Barnicle Barely Blinks As Coulter Calls Ted Kennedy 'Human Pestilence'

By Mark Finkelstein | November 29, 2011 | 08:56

A  A

Can you imagine the holy hell Ann Coulter would have unleashed if Ronald Reagan had been described in similarly scathing terms? But when the irrepressible Ann called Ted Kennedy "human pestilence," long-term Kennedy clan retainer Mike Barnicle barely blinked.

It happened on Morning Joe today. Coulter, who has called on conservatives to rally around Mitt Romney, was defending Romney's adoption in the past of moderate positions.  Ann argued he did so in hyper-liberal Massachusetts while running against Ted Kennedy and  that Romney "came within five points of taking out that human pestilence."  The best Barnicle could muster was a stumbling "I, I, I, I don't know that I'm going to do that with Ted Kennedy,"  that "we miss him in Massachusetts" and that Kennedy would have facilitated the ObamaCare debate.  Video after the jump.

Watch Barnicle's lame defense of Kennedy and try to envision what Ann would have done to the former Boston Globe columnist had he dared besmirch the memory of The Gipper in similar terms.

ANN COULTER: I'm making the larger point of believing that conservatism is very popular: more popular than Republicanism is.  That's the concern with Romney.  But I think Romney is conservative now. What I don't understand some not understanding, though in the end as I say I think they will understand since I think it's going to be Romney, is what do they not understand about Massachusetts, the most liberal state in the Union, he ran against Teddy Kennedy. I mean, you're flipping from positions you held when you came within five points of taking out that human pestilence. Come on: give the guy a break.

MIKE BARNICLE: I, I, I, I don't know that I'm going to do that with Ted Kennedy.  I mean, he was, we miss him in Massachusetts. And I think the country, and especially in the Senate, and I think Barack Obama more than anybody. Because if Ted Kennedy had been alive, the health care debate would have lasted about five months.

COULTER: As a columnist, I miss him desperately.

What explains Barnicle's timid response to Ann's condemnation of Kennedy?  Intimidated to be sitting across the table from Coulter?

I have disagreed with other conservatives here more times than I can count. I don't insult and dig just because I disagree. You deliberately dig and insult to get a rise out of your fellow posters.

You did not speak of disabilities when your grammar was first  brought up. You spoke of typo's. And you further insulted Miss Coulter when I did not speak of her. A dig.

I never called you a liberal. Nor did I speak of Miss Coulter. You knew you were digging at other posters. It is why you continue to bring up Miss Coulter when I only spoke of your atrocious grammar.

Your frag your own. You are deliberately combative with other members of the right. And why? I don't know. But your attempt to lay it off as some issue of mine was pathetic.

It was amazing and of course not unexpected to see the "usual suspects" almost mute in challenging Ann on anything she said. I guess there is a big difference between firing on the defenseless and having an army of one sitting across the table from you.

I also laughed when Mika fired enough brain cells to try and trap Ann by asking who is the most conservative candidate (you know the response she was trying to get) but Ann didn't take the obvious bait.

I heard that too while I was in the car (on Sirius XM). What got me was they were LYING about what he had done before he passed away. There was no way that Ted Kennedy was reaching out to anyone about a week before he died. The man would have lost all power of speech and been drifting in and out of consciousness. I seriously doubt he even KNEW he was a senator in those last weeks. To say he reached out to fellow senators and congressmen was a bold face lie. And stopping by someones home after chemo? Not likely.

Worse than Sharpton's "resist we much" line. They find the courage to respond only after the guest leaves. Then they giggle and snort and roll their eyes. Cowards, all of them.

I wanted Romney over McCain and got McCain, and eventually voted for McCain in the general election. I want Bachmann or Cain over Gingrich or Romney, so we'll see which of the latter I get to vote for from the way it's looking.

So according to your logic if these purists do not get who they want specifically, they should not vote for them at all. Because guess what? That's what happened in 2008/2009 and look what we got. A complete cluster... mess.

Teddy's senate seat will be Mitt's running mate? Now that will be a liberal marriage made in hell, Ms. Coulter.

To make Mitt palatable Coulter is comparing Mitt with Teddy? Palatable to whom,Ms Coulter? Surely not Reagan conservatives!

There is a transcript and a recording of the Mitt versus Teddy debate floating around the net. In this vintage liberal fest we hear Mitt tell the audience that he is the abortionists' best ally; he is the chumpion that will fight for homosexual rights. He lays out the typical welfare big government programs as if he would do a better job at defending the liberals' sacred cows of welfarism and big gobblement better than anyone on the planet.

Listening to that "debate" I had to wonder why Mitt ran against Teddy since both agreed pretty much on all the Liberal issues.
