Chris Hayes's Curious Advice To Conservatives: Call Bush's Iraq War 'Criminal'
This could go down as some of the worst political advice ever. Then again, consider the source. Chris Hayes isn't exactly in the business of helping conservatives lead . . . or win elections.
On his MSNBC show this morning, Hayes advised conservatives to call the war that President Bush led against Iraq "criminal." Yeah, that's the ticket. Video after the jump.
Hayes offered up his keen political insight in the course of inveighing against attacking Iran in order to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon. According to Hayes, it's not that Iraq was the wrong pre-emptive war. It's that pre-emptive war is, apparently, among other things, always "criminal."
Query whether Hayes would call Bill and Hillary Clinton, and a long list of leading liberals, criminal co-conspirators for their support of the Iraq invasion? Does Hayes believe it would it have been criminal had the Allies pre-emptively attacked Hitler's Germany prior to its invasion of Poland?
CHRIS HAYES: Sometimes I think this can't possibly be happening. After the horror of the last decade, are we really going to countenance a pre-emptive strike against a Middle Eastern country that is supposedly attempting to acquire weapons of mass destruction? The lesson of Iraq was not, as the conservative establishment seems to think, that we waged the wrong pre-emptive war. But rather, that pre-emptive war is wrong. It's not: whoops, it would have been better if we had better intelligence. It's that attacking a country unprovoked is criminal. It violates basic international norms and moral codes. It is reckless and dangerous. It creates the conditions for bloodshed among innocents and expensive and costly blow-back. And if conservatives really want to convincingly distance themselves from George W. Bush, they could start by acknowledging that.

These are the SAME GENIUSES who ALSO said - with a straight face - that DROPPING BOMBS ON LIBYA IS NOT A HOSTILE ACT so they didn't need a declaration for THAT war.

Argh-Typical liberal, no knowledge at all of history. Those of us who worked that theater in the 1990's will recall the near weekly engagements of our aircraft monitoring the UN mandated no-fly zone, Saddam putting a price on the head of any aircrew that his SAM crews were able to kill or capture.
But to a liberal that is not provocation since we are supposed to be clay pigeons.

Congress authorized the invasion of Iraq in October of 2002. It listed 22 reasons for sending in troops. Not one of those reasons were pre-emptive. Instead it gave a long list of grievances going back decades.

Criminal War... In Libya

OK, Chris, we'll do that, just as soon as you start calling Obama's war in Libya a "criminal preemptive war", too, as just when did Libya ever threaten us?

He has taken military actions on or in countries where we have no declaration of war.
He has sent troops into Pakistan and consistently bombs that country with drones.
He has sent troops into Somalia.
He has bombed Yemen.
Oh and he has military advisors (wink wink nudge nudge) in Nigeria and Uganda.

The mistake came when we shifted from crushing our enemies to trying to build a bunch of barbarians a nation. But the decision to invade and the conduct of that invasion was a magnificent moment for not only the United States but the world, for it signaled the willingness of America and civilization to meet aggression and fight back. It will pay dividends for decades, and we owe much to those who decided to demonstrate resolve by our government and on the field of battle.
What a contrast between Bush, for all his faults, and the groveling apologetics of Obama.

I'm certain that The Nation's Katrina vanden Heuvel and the President of MSNBC, Phil Griffin, would agree about Hayes' political acumen. For most Americans, his leftist drivel is worthless regardless of what type of glasses he wears. Hayes proudly ranks as one of the most wimpish timid cowards of the American progressive movement. If he leans forward, smack him back to the rear-end where he belongs.

The Iraq War-Definitely not Criminal
Submitted by ahusser on Sun, 02/26/2012 - 5:55pm.
For all those good reasons stated above and I would add the war was probably morally and strategically sound. Liberals grasp of reality (where facts never enter into their conversation) is always suspect and extremely frustrating to deal with their fantasies (trying to reason with irrational people makes your head explode). But the war was (and not in hindsight either) political suicide for President Bush and the fallout led to the Dem majority in Congress and the strange bedfellow who occupies the WH. Bush and his advisers vastly underestimated their enemies (dem/libs not terrorists) determination to destroy him and his Presidency. The War galvanized what I thought was dead liberalism but they had just gone underground and patiently awaited their opportunity to knife him in the back and the war was the catalyst which raised their party from the dead. This all could have been prevented if his father had finished the job in the first place and not worry over the niceties of world opinion and some specious alliances. It also didn't seem that we had a good plan for what happened after we easily won the military battle. The cost in human lives and treasure has been great in both theaters and now we see all that capital expended in Afghanistan did nothing and affected nothing (Iraq soon?).
