Mika On Santorum: 'I Don't Agree With Anything He Says, But I Like The Guy'
There was a surprisingly positive consensus on Rick Santorum on today's Morning Joe. Most remarkable was the observation by Obama fan Mika Brzezinski, who said "I don't agree with anything he says, but I like the guy." H/t to NewsBusters reader D.B. for audio assistance.
Joe Scarborough and Willie Geist were also upbeat on Santorum, Scarborough astutely observing that "90% of Americans don't obsess on social issues," so that what some would cast as controversial past statements by Santorum won't hurt him nearly as much as might be imagined. Video after the jump.
Check out the panel's surprisingly positive take on Santorum.
Note: Mika's protestations notwithstanding, there is at least one significant subject on which she agreed with Santorum. Like Santorum, Brzezinski opposed the Obama administration's first formulation requiring Catholic institutions to provide health insurance services that violated their fundamental beliefs.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: This is where I disagree with the conventional wisdom. The conventional wisdom is a guy like Rick Santorum has said too many crazy things, and he's too this and he's too that. I suprised a conservative activist a month or two ago, saying I thought Rick Santorum would match up better in a general election than any of these other candidates, because he does have the blue-collar background, and because at the end of the day, 90% of Americans don't obsess on social issues. And we've seen with Santorum and we've seen it this week, and when David Gregory read that part of the book, which said basically you've got feminists who've encouraged [sic] women to stay home, nine out of ten candidates would fumble around. Santorum explained it away [see NB item on that exchange.]
MIKA BRZEZINKSI: He had no problem with that question. I was fascinated by that question. I've wondered about him and the whole concept of working women and family. But stylistically, which is a part of the game, Willie, he has something that Mitt Romney doesn't. There is a connect. I mean, I don't agree with anything he says, but I like the guy.
SCARBOROUGH: Anything? That's awfully harsh.
BRZEZINKSI: That's not harsh: I don't.
WILLIE GEIST: Mark was on it before when he said he relates better, Rick Santorum does, in the state of Michign. It's that Chris Matthews question of politics: is this guy one of us? I think if you're a blue-collar worker, working-class, you look at Mitt Romney you say no, that guy is not one of us. But you do look at Rick Santorum, to some degree, and say, that guy's one of us.
BRZEZINKSI: Like I know him.
GEIST: Right, I know him.

I think a lot of folks have similar sentiments -- they disagree with him politically, but they think he is a decent human being who is sincere in his fidelity and his beliefs.
I used to run into this in the military. I might respect the person I've been working alongside, and know that we would do anything for each other in a crisis, and come to find that we were on opposite ends of the political spectrum. Some of those folks are my friends still because there are bonds that transcend politics.

Rick Santorum would lose to Barack Obama by 15 points at least. Math does not lie so look at this without any prejudice. If you look at polling numbers over 70% say they have heard of Santorum, but all they know is that he is conservative. He is a blank slate to the voters.
He won three States in one day and all he could raise in money was one million dollars total over the next 72 hours. Romney raised one and a half million in one afternoon.
If Santorum wins the nominating process the Democrats and the Unions will drop over $200 million in TV and radio advertising to define him as the most racist, sexist candidate that the GOP has ever put up for election. He will not have the money to define himself and counteract the charges. He will stand and give his nominating speech with the lowest favorables of any candidate ever.
Then the Democrats and the Unions will spend millions more after the nominating process saying B.O good and Rick bad. He will not have the money or the resources to overcome this. Those are facts hardcore facts and to ignore them looking for the Garden of Eden will get us four more years of B.O.
Romney, Gingrich, and Paul are known. The Democrats cannot define them they get to go toe to toe with B. O. Santorum cannot do this. He will get slaughtered.
What I find amazing is that the same people saying Santorum is the true conservative and McCain was the RINO have not looked at the voting numbers and realized that Santorum voted with McCain 92% of the time. How can one be a RINO and the other not?

Romney is cracking under the pressure. Right now, he looks like liberal role playing as a conservative, trying to get through using his father's name and the facade of a shrewd businessman and monogamous family man.
He's the guy who got called out for calling himself a "severe" conservative just a while ago. It clues you in to what his mentality must be like. It points to a guy who has liberal personal leanings trying to role play as a conservative in order to get the GOP nomination.
And what kind of math are you talking about? You Romney supporters are trying to fool people into buying into your guy. It's all a bunch of smoke and mirrors and sleight of hand meant to fool conservative voters into thinking Romney is the only "pragmatic choice." It's a bunch of BS. What sort of hard scientific or quantifiable elements is this assertion of Romney being electable based upon?
You guys are really, really making Romney unpalatable. All the bacon grease that is being slathered on him to help him get shoved down everyones throat is just further establishing him as un-kosher to conservatives at large.
Is that donkey meat?
- Don't worry about it. It tastes like bacon... yummy. Eat it!
I don't know... I don't think I'm supposed to eat donkey or bacon.
- Just shut up, everyone loves bacon... just swallow it.

I agree with just about everything Rick says, then that means I don't agree with just about anything she says. I do agree with her that Rick is a likeable guy though.
If Romney does not get the nomination, I will be very satisfied with Rick and unlike in 2008, I will not hold my nose when I vote for the Republican nominee in November.
( I will hold my nose if Gingrich or Paul gets the nomination, but chances of that happening are pretty close to nil.)
