Morning After Historic Walker Victory, Morning Joe Excludes Republicans For First 69 Minutes

By Mark Finkelstein | June 06, 2012 | 08:16

A  A

Scott Walker scored an historic victory last night.  The first governor ever to fend off a recall election.  Winning in the face of a furious Big Labor effort against him.  And so, to comment on this resounding Republican victory, Morning Joe . . . assembled a lefty panel and excluded any Republicans until the second hour, when Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell was finally permitted to put in an appearance.  With Joe Scarborough off for the day, the panel consisted of Mika Brzezinski, former Dem congressman Harold Ford, Jr., former Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, Mike Allen of Politico, and just to balance things off . . . Howard Dean!

Making matters worse, though the show opened with a clip from Walker's victory speech, the panel itself didn't get around to saying word one about the Wisconsin recall until after Meacham had a chance to flack his new book that won't even be available till the Fall, and Mika bemoaned the Senate's rejection of the so-called Paycheck Fairness Act, calling Republicans "idiots."  View the video after the jump.

No transcript needed.  Just watch the on-screen clock, indicating 6:09 AM CT, 69 minutes into the show, when McDonnell finally makes the first Republican appearance.  Those who take guilty pleasure in the travails of their political opponents the morning after a defeat will want to watch Mika's expression as she asks McDonnell to explain what happened in Wisconsin.

Joe was actually off, as Mark noted.

While one can't be certain what he would have done, having Mika in charge, this was pretty much guaranteed.

. . . as is Paul Krugman. But they're ideologues, and thus get things very wrong.

Given that Brzezinski was Carter's National Security Adviser, one need only look at that disasterous record to appreciate how a learned individual is not necessarily the right individual.

Mika doesn't know anymore about that bill . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 06/06/2012 - 9:16am.

. . . then she gleans from its title.

I heard one analyst say that part of the bill is a provision to force employers to pay retroactively any violations of the act after it's passed. In other words, if some board determines that Employee A was underpaid for 15 years, the employer then has to not only pay the difference, but penalties as well.

I am going to do something I never thought I would do: defend Bubbles. I think she does one thing rather well on the show. She keeps the show moving along in a timely manner. That's about it though. Oh yeah-did anyone hear her say this morning that she wants to be an actress? Really, I'm not kidding! She was serious!

Must have had a hard time booking guests!!

Submitted by lol-lol-lol on Wed, 06/06/2012 - 8:47am.

Morning Joe is always wall-to-wall politics!

Today, the morning after the largest political earthquake in years:

- Morgan Freeman
- Regis Philbin
- the treasury secretary under Bill Cliton (more boring than most other former treasury secretaries)
- Some Hollywood producer I never heard of.
- an author of a book about Bush 41

It's just Mika and Willie winging it today. LOL

I guarantee if Walker had lost they would be playing it up under a carnival atmosphere. They would have guests like Howard Deen and Debbie Blabbermouth Shultz telling us about the implications for the fall elections.

lol

I couldn't sleep last night,

Submitted by NCfairandbalanced on Wed, 06/06/2012 - 8:49am.

I couldn't sleep last night, so I started channel surfing. I came up with MSNBC...not mention...no crawler about election results. I knew then Walker had won...just not by how much. If Barrett had won, I would have not had to turn to Fox or even CNN, which both did have the crawler with the results.

Incredible.

No kidding here, MSNBC better have some conservatives on backup for election night. If Obama loses, I'm not sure their "A" team will be able to deal with their devastation while on the air.

I laughed for 68 minutes. What a bunch of LOSERS! Do they not realize that by ignoring it for so long that it actually made it more enjoyable to watch? But they delivered. They all came across as the asses they are. By the way, about Howard Dean...I thought Oswald was shot and killed by Jack Ruby. I didn't realize he survived and went into politics. He also looks like someone who spent the first 10 years of his life with a Manhole cover on his head. All in all, I enjoyed the show immensely.

Can anyone envision what is

Submitted by joedoe on Wed, 06/06/2012 - 9:26am.

Can anyone envision what is probably taking place at MSNBC this morning? Sharpton, Matthews, Schultz, Maddow and O’Donnell are all probably meeting in a large conference room, discussing the proper way to spin this affirmation of Walker’s policies.

Schultz is most likely already threatening to burn the place down. Maddow is probably certain it is some type of conspiracy involving Area 51. O’Donnell is sure it has something to do with GI Benefits. Sharpton still has his face stuck in a blueberry pie. And, the Matthews’ thrill is desperately trying to run out of the room!

When Fox announced for Walker

Submitted by Gat New York on Wed, 06/06/2012 - 9:57am.

When Fox announced for Walker I turned on MSNBC just to see if there would be any historic on-air meltdowns, but did not realize that the entire network was in a meltdown.

The group you describe reminds of the movie "The Dream Team" where a group of misfits from an insane asylum are ona field trip in Manhattan. Sharpton is clearly the Christopher Lloyd character who playacts as a doctor. Matthews is the Peter Boyle character who gets carried away in a baptosts church and strips. Schultz is definately the Stephen Furst character who is just hopelessly dimwitted.

What they need in the MSNBC studios is just more rubber added to the walls.

Mika's brother

Submitted by Lindamae on Wed, 06/06/2012 - 11:56am.

Did you catch Mika on one of the late night talkies? When describing her childhood, she mentioned all of the famous people she has met. When told her childhood must have benefited her and her siblings, she quipped "except for my brother, he's a Republican."

She is her father's daughter. Hates democracy, capitalism and the Constitution. Dad came here for the freedoms America offered. I can't understand why he then wants to destroy that freedom.
