You've probably seen the video. In Chile, a man boards a bus and twice tries to rip a purse away from a woman. When he fails, he tries to flee, only to get his arm stuck in the door. Whereupon the driver subdues him with a few swings from his handy bat. When the bus finally stops, the police are there to greet the miscreant and lead him away.
When Jimmy Kimmel played the clip on his show, the audience reacted with cheers. But when Morning Joe aired it today, Mika declared herself "disturbed." When Mika asked why the clip was enjoyable, Joe Scarborough explained the obvious: "because justice won out."
Mika's reaction epitomized the liberal instinct to sympathize with the criminal. Should the snatcher have been left free to wield a knife or other weapon he might have been carrying?
JIMMY KIMMEL: This happened in Chile. A man boarded a bus end tried to snatch a woman's purse but as you'll see here it didn't go well for him. That's the guy. The woman is in the front row. He tried to grab the purse. He made to laugh. He again tries to pull it. As he does the door closes and he [Kimmel laughs] -- and now he's stuck in the door. And he's taking a real beating at the hands of the bus driver. I wonder if our bus drivers carry bats like that? The door opens, he tries to get away. There's the police waiting for him.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: Holy cow. He was glad to go into the arms of the police.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I was disturbed by that.
SCARBOROUGH: Disturbed by what?
BRZEZINSKI: Why was that enjoyable to you all?
SCARBOROUGH: Well, because justice won out.
DONNY DEUTSCH: Street justice.
STEVE RATTNER: Because there was no sound and you couldn't hear him crying.
BRZEZINSKI: Awful. Welcome back to Morning Joe. Donny Deutsch and Steve Rattner are still with us.
SCARBOROURGH: [facetiously] I feel bad. I feel so bad. He's a millennial.
BRZEZINSKI: [facetiously] Well then he deserved it: they're annoying.
