Bill Keller: 'Santorum Sounds Like He's Creeping Up On Christian Version Of Sharia Law'

By Mark Finkelstein | February 28, 2012 | 10:41

A  A

Willful ignorance combined with anti-Christian bigotry: not a pretty sight. Bill Keller, former New York Times executive editor turned Times columnist, put both on display on today's Morning Joe.

Joe Scarborough played a clip of Santorum criticizing President Obama and Hillary Clinton for at times speaking of "freedom of worship" rather than "freedom of religion." Santorum made his point crystal clear: merely having the freedom to pray is not enough.  People must have the right to practice their religion outside the confines of the sanctuary. But Scarborough and Keller claimed not to understand what Santorum was saying.  Keller then added his ugly coda: "sometimes Santorum sounds like he's creeping up on a Christian version of Sharia law." Video after the jump.

Watch Keller expose the mind of the New York Times at work.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: I don't even get what Santorum is saying here.  Listen to this.

Cut to Santorum clip.

RICK SANTORUM: Listen to what the President says and what the First Lady, not the First Lady, but the Secretary of State says, when they talk about the freedom of religion.  They don't use that term all the time. They use a different term: freedom of worship. We're in a hall here for St. Mary's. You go to the hall over there, you go to the sanctuary and talk all you want: you can have your religious faith. But if you come here, and you try to practice your faith: uh-unh. Then the government's going to tell you what to do. Is that how you interpret the First Amendment? Freedom of worship is not just what you do in the sanctuary. It's how you practice your faith outside the sanctuary, and at least in the America I grew up in, and that used to be around, that was freedom of religion.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: What is he talking about?

SCARBOROUGH: I have no idea.

BILL KELLER: Remember earlier in the campaign when Newt Gingrich was worrying everyone about Sharia law: the Muslims were going to impose Sharia law in America? Sometimes Santorum sounds like he's creeping up on a Christian version of Sharia law.

... let me interpret for you dumb c**ts.

He's saying that you should be able to live your life according to the principles you believe in. He never says that you should impose your beliefs on others, and kill them if they refuse to do as you say!

Last time I checked, Christians ain't going around killing anyone and everyone they consider to be infidels, or non-believers.

If liberals keep this Shiite up, it may reach that point out of necessity for survival.

Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition.

I really wish liberal America would realize how testy things are beginning to get and back off before it is too late.

Liberals have no problem at all with Christianity when they are using it to promote their own "social gospel" view that Jesus thought the government should collect taxes to take care of the poor.
It's when they get into the area of sexual behavior that they think government has no business.

I'm just wondering, did Der Fuehrer The President really draw a sketch of the first Volkswagen Chevy VOLT on a cocktail napkin?

Is it true Der Fuehrer The President's first act of compassion as a political figure was authorizing the snuffing out of Baby Knauer euthanism of children who survive abortion?

Is it true Der Fuehrer The President hoodwinked the Catholic Church into surrendering the development of Germany's youth U.S. Catholic Church healthcare plans to the state?

Keller obviously thinks that Christianity must be bad in some way, so much so that he thinks it'll be like Sharia Law.

If that's the case, why the hell aren't these assholes complaining about the judges who follow(unConstitutionally I should add) Sharia law in this country for the Muslims like the beating in Penn or the other locations in the US?

What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Otherwise, these assholes and I use that term nicely again really need to shut the hell up about Santorum.

Why does the liberal elitist

Submitted by John21 on Tue, 02/28/2012 - 11:55am.

Why does the liberal elitist assume they are intelligent, when a fairly simple statement is beyond their understanding?

The man is saying you should live your life according to your principals. (Definition: live by your moral beliefs) I can understand why this confuses the liberals of America, they have no set principals only the current talking points and agenda and they change that at least once a week
The talking points change to justify the current scam or cover story for their lies.

The lack of understanding is because at school of higher education they were indoctrinated not educated. Lack of logic or any real compulsion for belief systems is a foreign idea and not comprehended by the limited capabilities of the liberal mind.

A couple of observations...

Submitted by Meredith1966 on Tue, 02/28/2012 - 1:16pm.

Observation the First - There is no such thing as a Christian version of Sharia Law. Given that, Keller's statement is ludicrous and should have been identified as so by Scabby or Mika.

Observation the Second - Santorum's meaning in his statement is clear as day. If the government, aka Dear Leader, keeps saying 'Freedom of Worship' instead of 'Freedom of Religion', they are implying that someone must decide for the people what they are free to worship. The someone, or something, must be The Government. In that case, there is no freedom of religion; the government sets the religion, in clear violation of the Constitution, as whatever they want it to be. The Constitution is clear in that it establishes Freedom of Religion and a corresponding Freedom of Worship, and they are not mutually exclusive. Without freedom of religion, there is no freedom of worship. Only the Utopian would think there is. By combining the meaning of both into the single phrase, Freedom of Worship, they are attempting to minimize or eliminate true Freedom of Religion and instead substitute for it Freedom of State-Approved Religions. We can't establish a single one, but perhaps we can regulate which ones are PC enough to be practiced. To me, this is a continuation of Obama's subtle attempt to put religion in the US under the purview of government through such things as healthcare mandates that violate Church morals and teachings.

Observation the Third - If I can recognize this, me being a dirty inhabitant of Flyover Territory, why can't Keller, Scabby, and Mika?? Aren't they part of the Coastal Intellectual class?

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." - Thomas Jefferson

A Reasonable Response

Submitted by Devout Catholic on Tue, 02/28/2012 - 9:01pm.

Hello all, new to the forum.

I want to relate a conversation that occured just the other evening. It has had an overwhelming effect on the way that I, my family, and others present at the time see this issue.

Last Saturday evening, we were having dinner with family, friends and neighbors. All Catholics and all conservatives.

My granddaughter Angela came in, and making her way to her room, one of our guest called out to her, "we didn't see you at mass today"

What she responded with, was at the very least very devastating and very timely as well, as we had just been discussing "Obama's attack on the Church "

For perspective, keep in mind that she just returned from doing a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

This was her response.

"Yes, you did not see me at mass. And No, you probably won't see me at mass again." That single statement was enough to take the air out of myself, my wife, and several others of those present, as Angela has always been very devout and faithful to the church.

Then she went on, "you know, the same day that we arrived in Afghanistan, an intelligence officer met with out unit, to give us some historical perspective and present day situational awareness, the basic rundown of what and why we were fighting. A pep talk so to speak."

"He said that the Taliban, an extemist religious wing of Islam, with it's militaristic wing Al Quida, had seized complete and total control of Afghanistan." "He went on to explain the methods, providing examples of how these religious fanatics, had subjegated and tyranically controlled all of the people, but that their religious rule had been especially harsh and punitive to the women and children of Afghanistan." "For years, their tyranical control of the people, had been absolute" "Controlling every aspect of their daily lives"

She went on, "while we were there, we heard many stories of atrocities and crimes against men, women and children alike, with examples of what had happened in very fine detail."

"What it all boiled down to, was a few religious leaders, fanatics, demanded absolute and unquestioned obedience and submission from everyone" "and any sign of disobedience to their will, was described as an attack on Islam, and dealt with, without mercy or pity, against anyone that even showed signs of discent or disagreement"

Then she made a point, that I was not even aware of, she said "And before any of you start with "well that is Islam, they have their god and we have ours," I can tell you what I learned" "Islam worships Alah, but Alah is the God of Abraham" "Yeah, the same Abraham that is father of the Jews, who is also the same god that Christians worship"

Then her last statement before she walked out of the room "So while the Catholic church, and the Baptist, and the methodist, and so on, have not started killing people for opposing the churches' doctriine, some of these so called moral leaders, are still demanding complete and utter obedience. "They are still demanding absolute and complete control and submission from their followers" "So I ask you, what is the difference between what I was fighting in Afghanistan, and what is happening here ? " "Not much difference from my perspective"

She walked out of the room, and all of us were stunned. The conversation has changes since Saturday evening in our home.

One last note, a few minutes later, a friend of mine of over 30 years and his wife were in the kitchen, I walked in to hear him say "I told you that if she went into the army she would come out a dyke or a lesbian" Then his wife spotted me, and total silence again. A 30 year friendship wiped out in a second, for someone's smartmouthed attitude. I politely asked him and his wife to get out of my home, and never bother to come back. Oh, and this man, claims to support the troops, I guess that only applies as long as they serve without ever expressing an opinion.

So a word of warning, this issue is destroying our friendships, our families, and if we are not carefull, our republican party.

Submitted by Radical1979 on Tue, 02/28/2012 - 9:26pm.

I'm not sure what the point of your story was, but I do have a few comments.

First of all, complete obedience as a Catholic is to God, and punishments are meted out by God, not by men. That is a huge difference between islam and Christianity/Judaism. Yes, we are taught to be completely and utterly obedient to God.

The nonsense about a few extremists forcing the population is just that, nonsense. If you look at any country in which muslims are in charge, all of those atrocities take place. If you don't believe me you can read some books written well before 9/11. Try "Princess" written by a wealthy Saudi woman, or for a really grim view read "Not Without My Daughter". Ali Hsiri is a more recent author who outlines what is happening in Denmark as the influx of the members of the "Religion of Peace" immigrate in.

Your granddaughter is sadly mistaken if she believes other religions are anything like islam.
