Liberal Columnist Mike Barnicle: Obama 'Deified' in '08, Media 'Largely to Blame'

By Matt Hadro | December 10, 2010 | 17:54

A  A

Liberal columnist Mike Barnicle confessed Friday that the media "deified" Barack Obama during his 2008 Presidential campaign. Both Barnicle and former MSNBC host Donny Deutsch, on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," admitted that Obama had no executive experience when he took office as president and that hurt him in his first two years in the Oval Office.

"This guy took office, he had never really run anything in his life, and it's very easy to be an ideologue," Deutsch said of Obama. "And he learned," he added. Barnicle noted that Obama "has never been executive, he's never run anything, he's never managed anything."

"Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough questioned why Obama took so long to focus on a job-centered agenda rather than liberal policies such as health care and cap-and-trade. Barnicle confessed that Obama "was glorified and deified during his campaign, largely by the media. We have to admit that, I mean, we have to plead guilty to that."

At the end of the segment, the panel unanimously agreed that Obama has learned from his mistakes and is now "acting like a president."

"As his presidency progressed he looked around, he looked at his allies – Harry Reid in the Senate, Nancy Pelosi in the House, terrific people – and said 'If these are my allies, I mean they are screwing up left and right. I've got to do something here, I've got to get this train back on the tracks'," Barnicle explained of Obama. "And he's trying to do that now."

A transcript of the segment, which aired on December 10 at 6:49 a.m. EDT, is as follows:

DONNY DEUTSCH: You know what? He's learned. This guy took office, he had never really run anything in his life, and it's very easy to be an ideologue and go "It would be great if the world is like this, and power to the people." And he learned. And he's in charge. And he's making the right move.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: But Mike Barnicle, how long did it take him to learn, Mike Barnicle – it's not like you didn't say, starting in March of 2009, this guy is off track, he better start talking about jobs. And when Bob McDonnell won in 2009, we kept saying jobs, jobs, jobs, "Bob's for jobs." And when Scott Brown won in January of 2010, we said it's about jobs, jobs, jobs – stop being distracted. I guess I'm stunned that he was so tone-deaf to this, and kept saying "Oh, we can do more than one thing at a time, we can fight over a very bad health care reform bill for a year and a half, and then just magically one day lose so many seats and go "Okay, I'm Jack Kemp now. Let's cut taxes on everything."

MIKE BARNICLE: You know, Joe, I mean he was glorified and deified during his campaign, largely by the media. We have to admit that, I mean we have to plead guilty to that. We're going to have Ed Rendell on here in a couple of minutes. Barack Obama has never been an executive, he's never run anything, he's never managed anything – I think what happened is, as his presidency progressed he looked around, he looked at his allies – Harry Reid in the Senate, Nancy Pelosi in the House, terrific people, and said "if these are my allies, I mean they are screwing up left and right. I've got to do something here, I've got to get this train back on the tracks. And he's trying to do that now.

SCARBOROUGH: And I've got to say, if you listen to what you guys are saying, it sounds like the winds of change are blowing across the "Morning Joe" set. And Donny said it, I think Mike has said it, and Pat has said it – have you guys all agreed that Barack Obama – in your opinion, not mine, but in your opinion – that Barack Obama has learned from his mistakes and he is starting to act like a President?

BARNICLE: Yeah.

PAT BUCHANAN: Yep, I think so.

SCARBOROUGH: Wow. That's good news for the White House, I think.

"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after." ~ Dr. William Pierce

These Liberal turkeys are projecting AGAIN

Submitted by needle on Fri, 12/10/2010 - 8:40pm.

They admit their mistake promoting Obama in the past, but failing to acknowledge what a huge calamitous and tragic mistake it was, they, assuming that they will be more competent now based upon nothing, claim that Obama will be more competent now based upon nothing.

What we have gotten out of this is an admission that they have screwed up big time in the past and essentially a guarantee that they will continue to screw up in the future.

Confessions and --- hope?

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 12/10/2010 - 7:13pm.

While it's refreshing to hear liberals like Barnicle finally concede that the inexperienced Obama came into office on the ridiculously high expectations of the voters, they're still out-to-lunch if they think that Obama is finally acting Presidential.

If he were acting like a President, how in the world could he make a deal with the Republicans and get totally rejected by the House Democratic Caucus?

Our President is adrift.  The first part of his agenda has been rejected by the American voters, and he has no more steam to push the remainder of it.  WH insiders privately concede to even the NBC correspondnents that they don't have a plan.

He's lost control of the House, and in 2012, even if he gets re-elected, he's likely to lose the Senate as well.

Two years into his reign, he's turtling-up and trying to salvage whatever legacy he can.

And we the American people -- easily swayed by the uber-hype promoted by the sychophant MSM -- share the blame.

But the great thing about democracy is that you get to correct your mistakes at the next election.

Wow... All That Growth

Submitted by JamPony on Fri, 12/10/2010 - 11:58pm.

All that genius and it ended in shambles so I ask you what is growth for just growth sake?

The Bush fiscal policy was based on cheap money and low regulations.  What do you think will happen when people are diving into real estate to take advantage of 1% loans and no regulation of the banking industry?

Let's look at the phenomenal growth under the Bush Administration:

First we have private construction contracts for Afghanistan and Iraq.

Secondly, we have cheap money chasing real estate.

Thirdly we have relaxed regulations enabling companies like Enron, WorldCom and so on.

So yes, there was plenty of growth and trust me I was a part of it.  The problem was all of us in the industry knew it couldn't last.

Bush was about B.S. and fast easy money which is why his Presidency ended with the biggest financial melt down of al time.  Congrats.

JamPuny.....

Submitted by adamsmith on Sat, 12/11/2010 - 8:44am.

So it was Bush's policies that brought the economy down, huh? Not like twenty years of forcing banks to make loans (Community Reinvestment Act, started by Carter and really pushed hard by Clinton) they knew would never get repaid, rolled into derivatives to hide the catastrophe  had ANYTHING to do with it. Bush tried three times to get Congress to look into Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, with Bawney Fwank saying "All's Well".  Progressive Socialism is an obvious failure and has devolved into Socialists using the Treasury for the sole purpose of giving out money to be reelected. Why is it JamPuny that everytime a Democrat/Socialist comes in to power the economy crumbles all around them? Maybe Keynesian economics is a total pantload and maybe the Democrat Socialist Party is the ultimate expression of Party over Country. You're deluded friend, and coming here to do the troll thing, somebody should have told you don't bring a knife to a gunfight. You're ideologically crippled right at the start. Shallow Thinker?

Submitted by JamPony on Sun, 12/12/2010 - 1:07am.

So to you, deep thinker, the cause of the financial crisis that crippled the entire world is them damn poor people.  Serious analyst of the financial crisis look towards Wall Street and you blame it on the poor people.  Does the Republican party have any other dance?

And poor Bush, he couldn't do anything to stop it even though he had carte blanche in terms of policy.

And I love your excuse: "[Because] Barney Frank said..." How pathetic is that?

And in case you haven't noticed the economy tanked well before Obama took office.  Why are you trying to re-write history so early in the game?

Do you even know the function of Freddie and Fannie?  And I am sure you're aware that Freddie and Fannie are private entities and with the basic Republican premise you're asking the government to both step in and regulate the private sector and simultaneously 'get out of its way.' Of course you will never see the confusion in your arguments because you never critically considered them.  You only heard your position and repeat it here for me today.

Tell me, with all the states suing the government over health care and mandatory this and that.  Why aren't their any lawsuits on the book based on your assertion that the government forced banks to destroy themselves by lending to all those poor people?  Take your time...I'll wait.

Ah, but it's really about US

Submitted by amyshulk on Sun, 12/12/2010 - 7:04am.

Ah, but it's really about US as a nation, not just D's vs. R's.

We wanted stuff {houses/cars/etc.} but weren't willing to do what our parents & theirs did - save up for it.

So the question should be - did we as a nation change & our gov't legislated to reflect that change, OR, did our Rep's greed & willingness to sell their vote create the "gimme" culture?

Same goes for our "back story society" that will forgive heinous acts if the perp was treated heiniously.

Was that US, or Rep's that wished to normalize their/their favored constituents bad behaviors?

Either way you slice it, we are ALL to blame - the past is instructive but not always determinitive.

So let us all agree this is untenable, quit the finger pointing, and let the adults run things!!!

THAT was the benchmark for who you libs in the press chose to worship as your 'god'.  Pants.  And whether or not they're creased.   Hey libs - democrats - I've got pants too.  And they're creased!  Boy, you wouldn't believe how crispily-crisp is the crease in my pants.  So would you like to worship ME as your new 'god'?  Am I now qualified in your brains to lead the country?  Because I have a crisp, crisp, CREASE in my pants?

Each and every one of you libs ought to be horse-whipped and forever banned from speaking, writing, or appearing on TV because of how you misled the nation, and got us stuck with Obama the man-child, who couldn't 'lead' his way through wet toilet paper.  But thank GOODNESS he's got a crisp, crisp, crisp CREASE in his pants!
