MSNBC's Bashir Superimposes Republican Candidates In Front Of Confederate Flag

By Mark Finkelstein | January 21, 2012 | 18:10

Change font size:  A |  A

Given the abundance of options at the network, it's saying something to name Martin Bashir as the most noisome of MSNBC hosts.  But so he is, in my book.

Witness the low stunt Bashir pulled to open his show today, on the afternoon of the South Carolina primary.  Bashir superimposed photos of the Republican candidates in front of a Confederate flag image.  Lest their be any doubt as to the message Bashir meant to send, the screen graphic read "Rebel Yell."  Oh those racist Republicans.  Video after the jump.

Why not Photoshop the Republicans around a burning cross next time, Martin, and be done with it?

Note:  Bashir can't defend himself on the grounds that the Stars and Bars form part of the South Carolina state flag.  They don't.  See here.

Don't forget about Long

Submitted by killa37 on Sat, 01/21/2012 - 11:54pm.

Don't forget about Long Walk/Short Piers Morgan - who is another imported idiot. I'm sick of these foreign posers - who were hired for their 'diversity' and their accents - trying to tell us THEIR version of America.................this British camel-jockey probably couldn't tell you enough about the civil war to even warrent having a conversation with him. Plus, he'd have a hard time speaking with his stupid ugly head shoved up the south end of a north-bound camel.

Only a RACIST would not vote for an incompetent Black man

Submitted by MCLANTIERE on Sat, 01/21/2012 - 6:25pm.

Only a RACIST would not vote for an incompetent Black man -- is that their point.

Have they NO OTHER POINT on which to campaign? Since they want to get Obama re-elected ... on WHAT POINTS do they run -- aside from hurling names like RACISTS! This is coming -- BTW -- from the very people who voted for Obama BECAUSE he's (half) Black -- certainly, they must have known he didn't actually HAVE ANY QUALIFICATIONS to be president!

It's great

Submitted by GregE on Sat, 01/21/2012 - 6:37pm.

All this race nonsense is because there is nothing else. If there was a great Obamao record, wouldn't you think they'd be flying it on the highest flagpole possible? This is good stuff. Stupid, no doubt, and sad, but very telling.

We're told the candidate field is weak, that Romney is the best chance to win, that it's going to be a tough Presidential campaign for the nominee. Anyone looked at Obamao's record? All this media hype about how strong he is, could very well wind up being the biggest nonsense since their hyping of Carter, who was pummeled by Reagan. Any Republican candidate could very well wipe the floor with Obamao. I guarantee there are many people who will vote Republican when they get into the voting booth, that will not let that be known beforehand.

The nominee, in a debate with Obamao, needs to take some time to point something out to the "Independents" and that is that Republicans are going to vote Republican, Democrats are going to vote Democrat, but Independents are who the media has been lying to in order to sway them. Say that the media has purposefully taken the Independent voter for a fool, hyping Obamao and his record as something great, lying to Independents, hiding information from Independents, etc etc. Take that theme and speak to it in a way that calmly gets the message across, makes them think about the nonsense that the media has been doing and will continue to do for Obamao.

Political Correctness - the belief that one can pick up a turd by the clean end.

What a great complement!

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sat, 01/21/2012 - 6:35pm.

Being the descendant of several veterans of The Situation between the North and the South, I think that seeing conservatives in front of the battle flag of the Confederacy is a great complement.

Most of the people in the South are rather proud of the flag, and their heritage.

We're also proud of the fact that we know a lying, cheating, RBFSOB, stinking polecat when we see one, regardless of what shade of skin he's wearing. Last time I checked a skunk is black AND white, but it stinks all over.

PETA would be love it because it shows the evil Republicans in front of an image of the dismemberment of one of our cold-blooded friends. (Snakes are people, too.) Using the Gadsen flag would is tantamount to endorsing the killing of natural animals, so it makes sense to put the teabag conserving Republicans in front of a symbol of their depraved indifference to the industrial rape of the world. >Whew< I'm glad to get that rant off my chest!

Confederate flag

Submitted by gregz on Sun, 01/22/2012 - 2:10am.

The Confederate flag has been called the Confederate Battle Flag, the Rebel flag, Southern Cross or Dixie. It is a source of pride to Southerners and was carried into battle during other wars by troops from the South.

Like it or not the Confederate flag is a part of history. Opponents of the flag like the NAACP and Martin Bashir do not want it displayed because it might hurt someone’s feelings. They say that the flag is a symbol of racism because of slavery in the United States and the establishment of the Jim Crow laws in the Southern states.

Supporters of the Confederate flag like the Sons and Daughters of Confederate Soldiers view it as a battle flag and symbol of pride of their Southern heritage and freedom from the oppression of the Northern government.

Several politicians have called for banning the Confederate flag and that it should not be flown in this country. Some examples regarding banning the Confederate flag are: In 2003 Democrat Representative Dick Gephardt of Missouri stated, “The flag is a hurtful, divisive symbol and in my view has no place flying anywhere, in any state of this country.” Democrat Governor Bob Holden, at the urging of Gephardt had the Confederate battle flags removed from the Confederate Memorial Historic Site and the Fort Davidson historic Site, which are Confederate cemeteries. Democrat Mayor Francis Slay of St. Louis had the Southern flags with the confederate flag incorporated in them removed from the rotunda of City Hall. By taking such actions these politicians are not taking into account the feelings of people who support the flag because of their heritage and want to display it. Thus, they are discriminating against supporters of the flag by banning it.

The American flag, the Stars and Bars, still flies and has flown over the country during the time of slavery and the Jim Crow laws. Therefore, using the same logic, shouldn’t the American flag be removed and banned from flying at the various buildings and cemeteries in the United States? The answer, “Of course not.” The flag is a symbol that means something different to different people. People should not get offended so easily.

Grievance in perpetuity . . .

Submitted by pylgrym on Sun, 01/22/2012 - 9:45am.

As if the former states of the Confederacy had a monopoly on owning slaves or so-called "Jim Crow" legislation.

“One of the strangest things about the career of Jim Crow was that the system was born in the North and reached an advanced age before moving South in force.”
C. Vann Woodward, The Strange Career of Jim Crow

As the Northern colonies pioneered the slave trade in North America, a perceptive observer has noted that the North in 1860 should be referred to as the slave-trading States; and the South the slave-holding States. The following is drawn from www.slavenorth.com, a website worth visiting for more information on slavery north of Mason and Dixon’s line.
