CNN Wonders What Censure Will Do to Charlie Rangel's Health

By Matt Hadro | November 19, 2010 | 20:02

A  A

During coverage of Charlie Rangel's verdict delivered by the House Ethics Committee, CNN's John Roberts called the situation "tough times," for the congressman – and wondered what the trauma will to Rangel's health given that he is 80 years old.

Referring to the censure of Sen. McCarthy in the 1950s which "broke him," Roberts remarked that "now Charlie Rangel's 80 years old, what will censuring potentially do to him?"

CNN anchor Candy Crowley also mentioned Rangel's age, saying that the hearings were "tough to watch." She added that "the next step" of the House voting on having the censure or not "is really even more painful."

"This is a rough one, but certainly one that has had, if you will, bipartisan support on something that's difficult, clearly, for the congressman to deal with," Crowley said, putting the situation in perspective.

A transcript of the segment, which aired on November 19 at 8:07 a.m. EDT, is as follows:

JOHN ROBERTS: Good to see you, Candy. So the panel voted nine-to-one to censure Charlie Rangel. If he is censured, it's going to be the first time it's happened since the early 1980s. I mean this is – these are really some tough times for him.

CANDY CROWLEY: They really are. It-It's tough to watch, I'll tell you. It was – he was at times defiant going into this saying, you know, the process is flawed. In the end, he talked about the things that he had done, both in his military service, which was heroic, as well as for his constituents. He is 80 years old, I mean this is tough to watch. Nonetheless, it was pretty overwhelming from his Democratic and his Republican colleagues who found these ethics violations. And now the next step is really even more painful, because the House of Representatives itself will vote on whether to have this censure. He stands on the House floor. People could or might come out and talk about what he's done. Certainly he will have to listen to the Speaker talk about what the Ethics Committee has found. So this is – this is a rough one, but certainly one that has had, if you will, bipartisan support on something that's difficult, clearly, for the congressman to deal with.

KIRAN CHETRY: Yeah, and I – it doesn't bode well in general for the Congress, to have to have all that, and it would be Speaker Pelosi doing that? Because it's not the new congress yet?

CROWLEY: Yes...it would be Speaker Pelosi. And it's – you know, it's a very sort of solemn side. As you say, I think they've done – the Ethics Committee has been around for about 40-plus years, I think they've done it four times. This is a big deal. I mean the next step would have been expulsion, so censure is huge.

ROBERTS: You know Candy, David Gergen was on with me last night on 360 talking about this. And he pointed to Joe McCarthy's censure, and said that really, really broke him. Now Charlie Rangel's 80 years old, what will censuring potentially do to him?

CROWLEY: Well he was just re-elected by his constituents obviously, and, but I think it's – you know, when, when you are looking back at a career, the kind of career that Charlie Rangel has had, both in the House and in the military, this is in – this is in the history books now, and that's something that as you know, always shows up in that first graph of history. It's not – clearly from his remarks he made yesterday – this was not something – he does know that this is something that does put a taint on his record.

Rangel has played this weak, poor old man stunt to the hilt, and it's absurd that these TV clowns are worried about his "censure."  He ought be getting free health care in a Federal prison today.

But nobody wanted to trip the Race Card, especially the Holder Justice Department.

With no Federal trial, Rangel should then have been expelled, but the House wasfearful again.  If the House goes for anything less than censure after two years of dancing around this inevitability. they'll hand the  GOP yet one more issue to beat the Dems over the head with.

Candy, did you think he was frail before this???

Apparently he didn't; he thought he was bulletproof.

Hey, Candy...people aren't on their last legs at 80, any more, you know!

As evidenced by his August birthday party (This ain't no funeral!!  -Rangel)

Then he gave an impromptu speech in Congress

Oh, and Rangel said he  wouldn't even accept a reprimand!

"If I can't get my dignity back here, then fire your best shot at getting rid of me through expulsion."

Frankly, I think they ought to call his bluff and kick his butt out.

The difference between Censure and . . .

Submitted by neutron on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 9:28pm.

The difference between Censure and un-Censured: Rangel's not a "Ranking Member."

The difference between Censure and vacation: given vacation, you don't have to go into the office.

The difference between Censure and a perjury: 1 count of perjury will get you jail time; unlimited ethics guilty counts and Censure will cost you nothing.

The difference between Censure then and now: in 1776 through 1950, integrity and personal reputation meant something. For present-day Democrats, getting Censured, caught with prostitutes, dis-barred, swindling investors, sweetheart deals on motgages, et cetera, only increase your stature in The Party.

I'd like a super giant Slurpee, a bag of Cheetos, a case of Bourbon, and a couple of scratch-off Censures to go!

You've heard of Stockholm Syndrome?

Submitted by KC Mulville on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 8:12pm.

What do you call it when a reporter develops relationships with sources? Rangel was a frequent guest of the media, a frequent Sunday morning visitor, and no doubt a constant background source for every reporter in town who wanted to get some inside dirt. In other words, the media loved this guy because he gave them what they wanted.

Consider:

  • A powerful man is accused of substantial corruption.
  • His own colleagues agree with the charges.

... and the media is concerned with how it will hurt  ... the corrupt politician?

How will Al Capone feel about his conviction? How will O.J. feel about his conviction? How will Bruno Hauptmann feel about his conviction?

Look what the media has done. Because Rangel is a favorite of the media, and a key player in the game that the media wants to play, they see this whole trial from his perspective. Lost is the view of the public he defrauded in his public service.

Charlie Rangel is exhibit A

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 8:22pm.

Charlie Rangel is exhibit A in why we need mandatory retirement at 65 for congressmen if we can't get term limits.  There is NO reason why anyone should in congress this long.  It breeds a sense of entitlement and arrogance.

Our congressmen often talk of the "privilege" of "service."    But they really think of it as an entitlement.  If it's such a privilege, then don't be selfish; get the hell out  and let someone else have the "privilege."

Censure isn't "huge"...it's a crock.  Words, just words.  Thre's no actual punishment or consequences.  Will he even lose his seat on Ways and Means?

As for concerns about his health, there's a simple solution: he could retire.

Great videos.

I think Denny Crane was creator David E. Kelley's twisted vision of an uber-Right Wing disintegrating fanatic meant to mock and ridicule the Right.  It backfired.  Most people seemed to have loved the character.  With that dynamic, Kelley was compelled to write better scripts for Crane that secured his popularity even more.

Then again, Kelley probably wanted to make big bucks so he could pay more in taxes like a "real" patriot.  Yep, I'm sure he pays more than required every year.

I get the gun video emailed often.  Always good for a viewing.

I agree that the situation was/is a mockery; a farce, even.

It is bothersome to know that a politician at federal level can get away with being censured, for actions that would put you or I in jail had we committed them.

If it helps, I had imagined Pelosi doing the "bad" thing with the same expression she had on her face when Joe Wilson did his "You lie!" bit plus a little pointing and then when asked by the media about his punishment, she would use the same response she said before about the Constitution: Are you serious?

It kinda brought a bit of macabre humour on this whole nonsense.

His military career and awards do absolutely nothing to negate the seriousness of what he's done.  In fact they make it even worse because you would expect someone with that kind of dedication and valor in the service of his country to have a higher standard of behavior than Rangel has shown with his dealings.  If he's so old that he can't stand up under censure, then he should resign from his post and spare everyone the spectacle that this is sure to become.  His illegal doings will become the centerpiece of any legacy he thinks he might leave behind.

I'm sure Chaley threw a few bucks his way !! After Charlie this guy should be looked into on how he arrived at the suggestion of a mere Censure when you compare Charlie's charges against Mr. Trafficat's from just a decade ago Charlie by far were more serious and of course had DOJ Holder had any balls should have been in Prison for his Crimes, and since Holder didn't persue Charlie then we should of looked to the IRS to do there JOBS where by again Charlie should be in Prison awaiting his hearing by the Enthnics committee on top of charges form Holder & IRS and stripped him of every penny he has and every item he accumulated along the way e.g the Houses, cars (Parked for free) villas, gold watches, rings and the Millions he's got stashed away over there in on the Island of NaboomBoom !!

The one thing we have going for us is this, those who reside on this Committee had better head the voices of the American People as should those in the House cause come 2012 this will be remembered and if most if not all of them are up for re-election they had better do the right thing and strip him of every bit of power, and kick his ugly fat Ass out on his head cause it will come back to bite them all in the ass if they allow him to walk away with a slap on the wrist !!!

"Tough" to watch? He brought it upon himself!

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 3:46pm.

"It-It's tough to watch, I'll tell you."

Yes, I it would be rather "tough" to "watch" one of your idols being exposed as a mere mortal, one who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar, as they say.

I, for one, have little sympathy for Rangel.  He brought this upon himself, so he has no one but himself to blame. His "age" is immaterial.  If you're so worried about what this will do to him at his age, supposedly because the "stress" may cause him harm, then why didn't you show concern for him being in the House at his "age" when he was running for re-election.  Being the "head" of a committee, as well as being a member of the House in general, is always a stressful situation.  How will this "censure" make that stress any worse?

Stop making excuses, stop looking to evoke our sympathy, for a man who knowing, willfully, and DEFIANTLY brought this all upon himself.  Rangel isn't a victim here, he the perpetrator.  His constituents, and the American public in general, are the victims here. It's time we treat him, and all other who do this, as the true perpetrators they relly are.
