Schultz's Surprising Respect For Santorum: 'Impressive'

By Mark Finkelstein | December 29, 2011 | 22:47

A  A

Is Ed Schultz's expression of respect for Rick Santorum a Machiavellian maneuver designed to sow chaos in the Republican field?  I actually don't think so.

Watching the MSNBC host in action this evening, I got the sense that Schultz, out on the Iowa campaign trail with Santorum, came away with a sincere respect for the former Pennsylvania senator, calling him "impressive" among other things.  Watch the video after the jump and be the judge.

Check out the video and see if the being back in his native Midwest might not have had a salubrious effect on Schultz.

ED SCHULTZ: The focus tonight on the Ed Show, starting out, is going to be on Rick Santorum. Now you know my political persuasion, but I bring this story tonight, completely objective from Iowa.  On the stump, Rick Santorum is impressive.  He is well-versed, schooled-up, and very strong in his conviction . . . and I'll tell you, there are few on the stump who do a better job of retail politics.

you notice how that repulsive jerk walked in the town meeting looking like a bully on the kindergarden play ground with his arms folded and shades. Give him 24 hours and his foul mouth will start in on his usual hate. He was trying to act decent because he was surrouned by Conservatives and Rick has a very quick mouth with his beliefs and could put the jerk in his place quite quickly

Body Language

Submitted by miss911ninja on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 8:27am.

I did notice that, grammajane. His body language spoke volumes!

I also wondered if the man who Mr. Repulsive selected to interview about his reaction to Santorum was chosen because Shultz expected to get a "bitter clinger" response from him. But Mr. Willson was also impressive! And I do realize that Ed's crew may have interviewed lots of bitter clingers, so I guess we'll never know exactly how or why they arrived at their final choice for broadcast.

marketing: knowing your customers

Submitted by MidAmerica on Thu, 12/29/2011 - 11:21pm.

Rick Santorum would make an excellent VP pick but looking at his situation from a purely marketing viewpoint his casualness and easy style does not match the severity that a lot of voters are experiencing this election.  The Hopey Dopey Change of obama's campaign last election would fall flat under these conditions.

No offense meant to any of Rick's supporters but if you look at the picture accompanying this article with Rick in the sweater smiling easily he looks like the white version of the medias image of obama.  Rick needs to be more structured and more professionally dressed to inspire confidence.  Confidence to lead us out of the economic wilderness we are in, that is number one for many voters.  That confidence and professional image are what's driving Mitt's campaign.

I think

former Senator Santorum dresses appropriately for the occasion... casual sweaters for town hall meetings, suit and tie for debates, etc.

"That confidence and professional image are what's driving Mitt's campaign."

or, perhaps, the leftist media is driving Mitt's campaign, because they want him to be the Republican nominee. Just like they (and the dimicrats) wanted McCain in the last election.

Impossible really

Submitted by Boudin on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 12:30am.

The media is manipulating our GOP race. They called us all racist, we put Cain in the lead, they tore him down. They highlighted Perry, then highlighted his inoculation bill and his debate performances, and tore him down, they talked about Newts good features, then bash us with his marital problems and his Pelousy sit down. Fact is, any of these folks, you or I, could beat Obama. Now I was for Cain, but have always liked Santorum as well, I am glad he is doing well, but they will come after him as well.

Fact is, the media ignored Newt, Bachmann, and Santorum from the git go. Now that conservatives are giving them a good look, the media is going to ratchet up their abuse.

Maybe

Submitted by grammajane on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 12:31am.

Rick is dressed casual to appear as one of the "boys" He might believe dressing in suits and ties looks to political and arrogant and choosing to dress down, somewhat, makes him feel/look more like the norm and more folks can idenify with him..........just a guess

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 12:48am.

Rick probabaly talked over special ed's head and left him in awe and confusion.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

I'll give Ed credit for not ambushing Santorum

Submitted by OffTheLows on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 4:21am.

though maybe he did and Rick handled it well enough they decided not to use it, but who knows. They may try to hype of the anti-Romney because the primaries will be boring, a foregone conclusion and a ratings dud if Romney wins Iowa and NH.

The sunglasses on the forehead thing was pretty odd.

News for you, Ed....

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 9:53am.

Rick Santorum has ALWAYS been "well-versed, schooled up, and strong in his convictions."

You and your media pals had just chosen to ignore him until now.

Nice of you to finally pay attention.  Now how long before you start trashing those convictions?

Looks like Ed "the blow hard" Schultz has been drinking again. I wonder if he was ordered to look more objective during the election?

His Lithium dosing adjustment must have worked.

Submitted by drsamherman on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 5:01pm.

His psychiatrist must have aimed for the acute episode dosing range and/or Ed must have switched to the higher proof whiskey.
