Once again, If you took every dime made by every millionaire in the country you could run the government for about five months!

What happens when the list of the richest people in the country include the barista at your local Starbucks as well as your paperboy?

Submitted by shannon76 on Tue, 04/12/2011 - 9:35am.

I didn't hear what the "Republican" on the panel had to say. I'm sure he heard Mika's mind vomit of socialist talking points and called her out on it, right?? Any halfway intelligent conservative or libertarian would have had a field day with her (and IMMEDIATELY -- not waiting until the next segment, assuming he spoke up at some point).

There's no way anyone could listen to what Zhezhinksky just said and not strenuously object. The big loser in the above clip, to me, isn't Zzzezhinksi (I know she's a moron). It's Scar-bro, the one time congressman, and future leader of the 'Hey, Let's all get along'/Coffee/No Labels Party.

Maybe this 'rich white woman' should surrender all her money, her house, her posessions, et. al., to her beloved King Obama and put her money where her stupid, fat mouth is. Instead of going around telling everybody ELSE what to do. She has no courage.
