MSNBC Guest Calls Ann Romney 'Insufferable', Her Mother's Day Op-Ed 'Creepy'

By Mark Finkelstein | May 13, 2012 | 10:29

A  A

Snark on, Michelle!  On the MSNBC show "Up With Chris Hayes" this morning, feminist author Michelle Goldberg attacked Ann Romney as "insufferable" and derided a phrase in Ann's op-ed on the subject of motherhood as "creepy."

Goldberg's "insufferable" shot drew approving laughter from the all-feminist panel.  And surely the attacks on the Romneys for their traditional family values will play well with a certain segment of the electorate. The problem for President Obama: that segment is one that is already almost entirely in his camp.  But these sort of mean-spirited attacks are likely to alienate the very voters in the middle that PBO needs to persuade.  Video after the jump.

Watch Goldberg unwittingly play into Republican hands by exemplifying how the most enthusiastic Obama backers are fundamentally unsympathetic to the kind of woman, in the person of Ann Romney, that the great majority of Americans surely find admirable.

Note: not to be out-snarked by Goldberg, Hayes himself said of Ann Romney's op-ed "I don't want to say it reads a bit like a hostage video, but . . . "  Happy Mother's Day to you too, Chris!

MICHELLE GOLDBERG: I wonder: I mean, it can't only be me that maybe inititally saw Ann Romney as maybe a sympathetic or neutral figure but who is increasingly seeing her as someone who is kind of insufferable because of the way she's milking this thing.  And, you know, in a lot of ways the op-ed was totally anodyne, right?  You know, yes, motherhood is beautiful.  I find that phrase, "the crown of motherhood" really kind of creepy.  Not just because of its, like, somewhat, you know, I mean it's kind of usually really authoritarian societies that give out, like, the Cross of Motherhood.

Creepy

Submitted by allouchsit on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 10:46am.

I can recognize creepy when I see it. In this case I know who is the creepy one, and it is NOT Ann Romney.

Democrats are really creepy. They claim to support women -- but only if they are liberals. They say they are all for civil rights -- but only if they are liberal. They scream racial discrimination when blacks are beaten, but remain entirely silent when whites are beaten.

Now THAT is creepy.

Proverbs 31: 10-31 Creepy?
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates

I find this show quite the car wreck

Submitted by Texndoc on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 11:02am.

You have the rather dorky looking ultra-liberal host Chris Hayes who isn't fit to lick a Marine's boots and wouldn't know which part of a gun your finger goes into, and his coffee-rountable of Manhattan ultraliberal idiots who hate any institution which made this country great. Does anyone even have to look up whether those two women there have ever given birth once, let alone five times?
I usually tune in now and then on weekends to laugh - when the Zuccotti Park occupiers were in full force once, the enitre show was just a planning session for them.

Ann Romney's piece is beautiful

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 11:02am.

....as she is. As her mother said, both inside and out.

Methinks these two have been overcome by the Green Eyed Goddess. All you need to do is look at them.

How utterly typical of MSNBC.....to have on two nasty women who despise and denigrate a woman who has done ONLY what today celebrates....being a mother.

You can bet your last dime

Submitted by motherbelt on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 11:32am.

You can bet your last dime that if Michelle Obama wrote a piece on motherhood, they would be singing her praises.

Oh, wait!  She doesn't have to!  Sally Quinn did it for her two years ago!!

Have your barf-bag handy:

Today is Mother's Day. Today we should celebrate Michelle Obama's arms as the arms of a mother.  [   ]

They are toned and muscular, burnished and beautiful.

It was admirable to Quinn, that Michelle wasn't working full-time!!

Nothing could be more empowering than to see a woman with all of the attributes of Michelle Obama, embrace her children the way she does. She loves those girls and she is giving them a role model for the kind of strong woman that she wants them to be. A woman should have the right to choose. In every respect. Having a great education, a job, a career is fulfilling. She has a Harvard Law degree and had a powerful job herself. She will take on projects in the White House that will prove to be transformational ultimately. And she will return one day to her career when her children are older.
For now, though, she has looked at her job as making sure that the trust and the responsibility she has taken on as a parent is where her focus lies. [  ]

When I look at Michelle Obama with her daughters, I see someone who really loves her children. I see a swing set and a dog and a vegetable garden and sleepovers and redecorating the White House so that the furniture is "fort worthy."

So I guess it depends on which mother is being crowned.

Oh, and keep in mind that this paean to Michelle appeared on the WaPo's "On Faith" page.

Liberal Saintmotherhood, anyone?

Thanks for the warning....

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 11:47am.

That is truly gag-worthy.

Where's the mention of Michelle's live-in nanny? Her own mother. She goes flying around and leaves her young daughters in the care of her mother and the Secret Service. You can see it in the poor little Wee Wons faces when they are dragged out in public, they are hating life. I truly feel sorry for those two daughters of Michelle & Barry.

"It was admirable to Quinn, that Michelle wasn't working full-time!!" She wasn't working full time even when she was being paid for a full time job. Her $300,000 dollar a year job was a payoff to her Commie husband for securing a multi-million dollar grant from our wallets. She rarely even reported to work!

Submitted by krendler on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 11:26am.

I'd say they absolutely are IF the campaign decides to put them out there and have them stump, make speeches, etc for the candidate.

See Michelle Obama touring the country in 08, making one "bad America" speech and interview after another, and twice in one day in two separate cities, delivering the despicable line "For the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of my country" (slightly modifying it the second time to "really proud"). Staggering that this miserable B$(*$# is allowed to set foot in the white house, let alone live there.

So sure, by all means, lets compare Ann Romney's statements to those of Obama stumper Michelle.

Anodyne? You can tell the dimwitted, jealous nobody checked an online dictionary for hours before uttering that line.

Braindead liberals like her are rarely capable of using any complex words unless they received them by text message an hour before taping.

The meshuggah yenta probably had to have somebody read the word to her over and over again to get the correct pronunciation.

Michelle Goldberg, what on earth did your mother do to you to make you hate motherhood? Obviously something bad must have happened during your childhood for you to be so bitter that you attack a mother that you don't even know.

Why do liberals hate mothers? Especially mothers who stay home to raise their children???????????

And my guess is, in the past, they've all fawned over Michelle Obama's arms and incredible "beauty."

I wonder what these imbeciles would be doing if they weren't involved in some liberal circle jerk gab-fest on a third rate network bashing a decent woman . Seriously, what exactly would their marketable skills be? I wonder what their degrees are in.

Newsbusters Made Me Read Ann Romney's OP Ed

Submitted by merr4402 on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 4:47pm.

After seeing this feminist make such a fuss, I wanted to see what it was all about and what was so creepy. So I clicked "Op-Ed" and read Ann's article on Motherhood.

Everything was normal, nothing creepy about it. She described her own terrors of raising a child and how her mother helped and now she passes on that help to her many grandchildren. What the heck is creepy about that?

I think this reflects the topsy-turvey world of Michelle Goldberg where motherhood and being a wife is bad and being selfish and focusing on the flesh is good.

Click the "Op-Ed" link in this article and you will see what I mean.
